Convert from MPEG-1-film to iMovie

I have some video sequences from a Kiwi friend sent to me back in 1993 on a cd. They run easily on my pc (Compaq), but I would like to include them with a newer footage.
However I cant open the files and iMovie 8 keeps telling me that the files are not a movie file?
When I look at the file it says
Name: 1993 Denmark4f.mpg
File type: MPEG-1-film
Size: 233 MB
What shall I do to get access to the film on my iMac4,1 with an intel core duo processor

oh...and Jon, the mac recgonizes my files as mpeg-1...in the preview screen there is NO thumbnail and next to "kind" it says MPEG-1 Movie. ???
QT applications tend to be somewhat non-specific with muxed compression formats. If you check using different "Info" windows you may find the file described as "Muxed MPEG Stream", "Muxed MPEG-2", "MPEG-1", etc. Remember, QT is not based on "muxed" synchronization technology and identifications may well depend on trapping programmed into the given application you are using at any given time. Best source for info would be the MPEG Streamclip "Show Stream Info" window. It will correctly identify the audio and video compression formats, their data rates, audio sampling rate, recognized aspect ratio for the video, etc.
I had some teenagers at my house last week and let them play around on my "super-cool" imac...I thought maybe one of them had accidentally changed a setting???
Probably not a factor. Recognition process is automatic for the most part. Some have said that mixing HD with SD content creates problems. (Believe the fix was to download all SD content and then delete it before downloading the HD.) Others say the setup order is all important to prevent getting stuck in one "mode" or the other. I also prefer capturing manually which seems to work 100% of the time for me as long as I first play back as sample of the camcorder file first to "reset" the current capture mode. (E.g., HDV shows a "blue screen" until I am actually playing HDV content and press the import button.) Suspect you either discovered and later forgot the "proper" work flow for your camera or, as some have said, the v7.1 update modified the routine so it doesn't work as well as it first did. Suspect only time will tell for sure. Remember, this is all newly charted ground as far as Apple is concerned and frankly, I think their still trying to "iron out the bugs."

  • No Audio Playback in Music Videos that were converted from MPEG to MPEG-4

    Friends -
I am using iTunes as the default player for all types of audio files. I have not downloaded any supplemental video or audio Codec files (yet). Windows Media Player (11.0.6001.7000) is my default player for videos. When I recently converted a batch of old music videos from MPEG format to MPEG-4 format, I lost the audio playback on the converted files when trying to play back using iTunes. Audio works fine on the original MPEG files from iTunes. After syncing my Video iPod, the video playback is fine on the MPEG-4 files, but there is still no audio. Any suggestions?

Try using MPEG Streamclip to convert the videos; more information on this issue is available in this article.

  • Important wmv / files converted from wmv to avi into imovie - PROBLEM!

    Hi there,
I feel like I'm going insane with this.
I had the same problem on '08 as I do on '09.
I make youtube videos and I am trying to open some clips that were edited on a PC by other youtube users (who have emailed them to me for a group project). They won't open in imovie. If I convert the file to .avi or .m4v or even .mp4 using Handbrake, they still won't import into imovie.
I don't know what to do and there aren't that many threads about this online.
The closest I've got is this information I found on one thread:
iMovie '08 will only allow you to to import files containing compression formats that can be edited. If your AVI file won't import, it likely means that the audio and/or video data is not editable. To import it, you will have to first convert it to any of the acceptable compression formats. For video this means DV, AIC, M-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, MPEG-4, or H.264.
    Can anyone help me?
I've wasted such a lot of time on this.
I have Flip4Mac (free) and I can't export a wmv file on it unless I buy Quicktime Pro but I'm loathe to buy it on the offchance by converted file still won't open in imovie
I hope to hear from someone soon.
    Many thanks,
    Emily

Hi Em and welcome to the forums!
On this one issue I may be able to help:
I have Flip4Mac (free) and I can't export a wmv file on it unless I buy Quicktime Pro
Nope, QT Pro does not export to wmv, but the PAID FOR version of Flip4Mac does that conversion!

  • MPEGs with sound in iMovie

Well I have a digital camera that records movies with sound, but when I try to import them into iMovie they end up with no sound. The help manual says that MPEGs wont work with sound in iMovie. So I was wondering, is there anyway to convert my MPEG movies into somthing iMovie compatible for sound like a .mov or DV. I've tried many products but they all seem to convert the video and leave the sound out just like iMovie does? Please help me.

  • How can I edit material from 1 or more dvds that I created from my own filmed material in iMovie but which I no longer have in iMovie

How can I edit material from 1 or more dvds that I created from my own filmed material in iMovie but which I no longer have in iMovie

You need to 'reverse engineer' them :
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

Avi format is not compatible with Imovie 7 !
Somebody can give me the format I have to use to be able to read the film in Imovie WITHOUT pixelisation ! Because I tried with quicktime pro to save the film under several format , but imported images (mpeg4 or m4v...) are of very poor quality .
    Hoping to get help.
    Tks in advance

I'm not able anymore to change the data rate !
This depends on the application and preset being used. If you use the "Movie to TV" conversion, then the video data rate is set "contextually," dependent on the frame size. If you use the "Movie to QuickTime Movie" option and select the H.264 codec, then you can manually limit the video data rate or allow it to use as high a video data rate as it thinks it needs. (E.g., for a average DV/AIFF file of 28.5 Mbps, it usually needs a video data rate in the 18.0-20.0 Mbps rage to retain most of the visual quality. You are probably somewhere in the range of 2.5-3.5 Mbps.)
Is 640x380 not enough to obtain a good quality ?
That depends on you definition of "good quality." There are some on these forums who consider anything less than 720p (1280x720) to be unacceptable quality. (Of course they are starting with 1080i or 1080p (1920x1080) video and are viewing their content on a "top-of-the-line" 1080p rated plasma monitors and generally regard anyone watching SD TV with a touch of disdain.) In any case, my library covers 7 decades of theatrical serials, TV, and theatrical movies, so my standards might be considered somewhat "liberal" when it comes to quality.
Why Imovie 7 doesn't accept AVI and Imovie 6 well ? Can we import imovie 6 film into imovie 7 ? Without loosing quality ?
It does. Unfortunately, you seem to think that AVI is a codec -- but it isn't. It is a file container. I have a cousin with a Casio camera that stores it 320x240 clips as M-JPEG video with Unsigned Integer compressed audio. These files import directly into iMovie '08 in their original AVI file container. Thus, it is how the audio and video data is compressed that determines if a file cam be imported or not.
In the case of iMovie HD, a file need only be "conversion" compatible to be imported. If you open your iMovie HD project package, you will find that your AVI files were converted to an editing format as they were imported to the application. iMovie '08 does not automatically convert movies as the are imported by the Finder since it assumes you will only attempt to import files in the compression format in which you want them to be edited. Thus, iMovie '08 will only import files which are "edit" compatible at the QT frame level. As to not losing quality, remember that when iMovie HD import/converts your file from AVI to DV, it is also increasing the date rate on the order of 500% to 800% with similar increases in your file size. In the case of your AVI to H.264/AAC TV conversion, you are likely either dropping the data rate by as much as 40-50% or else keeping it at roughly the same level at best.
Do you know if it is possible to extract audio from image in imvie 7 ?
Not sure what you mean by "image" here. If a clip shows up in the "Event" window in iMovie '08, then you can extract the audio using the "Command-Shift" key combination to drag just the audio from the clip in the "Event" window (whether an iMovie Event or an iPhoto Event) and pin it to a clip in the "Project" window. Note that you cannot use the extracted audio as "background" audio here. (Alternatively, you can "extract" an audio track using QT Pro and store it in iTunes for access in iMovie '07 as you can any other audio file in iTunes.)

  • IPod Classic 160GB film library sync problem -  trying to sync films that have converted from purchased DVD to mp4 format locally, not purchases from the online store - all other libraries sync perfect - why?

Hello Apple and the iTunes Windows PC users community.
I am trying to sync films that I have converted from purchased DVD to mp4 format locally, not purchases from the online store. The mp4s all appear and play successfully in my iTunes application but will not sync across to the iPod film library folder.
For your information: I am using iTunes 11.1.3.8 on a Windows 7 64bit machine with 500GB hard disk and 8GB of Ram in the UK.
I have restored the iPod classic 160GB three times now to see if it was a hardware problem with no joy. Each time all the music restores properly as do the podcasts and all the items in TV programmes all appear to sync and work fine.
I have also tried to copy films into the TV Programmes to get around it with no joy. They always go to the films section to start with. It is just the Films library that does not sync - all others work perfectly. As a last resort I have uninstalled and re-installed iTunes with no joy either.
I am technically savvy and have gone through the itunes and ipod settings but nothing appears to make a difference - This is the first time I have had to post here as I can usually solve the majority of the ipod anomilies but this one has me flummoxed.
Has the film encoding type changed in the newest itunes update? - Has this happened to anybody else and is it a hardware, software, or operating system problem.

Having uninstalled the current version 11.1.3.8 and loaded and older version of iTunes 10.7.0.21 I can now categorically confirm that the newest update seems to be causing the problem as the films and TV Programmes are syncing perfectly on this older version.
If you are going to do this please dont forget to remove the  ' iTunes Library.itl' file as this stops the older versions from running as I've just found out

  • Rendering while converting from DVD using MPEG Streamclip or Cinematize

Is there anyway to make rendered .mov file, while converting from DVD to .mov, using MPEG Streamclip or Cinematize for final cut pro?
    Thanks.

Are you asking if there's a way to export from mpegstreamclip so you don't need to render when you edit with the file in fcp?  If so, yes...  (sorry couldn't resist).
What format is your sequence in fcp (make the timeline active and hit command(apple)-zero?   Note the pixel dimensions, frame rate and compressor settings and set the quicktime options in mpegstreamclip export dialog to match them.  You should be good to go.
Also, you might do some searching here.  Pretty sure someone posted a link to a tutorial on how to do this,

When I showed it on my TV I had shimmering on certain edges. Has anyone had this happen and if so how did you eleminate it?

    Hi
    A. Do not Use - Share to iDVD - in any iMovie version at all !
    B. Start a BRAND NEW iDVD project
    C. in iMovie'08 to 11 -  Share to Media Browser and as LARGE - NOT HD or other resolution as quality will be even worse
    - in iMovie HD6 - just close it and from within iDVD import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it)
    - FinalCut - Export as QuickTime Movie - NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION - AT ALL !
    D. When in iDVD - see to that in the Lay-out menu (when it looks like a box-plott) there ARE NOTHING in the upper left most box (Auto Start box). As this overruns any Menu.
    E. Save as a DiskImage - TEST this first - befor burning any DVDs

  • 8mm film to IMovie

Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can get from 8mm film to IMovie?
I had 400 feet of 8mm transferred to DVD But IMovie won’t accept it. Says QuickTime can’t parse it.
Called Apple and asked if QuickTimePro might do the job. The answer was yes and 100 bucks later I had Toast 8 Titanium. Rather than send it back( I thought I’d ordered QuickTime Pro) I called Roxio and asked if Toast would convert the DVD to something IMovie could use. Again, the answer was yes.
When I used Toast it gave me a message that it couldn’t do the job because the DVD “might be copy protected”. A call to the DVD provider indicated that the DVD was copy protected ... even tho’ it is my film on the DVD.
Someone said to try MacTheRipper. I did and it did rip the movie from the DVD but it was still “copy protected”. Running that through Toast didn’t help.
On online site suggests (buying) a digital movie camera and recording my movies from the projected movies, then transferring that to my MAC. I’ll probably do that if I can’t find something simpler.
I still have over 7,000 feet of 8 and super 8 film to work with so, if anyone has a suggestion I’d very much appreciate it?
For info, I’m very much an amateur.

    A fascinating project!
My older brother had 4 hours of (silent) 8mm cine film dating back to 1958-1980 (when he finally bought a video camera!). He wanted me to convert them to carefully edited DVDs, with music, sound effects, titles and so on. Like a madman I accepted the challenge! To make life easier he lives in Belgium and uses a PC!
The process, to cut this short, was as follows:
At considerable expense he had all the film transferred to four DVDs in some PC-only friendly mpeg codec, and sent them to me.
I used Streamclip and the Apple mpeg thingy (saving time by not loking it up) to convert these to Quicktime DV files. To make life even easier, the Belgian moron who did the conversion to DVDs had not done so in chronologal order!
That made for a very large QT file, which I imported into iMovie, and set about carving it into date order, re-exporting the various years to QT as individual files, and then importing into iMovie projects to edit.
Only a couple of months later I had it organised into three projects, each of an hour or so, beautifully edited with titles, transitions, music, sound effects and other bells and whistles, and burnt them to 3 DVDs. I was generally agreed that I deserved an Oscar for technical merit!
That was just to let you know that it can be done!
Your only real hurdle is the copy protection. Can you get a fresh set that is NOT copy protected?
But before you even start I heartily recommend that you update your OS and all software to the latest versions, particularly Quicktime, and make that Pro.
