Convert Gmail POP to IMAP in Mac Mail

Hi--
I have been living in the dark ages using Mac "Mail" to get my gmail email as a Pop account. I've set it so that the messages are left on gmail's server as well as being downloaded to my Mac. But now I'd really like to switch over to using gmail and Mail through an IMAP account. I've read lots of potential scenarios as to how to do this, but most people have NOT left their message on gmail's server.
I know I can set up another IMAP account in mail and disable my current POP account. But many people have then said to drag my "On My Mac" folders/mailboxes that I've created over the years to the new IMAP mailbox....my concern is that because gmail's server has all the messages, I will actually be duplicating ALL my mail on both the server and my mac.
So....is there any way to switch my gmail over to IMAP and preserve or recreate my "On My Mac" folder/mailbox system given that all the messages are still on the gmail server.
Thanks for any and all help
dp

I found this great set of mail AppleScripts:
http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/Mail_Scripts.html
It includes one script to delete duplicate messages. So if we can't find a way to do this right, then I'll just download all the duplicates then delete them. Of course I don't want to actually do that, lets call this the nuclear option.
So can anyone think of a way to make an IMAP account for my gmail without it downloading all the messages again that I have already downloaded?

  • How can I convert an outlook pst file to mac mail without using a windows based computer

I recently bought the new iMac as my older Windows based computer crashed with a bad motherboard.  I have been trying to find a way to convert Outlook 2007 pst files to Mac Mail without the need to use a Windows based computer since all I have now is a Mac.  I have the copies of the pst files on my Mac, so I am looking for the most efficient way to convert them to the format that I can then open them in the Mac Mail.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi - thanks for the instructions but where do you get the option for Quicktime. If I do File - Export I only get the options for File name, place and size but no option that allows to select quicktime:-(

  • How do I stop sent email from Gmail from appearing in my Mac Mail?

I use my Mac Mail to send my personal emails... However I also use it to monitor my work email. However, when I use my work Gmail account to send multiple messages either on my phone or on my computer through Gmail, whenever I go into mac Mail I have 40+ copies of the emails I sent. I tried to look in the setting if there's something that disables this... Can anyone help? It's so annoying. I send more than 40 emails a day... I don't wanna have to sort through what I sent and what I received in my email. Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Have you clicked the arrowhead to the left of the Inbox?
It reveals each account you've set up with Mail.
Just click on the individual account you want to view, and only those messages will be displayed.
To return to viewing all received messages, click back on Inbox at the top.
Same for Drafts, Sent, Trash, and Junk.

  • Converting from POP to IMAP on Mail

I have had an ISP email account for a long time with Charter and have used it as a POP account with Apple Mail. It's worked fine for me. I've developed the habit of saving lots of old email in Mail in the Mailboxes (some kept in my Inbox and Sent box) and most catalogged into folders I've created in the On my Mac area.
I've recently gotten an iPhone and the Charter email setup on it results in an IMAP account. I've run into the "locked" inbox problem when I've recently accessed my mail with my iPhone and then try to access my mail on my iMac using Mail. I understand that it is probably better not to mix protocols and that I should use all POP or all IMAP. I've recently found out that Charter offers the IMAP protocol for desktop email access. They probably have for a long time but I just had no reason to look into it.
Anyway, I've pretty much decided to save my current Inbox and Sent box into On My Mac folders, then delete my Charter POP accont in Mail and create a new Charter IMAP account in Mail and then continue to use my Charter IMAP account on my iPhone. Does this sound reasonable?
I have a question about saving email from the IMAP account on my iMac as I have been doing with my POP acount. I know that the IMAP email will remain on the Charter server (up to some storage limit) but I want to continue to save and categorize at least some of my most important email in folders in Mail. Does the On My Mac concept still apply when using an IMAP account as opposed to a POP account? Will Mail basically look the same? What if anything about the way Mail looks to me will be different when using the IMAP protocol?
I suppose my use of web based Yahoo mail has exposed me to many of the differences between POP and IMAP. I believe that my Yahoo account is most similar to IMAP--correct?
I'm learning a lot more than I knew before about this email protocol business. I think I "almost" have it figured out.
    Thanks,
    Steve M.

Thanks Jeffrey. I thought I had about decided to convert desktop and iPhone to IMAP for Charter account but now I'm not too sure. OK, this is kind of a family "community" email account right now my wife is accessing it from a Macbook Pro and I'm accessing it from an iMac and we're both using Apple Mail with the account setup as a POP. We have Mail set to leave messages on the server for something like a week or maybe the next longest setting. I just want to be able to have a look at the email messages on my iPhone and maybe reply to one occasionally. I'm thinking now that trying to setup the account as POP on the iPhone may be the way to go. We alway end up saving and filing away lots of email messages on the iMac and the laptop. I know with Yahoo and Gmail there is a practically unlimited amount of online storage but with Charter I think there is a 1 GB cap. I am beginning to fear that with IMAP we may run up against that cap.
    Thanks,
    Steve M.

  • Migrating gmail account from POP to IMAP in Apple Mail - avoid duplicates?

I have a massive gmail account full of three years or more of messages. On OS X Mail I have a POP account that I have been using since the beginning, and I have always left a copy of messages on the gmail server, so it has three years worth on there.
So my question is, I want to disable the POP account and add an IMAP account for gmail, but how can I do this without the IMAP downloading allllll of my messages over again? Because I literally do not want to have TWO copies of each message from the past three years... oh heck no.
There has to be a solution to this. I don't know if the new version of Mail is smart enough to see that a copy of a message already exists, and not download it again -- somehow I doubt it's that smart. Is there a way on gmail to mark all of the mail that's on the server currently as being "not-for-download"?
I'm being forced into this because for whatever reason, one of my two Macs decided it's not going to download POP messages that the other one has already downloaded, even though the messages are still on the server!!

  • All my gmail folders are missing from MAC mail.

I have found all the info. on my gmail account but I can not deem to import them back into MAC Mail. (I use MAC OSX 10.9.1)
    I need help.
I have done all I have read about online:
    1. All mail, checked to 'show'
    2. IMAP enabled
    3. POP mail disabled
Still all my folders are on my gmail account listed under labels...and in the left hand side  in the folders area.
All I did to have this happen, is to have a password update, cause my gmail would not sync for some reason, and BOOM. Gone!

  • Gmail not sending messages in Mac Mail

I have recently switched to Gmail from Hotmail. I have linked my Mac Mail to my new account and I'm able to receive messages fine. However, when I try to send a message, it just sits in the Outbox. I also get the spinning wheel next to the Sent folder. Please help!

  • Since moving from POP to Imap, my send mail are shown twice

    HI,
I have an hotmail account which I changed from Pop to Imap. Receiving, deleting and archiving mail work fine. But the send box in TB shows my mails twice. However mails which I send from outlook on line are shown only once.
Is it so that by having twice my send mails is taking twice the size? How can I make it back to normal?
Note that the addressees receive my mails normally , e.g. once . I have checked the account settings but did not find anything strange.
    In going server : imap-mail.outlook.com
    Out going server : smtp-mail.outlook.com
Thanks in advance for your support.

Hotmail/live/outlook.com accounts automatically copy a sent message to the Sent folder, so to avoid duplicates, uncheck "Place a copy in" under Tools/Account Settings/<i>hotmailaccount</i>/Copies & Folders.

  • How to convert from pop to imap and not lose messages downloaded or stored on my computer?

I have several inboxes but only need to convert the mail inbox et al for cox

Creat a new Mailbox... On My Mac, move the existing eMails to that box first.
Then you may need to delete the POP account before setting up the IMAP account.

  • Help!  Migrated from POP to IMAP - Lost Sent Mail!

    Hello all,
OK, I messed up. It happens to us all, once in a blue moon (even if I knew better to back up BEFORE I tried something new, and it had been 3 months).
I've been using the Mail App with my Gmail accessed through POP Mail since 2005.
Today, I wanted to make a switch from the Mail app checking my Gmail account with POP to checking it with IMAP. It's the same Gmail account that I previously retrieved with POP, but now wanted to access through IMAP (better syncing ability through multiple machines).
I created a new IMAP account in the Mail Preferences.
I had meant to disable the POP account, but instead...I DELETED THE POP GMAIL ACCOUNT! This stupid accidental mistake has me kicking myself!
As a result, all of my sent mails are gone. My Inbox is synced up like it was before, but NOT my Sent Mail.
The last time I backed up was 3 months ago - so I could retrieve 5 years (minus last 3 months) worth of sent emails.
I've checked my Library / Mail Settings, and the Pop Gmail account is no longer there. That file, that has all my sent mail data, is not in the Trash - it's nowhere to be found.
I can find the file that has all my sent mail on a backup drive. (A .mbox file found in Library / Mail.) Since I have not backed up recently, I'm losing 3 months worth of sent emails.
Any help in retrieving it would be appreciated.
    thanks,
    Mike

    Mike,
Gmail, which is not true POP, captures a copy for the Sent on the server if you use their SMTP -- smtp.gmail.com. To see those messages captured that way requires web mail access and will not be seen by any other email client accessing as POP. I know this to be true, for I tested it when I once used POP with Gmail.
In general your comment is true for POP, as I well know.

  • Switched from POP to IMAP, problems in Mail

I use a gmail account, and had it set up with POP
I recently changed it to IMAP settings, however before i did this, i had rules set which would move my messages to specific folders, for example, messages from facebook would go into one folder etc
No on this new set up, firstly, my inbox doesn't display ALL my messages, i have to go to ALL mail and secondly, the rules are not working, there is nothing in my specific mailboxes
    anyone know the answer?

that's how IMAP works. it syncs with the server and you local content reflects what is stored on the server. so, of course, Mail downloads all the mails you have on the server when you first connect (100 messages are actually very very few). but after a first "sync" (if you want to call it that), it just downloads the new messages from the server, like POP does.
that gmail entry in mail is totally normal, it reflects the server while the "mailboxes" part reflects your local copy. I personally just have the gmail part closed all the time so it's not really a bother. you can't get rid of it though, but that's just logical.
why your gmail shows 68 new messages is strange though. did you delete the messages from the gmail trash either? try opening the gmail part in mail, right-click on "\[Google Mail]" and select "sync gmail". if that doesn't work, open the "\[Google Mail]" folder as well see which folder has the new messages, go into that folder, press cmd+A to select all messages and then right-click on the selected messages and select mark -> as read.
also, to work properly, you should go into your \[Google Mail] folder, select your drafts folder and then click on "Mailbox -> Use this mailbox for -> drafts". do this for sent, trash and junk either.
as for the RSS feed: when adding the feed, make sure you don't have "show in inbox" selected, otherwise all RSS news will appear in the inbox of mail. that has nothing to do with IMAP though.

  • Gmail POP not working with Apple mail

    Hi
I normally have no problem downloading emails from gmail onto mail.
Unfortunately from yesterday onwards the emails stopped downloading. This occurred suddenly, and I'm not sure why. This has happened once before, and I managed to fix it, but I'm not sure how i did it. Has anyone experience the same, or does anyone have a solution?
    Cheers
    Bishan

I've seen this problems posted all over the show with no replies, but in one forum the answer was given. Simply go to settings in Gmail, and switch off "enable POP" and save. Then switch it on again. And you can now receive emails.
    Thanks
    Bishan
(ie in the end i answered my own problem - but i hope it helps someone else)

  • How do I setup hotmail to utilize IMAP in Mac Mail OSX 10.6?

How do I setup my OSX 10.6.7 Mail program to run Hotmail through IMAP without the installation of seperate programs?
I know the software has the capabilities but I cannot figure out how to add the account in manually without it doing it automatically without the option to add it manually.
    Please help.
*Please do not recommend installing other apps, as I am not interested in that.*
    Thank you.

I don't know how to configure hotmail, you'll have to ask them.
I also don't know if this will work with a hotmail account, but you can stop the automatic account creation by holding down the option key when you click the Continue button in the Mail account setup.  From there, you can manually create an IMAP account using the hotmail servers.

  • Help with imap gmail account via mac mail

What are the best settings for gmail as imap in mac mail?
I have my gmail account set up with mac Mail as an IMAP account.
I notice that in the last few weeks?? not sure how long, my mac mail is taking forever to load.  I opened the activity window and it seems like there are so many things happening.  I did find an old account that was still had some activity and while I had delteed it, I did need to do a few more steps to get it out of the process.
Now, as it still seems to take forever for my inbox to fully load, I began looking into the settings.
I am not able to change the settings for trash and I think saving the deleted messages to the server could be a waste of time.  This is the advanced setttings page
the trash is 'grayed out' and won't allow me to uncheck the 'store deleted messages on the server'.  Anyone know how to change this?
Also, I want to uncheck 'store sent messages on the server' as I think that will save a LOT of process activity, but gmail's directions for imap accounts says to leave it checked.  Not sure why, any thoughts?

I'm not familiar with CalbeOne, but you can follow the instructions they provided at their site:
    http://help.cableone.net/HSD/mycableone/migrate/default.aspx
You might also want to make sure you followed their transfer instructions.
Build your accounts in Mail as per the POP or IMAP settings provided. When adding accounts to Mail, when you get to the first screen, you can hold the option key down when you hit continue for more options on the Mail configurations rather than the standard defaults.
If you are viewing these accounts at the gmail website, then you might need to do some configuration there also. I'm not sure on how much they are integrated with gmail.
