Convert internal HD from iMac g5 to external HD for Powermac G5?

I have an iMac G5 (PPC) that apparently has a failed motherboard. I don't want to fix it. Instead I want to remove the HD and convert it to an external HD that I can access on a Powermac G5 (PPC) via usb, firewire, or other cable that fits the Powermac. The Western Digital drive says on it: model WD1600JD, WD Caviar SE, Serial ATA Hard Drive. There is a note at the bottom of the label: "Use either SATA Power or Legacy Power connector. Do not use both which may result in damage to the hard drive". Does anyone have actual hands on experience with this so they can tell me exactly what adapter they used? I see various types of adapters online, e.g. caddy, enclosure, cable without enclosure and with various types of connectors. The HD has both circuit board connections made to fit into a slotted jack and pins. I am unsure what I need to use that is safe and will not damage anything. WD does not give specific advice on this. Thanks.

Here's a couple of ways...

Use the FW/800 cable to your Mac.

can I use my 24 inch' 2007 imac as an external monitor for my PC

No, sorry, you can't. Pre-Thunderbolt iMacs could to this, but with Thunderbolt-equpped iMacs they can only be used as a screen for other Thunderbolt-equipped computers. No company has yet to come up with a converter that works with Thunderbolt Macs. The only way you could get video from a game console into your Mac would be via a video capture device and the inherent lag in such capture would, I think, make most if not all games unplayable.

  • Using a 27-inch iMac as an external display for my macbook air

I would like Using a 27-inch iMac as an external display for my mac book air.
i bought a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable, it's the Belkin Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable on apple store.
I connect my imac and mac book air with this cable but the screen of my mac book air don't appear on imac screen.
    where is my error ?

Morning seal, my experience suggests the latter of your two posts is the correct one. I have a 27" iMac with a mini display port (a 2-year old one, not the newer one with thunderbolt); and a brand new Mac book air with thunderbolt. I connected the two with a Belkin male-male mini display port to mini display port cable, and it works fine - press command f2, and the iMac acts as display for the MBA.
The irony here is that the folks at the apple store in Paris assured me that this would NOT work, and that I needed to buy a €999 thunderbolt display to connect to my MBA. I thought I'd try anyway, since I had the cable to connect a MacBook pro to the iMac anyway... Glad I did.
Bottom line: yes, despite all the confusion, the new MacBook air will connect to the minidisplay port of an older iMac 27"; and the cable it needs to do that is the older minidisplay port cable, not the thunderbolt one.

  • How can I convert .cp projects from Captivate 2 to .cptx projects for Captivate 7?

How can I convert .cp projects from Captivate 2 to .cptx projects for Captivate 7? Do I have to use some other version between 2 and 7 to do this?

I doubt you are going to be able to find all those previous versions and the time it would take to install, open the project, verify it, and everything in between (and without license keys, they would only be saved from trial versions which would be an issue), it seems it would be better just to start with Cp7 and put the effort into that.
Completely off topic, one of the things I like about Authorware is that Macromedia provided previous versions that would allow you to open up and save the projects to get to version 7. It was a nice little touch they provided for developers. I don't believe that Adobe does this for Captivate though.

  • How do I use my 2011 27" iMac as an external display for a pc?

I just bought a 27" imac for my home, and was also planning on using it as an external display for my work Dell Laptop running Windows 7.
The Dell laptop has a displayport output, so I was planning on getting a displayport <-> minidisplayport cable, and using the iMac in target display mode.
I would simply plug the minidisplay end of the cable into one of the iMac's 2 Thunderbolt ports. Seemed fairly simple.
Except now it seems from what I have been reading that 2011 iMacs DO NOT WORK in target display mode unless they are connected to another Thunderbolt source. This leads to me two questions.
    1. Can anyone confirm or deny this? If this is true, does that mean I cannot plug my Dell's displayport into the iMac's Thunderbolt port as I described above?
    2. If #1 is true, is there any other option? Are there any adapters that I can use to turn my Dell into a Thunderbolt source for display purposes?
If I can't resolve this I will have to return the iMac
    Thanks very much.
    David

    David,
Sorry you can't use the 2011 iMac as an external display to your PC. The feature you are referring to is called Target Display Mode and works on 2009 & 2010 27" iMacs. The 2011 machines use Thunderbolt as you know however they do support external displays that are not Thunderbolt displays. So for example if you wanted 2 displays on the iMac you can easily do that with either Mini Display port to DVI or MDP to VGA or even HDMI. MDP is the same size as Thunderbolt and this will work fine to drive a display, TV or even a projector.
I'd recommend reading Apple's explanations at Target Display Mode 2009 & 2010 iMacs & Target Display Mode Mid 2011 iMacs.
Using a Mac as an external display for a Windows machine to me seems like a horrible waste of a Mac. Why not enjoy the iMac and if anything run Windows on it and get rid of the PC?

  • Can i use my 21.5" imac as an external monitor for my macbook pro?

I have a 21.5" iMac (with Intel processor) that I'm trying to use an external monitor for a new Macbook Pro.  Both machines have a thunderbolt input.  I bought a Belkin mini displayport to mini displayport connector, but my macbook is not displaying on the iMac.  I saw videos online showing this done with the 27" iMac, saying you just needed to press Command+F2, but that is not working for me.  I can't seem to find any posts confiming if I can use my 21.5" iMac this way though.

  • Is it possible to use an iMac as an external monitor for a MacBook?

What is the process (if any) to turn off the iMac's system and make it essentially an external monitor for the MacBook?

No, it's not possible. Your iMac simply does not have a "video in" port for the MacBook's "video out" port. While Mike N. (nahyunil)'s option may give the illusion that you have two monitors, it does NOT turn off the system on the iMac. The iMac must be on and fully functional for that option to work.

  • IMac (2010) as external screen for Macbook Pro (2012)

I've been googling this for a few hours now and have only walked into walls.
My 21,5" iMac only has a FireWire, Mini DisplayPort and several USB ports and has the newest up to date software but is from mid 2010.
My 13" Macbook Pro only has a FireWire, Thunderbolt and several USB ports and has the newest up to date software but is from mid 2012.
It would be very interesting and useful for me to be able to use my iMac as an extra screen for my Macbook Pro, as all I do is video editing, photo editing, video grading etc.
All help or suggestions is welcome! Thank you!

In addition to Niel's post, this article might help you out. What you're looking to do is called "Target Display Mode." I would make sure to especially check the "requirements" section to make sure that your model will work for this.

  • Burn from Imac direct to external burner

How can I burn directly from my Imac CD player disc insert to my external CD burner? I can do it on my PC with no problem using Record Now program. Is there a program I can use to accomplish this? Or am I only limited to creating an image in the Imac, then burning to an extenal burner? It takes too long. On my PC I can insert a recorded disc in one slot.....put in a blank CD into the other slot........and burn disc to disc direct. Help!!!

Thanx.........I downloaded Burn, but couldn't figure out how to use it in the burner to external burner application. Plus there was no "help" button or online manual. Maybe I'm wrong, but I can see how to use it AFTER you create an image file. I don't want to have to take all of the time to create a file, then burn from that file. I have a recording studio and sometimes I need to make a quick copy from a disc. On PC you just put in one disc....then one into the burner and the copy disc to disc. I am new to Mac and find it far superior to my PC. I record through Logic Pro 9, Reason and Ableton so I am not a newby. I have a stand alone external burner USB'd to my new 27" quad core Imac. Are there any free programs I can download or is there a setting internally to OS X 10.6.2 that I need to change to get this simple job done?

  • Moving files from iMac to an external drive

I have a 250 gb iMac and a 1 tB external drive (Seagate). My iMac is getting quite full, so I tried moving some files to my external. It told me that I couldn't because these files needed OS X to operate. How can I move files to my external so I can clear up my iMac drive?

    Greetings,
Is the drive you are moving files to the drive you use for your Time Machine backup? If so, don't do this. Any files you put on that drive are not backed up by Time Machine (Time Machine cannot backup it's own drive. That would be like performing brain surgery on yourself.) If you are running out of space, get an additional external drive to store them on so that they can still be backed up by Time Machine.
Here are some general ideas on how to free up space: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8358.html
The most common items that people tend to have that use up all their space are iTunes (Music/Movies), iPhoto (Pictures), and iMovie (Movies).
You can move all 3 of these to an external hard drive if you like. Again, do not use your Time Machine backup drive for this purpose. That is for making a backup copy, not for holding the originals.
Once you have another drive you can move the afore mentioned large items if they are indeed taking up a large amount of space.
    iTunes: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
    iPhoto: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229
    iMovie: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/8.0/en/19555.html
    Hope that helps.

  • Is there any way to use a late 2009 21.5 inch iMac as an external screen for an early 2011 MacBook Pro?

    Hi there,
I'm trying to work out if there is any way that I can use my late 2009 21.5 inch iMac (running OS X 10.6.8; mindisplay port) as an external or second monitor when connected to my early 2011 13" MacBook Pro (OS X 10.6.8; thunderbolt).
From what I've read online, I gather that I cannot simply connect the two with a minidisplay port to thunderbolt cable, as the iMac does not support target display mode. I know I can 'share screens', but this doesn't give me much of an improvement on size compared to just using my MacBook.
Are there any other potential work arounds I might have missed? Any suggestions (or even conclusive answers to suggest I'm wasting my time by continuing to think about it!) would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks!

Sorry but no, you are asking about Target Display Mode and the 2009/2010 21.5" iMacs did not support that, only the 27" iMacs did. You can read up on TDM in Apple's Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
