Convert/Mixdown Stereo Wav to Mono Wav

Hello,
i have a problem with automating Quicktime via Applescript. I´ve got thousands of two channel stereo interleaved pcm coded (aif, wav) audio files that i want to convert to split stereo files, i.e. mystereo.wav --> mystereo.L.wav AND mystereo.R.wav
I found a solution to save a QT-export-settings file with Applescript following these instructions: http://lists.apple.com/archives/QuickTime-Users/2002/Nov/msg00294.html. So this is how i made the export set to MONO!
My idea was to open the stereo interleaved file, set the pan to left, export to mono, then set the pan to right and export again to mono. I automated theses actions with applescript and it seems to work. BUT ...
Unfortunately quicktime exports 2.0 stereo tracks (one channel silent, the other with programme) instead of following the export settings and merge to mono?
Am i doing something wrong?
Why behaves QT this way?
How can i force quicktime to export mono files?
Thanks in advance for your answers.

Not sure about the Applescript part (I am just delving into that myself), but the method I use to output separate L and R channel mono files from a stereo interleaved in Quicktime is as follows:
1) Open the stereo file, bring up the Movie Properties window (Command-J)
2) Click the "Soundtrack" entry in the list, then click the "Audio Settings" tab
3) On the right hand side of the window is a list of Channel Assignments.
4) For your Left channel export, assign channel 1 to "Left" and channel 2 to "Unused" from the pop-up list.
5) Choose "Export" from the file menu, select "Sound to WAVE" or "Sound to AIFF"
6) Click the "Options" button, choose your setttings, and make sure that "Mono" is selected in the Channels setting.
7) Name the file "mystereo.L.wav"
Repeat steps 4-7 for the Right channel (e.g. set Channel 1 to "Unused" and Channel 2 to "Right")
Let me know if you get anywhere with the Applescript, I do this manually every week to separate L and R channels for a podcast I produce, and would love to have a more automated way to deal with it.

    Hi
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
    iDVD pref file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named. com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)

    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort. from Craig. Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.
If You do a re-install be sure to get rid of all iDVD old parts AND then EMPTY the Trash-basket !

  • Premiere CS5 to Encore 5.1 Blu Ray track from six mono wave files

When preparing a 5.1 mix for a theater presentation, I had repeated trouble trying to get a blu ray disk to reflect the 5.1 mix our sound engineer created, so, having had success this time, I wanted to record my procedure.  You gurus might catch something I missed, so critique this where necessary:
I'm running Windows 7 Professional, Premiere CS5 and Encore CS5.
You will need to purchase the Minnetonka Surcode for 5.1 ( http://www.minnetonkaaudio.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=56&Itemid=74)
    Mine installed without any hitches.
In your Premiere sequence, make sure you create a 5.1 Master audio track.  (Very important)
    Create 6 5.1 audio tracks
Import your six mono wave files.  (L.wav, R.wav, Ls.wav, Rs.wav, C.wav, LFE.wav) but DO NOT drag them to the timeline yet.
Right click on each .wav file in the project panel.   For each one, select Modify -> Audio Channels
In this dialogue box, you can select mono, stereo, mono as stereo, or 5.1.  Choose 5.1.
Each of your wav files should be mapped to the proper representation of the 5.1 icon, with the black dot appearing where the final name would imply. (the *c.wav file would match the icon as it appears below.
Continuously click on the icon will bring up new channel options. (see illustration below)
For more info on channel mapping, see:  http://help.adobe.com/en_US/PremierePro/4.0/WS1c9bc5c2e465a58a91cf0b1038518aef7-7f46a.html
    (continued..)
When all your wav files are mapped to the master 5.1 audio track, you can drag them to the sequence and  you can export your audio file.
    File -> export -> media
My objectives was to get an *.ac3 file to drop into my encore project, since I had trouble with dynamic link, so the next step for me was:
Format:  H.264 Blu-ray (note export audio only didn't give me the 5.1 surcode option, but I got it this way:)
    uncheck export video
export settings, h.264 Blu-Ray, Dolby Digital, SurCode for Dolby Digital
    Our engineer recommended:
    Dialog Normalization should be -31
Dynamic Compression should be set to none
The export resulted in an AC3 file that was a perfect match to the sound mixer's file on his end.

You can skip the Modify step and just route the tracks from the Mixer.

  • How to bounce or render a mono wav file?

Hello all....this seems like a basic question, but I'm stumped. How do you bounce a stereo project to a mono (sum of both L and R) file? I switched the little "interlocking circles" symbol on the master output to a single circle, but that seems to move the summed audio to the L channel only, and then looking at the bounced file, it creates a stereo L + R channel, with the audio showing up on the L and a blank R channel. What I want is a single waveform containing both L + R audio, resulting in a balanced sound in L and R speakers. This should also result in half the file size of a stereo wav file the same length.
    Thanks in advance.

Set the Stereo Outst to mono, then use the little bounce button underneath the fader to bounce. Using a bounce keycommand will always result in a stereo bounce. Using that little button will create a true mono file. If you have already inserted stereo Plugs on the Master Out this will not work, the Outs will remain stereo. So remove those plugs first.

  • How do I bounce as WAVs and MONO?

How can I bounce each of my tracks in Logic as WAVs and in Mono? I need a step by step guide.

All great info, and thanks guys.  I was having the same dilemma,
I am using L9, and recordign a microphone for voice overs.  My client kept telling me they wanted mono .wav files.  When I create a mono track and slect the stereo output, and click the stereo/mono symbol next to bounce so it's one circel and not two, it was still giving me stereo files.  When I bounce an mp3 the same way, the dialog box where you can name your bounce, also lets you choose mono or stereo mp3's.
But the dialog box for a .wav or .aif bounce does NOT give you the option to choose stereo or mono. So, I was always getting stereo files.
Now I tried switching my track output to a bus and, when tellling the bus to go either to a mono output L or R, or the same stereo output, I get mono files - two of them. And each file is half the volume of the original or stereo bounces.  How do we get a full volume output in mono?

or can iTunes or Quicktime perform this task?
    Yes to both.
In Quicktime Export -> Export Sound to Wave
In iTunes, check your preferences for General>Import and then right click on the file to convert to WAV
    Also STP can do that.
Double click the file to open it in the File Editor and Save as, then select Wave as the filetype.

  • ADAT stereo recorded as split mono: best way to convert to stereo?

    Hello everyone,
I have session material on an ADAT that have stereo files split on two mono tracks (e.g. channels 1 & 2) and thus were recorded in logic on mono audio tracks (e.g.1 & 2). What is the next step to insure easy editing abilities?
For example, is there a “link” button similar to FCP that will allow edits to effect both tracks? If not, should bounce the two audio tracks into one stereo track? “Convert to Stereo” does not work in the audio window, as Logic does not recognize these as split stereo files. Same seems to apply for "convert regions to new audio files" in the arrange window.
Thanks in advance for your help! Sorry for the newbe question, I dont work with audio that often, especially coming from DAT.

Is it really worth it/necessary? I will in the future make sure to record them as stereo tracks. I guess experience is the best teacher

  • Convert square wave to sinc wave

Can anyone please show me how to convert square wave to sinc wave?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Use the wave generator funtions found in palette Signal Processing - Waveform Generation.  There are sine and triangle waveform generating functions there.  You can set the number of samples and sample rate such that it would generate a partial waveform.  Then you use Get Waveform Components to get the Y values, concat the values, then use Build Waveform to build it back to a waveform.  You will get a back to back output.  In the following example, I used a sine and square wave because a sine and triangle were too close in appearance and you could not readily see the effect.
As Smercurio says, I don't think this is a very good representation of an EKG signal.  That signal has P, QRS, and T waves.  There is no sine wave.  The waves are like triangle waves, so just put DC waveforms (0 amplitude square wave) ahead of and in between triangle waves for P, QRS, and T, followed by DC.

Can anyone recommend a nice convenient application to convert my phone's recordings from AMR format to MP3 or WAV - eg. something I can conveniently listen to on my PC?
    Thanks in advance!

Many of my friends recommend iDealshare VideoGo to convert AMR files to MP3 or WAV.
Today i just have a try, and find it really works great in converting AMR to MP3, WAV, WMA, AAC, AIFF etc with high audio quality.

we had labview lab last week.. were doing fine if we have instructions unfortunately the professor will give us an exercise regarding baseband signals spectra.. were trying to download a trial software but we dont have any luck. the question asks for us to change analog waves into digital waves, measure the amplitude of the 5-th harmonic using spectrum analyzer.. i hope you can help me thnx..

After you are successful getting LabVIEW on your computer, put together something to at least show us you're up for learning.  Then we can guide you to a solution that you've developed (mostly) on your own.

  • "Play stereo Audio as Mono"

I recently was tearing out my hair because I had mono checked (somehow). It was playing Mono through my Apogee Duet Audio interface, but playing stereo through my headphones jack on the core audio. I remembered it always worked fine in Snow Leopard, so I installed SL on a partition for testing purposes and sure enough the Duet played in stereo. So naturally I thought there was a problem with the drivers between Lion and the Duet. After much discussion with Apogee, frustration and online searching I found out about this "Play stereo Audio as Mono" business.
In your next update or release, please link "Play stereo Audio as Mono" in the Sound preferences pane as well. It is a major problem when your audio is playing in mono and you cannot figure out why because the option is hidden away in "Universal Access". As a non-impared user of OSX I have no need to go into "Universal Access".
    Thank you.

Then I'm stumped. I don't know why or what to do.
You could go around the issue by running a script at login to set this option. Here's a script I found on the net:
    --script begins
    on run
              tell application "System Preferences"
      activate
reveal anchor "Hearing" of pane id "com.apple.preference.universalaccess"
              end tell
tell application "System Events" to tell process "System Preferences"
click checkbox 2 of tab group 1 of window 1
              end tell
              quit application "System Preferences"
    end run
    --script ends
(It requires the "Enable access for assistive devices" pref to be enabled.)
Save it as an app in a convenient location (eg, <~/Library/Scripts>), and add it to your Login Items. It will run every time you log back in. Note that this is a toggle—if the preference is on, it will turn it off.
