Handbrake is the way to go.
Quicktime Pro does not have the ability to rip and convert DVDs.

I have just asked a question about downloading MacKeeper elsewhere - why do you say not to download it? Does it not work or is it malicious?

I have lots of CD's and cassette tapes that I would like to get into a digital format for use on an Iphone or Ipad. The windows world has a free program on the CNET downloads site called "Free Studio" that does all this stuff. Anyone know the best way to convert on a Mac Mini?

Normally you would use your itunes to import the CDs. Then you can sync them to your iphone.
For analog tapes/cassettes I use Audacity to record and then export them to wav or mp3 formats, load them into itunes and sync to the iphone.

Convert Word for Mac 3 documents

Sorry for my borderline inquiry: I am sitting on some older documents written by WORD for Mac 3 (in the early nineties) that I need to open again for my work. MS Word 2004 doesn't, neither does Apple Works or even MacLinkPlus up from version 12.
The MS site is not very helpful on this issue, but perhaps you guys can give me a hint on a suitable converter utility.

An older version (AppleWorks 5, or ClarisWorks) has the appropriate MacLink translators for Word 3. If you don't have access to an older version (and if the file isn't huge or doesn't contain sensitive information), you can send it to me and I will see if I can resave it in a current format.

Convert WMV for Mac losslessly?

Is there any way to convert WMV to any Mac supported video format without losing quality?
I recently switched from PC to Mac, and Picasa (for Mac) is refusing to acknowledge my WMV files. I tried installing Flip4Mac to see if that would convince Picasa to come around, but it does not. So it looks like I have to convert them, but I really don't want to lose quality.
Anybody know of anything? Free software would be nice.

I have a ton of wmv files for professional presentations from my 'pre-Mac' days, and because work computers are Windows based. What you installed is a QT component from Flip4Mac. It allows QT Pro or other applications that tap into the QT Tools package to export and/or transcode WMV files. Unfortunately, Flip4Mac wants about $50 for you to register the component and gain full use of these routines. This is about 2 and a half times what I think it is worth, so I don't use it. Best bet is to either try to find the music videos in another format (like MPEG1) or see if there is another program that will convert WMV to a format (like AVI or MPEG1) which iSquint can handle. Since I don't use WMV, I have never looked for such a Mac application, but perhaps other readers have and can post their recommendations here.

I don't think you need to use a ripper program to read a home movie DVD. Those are primarily for copy-protected commercial DVDs, right?
I think you just need to transcode the DVD files using a utility like Handbrake, which is free and fast.

When using Captivate 7 on a PC, I received the tip to just run Captivate in Administrator mode. Does that also apply to Captivate 8? If so, how do I do it with a Mac (with a PC, I would just right-click) or is it even necessary?
