Convert Premiere Elements 7 projects to Premiere Pro

I took advantage of the recent promotion to upgrade to Premiere Pro from Elements 7.  Now I simply want to convert my old files created in Elements to Premiere Pro.  If I simply open the Elements file in Premiere Pro, it says it needs to convert the file and asks for location/file name.   OK, and it pulls in the "Assets", but nothing on the timeline.  Is this the extent of the conversion?
I saw a comment (another forum) that said rename the Elements file to a Premiere Pro file, then open it.  That didn't work either.
I've tried (for my limit of half an hour) to find another discussion on this topic, but can't find one.
Also, to date, I'm extremely pleased with Premiere Pro.  I work with AVCCAM files and it handles them much better than Elements (on the same machine).
I run on Windows XP (i7 processor)
Thanks in adance for any insight.

Common wisdom is to finish your project in the version you started with. I don't think it is possible to convert, but given the number of problems converting from one version to another within PR, it is highly inadvisable to even try it.
Finish first, then start NEW projects in PR.
Nothing on the timeline is easily remedied by double clicking on the sequence in the project panel of the converted project.

  • Error Importing Premiere Elements project into Premiere Pro CS5

    Hi,
I am working on a multi-part video project that I started in Premiere Elements 8.  I put in hours upon hours of editing on the first part and I found that the more I edited, the more often the program would crash (infuriating!).  So I started using Premiere Pro CS5 to produce the second part, resolving to come back to the first part later.  Well, I've come back around to needing this first part done, and it is just undoable in Elements (crashes every 20 seconds!).  I'd like to import that project into CS5 if possible.  The help documentation says this should be perfectly possible... but I'm having no luck.
When I attempt to open my Premiere Elements project in Premiere Pro, it tells me the project must be converted from Elements .prel to Pro .prproj, and I click through the prompts as normal.  But then as soon as it starts trying to open the project, I get this:
"The Project could not be loaded. It may be damaged or contain outdated elements."
I downloaded the Premiere Elements 9 trial to see if it would be less crashy (and it is), but I'd really prefer to have all my video in one program, and CS5 does the best job (and has most of my hours invested).  Elements 9 opens the "damaged" project just fine and I can edit and export normally, so why can't CS5?
Am I stuck recreating the project from the ground up in CS5?

In very general terms, a contemporary PrE Project (PREL), will Open in PrPro, with the steps that you outlined.
Now, there are all sorts of considerations, for aspects that will not likely work:
Instant Movie/Themes, as PrPro cannot read those
Some Effects that PrPro does not have, like the NewBlue FX
Some Transitions that PrPro does not have
Some Title animation Presets, that PrPro does not have
Do you have any of the above in your PrE Project? There are probably other circumstances, but those are all that come immediately to my mind.
The simpler the PrE Project, the greater the likelyhood that it will Convert to a PrPro PRPROJ file.
PrE 8 and PrPro CS5 should be close enough to work, again in those general terms. I can Open simple PrE 4.0 Projects in PrPro 2.0, but cannot Open PrE 7, 8 or 9 Projects in PrPro 2.0.
    Good luck,

  • Opening Premiere Elements Project In Premiere Pro

I am evaluating (and just starting to learn) Premiere Pro CS5. I have a project I've done in Premiere Elements 7, and understand I can open this in Premier Pro. When I do this, it wants to convert the project, which I say ok to. However, after this, it opens showing the various clips, etc. in the project window, but there is nothing in the timeline window.
I was expecting/hoping that all the timelines from the Elements project would transfer over - is that supposed to happen?
Thanks for any assistance on this.

When on Imports a Project, the Sequence's Timeline is usually in a Bin. Twirl open the Bins, until you find that, and then Dbl-click on it. That should open the Timeline.
Good luck, and remember that there are elements in PrE, that will not translate to PrPro, such as Instant Movies, Themes, and several Transitions and Effects, such as those from New BlueFX, as they do not exist in PrPro. Otherwise, you should be able to Convert the PREL to a PRPROJ file, and edit it. Note: you cannot go the other direction, from PrPro to PrE.
Enjoy you tests, and also remember that if you have the trial, nothing MPEG will work.

  • Trouble opening Premiere Elements project in Premiere Pro

    Hi All,
Just bought Production Premium CS6. I've been working on a project in Premiere Elements 9, and I'd like to continue working on it in the new snazzy Premiere Pro CS6. But when I try to open the project file I get the following error:
"The project could not be loaded, it may be damaged or contain outdated elements."
I can still open the project in PrE, though, and I can even open other PrE projects in PrPro.
I've tried opening autosave versions, but always get the same error.
Any thoughts on what else to try? I really hate the idea of dropping so much money on PrPro and having to continue editing in PrE.
    Thanks!
    Martin

So long as the versions of PrE and PrPro are contemporary, the PREL (PrE Project file) should open, or Import, with some caveats:
There are many 3rd party Effects and Transitions, that are in PrE, that do not exist in PrPro - hence their use can cause issues. An example would be the NewBlue FX Effects/Transitions.
There are features in PrE, that do not exist in PrPro, and these can cause problems. An example would be Themes/Instant Movie.
PrE has a tiny subset of the Sonic AuthorCore modules (a larger subset makes up the basis of Encore) used for DVD/BD authoring, and if one has done any authoring in PrE, such as Create Menus, or the application of Chapter, or Menu Markers. Those authoring aspects can cause problems.
First, I would attempt to Import (not Open) the PREL into PrPro.
If that does not work, go back into PrE, and check for 3rd party Effect/Transitions, and remove any. Check for Menu or Chapter Markers, or Menus, and remove those. Same for Themes, or Instant Movies - remove all. Try again.
Now, PrE 9 and CS6 are not really contemporary. PrE 9 came out during the run of CS5 (not CS6), and PrE 10 (changes made in the program) is closer to CS5.5, and perhaps CS6. There could well be just enough difference, as to create problems there, and a PrE 9 PREL just might be far enough back, as to preclude CS6 being able to either Open, or Import it.
    Good luck,

  • Just "upgraded" to Premiere Pro CC (Mac) - what about my Premiere Elements Projects?

    Hi all:
I just purchased a Creative Cloud membership - and was very excited to get started... However, I have just learned that I cannot open my Premiere Elements projects in Premiere Pro - because I use a Mac.  Does anyone have any suggestions for the BEST way for me to be able to work on my existing Elements projects in Pro? I'm assuming that I need to export the Elements projects into .mov or .mpeg formats, etc. and then import them that way.  Obviously I will only be able to edit the "finished product" - and not undo/redo effects/transitions/etc..  If I'm on the right track, can someone let me know the best export settings to use?
ALSO - I had been using the Elements Organizer for all of my clips/video etc. - I'm going to assume that Premiere Pro does not interface with this?
Thanks VERY much in advance for any help!
    Kim

So... why does Adobe claim Premiere Pro CC supports PREL project files?
    http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/transferring-importing-files.html
I work in Windows, and have found this not to be true. Anyone have any thoughts on why they are claiming compatibility?

  • Premiere Elements Project file wount open in Premiere Pro CS6

My friend Just bought Premiere elements 13 and created a Project. I cant open the Project in Premiere Pro CS6. Getting this error message:
"The Project appears to be damaged, it cannot be opened."
The Project workes fine in Premiere Elements 13
What can I do? What is wrong?

    If you have done this:
Import a Premiere Elements project (Windows only)
       Select File > Open Project.
Browse to an Adobe Premiere Elements project file, with file extension PREL.
       Click Open.
Premiere Pro converts the Premiere Elements project file to a Premiere Pro project file.
and it wont work Elements 13 is probably too new for CS6.

  • Open a premiere cs4 project with premiere elements 9

Can I open a premiere cs4 project with premiere elements 9 to edit it.
    Thanks in advance

I'm going to throw out a somewhat educated guess and say no.  Despite the similar monikers, Premiere Elements and Premiere Pro are two different programs.

  • Premiere elements 12 on Mackbook Pro running Maverick

Premiere elements 12 on macbook pro running maverick. Crashes on opening with multi page error message.  reinstall does not help

Also, don't forget to run a Disk Verification and a Font Check on your Mac. Corrupt fonts can cause some real problems for this program.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/940869?tstart=0
It also matters where you got your copy of the program from. The version available in the App Store has had so many problems that Apple pulled it.
There may also be issues with your Retina display, if you have that feature.

how do i convert a slideshow made in premiere elements 11 to premiere elements 12

Given that you have Photoshop Elements 11 and Premiere Elements 12 on the same computer....
    1. Know the name of the Elements Organizer 11 catalog (See Elements Organizer 11 File Menu/Manage Catalogs/Catalog Manager).
    Close out of there.
    2. Open the Elements Organizer 12, accessed from Premiere Elements 12.
    3. In the Elements Organizer 12, go to File Menu/Manage Catalogs/Catalog Manager and click on the Convert button in the Catalog Manager dialog.
    4. In the Convert Catalog dialog that appears, look for the name of your Elements Organizer 11 catalog, select it, and then hit the Convert command at the bottom of that Convert Catalog dialog.
    5. From that point onward, follow the messages that you get from the program. (If you have any problems, I will go into deeper details.)
When all is done, you will have your Elements Organizer 11 catalog opened in Elements Organizer 12 where it will remain in use until you switch to another catalog there. Your Elements Organizer 11 will remain as it was in Elements Organizer 11. Moving forward, what you do in the converted catalog in Elements Organizer 12 will not affect the Elements Organizer 11 and vice versa.
Please let us know if you are OK with the above and if it worked for you.
    Thank you.

  • Does FCP perform better than adobe premiere elements on a MacBook Pro?

does FCP perform better than adobe premiere elements on a MacBook Pro?
    Background:
    * just trying to decide what to go for re video editing app with more features than iMovie
    * last time I'd tried Adobe Premiere Elements on my MacBook (but it was before I had an SSD) the performance was not good - it was sluggish to the point I really didn't want to use it
    * so this question is just about whether in general FCP X performs better on a Mac (you'd think it would no, as it's made/optimized for a Mac)
    My MacBook:
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Elements is essentially an amateur app and Premiere a professional one similar to the discontinued Final Cut Pro 7.
FCP X is a radical new approach to editing which like Marmite, you either love or hate.
It is probably between the 2 in capabitlity but much closer to Premiere.
Some might say it was better than Premiere, whilst other long standing broadcast editors would disagree.
It all depends on your standpoint and I am trying to give an unbiased appraisal.
Some of the techniques it uses are way ahead of all other apps and this is what worries people who have an established way of working, though as I mentioned in another post, there are a few omissions which have upset those editors.
Some might say (echoes of Jeremy Clarkson) that FCP X is the most advanced editing app on the planet albeit with a few teething troubles.

  • Import a Premiere CS3 Project into Premiere Elements 7.

Is it possible (or NOT) import a Premiere CS3 Project into Premiere Elements 7?
Thanks a lot for any help.

It is only possible to open some PrE Projects into the right version of PrPro, but will not work the other way around. The error message that you will get is "This Project was created in Adobe PrPro and you need to open it in that program."
Even going the PrE to PrPro route is filled with potholes. I can open some PrE 4 Projects in PrPro 2.0, but not all - depends on what was done. Later versions of PrE will not open in PrPro 2.0, but some have opened in CS3 and CS4, though much can keep one from being able to do that.
    Sorry for the bad news,

It has been the case that you cannot open a Premiere Elements project file (.prel) created in a later version in an earlier version.
And, you cannot open a Premiere Elements Windows project file in Premiere Elements Mac and vice versa.

  • Editing Premiere cs4 project with premiere elements 9?

Can I open a premiere cs4 project with premiere elements 9 to edit it.
    Thanks in advance

You are most welcome, though it's probably not the answer that you wanted.
There are just so very many differences between the two programs. As a test recently, I took a PREL from PrE 8, IIRC, and it would not even open in my PrPro 2.0, like my simple PrE 4 Projects would. That PrE 8 test Project was also simple, with no Themes, or Instant Movies - just Cuts and some common Transitions, no Effects. Just too different to Open.
    Good luck,

  • Exporting from premiere elements 4 to premiere elements 10

I am converting over from premiere elements 4 to premiere elements 10. I Have titles that were created in 4 that I would like to use in elements 10. Is there an easy way to export from one to the other?

    Welcome to the forum.
You will want to Export as a Template, into the folder of your choice. That will yield a .PRTL file, that can then be opened in PrE 10. Unfortunately, I know of no way to automate, or batch that, so you will want to launch PrE 4, and then the Project(s), Select the particular Title, and choose Export>Template (or similar syntax).
I have my personal Title Templates located in a "Hunt Titles" folder. It is then available to PrE and PrPro.
    Good luck,

    Yes.
From your purchased Premiere Elements 4 Windows
    Local Disc C

    DVD Templates
    General
and in the General Folder is the Generic One Folder with the theme's assets..

in the Common Folder create a new Folder named something like "My PE4 Menu".
    2. In that "My PE4 Menu" Folder paste the whole
    Generic One Folder.
You should find your your Generic One choice under Tools/Movie Menu....
Been road tested. It works for me. Please let us know if that works for you also.

  • Premiere Elements project imported into Premiere Pro CS5.5 becomes unusable after first save

I have Premiere Pro CS5.5, and I have been trying for some time to successfuly edit an old project that was originally created in Premiere Elements (not sure which version--probably 7.0). It has the .prel extension. The project imports just fine, and I am able to edit it initially. However, if I save my new Premiere Pro project, close Pr and try to open the new project again, I get the "The project could not be loaded, it may be damaged or contain outdated elements." error message. I have tried many of the various project recovery suggestions people have made in this forum and elsewhere online, but none of them seem to work. I even opened the project in XML Wrench, but there were no errors returned when I clicked "check is well formed." Once I close the project after doing some initial editing, it is gone. Is this a known issue? Is there any way I can be able to edit the old project in Pr and save my work? Thanks!

Have you tried using the project manager to re-copy all elements and timeline etc into a totally new directory. I'm just curious to see if that would make a difference. I'd be intrested to see if when making a new project in this manor if it would because as you have stated the normal save methods haven't.
