Convert PS to PDF with Preview

I've been using Preview forever to open PS files. Recently, when I try to open the PS file, I get a file error following the converting PS to PDF bubble. There is nothing wrong with the PS file (can open with ColorSync or GIMP). Any idea on a fix?
Cliff

By a PS file, I assume you mean Photoshop file. I also use Preview to open my PS files.
Try converting the PS file to a PDF in Photoshop.
In PS choose File > Save As... then choose PDF from the settings list.

  • Converting JPGs to PDFs with Preview

I have a large collection of jpgs I would like to convert into multi-page PDFs. However, whenever I use Preview to save a jpg as a PDF, it ends up cropping the image. Am I doing something wrong?

Doesn't crop when I do it your way, so I can't offer any direct suggestions, but perhaps try using Print to save as a pdf.

  • How do I crop a PDF with Preview.

How do I crop a PDF with Preview.
For some strange reason, when I crop a PDF using preview the rest of the PDF is still “their” when opened using other software.
I truly want to crop a PDF and have the uncropped portions completely go away.  Do I really have to open Photoshop to do this?

"there" not "their"  -  unless I am really confused about what you are doing !
I put a white rectangle over what I wanted to crop out of the pdf I was working on.
Not a  proper solution, i then needed to use "export as PDF" of my PDF so that the next user of the document couldn't simply lift off the rectangle I had put on the document to cover what ideally I would have removed.
Add mark up is something else I tried, to black out the text that I wanted concealed, but we are limited to a slim choice of colours, not including black.
I would like to see a function "crop" with "crop inside" and "crop outside" options. I am not familiar with Adobe or other software. Presumably since they invented it, Adobe is the place to go if you have repeated exercises requiring meddling with Adobe documents.

  • Can't blank out a portion of a PDF with Preview?

On my old iBook circa 2005 I can eliminate portions of a PDF with Preview, using Annotate, making a box over the area I don't want, coloring it white and voila! Now with my newish MBPr I can only get a white rectangle with a visible border around it. Grr. Is there no way any more to "blank out" areas of a PDF that I want to print and save my printer ink, as well as make the image take up less space on the page?

Solved again. Just use the crop and save as another PDF, serves the same function.

  • Bulk convert text to PDF with Acrobat

Hi. When I convert a text file to PDF with Acrobat X Pro the character spacing in the resulting file is incorrect.  The columns of numbers which do correctly line up in the text file, do not line up correctly in the PDF file.  I adjust the settings for the conversion in the CREATE PDF FROM WEB PAGE box and I choose a fixed-width font.   If I use Adobe PDF Converter (the printer driver) the result is perfect.  If I open the text file with Microsoft Word and then convert it to PDF with PDFMaker, it is also perfect. I want to use Acrobat so that I can bulk convert my 300 text files to PDF.   Can you please help as I have tried everything?  Thank you.  Paul Pontikis (Deakin University)

Thank you for responding LoriAUC.  I have 300 (*.txt) files that I only ever open with Notepad. I don't every open them in a web browser.  I want to bulk convert them to PDF.  The orientation of the resulting PDFs must be landscape.  It appears that the only way to select LANDSCAPE in Acrobat is to adjust the settings in the CREATE PDF FROM WEB PAGE box.  It seems that Acrobat uses its HTML Conversion Engine to convert text files to PDF.  When I do this and then bulk convert them using Bulk Convert Files to PDF, the orientation is correct, that is, landscape instead of the default portrait setting, however the character spacing is imprecise and the columns of data are wavy.

  • PDFs with Preview and Safari:

When I open a web based PDF in Safari and then choose "open in Preview" where is that file that I am now viewing in Preview located? On the web still? downloaded to the hdd? I can't find it in a spotlight search.

I had a similar probem after updating to the newest Safari -- and I posted that question on the forum this morning.  Like you, I didn't have any adobe plug-ins.  then I read another post that made sense:
find a pdf document that you know opens in Preview. Do a command-I on that document's icon.  Then you'll see 1/2 way down an item that says "open with Preview" - click on the arrow beside that, then beside it you'll see "use this application to open all documents like this one"  Under that, you'll see "change all" -- and it will change all pdfs to automatically open with Preview instead of Adobe. From then on Safari worked perfectly
Then I wondered why I didn't have the Adobe plug-in that people were telling me to disable - so I downloaded Adobe Reader again - looked in the library and sure enough there was the plug-in - so I went ahead and disabled the Adobe pdf plug-in (by dumping it in the trash).
so far so good -- first time that Safari 6.02 has worked for me since I installed it.

  • Extracting from a pdf with preview

A few months ago, i have extracted details of an pdf-document with the following workflow: selecting an area with the mouse, apple-c (for copy), apple-n (new document of the between file). Then preview opend a new pdf-document with the selected details.
Now, a few months later, preview opens with the whole content of the page, where the selection happens.
    Can anyone help?
    Achim

The best way to extract part of a pdf document is to use the built-in capture function (command-shift-4) and select the area you want with the mouse. Your selection will be saved to the desktop as a png file which will open with preview.

  • Convert rtf to pdf with good font and sharp images

I can convert rtf to pdf in Microsoft Word (2004) using the Print function but the resulting document doesn't maintain the same font and the images look a bit hinky as a result.
I tried to convert from rtf to pdf in Acrobat 9 but it sez unsupported file type.
I just want a really clean conversion that keeps the images sharp and the fonts looking good.  Am I out of luck?

  • Download and then open PDFs with Preview instead of viewing PDFs within Safari

hello, I am running Safari 6.0.2 and since this update PDF files are automatically opened within Safari. This seems to be a new feature. In my older version of Safari whenever I clicked a pdf it was downloaded to my "Downloads" folder and then automatically opened with Preview. The option open "safe" files after downloading in Safari -> Preferences -> General is ticked. So as soon as a download a PDF file it should automatically be opened with Preview. However, I cannot figure out how to download a PDF file from a google link. I googled and people suggested to use alt + mouse click on the google search result link to download the PDF. However, whenever I tried this instead of downlading the PDF file it downloads a .html file which is then apparently not opened. Also using the option "download linked file" or "download linked file as" only downloads a url.html file and not the PDF. I searched and searched for any possible solutions but cannot find any. I am really suprised that no one has yet really complained about that. Any ideas of how to fix that problem?

I had a similar probem after updating to the newest Safari -- and I posted that question on the forum this morning.  Like you, I didn't have any adobe plug-ins.  then I read another post that made sense:

  • Firefox 3.6.13 / Mac OSX.6.6, open-PDF-with Preview preference is not retained across sessions

Using Firefox 3.6.13 / Mac OSX 10.6.6, when I visit PDF-file links, the default ALWAYS reverts to saving file in downloads folder. I go to Firefox -> Preferences -> Applications -> Search PDF, set Open-With Preview (Default). Fo rhtat session of Firefox, everything is fine. The next time I sure Firefox it has forgotten this preference and I have to set it AGAIN. Every time I restart FF.
Although I had Adobe reader also installed, Adobe doesn't seem to be grabbing the PDF ring wither, it's always reverting to saving files. What's wrong?

Here's the fix. Dump Firefox 3.6.13 and Re-Install Firefox 3.5.16. Problem solved.

  • I need help with creating PDF with Preview...

    Hello
I need help with creating PDF documetns with Preview. Just a few days ago, I was able to create PDF files composed of scanned images (notes) and everything worked perfectly fine. However, today I was having trouble with it. I scanned my notebook and saved 8 images/pages in jpeg format. I did the usual routine with Preview (select all files>print>PDF>save as PDF>then save). Well this worked a few days ago, but when I tried it today, I was able to save it, but the after opening the PDF file that I have saved, only the first page was there. The other pages weren't included. I really don't see anything wrong with what I'm doing. I really need help. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can't find it.  I went into advanced and then document processing but no batch sequence is there and everything is grayed out.
EDIT: I realized that you cant do batch sequences in standard.  Any other ideas?

  • Incomprehensible Editing of PDF with Preview

I used to LOVE using Preview to do simple PDF document editing .. mostly just combining PDF files together. All you had to do was drag the PDF file into the sidebar of an existing one to append them together and you were done. Perfect!
Now here is Snow Leopard and suddenly things have gone all ape-****. I can no longer figure out WHAT the side-bar is doing. I drag a PDF file into it and it seems to simply display that PDF file but doesnt combine the pages ... instead I get an incomprehensible hybrid view of two distinct PDF files kinds sorta wrapped into one view. Which I cannot seem to save and cannot seem to flatten. Save is utterly confusing ... I seem to save the file, but I only really save bits of it. I'm stumped .. Apple have taken a simple elegant model and made it virtually unusable.
What's going on here? Is there something obvious I'm missing? Does anyone have ANY idea what Apple were intending with this utterly confusing "feature" ?

    See http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071114191806624 and http://macintoshhowto.com/leopard/how-to-merge-pdf-files-with-preview-in-leopard .html

  • Automatically open pdf with Preview

I noticed that after upgrading to 10.5, pdf do not automatically open with Preview. I know that in 10.4, I was able to change this in Safari, but this option seems to have vanished in 10.5. Any help?

Right click to "download" (save) the PDF files to your machine and then use Preview as the "Open With" app.

  • HT2506 How can I open uscis.gov/files/form/n-400.pdf with Preview?

    Problem (A)
When I try to open some PDFs, such as uscis.gov/files/form/n-400.pdf with OS X Preview, I get the error message:
    "Please wait...
If this message is not eventually replaced by the proper contents of the document, your PDF viewer may not be able to display this type of document.
You can upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Reader for Windows®, Mac, or Linux® by visiting http://www.adobe.com/go/reader_download.
For more assistance with Adobe Reader visit http://www.adobe.com/go/acrreader.
Windows is either a registered trademark or a trademark of Microsoft Corporation in the United States and/or other countries. Mac is a trademark of Apple Inc., registered in the United States and other countries. Linux is the registered trademark of Linus Torvalds in the U.S. and other countries."
Apple presents Preview as being a better substitute for Adobe Reader, but in this case it does not work at all. (I think this may relate to PDFs with entry fields in them.)
    Problem (B)
If I set the documents having this problem to be opened with Adobe Reader instead of Preview, the next time I save them from Adobe Reader, they are reset to open with Preview again.
I thus have to always do Open with… for them, or else set all my PDF documents to be opened with Adobe Reader.
Can anyone offer any workarounds for problem (A) or (B)?
Does anyone know Apple's position on problem (A)? Will they eventually fix Preview so that it opens PDF documents such as the one above, or will Preview only ever work on a sub-set of PDF documents?
If Adobe is refusing to provide Apple the information needed to open certain types of PDF documents, does anyone know Adobe's position on this?
    Thank you

What version O/S do you have?  10.7.4 is latest.
I have something for you to try.  I'm reading that Lion supports two different types of file-type association.  That is, in addition to a global ".PDF opens with Preview" you can also have a file-by-file setting to over-ride the global one and have it open is something else - like Adobe Reader.
So, how about you test this out to see if its true?
First chainge your global .PDF back to Preview:
    http://osxdaily.com/2009/10/25/change-file-associations-in-mac-os-x/
Or reset everything  back to defaults:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1282118
Then when you come accross something that won't open in Preview, use this to set just that file to open in Adobe Reader:
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/08/15/easily-set-file-association-in-mac-os-x-lion-usin g-always-open-with-app/
There is also a utility for controlling the file-type settings - but - I don't know if it supports this new feature:
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/14618/rcdefaultapp
(if this a new feature and hasn't been around all along and I just didn't know about it)
