Convert text from Appleworks 5 to Pages?

My grandfater just got a new iMac to replace his old OS 9 one.
All his files (memoirs, geneology, etc) are in Appleworks 5.0.4
His new iMac has Pages. I've figured out how to get the files to the new iMac, but Pages says that it's from an unsupported version.
He's resigned to re-typing everything in.
I can't believe that Apple doesn't provide an upward compatibility path!
How do I convert his files?

Pages is only able to open AppleWorks 6 word processing documents. If you don't have AppleWorks 5 any more or have a Mac that can't run Classic, there are some other options to get those AppleWorks 5 word processing documents into Pages.
icWord from Panergy Software is able to open AppleWorks 5 word processing files & save them as AppleWorks 6 which Pages will open. It may be able to do a batch conversion. You can download a fully-functional trial from the web site. The price for the "unlocked" version is quite reasonalbe, about $20 US. A better bargain if your grandfather also has AppleWorks 5 spreadsheets would be the icWord/icExcel bundle for about $30.
MacLink Plus by DataViz is more expensive, but does have more translators. Even so, I don't think even it has translators for AppleWorks database or drawn documents.
It is too bad that Pages can't open AppleWorks 5 WP files, but, considering that AppleWorks 6 has been around since March, 2000, I imagine it was decided (wrongly, of course), that everyone using AppleWorks 5 had moved to AppleWorks 6.

Hi DG.
The easiest way to copy an HP Photo Creations project to another computer is to click the Share button. That will upload the project to the Web and give you a link you can paste into an email. Clicking the link on the other computer allows you to download the project and personalize it. This quick video shows the process. (The screen looks slightly different now, but the concept is the same.)
Another way to share a project is copy the project folder to a thumb drive. Look in Documents/HP Photo Creations/My Things to find your saved projects.

How can I copy text from pdf file to Pages or Word?

I recently changed to Lion. When I try to copy pdf text from either Preview or Adobe reader into either Pages or Microsoft Word I get all undecipherable characters. This did not happen in previous OSX versions. Is there a fix?

I have found that some pdf's are "protected" so that it is not possible to copy text. Does this happen to all your pdfs, or just some?

Taking regular text from a saved web page through java.

Hello, currently I'm trying to save the source code from a regular HTML web page as a string. Which in fairness is pretty simple through the URL and InputStreamReader classes.
But my problem is I'm not fully sure how to save the source code when the page is saved on your hard drive, as the (i think) URL class tries to look for a non-existant host.
I think I need to use the HTMLEditor class but my knowledge of this is vague at best.
Any ideas?
Also I''m just trying to take out the regular text from the page (ie. what you see on the screen) and store that, is there any way specifically I should go about this? As I doubt it's going through the entire string and looking for specific tags to remove.

Oh, I'm with you 100%. Ipad is a nice 'accessory' to a PC or Mac. No replacement, by far.
I didn't share this, but I think it was in a frame or apart of a link. The ipad wanted to follow the link. At the other page was the same info. Still, I could not select it.
The ipad2 has dual processors. Do you think that could make a difference?
I was advised once to re-boot my cell-phone often. To clear it's memory. Does the Ipad need this as well?
I can select all day long while in this text edit box. But if I wanted to quote you by copy/paste, I cannot. Interesting. And it is right above and on the same page I am working on.
Definitely an area for improvement.

If you are on a Windows machine there is a .NET assembly that will convert text to speech. It is System.Speech

Converting database from appleworks

Hello
I have been finding that appleworks no longer seems to function, so I have gradually been transfering my wordprocessing and spreadsheet documents to iWork. I now need to convert my appleworks database to another format, because, as I mentioned, Applework does not seem to function properly any more.
I know almost nothing about computers, but I cant get my head round the fact that neither do the people who produce software
what I am referring to is the childishly ludicrous situation whereby Apple have created iWork without a database application. - surely it could and should have been foreseen that this would eventually get Appleworks users into a very difficult situation i.e. they would have built databases which could not be readily converted to another format.
Perhaps I'm missing something, but wasn't it a bit daft for iWork to have wordprocessing and spreadsheet apps but no database?

You cannot open an Appleworks database in anything else (and I agree about iWork). You can export a database as tab or comma delimited text (of course you lose all formatting and any calculation fields) but obviously you need to use AW to do that.
However it should work perfectly well on Tiger or Leopard. There are steps you can take to get it to work; please see the second post in this thread:

Flowing text from two column master pages

I'm trying to create a document with a two column master page using two separate text boxes rather than a text box with 2 columns. When I flow the text into page 1 of the document it autoflows and creates the rest of the pages automatically but uses a page wide single column rather than the 2 columns I have on my master page. How can I make it create the new pages with the two columns on them? This is CS4.

I need to know EXACTLY what you've set up and how you are flowing the text before I can tell you what's going wrong.
Do you have a master text frame or frames? Did you override the master frame before placing the text? Are there column guides on the master page? Some screen captures might help, too. You can embed them in a post by clciking on the camera icon on the web page:

Convert Text from Text Field

For compatability purposes with other forms, I have a text field that numeric data is entered into. I would however like to perform a calculation off of this field, so would therefore like to convert the number entered into this field into a numeric value rather than a text value. Can anyone explain to me how this is done?

Depending on the type of number you want you would use parseInt or parseFloat in Javascript. So when addressing your field in the calculation (assuming it is called TextField1)
var myResult = parseFloat(TextField1.rawValue) + 123.45

Hello. I have scanned 3 pages and saved to pdf, now in Microsoft Document Imaging I can only select text from the first page and cannot select text from the other 2 pages. Is there a way to select multiple pages?

Converted text on my blog is not converting?

Hello all. Im new to pdf conversions. I am wantig to make a series of pdf docs based on the info in my blog for fellow colleagues. When I convert text from my blog to pdf do I get a blue box around the links? I am using windows xp and have adobe reader x. I dont want to update my package just to deal with this problem. Can I adjust a setting to remove the lue box from links when I convert to pdf?

What is the Word file? From a PC?
What version of Word and what is the file extension?
What is it about the text that is different?
When you say fond do you mean font/typeface? If so what font, and is it on your Mac? Is there something special/different about this font?

The iPad and related software is designed to sync with only one computer. I suggest transferring the photos from one of your iMacs to the other so that all photos are on one Mac. Same for all other files you want to sync over.
To get those AppleWorks files to the iPad you'll have to determine if Pages will open them. If it will then use the file sharing feature of iTunes to copy them to Pages on your pad.
If Pages will not open the AppleWorks files directly you'll have to save them in some format that Pages will read. These include but may not be limited to Pages and Word formats.

Issue: Using the ‘Adobe PDF toolbar’ from within Internet Explorer

Can’t convert selected areas of a web page to PDF
When you click ‘select’ on the adobe pdf toolbar, a red dotted line is supposed to appear around parts of the web page as you move the cursor
In my case, that’s not happening
Similarly, when you click on a part of the page, the part is supposed to be highlighted in blue
In my case, that’s not happening

You’re supposed to use the cursor to select text and images on a page, then right-click and convert them to a PDF

You can not do that using Adobe Acrobat 9. Adobe never made a create PDF add-on for Firefox for use with Adobe Acrobat 9. They created a Firefox add-on for use with Acrobat X, but currently that one does not work with Firefox 4 though Adobe are working on an update.
