Convert to DVI

Hello to all, I would be grateful for any advise on my 17" Monitor. I originally purchased two Apple 17" displays 3 months apart and have been using them on my G5 2.0 with a ATI 9600 Pro 64 meg video card, (1 DVI and I ADC port), with no problems. I purchased the Apple DVI to ADC converter to use for duel display. Again all was fine.
I have now up graded both Monitors for the G5 to LG 22" DVI-1 connectors, and wish to use the 17" Monitors on either my PC with a ATI Wonder Card (DVi VGA) or with the Apple DVI converter to my MacBook Pro.
Currently only only one will convert to DVI. The other displays as best described as one looks at the screen as Negative! just like a Negative Photo film.
The interesting thing when I connect this Monitor directly to the G5 ATI ADC port (no conversion) it's FINE!
If I try to use the DVI port (convert it) it displays the Negative view look! I am baffled but obversely something has failed which seems to point to the Monitor.
Any feed back or advise would be more then well revived. Cheers DH

Need to convert mini dvi to s video to run a school's Hatiachi ceiling mount projector. What is the proper adapter?

Check the projector and see what kind of input is has, most have a VGA connector, so you would need a male to male VGA. You will also need the Mac mini dvi to male VGA (of course).
Some of the older projetors have a component in only, which is the red, yellow, green, RCA connectors, which are avaialable. (Usually the are fairy short, 5 ft or so,  so you would need to get a VGA with yhe mini DVI to VGA, and a component (the one with the 3 RCA's) you will probaly have to get a Female to Female VGA adapter to connect te VGA to the component.
And finaally if that weren't enough, the really old projectors have only a composite input. All I can say about that is "the hunt is on"
    Best of luck

  • DVI scan converter to DVI HD-TV?

I have a DVI based HD-TV that only has 1080i/480p and is 30". My problem when I hook it up via DVI directly to my Mac, is that there is always both a horizontal and vertical overscan. What's the cheapest scan converter that offers pixel by pixel adjustments on both vertical and horizontal that I can get the maximum resolution on my HD-TV? I have a 1.5 Ghz Powerbook G4 (the one released before the sudden motion sensor hard drives).
By the way I've tried Display Config X and SwitchResX, and neither seems to work too well for me.

The cost of present scan converters is too much to even consider it. Also in another thread I was told that the picture would be significantly distorted on my CRT.

  • VGA vs Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter

I'm about to buy an external monitor to use with my MacBook Pro late 2008. I do understand HDMI (digital) looks much better than VGA (analog), so I'm thinking about buying a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter. My questions are:
Does the Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter decrease video quality? Is it noticeable?
Is it worth buying the adapter? If so, are there any known issues with third-party adapters?
Thanks in advance for your time!
    João

If your macbook has mini-DVI then HDMI or no HDMI you will not get any audio passed through the HDMI connection because DVI does not pass audio.  You would need to pass the audio separately via analog stereo line out.
But what difference does it make anyhow?  You intend to use this as a monitor as opposed to hooking it up to a HDTV.
So long as you use a digitial interface HDMI, DVI, mini-displayport, etc. you are not going to loose any quality.  It's digital.  It either works or it doesn't.  VGA, being analog, will of course be less quality.
I don't even know why you care about converting to HDMI when you could just convert mini-DVI to standard DVI and use a monitor that accepts standard DVI.  They're plenty of those around.
Another consideration with a DVI interface is that if the monitor has a resolution greater than 1920 x 1200 you need a dual link DVI adapter as opposed to a single link DVI adapter.

  • '09 mini not compatible with mini-DVi to video adapter?

I hooked up my new '09 mini to my AV receiver via Apple's mini-DVI to video adapter but got no picture. My previous mini ('06 model) worked fine w/ the DVI to video adapter. I'm thinking the mini-DVI port on the new mini doesn't pass analog signals anymore, i.e., it's now DVI-D vs previously being DVI-I.
Anyone else have this experience w/ the '09 models? I know it works with the older models. I'm just trying to figure out if I have a defective adapter or if the '09 mini's DVI just doesn't pass analog. I noticed the supplied mini-DVI to DVI cable is DVI-D, so maybe that is a hint.

I doubt that'd work. Usually these adapters work by connecting "legacy" wires on the newer connectors to an older interface. The mac actually produces all the appropriate signals, and the adapter just hooks the wires together appropriately.
It sounds like the only analog signals the mac is producing are Red-Green-Blue signals, like you'd use for VGA or component video. It's not producing a composite video signal. So if you convert mini-DVI to VGA, the composite line is going to be dead on both.
The only kind of adapter that could help you would be one with some amount of circuitry that actually pastes the Red-Green-Blue signal into a composite signal. Something like:

  • Cinema Display to a MacBookPro. DVI versus Mini-Port.

Hello, Wanting to hook up a Cinema Display to a MacBookPro Intel Duo with the DVI port (not Mini-Port. Not Thunderbolt).
Is there an adapter that converts the DVI config to work with a Cinema Display with a Mini-Port connector or do I need the version of Cinema Display that has the DVI connector?
    Thanks!

First, HDMI is not limited to any one resolution and as of HDMI 1.3 has an capability of 2560×1600 which I think is higher than the 27" display.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI
Oh, and obiously, the LED Display can go to lower resoltution.
    Supported resolutions: 2560 by 1440 pixels, 1920 by 1080 pixels, 1280 by 720 pixels
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP597
And under System preferences, it looks like it will go from 800x600 to 2560x1440.

  • Any noticable signal loss with the DVI-to-video adapter?

Hi, there. Would any of you happen to know whether there's an appreciable signal loss when converting from DVI to, say, composite video via the DVI-to-video adapter? I'd like to hook my MBP up to an HDTV (when I eventually get one), and I'm wondering if going through the adapter would produce a degraded picture for DVDs, compared to a direct digital connection from a DVD player to the TV.
Actually, I'm wondering the same thing about the audio connection. Any loss in audio quality when using an adapter to connect the MBP's mini-jack to an HDTV or receiver?
    Thanks much.

    ragamoffyn,
While there's no "signal loss," as such, there is a considerable loss in signal quality. However, you're over-thinking this...
HDTVs accept HDMI connections, and your Macbook Pro has a DVI output. The ports are dissimilar, but digital video signal is the same. In other words, you would simply use a DVI-to-HDMI cable. In fact, many HD cable boxes (mine included) still have a DVI port, not an HDMI port. There is no loss of signal or quality.
Really, the only difference between DVI and HDMI is the fact that HDMI transmits both video and digital audio. DVI doesn't do this, so you must resort to transmitting audio separately. Not a problem: use an optical digital cable, which your Macbook Pro will accept (as will most HDTVs). That said, you might be better off connecting the audio portion of your MBP's output to a home entertainment (surround sound??) receiver.
Now, I'm not sure about the "progressive scan" capabilities of the Macbook Pro and DVD Player. You'll have to research that yourself. I can tell you that normal DVDs can be "upconverted" by a progressive scan set-top DVD player, and the result looks absolutely stunning on an HDTV. It's not quite as good as full HD, but it comes pretty close. Also, many newer units are being made with HDMI ports. In other words, the DVD is upconverted, and the result is transmitted over a full HD connection. Best of all, these set-top boxes can be had for under $100.
BTW, the composite video you suggest is simply "standard definition," and not the best SD at that (S-Video is better). Component video (where there are three separate "RCA"-type connectors) is much, much better, but even that doesn't match digital (DVI or HDMI). Also, the DVI-to-HDMI cable you will need can be had at Walmart for around $30. They can also be found at places like Best Buy or CompUSA, but these retailers tend to over-charge for over-blown items (No one needs a "Monster" HDMI cable that costs over $100, and which does no more than the $30 cable from Walmart; digital is digital).

  • G5 to mini dvi

Just purchased a 27" apple cinema display for an older G5.  Was told I also needed "Dr Bott Digital Video Link" adapter to convert mini dvi to the standard dvi...  will not work... anyone have any luck with similar issue?

Are you talking a G5 tower, or a G5 iMac?  The G5 towers used standard DVI, and sometimes dual-link DVI, but never mini-DVI.  As for the 27" Cinema Display, are you talking the one just released with Thunderbolt technology?

  • Mac Mini: DVI+TOSlink- HDMI Adapter, still fiction?

    Hello
I've been studying for a while the best solution for connecting my early 2009 Mac Mini to my LCD TV and Blu-Ray 5.1 System. I didn't took long to figure out the "Mini-DVI->HDMI Adaptor for video" and "Mini-TOS->TOSlink for audio" scenario. The problem is that I'm short on optical inputs. After thinking it through for a while, it dawned upon me that a "DVI+TOSlink->HDMI" adapter would crack this one. This adapter would take the DVI video and the TOSlink audio signals from the Mac Mini and composite them into one single HDMI stream. It seemed far fetched that such an adapter would even exist, but I decided to give it a go.
At first, after some initial research, I only found adapters like the following:
    http://www.amazon.com/Audio-SPDIF-Toslink-Converter-Adapter/dp/B0015YYOQQ/ref=sr11?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1258995241&sr=8-1
    http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Toslink-HDMI-Converter-Adapter/dp/B002N8PVTM/ref=sr14?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1258995241&sr=8-4.
Although they do convert the DVI signal to HDMI, the same can't be said in regard to the TOSlink audio signal. The audio part is not encoded into the HDMI stream, getting out through the same optical port it got in.
I was about to let it go when I found this adapter:
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=101&cp_id=10114&cs_id=1011405&pid=5369&seq=1&format=4#feedback
The are a few customer reviews that specifically state it works flawlessly with the Mac Mini.
The questions are: has anyone tried one of these? Does it really works? It it really possible to composite an HDMI stream from DVI+TOSlink inputs? If so, will it be any quality loss associated to the conversion process?
    Thanks in advance

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
There is not really much converting going on with regard to DVI (D) to HDMI. I use the mini-DVI to DVI (D) adapter that came with my Mac mini and a Belkin cable that is DVI (D) on one end and HDMI on the other. The signals are compatible. But as you say I run a separate audio cable from the mini to my HDTV. That is the real conversion that is taking place in the "black box" devices to which you are linking; adding the audio to the video.
There is another route that skips the video output from the mini altogether, but it is a bit more pricey, USB. I know of two USB to HDMI "black boxes" that give you both audio and video in the HDMI stream.

  • Macbook to TV via DVI-HDMI cable - video delay

    Hello All,
I have my Macbook, on occasion, attached to my Samsung LCD via Apple's mini DVI to DVI adapter, plugged into a DVI to HDMI cable, which is attached to my TV. The audio is routed from the headphone jack on the Macbook to the associated Audio input on the TV.
Problem I'm having, is that the video seems delayed to the TV, by a matter of milliseconds. I've verified this by putting the Macbook in mirror mode, and I can visually see the changes in picture on the Macbook a few milliseconds before the TV displays them. Since the audio is perfect and real time, I'm looking at video on the TV that's out of sync with the audio, albeit by a few milliseconds.
I don't think the picture problem can be solved - it's most likely just the nature of the technology, as the signal can pass much faster to the internal display than an external, and the TV in general might be causing the delay as well. I've tried video game mode, and setting the TV as the primary display, and it does not help.
So now, what I'm looking for, is an application that I can launch when I want to use this setup that will delay the audio out of the headphone jack. If I can delay the audio at the same rate as the picture, than I'm all set.
Does anyone know of a program that can do this? Ideally, I'd love to have this program run when FrontRow is enabled.
Thanks for any help you can provide!

Good luck on finding a program that will delay the audio. Perhaps running the audio through an amp and then to your monitor would "slow" it down a trifle. Maybe the video "slows" down converting from DVI to HDMI?
Seems like a lot of trouble for a little gain.

  • DVI HDMI Poor picture quality, grainy / combing

    Hi Guys,
Have just purchased a 26" Samsung LCD and have it connected to my G5 via a DVI-HDMI cable. However, full-screen playback on the monitor from FCP looks really poor- very grainy, with lots of combing (Note: the LCD autodetected a 50hz/1920x1080 interlace setting).
I know FCP has this setup as a CINEMA DISPLAY PREVIEW so its not really full-quality, but even still- it looks worse than when i was using a tv attached via S-Video!
Would anyone be kind enough to share what i might try to address the problem? i have already tried the obvious altering resolutions etc- but to no avail...it has me confused!
    Many thanks,
    Adam

I know FCP has this setup as a CINEMA DISPLAY PREVIEW so its not really full-quality
Yup...that's it. It isn't full quality, it is a lower resolution to ensure that no skipping of footage occurs (dropped frames).
even still- it looks worse than when i was using a tv attached via S-Video!
That was via firewire to a DV device, correct? Because that IS a proper FULL RES signal, so yes, it will look better. DVI out means that it is sending a COMPUTER signal, not a VIDEO signal...so the quality is worse.
Would anyone be kind enough to share what i might try to address the problem?
Yup...get a capture card. With a G5 your options are limited. NO Decklink Intensity with HDMI out...no Matrox MXO with HDMI out. The MXO will do DVI to a computer monitor and clean up the signal, but you can't convert that DVI to HDMI I don't think...messes up the signal. BUT, you could use the MXO and go COMPONENT to that monitor. That would be a good signal. Otherwise you are looking at Decklink HD cards or Kona LH...the Decklink might be comparable in price to the MXO.

  • DVI to Component Video Output YpBr- Mac Pro NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT Card

    Hello-
I am trying to use my Mac Pro as a media machine, but to do this I need to convert the DVI signal to Component video. The video switch I am using is Component only, so that is the reason why I cannot go HDMI.
What is the best solution? Do they make an adapter that will convert? Is there a graphics card issue?
On a sidenote, will the computer be able to operate with two video cards? I was thinking of having one HDMI output to my main television monitor, and having component video going to my switch for the other monitors located around the house.

What about upgrading to this video card?

It will give more graphics performance, but you don't need it for just displaying video. If you do want extra performance, get the ATI Radeon HD 4870

  • DVI to VGA Adapter For 2nd Monitor

    Hello,
I have a DELL monitor with a male DVI cable.  I want to convert to VGA so I can use it as a second monitor.  I currently have an Apple female VGA to Thunderbolt adapter.  What do I need to convert this DVI male to a VGA female?  Or...., do they make a DVI to Thunderbolt adapter?
    Thanks Much,
    Rick

The Thunderbolt Port on your iMac uses Mini DisplayPort adapters for HDMI, DVI and VGA monitors.
For DVI monitor's that are 24" or smaller with a resolution of 1920x1200 or less, you need a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB570Z/B/mini-displayport-to-dvi-adapter?fnode =53
For DVI monitor's that are 27" or larger with higher resolutions, you need a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter.

I plan on getting a new MBP soon, and noticed it doesn't have a SVHS port on the right side like my older Powerbook G4. Is there a converter for DVI to a standard (yellow RCA) video output. I work in a school where the only thing I can output to is a TV via its standard video port.

You were asking about the whole connection audio in all. So the previous reply will work for the video standpoint but then to get audio you will need to go to guitar center or radio shack and pick up a minijack to RCA and you just plug that into the output of your MBP. http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/buyhosa_stereo_ycable_mini_maletwo_rca_males?fullsku=333055%2e105
