Convert to PDF - Word Styles - Hidden Text

I have a Word 2003 document with a table of contents (TOC) which is the user guide for my software application.  Using Acrobat Pro 8 I would like to create a PDF which has bookmarks at the same pages as the TOC entries.  The only appropriate choice for the conversion is to use Word styles, as there aren't any headings or bookmarks in the Word document.  I do not need any additional text in the document, so my intent was to attach styles to the TC fields in the Word document.  It appears that the converter only sees styles attached to standard, visible text in the document.  Attaching styles to the TC fields, hidden text, or the the header text for a section yields noPDF bookmarks.  Letting Acrobat look for the TOC styles points all of the bookmarks to the TOC where a user would have to click again to go to the content.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for your reply.
I have been through the conversion settings and created some test documents that were much smaller than my user guide.
What I have found is that if I assign a style to this: Starting the program¶
It will get picked up as a bookmark, unless the text is formatted as hidden.
If I assign a style to this: {·TC·"Starting the program"·}¶
It will not get picked up as a bookmark.
It doesn't work if I duplicate the text and they are part of the same paragraph with the style is applied to the text outside of the field braces:
{·TC·"Starting the program"·}Starting the program¶
The example above will work if the entire paragraph is formatted with the style.
It would seem that the best solution would be for the converter to recognize the TC fields and their level switches as bookmark sources.

  • How can I import a .doc (MS Word) with "hidden text" to a new Pages document?

Without changing the specific text in .doc to non-hidden, nothing but empty line returns comes across.
I have several .doc files and I am trying to streamline a process.

There is no hidden text in Pages and if Apple implemented it chances are it would not be the same as Microsoft's.
There quite a few variations between Pages and MsWord so transferring documents between them is a hit and miss at the best of times.

On the Mac there is not Reader Uninstaller.
For a simple uninstall You simply drag the application to the trash and empty it.
For a complete removal it takes a bit of doing.

  • When converting word doc to pdf, my images with text only show the background color of the text box.

I have a word doc that I am trying to conver to pdf.  I have jpegs with text boxes on top of them on one page.  It looks great on the screen but after I convert to pdf, the text boxes only have half the text, the first half of the text box is just white - the background color.  If I take the background color out of the text box, the text converts over fine but I need the background color.
I have tried many things here on the print settings, standard, high quality print, unchecking the compression on the images.  Any help?

    Hi Janedance1,
If the PDF that you converted already has searchable text, please try disabling OCR as described in this document: How to disable Optical Character Recognition (OCR) when converting PDF to Word or Excel. (If the PDF was created from a scanned document and doesn't already have searchable text, disabling OCR isn't a great option, as the text won't be searchable/editable in the converted Word doc.)
Please let us know how it goes.

    Hi Sara!
Yes this sounds interesting. Can I update to that from the PDF Export I have just renewed? How much would that cost?
    Thanks for your quick answer.

  • Layered text and graphic in Word won't display when converted to PDF

I have several simple shapes with text layered in front in my Word document. After they are converted to PDF using Acrobat XI, only the shape will display. I can tell the text is still there, because I can use my cursor tool to select it, but it won't display visually. It looks like it isn't there but it really is. One bit of text is even an internal link, and the link still works but I can't see the text I'm clicking on.
If anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate it.
    Thank you,

Hi Lori - this was perfect! It was an issue with the layers being misordered. I used the Edit Text & Images tool listed under Tools > Content Editing, found the layers, then by right-clicking I was able to bring the text to the front and it all looks great now.
I would like to know why this happened, or if not why, how I could make sure it doesn't happen again. If there's a check box or other setting I could use to remove this problem that would be fantastic.
Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction!

  • When trying to convert a pdf file into a word doc, i only get the graphics but not the text. How do i remedy this?

When trying to convert a pdf file into a word doc I only get graphics but no text. What to do?

    Hey hamsa142,
I think you are converting a scanned PDF to word.
You might need to run OCR first to make the text recognizable and then convert it to word.
