Convert USB drive to USB 2.0

Hi, I'm interested in purchasing an a new iPod but the new generation (I don't know which generation they changed it) doesn't use firewire to transfer - only USB 2.0 - so I'm lead to believe. Now as we know the iBook G3 600 MHz 12" (duel USB) doesn't have USB2 and although I could use USB this would be very slow and frustrating. Does anyone/has anyone converted the USB on the iBook G3 to USB2.0 - and how expensive? Sorry if this seems a dumb question but my computer knowledge only extends so far!
Cheers
iChaplain (Australia)

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Yes, USB is slower, but it's doable, and not as slow as you would think. I've not used an iPod, but I have used a USB card reader with my iBook G3 800 MHz to transfer photos from my digital camera, and the speed is perfectly acceptable.
Upgrading the USB ports is not possible, since they are part of the logic board. The only way to upgrade to USB 2.0 is to sell your iBook and replace it with an iBook G4 (or MacBook).

  • Convert USB 3.0 to FireWire

I use a MacBook Pro 2009 and has USB 2.0 and FireWire and no USB 3.0 interfaces. I have just pruchased new external hard-drive with usb 3.0. I want try harness some of that USB 3.0 speed on the go and not be limited by USB 2.0 alll the time.
Hence my question; Is there any way to convert USB 3.0 to FireWire?

I don't think an adapter like that exists. It would have a very limited market, since anyone concerned with speed would just go with a Firewire 800 interface. Plus, the Firewire technology is mostly in decline now. As John suggested, you'd be better off with a new drive if you really need the speed.
While Firewire is faster than USB 2.0, it's not a screaming fast difference even with a native Firewire interface. A converter would have to slow things down due to conversion. I think you'd be lucky to end up back at USB 2.0.

  • Convert hard drive to Vmware vm

It's do able. You'll need a PC to capture the image on that dead pc harddrive, then deploy the image on the ESXi server. With the image still OFF, then you use standalone converter on a pc to convert the image to a bootable ESXi guest pc.

I have a pc that died on me. The pc has an application that I need to run. I am in the process of setting up an esxi server and Im wondering if i can convert the windows 7 OS on the hard drive from the dead pc to a vm on the esxi server without booting up the os?
for example, can I just plug the hard drive into another PC with a sata to usb converter and convert the drive to a vm that way?

I am having similar problems. After years of successful use, about a year ago, my printer (Epson stylus Photo R300) stopped working. After much investigation, it appears my computer no longer recognizes my printer. I've followed resets, safe boots, uninstalls, reinstalls, etc. This happened so long ago, I don't recall what I was doing when it happened. I'm figuring it happened shortly after a Software Update... So far none of the fixes recommended to me have solved the problem. I've been using Epson customer support, but they've stopped responding. None of their suggestions have seemed to work either.

  • How to convert a driver write in C to LabVIEW?

Hello, i have a problem with an Instrument: i have the driver write in C but don´t was made in LabWindows/CVI and i have that convert it to a driver in Labview. How i to convert the driver in C to a driver in Labview???

There is no method to automatically convert a C program into a LabVIEW. Looking at the code, it seems that the program is writing to the instrument over the parallel port. You can do the same thing in LabVIEW with the Outport function or use a VISA Write. There is a turorial on using the parallel port here.
And please, refrain from the duplicate posts. You should have replied to your original posting instead of asking the same question again twice.

  • Writing USB-Serial Converter Device Driver for Windows CE 6.0

    Dear Developers,
I have a Silicon Labs chip Cp2108. Its a Quad USB to Serial converter. It supports all the operating systems except Win CE. So I have the source code of the driver for Linux 2.6 / Linux 3.0. I have experience in Device drivers development
    in Linux.
Question is How will I start coding driver for Windows CE 6.0. Can anyone point me to a best starting point on this topic. All I need to do is make this chip work with WIN CE 6.0. Can anyone point me to a Sample driver source code It will be great.
     Regards,
         Winston

    Dear Vinoth,
            Thanks for the valuable reply.
I am confused a bit here. I need to make the external USB -UART bridge (CP2108) work on win CE 7.
the driver in Path \WINCE600\PUBLIC\COMMON\OAK\DRIVERS\USB\CLASS\USBSER is using the built in USB controller
hardware and making it as a Serial port right ?
How do you go about making the external USB -UART bridge work as a COM port ?
I have a document from SIlicon Labs which gives info about Device descriptors and interface commands .

  • Convert hard drive from usb 2.0 to 3.0?

I have a Toshiba external hard drive with usb 2.0. Is there a way to upgrade it to usb 3.0 with a software or firmware update? Or do I need to buy a new hard drive that says it is 3.0?

USB3.0 uses a physically different cable, and interface board. To answer your question, No. Your best bet is to buy another complete external hard drive, or dismantle yours and put it in something like a Vantec Nexstar USB3.0 enclosure.

  • Convert USB 3.0 to USB 2.0?  Why?

Sounds useless, since most USB 3.0 devices are backward compatible.  But apparently there's enough slop in the spec so that at least my 3.0 HD won't work with my Netgear WNDR4000 N700 router's USB 2.0 port, and I can't mount it as a network drive on my Macbook Pro Retina.  You'd expect that the compatibility is achieved by some part of the doohickies ignoring the 3.0 connections and shuffling control signals to their 2.0 counterparts.  In any case, the Netgear's not smart enough to do that or something.
Ideally, what I'd like is to have my USB 3.0 HDD plugged into the router so I could do wireless Time Machine backups like a Timecapsule, but take that portable 3.0 HDD along with me and do wired backups and restorals with the speedy 3.0 interface on the road or when I had to do a full restoral.  I've tried to fake out the thing by putting a powered USB hub in line, but there's apparently something the Netgear is looking for that the 3.0 HDD doesn't send to allow me to mount that drive wirelessly through the Netgear.
Is there a "smarter" hub that might make the Netgear happy with my portable HD?  Or a USB 3.0 to Ethernet converter or someting?  I don't expect to find a router with a USB 3.0 interface, considering that extra speed would be wasted going through the wireless interface.
How can I get a drive to be a 2.0 to use it wirelessly via the Netgear, yet 3.0 when I wanted to use it wired directly to my Macbook?
    Any ideas?
    TIA!
    Mark

USB3 is totally independent of USB2.  The USB3 host sockets provide both USB3 pins and USB2 pins. USB2 also provides compatibility with USB1. When USB2 and USB3 connections are mated only the USB2 pins connect. When you use a USB3 extension or hub, the USB2 and USB3 signals are routed/buffered/split independently.
A USB2 device can thus be plugged into either a USB2 or USB3 host socket with no problem.
A USB2 compatible USB3 device ditto, but if only USB3 is implement the USB2 can't host.
However, I believe USB3 devices are meant to provide that USB2 backward compatibility.
There is a market/standards hole at the moment for actual conversion between USB2 and USB3, either way.
I haven't been able to find any device that does this - the so called converters just route USB2 signals as needed.
I would like a USB3 to USB2 hub or extension that IGNORED the USB2 host interface and uprated USB2 devices to USB3 signalling - this is dead easy and allows (say) 8 USB cameras or memory sticks to get full high speed USB2 bandwidth from one USB3 controller.  But for your inverse problem, there would need to be some more complexity, negotiating the lower bandwidth available and/or buffering and/or handshaking for flow control.
Note USB3 is full duplex, so you have the bandwidth in both directions (so the 8 USB2 cameras could store data back on USB3 disks), whereas USB2 is half duplex (one way).

  • Converting USB Camera to IP Camera

Hello, I am looking for software to convert a usb camera to a IP Camera. I have generic USB CCTV Cameras I want to utilize for access from the web. I have purchased EVOcam4 however that has not solved my problem. I have tried using a usb print server, but that also didnt work.
What I invision working the best would software that takes the usb feed and converts it to an ip based feed // if that is even possible. I have seen programs claiming to do such on windows based platforms, however that is not an option.
    Thank you for any insigth!

  • Convert flash drive for Windows 8.1 bootcamp installation from mbr to gpt

Trying to run Windows 8.1 pro x64 on my mid 2010 15" macbook pro. Get stuck during bootcamp installation in Windows because my partition table isn't compatible (MBR but needs to be GPT). My hard drive seems to be Logical partitions/volume etc, while my flash drive was formatted into MBR seemingly by bootcamp, or otherwise not altered into the GPT like it maybe should have.
    Generally followed this guide http://www.howtogeek.com/186907/how-to-install-windows-on-a-mac-with-boot-camp/
    Steps I took:
Had to use terminal/Xcode to edit info.plist from bootcamp to allow flash drive installation through bootcamp on my mac (removed the "pre" method).
With all three bootcamp options selected, managed to partition the drive
When restarted, my computer had black screen with "no bootable device found".
    Restarted again, holding alt/option
Flash drive was now available as one of two options (the other being my standard mac drive)
Windows Setup loaded. Selected language/imputed key/select version etc.
Here is the strange part, the division of the disk does not include "bootcamp" anywhere in the title (like it should according to the guide), and is about 10gb smaller than my partition (assume this is a normal result of windows installation/os files etc). When I try to format the partition, it says I can't, and explains that I can't use MBR, need to use GPT.
Attempted to rewrite disk with Shift F10 Diskpart, list disk, etc, but here it shows drive 0, 1, and 2, (rather than drive 0 partition 1,2,3,4, with 4 being my bootcamp I think). This seems to be a method for installing windows on a windows pc, and I didn't go through with it because I didn't want to loose my mac os yet.
I am not proficient with coding/terminal use, and don't know if there is an option to list partitions etc, so I'm stuck. I can backup my mac and potentially change my partition table etc, but I feel like restoring with time machine would then wipe my existing partition. Is there a workaround I could use? Is there a specific sequence of backups/restores that would work? I'm also okay with manually drag and dropping the files I want back onto a clean slate computer if necessary. Or would simply buying and burning a disc with windows save myself the hassle? Please advise.
Sorry for long question, wanted to get info out right away. Can include more if necessary. Thank you all for your time.

    TheMonark wrote:
I input that into mac terminal while running os? And then you'd like me to post the results on this discussion board?
Yes. It also helps if there are any calculations to be done with disk sectors.
My optical drive works fine, but I moved to France and didn't bring any disks. Would it be easier and safer to just burn my windows iso onto a disc and run it through bootcamp that way? I'm thinking the answer is yes at this point.
Yes, if you have a built-in Optical drive, Bootcamp expects to boot from the Optical drive, because it sets the CSM-BIOS layer for Windows to boot from the Optical drive settings in the NVRAM.
I'm about to head out to celebrate a birthday, but I will post back here in about 14 hours.
    Enjoy the party!
Do you recommend just buying a DVD and doing it that way? I could easily return my info.plist to normal, and as far as I know, my optical drive works fine. Seems simpler if it would work with my copies of osx and windows. What do you recommend?
The changes in info.plist enable creation of the USB, but do not influence the boot device pointer that BCA will set when switching to the Windows Installer. My recommendation is to get DVD writable media (DVD+R or equivalent) and burn the ISO to a physical DVD and use BCA to install windows using the BCA USB and DVD media.

  • Help converting a driver to version 6.1

The instrument driver network has a Keithley 220 driver for LabVIEW 7.0/8.0 but I have version 6.1. I attached the driver to this message. Is it possible to convert it so it will work with version 6.1? Thanks for any help.
I could use a driver for the Keithley 181 too, but I only found a LabWindows/CVI driver for it, so I assume that it can't easily be converted to LabVIEW and I didn't attach it. If I'm wrong about that though, let me know.

  • Adobe PDF converter printer driver not installed: No longer working.

I recently uninstalled and reinstalled my Epson printer and now my PDF converter isn't working.
I'm using Win XP and Adobe CS3 Design Standard. I tried several of the suggestions here on the forums on reinstalling PDF converter driver and or switching ports, but to no avail.

    Problem Solved !!!
    Printer Name: Adobe PDF
    Port: Adobe PDF Local Port
    Advanced: Driver: Adobe PDF Converter
Spool Print  and Start printing Immediately (Uncheck Send to Printer)
Once I got the above in place I was then finally able to install as noted below:
Try adding it manually: These instructions are for Windows 7 but I don't
think Vista's install varied much, if at all.
    1) Open the Devices and Printers dialog box and select Add a Printer
    2) Add a* Local Printer* at the next dialog box asking what type of printer
    you want to install.
    3. Select* Create  A New Port* at the Choose Printer Port and select* Local
Port at* the type of port dropdown menu.
    4. Click Next, then at the prompt name the Port "Adobe PDF" or whatever you
    prefer.
    5. Click OK and at the Install Printer Driver dialogue box, click Have
Disk and browse to *C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat
10.0\Acrobat\Xtras\AdobePDF* folder and highlight the AdobePDF.inf file.
    Click Open, then OK.
    6.  When presented with a list of Adobe PDF Converter options, select the
first item from the list and click Next.
    7. Make sure the radio button is selected for Use the driver that is
    currently installed (Recommended) Click Next.
    8. The printer name dialogue box should default to Adobe PDF Converter, if
not change it to that exact name.
    9. Then click Next through remaining screens to install.
At this point, the printer should be installed.  Hopefully this helps.
