Convert WMV to MOV?

I am trying to pull stills from a WMV video.  I'm assuming that the first step is to convert the file to MOV?
1: How do I do that, what are some trusted softwares i do not want to download something that will damage my computer.
2: How do i pull those quality stills using Final Cut Pro?

flip4mac has a bunch of different options some of which will allow you to convert files to qt.

There's a free option that will allow you to play wmv's.  you might get away with just doing a screen grab (command-shift 4)
Once you've got the file in a quicktime, you can export a still in fcp file:export:  quicktime conversion:  still image.

    I have converted .wmv to .mov using the quicktime 7.6.4 save as feature and saved them to an external WD hard drive. They have been playing fine for months until yesterday, now i have a black quicktime screen, no sound or audio as the file plays, all that I have changed recently is that i have updated Flip4mac from 2.3.3.2 to 2.3.3.3 and updated Safari to version 4.1. I have run an Onyx maintenance scrypt and disc utility to try a repair a possible permissions or disc error, still no luck. I read an article on the Flip4mac site that suggested I export the file in quicktime, this has not worked. When viewing the files info it states the files codecs are windows media audio 9 standard*, windows media video 9 standard". After reading some other posts I installed Perian, but still no luck. If anyone can help to get these movie files operational again please advise.

  • How do I convert wmv to mov files for fcp?

    I have tried a couple of different conversion programs to convert a wmv file to mov or mp4, and all seem to result in a viewable mp4, but when I import into final cut and try to put the footage into my sequence, it won't render. The sound renders, but the video remains "unrendered." I'm using a Pro res 422 sequence. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix the problem?

    I am trying to convert my wmv to mov format so I can them to DVD. It worked for 2 movies, then it failed. Now all I get is an error stating "THe movie can not be opened."
    What happened? How can I get Quicktime 7.1.2 to convert my wme files to mov files? OR is there a better way to get wme files to DVD? Thanks!

    Just as a point of clarification, do you have Flip4Mac installed to do the conversion?
    The WMV Studio app from them, at $50-, works with iMovie, which should then work with iDVD...

    Those other posters are steering you in the right direction. Flip4Mac is the best thing for this, and all the paid functions will work in the free downloaded version, there's just some limitations on the length of any one clip, and a watermark on the video, but it will let you see how well it works...well worth the affordable $.

  • Convert photostory1.wmv to .mov

    A friend still creates a 5 minute photo/music slideshow using photostory1 every month. She does not want to change to any other software. I have tried most every conversion method found in this community and from other places. I have not been able to convert .wmv file to .mov file to add to final cut pro movie. I would like use a free trial program to try and then maybe pay for full version. The new mac app 'Smart Converter' will not do the conversion. Among the ones recently tried and failed are VLC, ffmpgX and easywmv and others that I can not remember. I do not need to broadcast the final combined movie on iphone/ipod/ipad or any other mobile device. I am using SnowLeopard and will download Lion next week when available.

    To my knowledge, this function has yet to be activated.
    Where would I attach the video? It is only 9.4 MB and about 5 minutes long.
    As previously stated, a 9.4 MB sample file can be be emailed as an attachment. (Check user profiles to find user email addresses if posted and available.) Otherwise, the sample clip is usually uploaded to an online server and the URL of its location is posted here.  Right-clicking (Control-Click on a Mac) then allows interested readers to download the file directly to their computer.

    I am trying to convert a .wmv file created in Movie Maker on a PC and load it in Iweb. Flip4MAc works fine for viewing on the MAC side, but PC viewers can't open the converted quicktime file.
    I'd like to convert wmv to a more universal movie format such as .mov.
    Is there a free converter that works?

    Flip4Mac has functioning import and export in trial mode as well. I prefer it over V hub....many more pro features and, IMO, better company and support, overall. The price is quite reasonable, too, but try your conversion and see how it works for you.

    I would like to convert WMV files to MPEG so they will play in QuickTime or in iTunes on a Mac by just double-clicking them... for family members with Macs like me.
    I am working on a PC where I am right now, but I have Macs at home and at work. I am on a PC for the time being at a friends place and I've produced a few .wmv files in Windows Live Movie Maker 2011. (Sorry Steve, it's just for a test).
    QuickTime will not play WMV files, nor AVI files, but it indicates that it can use a plug-in to do so, but the QuickTime webpage for plug-ins that it takes me to doesn't have any plug-ins for WMV or AVI format files.
    Of course the Windows Media Player plays the WMV and AVI files, but is there also a way to make them play in QuickTime or iTunes besides converting them?

    Hi QTKirk,
    I would like to be able to just give my family these files on a CD for high-res viewing on a computer, in addition to the DVDs that I have made for their TVs.
    Since I don't control what they install on their computers, they don't necessarily have Flip4Mac on their Macs like I do... I just want them to be able to play MPEGs from a file on a CD or on their hard drives by simply double-clicking them.
    After working with the recommended VLC player that also allegedly converts WMV files to MPEGs, for 8 hours, I have a result with the 7th attempt that mimics the worst kind of modern digital art that I've ever seen... I wish I could plug in the screenshot of the MPEG video that VLC produced... completely useless garbage.
    Are there any other suggestions for a converter that simply handles converting WMV to any kind of MPEG file?
    FFE was going to be the one that I tried until I read a post about VLC... that turned out to be a waste of 8 hours of sleepless time.

    You have two choices I know of.
    Buy Flip4Mac Player Pro for $49 or find someone who bought Flip4Mac Player Pro and will do you a favor.

    I have some discs that were burned in wmv format. I would like to convert them so that they will play in home DVD recorders. What formats play in most DVD players? What third party utility would you recommend (using MacBook Pro)?

    If any of you out there know of a wmv to mov program that works great without having to first convert to mpg which seems to make the quality of the movie horrible .. well not movie .. they are just clips .. and actually ever since my QuickTime Pro 7.6 started .. it is not image sequencing ...
