Convert .xls files in a folder to .xlsx file

Question

I am getting a file from a client with extension .xls but it can't be read in SSIS or with OPENROWSET function. I believe the file has the .xls extension but it is not excel file. I can open the file manually, I am looking for powershell script to open and
save the file as .xlsx.
I tried to use the following code but it is not working. Any help on this would be appreciated.

Hi Mohammedu,
Let’s see what format the problem file’s
format is first. You might be interested in my Remove-ComObject
function; it gets rid of Excel vestiges, you can get it here and
read about it here.
What does the following code return?
