Converted 8mm movies

My son had our entire collection of 8mm movies converted to dv and has passed them on to me for the daunting task of editing and adding commentary. Each clip contains 6 movie rolls and the files are huge. I'm importing one clip at the time and tried, unsuccessfully, to break the clips up into separate events corresponding to each movie roll. I also have imovie hd and in a few days will have Final Cut Express 4 on a new iMac.
Also, while the quality of the movies is not bad, the speed is off, jumps from normal to fast.
Any suggestions as to what would be a reasonable first approach would be appreciated.

With regard to trimming the file content, either QT Pro ($30) or MPEG Streamclip (free) can easily handle this. Just load a file, Set "in" and "out" points usint the "i" and 'O' keys, use the "Trim to Selection" Edit menu option to isolate the content you wish to save as an independent files, and save the file using the File menu "Save As..." option in either application. Repeat as many times as needed. Files are nor re-compressed, but simply save to the generic MOV file container still as DV compressed file content. If you come across content your definitely do not plan to keep or use, simply exclude it from your saved file to save time and storage space when importing/editing later.
As to speed problem, this could be more problematic. First step is to determine if this is a playback problem independent of the file or in the file itself. I.e., does it always occur at the same place in the file or is it random or only when played back in certain media players? Is it a relatively slow "jump" in speed or does it occur over one or two frames? Not an enviable task in either case but if consistent, may allow you to segment the files during editing and make fine adjustments as possible. Still, it is not a task I would want to take on under normal conditions.

  • Converting 8MM movies to DVD

We were going through some old family boxes and found some old 8mm movies. We have not found the projector yet and were wondering if our local Best Buy would be able to convert them to a DVD. Any one have any ideas?

Best Buy works with the imemories service to have them converted. http://www.imemories.com/home-movies-to-dvd/

  • Converting 8mm movie tapes to dvd

I would like to convert some old 8mm home movies to DVD but not sure what file format would work best with iMovie HD 6.I have a Pioneer DVD/VCr recorder and have tried importing one of these DVD's into iMovie but it doesn't seem to work,it looks like it imports but the resulting file cannot be opened.

Basicall, iMovie works with miniDV tapes rather than straight from DVD. What you will need to do is convert the 8mm films to mini DV tape format or have them put on a VCR tape from which you can use your VCR to pass through a miniDV camcorder into iMovie in the miniDV format. So the simple answer to your question is convert your films to the mini DV format. Not knowing what other equipment you have, it's hard to give specific recommendations, but here is what I did with some of my father's films from the 1940's:
*Sent the films to a commercial company to convert to mini DV tape format.\
*used my DV camcorder to import into iMovie and edited to my heart's content.
I also converted some old video tapes by using my camcorder as a pass through device (basicially played the tapes from my VCR to my camcorder so that it would convert to the miniDV format and deliver to my Mac.) Others have used devices made by Canopus to do the same thing.
Hope this gives you a start.

  • 8mm movie conversion

I have about 1200 feet of old 8mm movie film that I would like to have converted so that I can import it into Apple’s iMovie where I can edit it and make a movie of it and put it on a DVD with menus.
What format do I want to have it converted to ?
Which version of iMovie is the best for this ?

I think your question is sort of outside the realm of iMovie and more of how to get old film based movies recorded onto digital tape or another digital format easily imported to the computer.
Most people who report on what they did ended up displaying the movie onto a good background with the projector and simply video taping it off the screen, wall, sheet, etc.
These are old silent 8mm films?

  • Import 8mm movies directly into Elements 12

Curious to know if it is possible to directly import 8mm movies via a camcorder, through a Canopus ADVC110 analog to digital converter device, directly into Premiere Elements 12?  If so, how would that be accomplished, and what are the settings necessary for optimal quality?

Yes you can but I recommend (and always use myself) WinDV or Exsate DV Capture Live. There are no settings in PRE that affect the quality of DV import as it (and the other two tools I've mentioned) capture the complete raw video stream from the digitizer. It is the settings on the digitizer that can affect the quality of that stream and, frankly, I find the Canopus manuals so unhelpful and poorly written that I've always just gone with the defaults.

consider usage of a diff. editor.. iMovieHD6, you're entitled for a free downlaod at apple.com:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html
but IF you're relaxed, opened your mind, follow the bright light, ommmm.. for Events & Stuff:
your intended workflow will add another step of quality-degradition (8mm>>avi>>mp4>>iM08) ..
consider the free tool Mpeg Streamclip www.squared5.com for 'chopping' that 90min beast into pieces..
rename these new chunks, follow advice given on my site:

  • How can i convert 3d movie into 2d to watch it in mac

i have a movie with mkv file playable on vlc how can i convert the movie into 2d

There are now a bunch of them out there. Do a Google search for "mac 3D conversion" They tend to be around $35. I have been using iSkysoft products, which have been fairly easy to use. They have a "iMedia Converter Deluxe for Mac" that besides the 3D to 2D conversion, will also convert video to 70+ formats, has a 1-Click Video Downloader, and a single click Rip DVD and Burn to DVDs feature. Also claims to be "Ultrafast" all for the same price others apps are that only do the conversion.

  • Media encoder inserts black frame at beginning, when converting my MOV file to H264 for YouTube 720pHD

I'm using Adobe Media Encoder to convert my MOV file to H264, and selecting "YouTube 720pHD" (for Instagram) as I was instructed by someone at Adobe over the phone. But it inserts a black frame at the beginning or end. When I open the converted file on my desktop, the black frame is the first frame. After I upload to Instagram, the black frame is at the end. How can I get rid of the black frame?! Please help!

    Welcome to the furum, Forrest.
Hmmm. I don't recall hearing of that problem. There may not be many users who can offer a solution.
This workaround should work, however: Open the exported movie in QuickTime Player and remove the first frame. (I think it's only the first frame that is black, not the first second. Remove all the black, whatever it is.) Save the movie. That may cause QT Player to save it into a new movie. Use the modified movie for your Web site. QuickTime Pro is required — $30 from Apple.
Note that you've posted in the iMovie 6 forum, not the iMovie HD forum for iMovie 5. There are fewer current iMovie 5 users here. Most were iM5 users, however, so someone might remember this problem.

Haven't really used any of them including VLC - actually use netflix on the ipad more than anything. I was able to drop an mp4 into imovie on my ipad and see it there. This was something I had shot as avhcd and converted with turbo.264. Played fine. Probably not what you want for a movie player though.
Well, turbo.264 is indeed very nice to have - even for converting full-sized movies. (Nevertheless, TechRadar's latest roundup (see http://www.techradar.com/news/software/applications/6-of-the-best-video-converte rs-for-mac-1074303 ; also linked from another roundup at http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/benchmark-excellent-multimedia-converter-handb rake-vs-commercial-apps ) has shown it's still worse than HandBrake in most respects.)
All H.264 files (assuming they are H.264 level 4.1 or lower) are compatible with the built-in Videos app.

Those of you who use other players, what do you reccomend? Just curious.
It entirely depends on your needs. The top players (AVPlayerHD / ProPlayer, It's Playing, GoodPlayer) all have different strengths and weaknesses. I myself use It's Playing the most as I convert everything into MP4 and simply love the DSP's (brightness / volume / saturation boosting). (Its software decoders are definitely worse than those of AVPlayerHD / ProPlayer; however, MP4's are played back from hardware.)

  • Convert a movie from Quicktime to MPEG4 in MPEG Streamclip

I want to convert a movie from Quicktime (.mov) which I created in Final Cut Express to MPEG4 in MPEG Streamclip to be able to see it on my Samsung TV. The problem is that the uncompressed movie, comverted only from Quicktome to MPEG 4, stops almost every moment on my Samsung TV. I have connected an external harddrive in NTFS there via USB 2.0 (Samsung TV cannot play movies in HFS etc.). The uncompressed movies are bigger than 4GB in Quicktime.
    http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/201112/20111208190112921/Web_GSDVBE UA_GER.pdf
I ask here how to use MPEG streamclip (free version; I use 1.9.2) so convert my movies into MPEG 4 so that I cann watch it on my Samsung TV.
I filled out "Bildrate" "30" but this did not work. I have chosen less quality but there are still - less - interruptions and I find it laborious to test different versions of less quality so that it might work.
I ask you also because I want to create my movies to give it to other people via the internet (f.i. via rapidshare) but I need a smaller size of my movies and do not know all the different TVs my friends have. I cannot imagine that it is not possible to create a movie in MPEG 4 that cannot be seen in many TVs via an external harddrive?

I know that I can do that also in FCE. It takes much more time to convert a movie into MPEG4 than to export it as uncompressed movie in QuickTime which I can use f.i. in iDVD to burn a DVD or watch it on my MBP.
But I don't know the versions of TVs of other people if I want to send them the movie via internet f.i. via mydrive.ch etc. which have limited space if used for free. So which settings to choose for an output in MPEG4?
For my one use it is o.k. if the movie can be seen correctly in MPEG4 on my TV but I can also watch it via my MBP on my TV via HDMI.

    Hi
I need to find a video converter for .Mov to .Flv(or maybe Mp4 or mpeg).
I found out that you cant create a playlist in .mov...so i need to convert. Youtube's conversion seems to suck though...can i get a better quality .flv conversion?
I have a lot of videos +around 70+ that need to convert to a format with playlist functionality for mac and windows.
Whats a good software to convert to flv.or the other format? currently my videos are 960x540.
    Help is appreciated.

MPEG Streamclip with the Perian plug in should work.

I am attempting to convert 8mm video cassettes to dvd using a video cassette player, elgato video capture with rca/usb connections to the mac then editing in imovie and burning dvd-r using idvd. The picture quality is awful. What can I do??????

At what point is the video quality bad?  Is it bad on capture?  I would recommend using an s-video 1394 firewire converter instead.  They capture the video at a higher bit rate.  If you have a lot of 8mm tapes to capture, invest in a stand alone DVD recorder.  They capture and compress in one shot.  If you need to rip it back from the DVD into iMovie again, I would recommend using DVDxDV.

  • Can't get the Videora iPod Converter to convert the movies!

When I go to convert the movie they ask me to put the file in so i go to browse and then the movie and click Video TS and a crap load of more files come up. On other programs I have used just accept the Video TS but they were only trials.
    PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Videora is horrible buggy software that should be avoided.
If you insist on using it-I beleive you need another program to convert DVD's or files it thinks are DVD's.
On a mac-handbrake(now media fork)is all you would need. It's free and works perfectly( at least for me).
For windows-there are 2 recommended pay for programs I have heard of, DVD shrink and DVDfab(does conversion if you buy platinum version).
    Good luck.

Can anyone recommend a programme to convert a .mov file using windows 7 to iPad 2 please?

Mpegstreamclip is good software with a lot of great features but may be more than most people need.

  • I converted the movie, but no sound

I converted the movie, but no sound
the movie was converted from mpg. to m4v.
    any reason?
btw, to convert 3 minutes of video takes like 30 minutes!

I have started using HandBreak to convert my DVDs.
I am currently using the Linux command line version and wrote a script to mass convert all my DVDs and its doing a really good job and taking about 1/2-3/4 hour to convert 1 DVD.
There are windows and mac versions of the program too.
