Converted Library to DNG now what about those other files?

I've just taken the plunge and converted all my CR2 images to DNG, replacing the originals.
However, I still have all the JPEG sidecar files left over. Can I safely delete these, or are they required by the DNG?
Also, I was previously using the option to write to XMP sidecar files. With DNG is there any real need to keep doing this?
Thanks

Converting RAW files to DNG does not replace the original file. Rather it places all the data from that file inside the DNG in a standard published format. It can also contain a full copy of the file in its original format if you select that option (although this is really a waste of space). Think of DNG's as a box with a standardised filing system into which you file your data previously filed in a way only understandable by Canon, Nikon or whichever company designed the format. DNG's have a filing system that allows anyone to now read that data instead of just a few people "in the know".
The DNG files will allow you to write what was formally contained in the sidecar files directly into the headers of the DNG file. If you had  automatically write all changes into xmp selected in catalog settings, then this will continue with DNG files but now write the data into the file header rather than as a  sidecar file. If you wrote the information yourself (by selecting write metadata to file from the metadata tab), rather than doing it automatically, then you can continue to do so. If you don't select this changes are stored only in the LR catalog and not in the file itself. The advantage of writing data into the file header (or as a sidcar file) is that other applications such as Bridge can read this data and if you import the DNG into a different LR catalog you can read the changes into that catalog, by selecting read metadata from file. The disadvantages include a small performance hit particularly on less powerful systems, you can still write the data to file manually in this case.
As far as jpg files go, if these have been imported as separate files and you still want to keep them as separate files then don't delete them. To ensure any changes you make in LR are written into the header files then select this option for jpgs, Tiffs and PSD files in catalog settings on the same screen as where you set the options for xmp data for RAW files.
Jpg files are not required by DNG's that contain a RAW file. A jpg preview file is embedded inside the RAW file and this will be also in the DNG file and used by applications not capable of decoding RAW data.

The fact that Apple now sells (independently of AT&T) unlocked GSM iPhones does not change this.

  • Converting RAW to DNG! What are the advantages / disadvantages?

I have Canon cameras and shoot RAW, but the question itself is surely also valid for Nikon, Sony or other brand-shooters.
When importing my pictures to Lightroom, I could convert them to DNG but didn't do this up to now, because I do not know what I loose. I suppose that I loose the ability to process my files with DPP, but I will not do that anyhow. I can appreciate the advantage of having the file in an open documented format, where even I could easily write a reader for it. So the answer should not be what I can easily find in the Adobe introduction into DNG. I have also the DNG specification in front of me, and I can read it, because I once wrote a program to read TIFF files. I understand that I could add the original RAW image stream, but I do not want using up the space wasted for this. I know, that all development parameters used for the specific RAW image can be written with the image file instead of having those stored in a database or a side-car-file.
But what I did not find until now a technical explanation about what happens during the convert. Who can enlighten me? Where do I find the missing technical explanations?
    Thanks in advance!
    Lucien.

    That wasn't the question... .
Based on the title of the thread and your initial post, it seems like your question had a lot of
"What are the advantages / disadvantages?"
in it, and only a little
"What happens at a technical level when converting"
But if you want more detailed info about conversion, and you have the aptitude to understand, I recommend doing what Lr5user-pt recommended:
Download the DNG SDK and dig in - all your questions will be answered (and if not, you can also ask DNG-specific technical questions in the DNG forum).
As far as my "sources" regarding the technical summary I presented, they are many and varied, none of which are the DNG SDK. In other words, my knowledge is based more on experience over the years - I don't know all the details under the hood..
    Some experiments to consider doing:
    * exiftool (-X) a proprietary raw file, then convert to DNG and repeat.
    * open a proprietary raw in a DNG-supporting software of your choice and inspect metadata, then open the converted DNG in the same software and re-evaluate. Compare to proprietary raw opened in manufacturer's software, and what you see via exiftool.
Tom Hogarty (Lightroom project manager) and others who know have said: "DNG converter discards no metadata", and I believe them, but haven't verified for myself. Yet once proprietary metadata is in the DNG, most (all?) software will no longer decode it. A prime example is focus points - presumably they're there, but once converted, focus point feature is no longer supported. The amount of work required to support converted focus point data is unknown (to me), but as far as I know, no software has ventured to do it. If you want focus points, don't convert.
If you want the truth, I think for most people it's "not wise" to convert to DNG. Why? because unless you already know why you are converting (and need to convert to satisfy your goals), or you already know why you must NOT convert (e.g. so you can open the files in mfr.software, and see focus points..) the pros and cons are likely to be a wash, and now you have twice the number of raw files, unless you discard your originals, which would be REALLY "not wise", in my opinion. If you find the notion of "openly documented format" sufficiently compelling, then, ya know, more power to ya (I don't judge..), but there is no guarantee that DNG will outlast NEF (or..), and if it does, there will be ample opportunity to convert before you're left in the cold, unless you're stuck in a cave for a few decades, or are kryogenically frozen.. True, if all companies die, you may be able to write your own DNG converter (/reader), given the DNG documentation, but FWIW, NEF is also thoroughly documented (document is in freely downloadable SDK), and reverse engineerable (that's what Adobe and Phil Harvey does), so you could also write your own NEF converter, so not really a very compelling argument, not this year anyway - ask me again in a few decades..
If filesize is a main draw, then be sure NOT to save the hi-rez previews in your DNGs, otherwise you've just lost most or all of the filesize advantage. Also, you can strip previews from some proprietary raws (e.g. NEFs), to reduce filesize.
Personally, if DNG supported sidecars, I would be more likely to convert, because file-management/backup is only an issue if you "forget" about xmp sidecars (and I do not forget), and I'd rather have my xmp in separate ready-to-read xml text files, rather than embedded in binary files, but hey, that's me..
PS - I always use/encourage-others-to-use DNG when distributing raws to others for use in Adobe software, so xmp is not separate and can not get lost.
PPS - proprietary raws and dngs are both just glorified tiff files - raw data, previews, and metadata..
Don't get me wrong: I am NOT anti-DNG, and in fact - just the opposite: I am PRO dng, it's just that I wouldn't (don't) convert my own raws to DNG at this point. If you find the reasons to convert now are sufficiently compelling, you have my complete support and cooperation, fwiw..
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • In Synchronus way  what about  the next file of the Error files

    Hi,
I'm doing RFC to File  SYNCHRONUS... suppose if i'm sending files continusely.. imagine if one file is failre.. then what abt the next file.. whether the next file will load sussefully or.. it should stop  ..
because  I heard  in synchronus method.. response is compulsorry then only  it a can able to process for next  files... is it correct..? if  correct means.. then  how can we solve this problem... or correct me if any thing wrong ...
    Thanks
    Bbau

    Hi Babu,
I am not completely clear about your scenario.
Are you sending some data from RFC to a file and waiting for an acknowledgement?
It is true that Synchronous scenarios use Best Effort (sRFC) so  you can use this:
1)Configure the fault message also. So that if your file transfer is a failure then u get an exception message and this might end up one sync cycle.
    2) Trying a BPM in which you message (a file count and filename) asynchronously
on negative acknowledgement to another file. This will help u keep track of faulty deliveries.
    I hope it helps :).

  • What's the "other" files on mac?

Hey, i've been searching of ways to get my mac more space. When I look into: About this Mac > More info... > Storage, it says photos, musics etc and then it says "Other" and I have 253 GB there. What is this "Other"? How can I delete files in this category, to get more space free? I don't have an external hard drive, so i cannot simply drag my files to here. Please help, either with software, or any other way, any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    joaopada

You should simply get an external HD to store media such as music, photographs and movies tend to occupy the most space with many users. Apple discusses this in three advice letters which I will note below.
However what is occupying the Other space on your HD, this is made up of a variety of data including OS X, other data files from apps you have installed, Apps themselves, your Trash, downloads etc...
If you want to inventory your system then download and install a tool like Disk Inventory. You can find DI at:

  • Converted videos...now what?

I have managed to convert one part of a dvd movie into mp4 using videora. While waiting for the other parts to be converted, I have managed to put the first part into ipod.
However, since there are so many parts of the movie, how do I ensure that the movie is played continuously in ipod as one movie?
How do I group all those parts into one single movie as I will be converting other movies too later on and I don't want to have to all the different parts to be mixed up?
    Can anyone advise?

What many people overlook when discussing conversion times is the users processor. Converting a video into a different format is extreemly processor intensive, and just about the most strenuous thing most average home users will do their system. The time it takes is directly proportionate to the processing power of the processor.
Therefore there is no answer to how long it takes as it depends on what processor you have. Also the level of compression chosen will have another significant impact on the time taken.
    Thanks

  • Moved iTunes Library to External - Now What?

Moved my iTunes Library to an external hard drive, following the steps provided by the Apple Support.
Everything works fine, but now I want to delete my iTunes Library from my internal hard drive to make more room (approximately 60 gb).
    Step 13 has the following:
After the folder has been copied, locate your original iTunes Music folder, and drag it to the Trash or Recycle Bin. Note: Don't remove the iTunes library files that may be in the same location as the iTunes Music folder. For more information about the iTunes library files, see this article.
Went to the Finder / Music / iTunes /:
Found sub folders of: Album Artwork, iPod Games, iTunes Music, Mobile Applications
The iTunes Music Library.xml is also under itunes (apparently not suppose to delete this one per the article).
Question is which one it the Original iTunes Folder I'm suppose to delete? If someone can tell me where to locate it on the finder, that would be great.
None of the folders is showing anything near the size of 60 gb.
So far I only noticed an increase on my internal hard drive of 5 gb gained.
Sorry if this subject has been addressed before. I promise I did do a search on both google and the forum.
    Thanks for you help!

Of course after I post the question, I find the answer...Thanks

  • What about those updates and hard drive usage?

    Hello all
I have two questions I cant' find the answer for:
When I get all those great automatic updates to things like my operating system and quicktime etc, What is happening to the older versions- are they being thrown away or do I need to do something to keep files current?
2nd. I'm having a hard time finding out how my harddrive is being filled. It's capacity is 74GB. It says I am using 67GB but my applications are 5GB and my user is 45GB-which includes all music, movies, photos, documents &library. so I can find only 50GB being used. Where is the other 17 GB being used?
thanks for any help you can give.

Hi, Stevemac. Apple's automatic Software Update utility does away with the older software versions that it replaces — they're gone.
Proprietary automatic updaters from some other companies, notably Adobe, do the same. I'm not aware of any that leave the older version in place, but that certainly doesn't mean there aren't any.
Updates that you download and install yourself, manually, can be of at least two different kinds: one kind replaces the installed version with a newer one, destroying or discarding the old version in the process just like the automatic updaters mentioned above. The other kind creates an entirely new installation of the new version, leaving the old one in place for you to remove manually. The latter kind isn't really an updater; it's a full installer. The incomparable GraphicConverter's amazingly frequent updates are of this kind.
Regarding your second question, I sugggest you post it in one of the Tiger forums, which you can find listed here.

  • What about those gdesklets?

    Hi
I do not know if it is just me - but those gdesklets are not working. I've tried to solve the problem myself - and even commented on bug tracker. Still nothing?
What am I missing? Does it work for anyone?

I think someone should start an adesklets fan site or something that is slightly less strict about what gets published and what doesn't. Thanks to Google I've found quite a few desklets getting around for adesklets that haven't been anywhere near the sf.net page because it's just less hassle that way.
I don't have the time  these days to put together a half-way decent web page but if someone does should do something about it. I'd gladly help where I could.

Now U must unistall everthing from creative I mean everything use for it driver sweeper & driver cleaner.Net in safe mode when U will be sure that no creative drivers soft ect. remember to delete creative folder as well from programdata also and from install info to.
Remove your card from PC boot your bios load default settings go to windows and run the cleaners just to be sure if nothing have showed up, off your PC, install card again boot PC up make sure you don't let Windows to install it as HD audio device thats sometimes happen or don't let windows to install anything if Windows will atempt something U will get proper info just chose no don't install now. Install driver 2.8.0004, after reboot install consoles staff reboot and then install from CD things like THX console etc. you should be good

  • Eudora to Mail: got mailboxes, now what about attachments?

I've finally had to give up on Eudora, even though Mail STILL doesn't do all the nice things Eudora does, but I haven't found any other alternatives.  I'm running OSX 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro...not going to Mavericks yet because of imcompatible software at work.
I was able to successfully import all my mailboxes, with all messages apparently intact, EXCEPT the associated attachments are no longer available.  How do I get the attachments over from Eudora to Mail, or is that asking too much?  I can still find them one at a time by going back to the old Eudora folder in Documents, if I really have to, but that's cumbersome.

Well, I may not give up on it entirely, especially since I still like it so much more than Mail, but I've been running into enough glitches that I feel I should be prepared.  Been using it since 1996, through several upgrades of hardware and software.  Eudora 6.2 runs okay on my 2007 MacBook 10.4.11 but on my MacBook Pro 10.6.8 it tends to get a bit buggy at times, which always makes me wonder when something major will happen.  What panicked me this past week was that my In box suddenly decided to empty itself!  Not one single email, nothing.  Thank goodness I back up, but restoring was a real pain.  Plus I know Eudora won't work when I finally have to upgrade my OS.
So I'm currently simultaneously downloading email to both Eudora and Mail, just to cover my bases.  Not an ideal solution but it gives me some peace of mind.  But if I can't access attachments of imported emails, it may be more trouble than it's worth at this time.

  • Just downloaded the update on my windows computer and nowe get a runtime error.  It states that"r6034 an application has made an attempt to load the c runtime library incorrectly".  Now what?

Need to add something in the message!

Click here and follow the instructions. You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all related components, or run the process multiple times; this won't normally affect its library, but that should be backed up anyway.
