Converted videos...now what?

I have managed to convert one part of a dvd movie into mp4 using videora. While waiting for the other parts to be converted, I have managed to put the first part into ipod.
However, since there are so many parts of the movie, how do I ensure that the movie is played continuously in ipod as one movie?
How do I group all those parts into one single movie as I will be converting other movies too later on and I don't want to have to all the different parts to be mixed up?
Can anyone advise?

What many people overlook when discussing conversion times is the users processor. Converting a video into a different format is extreemly processor intensive, and just about the most strenuous thing most average home users will do their system. The time it takes is directly proportionate to the processing power of the processor.
Therefore there is no answer to how long it takes as it depends on what processor you have. Also the level of compression chosen will have another significant impact on the time taken.
Thanks
Tim

  • What program to install and convert video formats...?

I am trying to find a program that will install on 10.3.9 and that can convert video formats (ie mpg and mp4 to wmv). Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated. I did buy a newer Mac (PowerBook G4 with Leopard) but for now need to use my old Mac. I need to convert to WMV to use on my GoGear mp3 player, which is NOT Mac compatible, only Windows. How I miss my iPod Thanks again for any help.

Well ffmpeg should be included by default. It is the core of the VH engine, but it may have been updated since your version of VH. And you may not need it depending on the conversion you are trying to make. Which version of VH is it ?
So you are trying to convert the mpeg and mp4 files into wmv. Do you select the 320 pixels wide option ? Are the source movies 320 pixels wide ? or larger ?
What settings do you use in VH ? ie. Which tab do you select for converting to ? and what options do you select within it ?
Do you change the destination directory ?
If you open the mkv files in QuickTime, it may complain about missing codecs, click Cancel and it'll leave you with a blank window. Select "Show Movie Properties" under the Window menu, what is under "Format" for the Video Track ? Is there also an Audio Track ?
QuickTime shouln't complain about the movie, mpeg and mp4 should open and play just fine. If it does complain it's almost certain that the files are not the format they claim to be - the Show Movie Properties will sort this out.

I opened my iPhoto library today which was stored on an external hard drive and several of my videos now will not play at all. The weird thing is that each file shows a duration of 1 second and when I open them it just shows one frame. What the !&%$#@ Where did my original video files go?

Sounds like a good plan, you can never be to safe and having a second External HD is safer than one.
The only thing that I would do different, is setup the 3T as my TimeMachine Backup and then erase and move my Photos, Videos and perhaps even iTunes Media to the 1T. That way you will have room to backup both the Internal Hard Drive and the 1T External Hard Drive to the 3T using TimeMachine.
Take your time, study and use the > Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions if you get stuck or aren't sure how to make the move.

  • What does the video size or resolution have to be when converting videos?

  • What exactly does "convert [video] selection for iphone" do?

I have a lot of video, both movies and tv shows, that I've used ffmpegx to convert (usually from .avi) to an AppleTV preset in h264. As it stands, iTunes won't allow me to put them on the 3G. (I know some people have had problems with putting h264 on their 2.0 firmware phones, but this question is a little different.) If I tell iTunes to convert the selection for me, what happens? Does it duplicate the video in two resolutions? Will it reduce the resolution and make the video look worse on my AppleTV? Or is it completely harmless?
Also, is there any reliable way to convert video in a batch, perhaps with a third-party program? It's pretty obnoxious that you can only convert one video at a time, slowly, with iTunes.

The iPhone can play these formats:
H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats.
What ever you do its going to take a long time to convert a large library. Which is why I recommend the Turbo.264. I'm converting a full length movie to iPhone format at 48fps as I write this. Also because the Turbo takes the strain off the Mac I can carry on using my computer with no problems.

Trying to convert video in .MTS format to wok on Imovie. Doiwnloaded TotalVideo Converter Light. Tried converting it to Avi., .DV, .mp4, imovie, and then dragging to IMovieHd, but it doesn't accept it. nothing is working.
Frustrated, no format seems to work.

iMovieHD means - in Apples officiall nomenclatura - vers 5. A very, very obsolete version...
is this really your version you're using?

  • Flip video avi files . . . now what?

Just rec'd 10 or so avi files made with one of those cute flip vid cams. Now what?
I'd like to edit them in imovie hd 6x but of course I'll need to convert them first. Right now I only have white screen and audio. Do not have QT Pro, but installed Perian. Still same look --white screen and audio. What other components do I need to get going?
    Thx for help.

My bad . . . I forgot about mpegStreamclip. Opened avi file and converted to dv. All is well, maybe.
Interesting how original avi file at 12 mg exploded to 82 mg as dv. I used default conversion settings in streamclip. Is that correct? Is there a better conversion format/container I should use for editing in imovie 6 (or FCE)?
    Thx.

Thanks for the pointers folks. Yeah, 1.5GB is pretty poor isn't it? There are other suppliers, but you have to get a their phone line installed to access the internet so it's an £85 setup fee plus a day off work for a guy to come round and drill a hole in your wall before you even get to the monthly costs.
Don't get me wrong though - I'm certainly not an Apple basher, but am equally frustrated with both them and the ISP.
Virgin Media spend all kinds of money advertising their broadband as the fastest in the UK, but don't tell you (up front anyway) that you'll be cut off if you actually try and use it.
Apple on the other hand carry on with their 'it just works' mantra, but with Apple TV this only applies if you meet certain criteria (again, not mentioned up front).
I guess it aint a biggie, as i was gifted my Apple TV, and love all the other stuff it does, but from the number of posts on this forum can see that there's a lot of angry customers out there who want explanations as to why they're having similar problems to me.
Will be very interesting to see if Apple release any kind of software update that turns the flash drive from a buffer to permanent storage, to at least ease some of the pain...

If the videos are on your computer, just drag them into iTunes when viewing the library. Then right click it and go to convert video for ipod.

In trying to html5 compliant I want to convert my video files to the .ogg format. After a lot of searching for video converters, I cannot find one that does this; although several claim to but actually don't. Converting audio isn't so much of a problem.
