Where are you importing from, a camera, a file?????
Please provide some type of specific info regards the import.
FYI: FCE works with only DV, HDV and AVCHD codecs.

How do you import music from itunes to Final Cut Express 4?

I tried dragging and dropping the file from itunes to Final Cut Express, but that doesn't work, so I tried to import a file using the "import file" and that didn't work either. Then I found the original file using finder, and dragged it into Final Cut Express, which did put the file there, and I can hear the audio in the sample player, but when I try to play it in the sequence, this weird beeping happens. Any help?

The beeping is relating to audio you have placed into your sequence that doesn't match your sequence settings, therefore needing to be rendered.

Problems with converted .MTS files in Final Cut Express 4

I have a hard drive full of video shot and a consumer grade HD camera in the .MTS format.
After struggling with finding an acceptable converter, I finally bought iSkysoft's Video Converter.
I've been using the converter's output preset of "MP4 Format for Final Cut X" and "High definition MP4 format" settings and they both yield the same results.
Now I am having problems simply editing the footage in FCE4.
I can take the footage and set i/o points in them but when I drag clips into the timeline, it often hangs up, locks up, FCE is unresponsive and it's even crashed.
This is on a 2 x 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Mac running 10.6.8.

In order to use .mts video in Final Cut Express, you need to convert the video to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec before importing into FCE. .mts video files are typically H.264 video, highly compressed and is not something that FCE can edit. Ditto for "MP4 format for FCPX or HighDef MP4 format". If iSkysoft cannot convert to QT/AIC then I suggest Clipwrap
Note: for the future, if your camcorder is an AVCHD camcorder you can directly ingest the video from the camcorder into FCE.

Trouble understanding and converting .avi files in Final Cut Express

I recently just purchased my first Mac with Final Cut Express and am very excited to start editing again, both photos and video. The camera I use (Nikon D90) saves the video format as .avi But Final Cut Express can't read .avi clips when they get transferred. Now i know there are programs out there that fix this situation (I just downloaded the trial for VoltaicHD, its very easy to use and gets the job done) but its a limited download and will expire soon. Before I spend $, is there a free way of doing this (i.e. a free download) or is this something you normally need to purchase when coming across this situation? and Is Apples $30 dollar converter download any different from VoltaicHD's $30 dollar converter download. Thank you anyone who reads this and helps me out.

Bringing vector graphics from illustrator photoshop final cut express.

I'm having a heck of a time getting my logo from illustrator to photoshop to final cut express. It is squishing it. It looks jagged in photoshop. I am cutting and pasting from an eps file to a photoshop doc that is for film and video. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

If you have a problem with working with Photoshop you probably want to go to the Adobe forums.
If you're placing the vector graphic in a Photoshop file make it whatever size you need it to be. You're video image is the square pixel equivalent of 720x540. If you need the logo to fill the frame from edge to edge then make it that size. If you need it smaller, make the PSD smaller.

From Photoshop to Final Cut Express to iDVD Problem

I can't seem to figure it out. I'm creating a widescreen presentation. I'm using photoshop to create a slide, I then export it into final cut express to create a slide show. When I export it using file>export>quicktime movie... the quality looks terrible, and isn't in 16:9. It looks pushed together, and font looks incredibly blurry.
When I export using quicktime conversion (which I think takes the chapters ability away) it looks great cause I export to extremely high settings. Then when I insert the movie into iDVD, its back in 4:3 nasty pushed together mode.
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG!

And just to clarify a bit. Anything I'm exporting, even if its widescreen footage, using file<export<quicktime movie... is 4:3. Why the **** is this happening?

How do I export video from Iphone4 to Final Cut Express?

I have been successful in exporting photos from the iPhone4 to iPhoto. An earlier post was told to use iPhoto for downloading/exporting video but that did not work with me. Suggestions?

Thank you again. I was able to use Image Capture which found all of my images but not the videos that I was looking for. Now, I realize that I have left out an important piece of information in this mystery -- the videos were shot using Vericorder's 1stVideo Net. Realizing this I went to their site which was no help to me. Now I am wondering if there is an app that works like the Mac OS X "finder" but on the iPhone???

You can unlink the audio and video in the timeline (click the small chain link icon in the top right of the timeline) and delete the video or audio track. Is this what you meant?

Can I Transfer iMovie files to Final Cut Express HD?

I have just upgraded from iMovie to Final Cut Express HD.... I had captured 15 hours of world travel movies in iMovie and realized I needed a more powerful application to do the travel movies justice. But I am wondering if I can use the raw material that I imported or.... YUCK>... if I will have to re-capture the files in Final Cut. Can anyone let me know a solution that saves time?

OK, here's what I'd do based on what I've tried so far in getting iMovie
.dv files into FCE and avoiding having to render.
Open your iMovie .dv file in Quicktime Pro.
Extract the audio track
Export the audio track as a Quicktime Movie, Linear PCM format, Channels Stereo (L R), 48kHz, 16bit sample size
Delete the audio track from the .dv file
Open the exported audio file, select all and copy.
Select All in the .dv file
Add the exported Audio file using Add to Movie
Export/Save As the .dv file as a self contained Quicktime Movie
Use this movie in FCE
The benefit of this approach as opposed to exporting .dv file in one go is
that the only thing that is truely exported, etc is the Audio track which is
relatively quick. The video track is left unchanged so there is no loss in
quality.
The resultant file never has to be rendered in FCE.

It's an Applescript droplet that you can drag the iMovie DV stream media files onto and it'll run away and convert them. There's also a standalone version of the script if you want to run it from the script menu on individual files, etc. It's a 0.9 release since for ease of development in Applescript it doesn't include any error handling, etc. Also I've just realised it assumes 16 bit audio.

Iphotos into Final Cut Express?

How do I import photos from iphoto into Final Cut Express to make a hi-end slide show? I'm new to FCE, so I appreciate any help you guys could give!

Personally, I did use PhotoToMovie quite a lot. It has a nnice clean interface. I checked out the Fotomagico a few times, but the app seemed fussy and cluttered (YMMV). However, I needed to do a big project last autumn using a little animation (largely done with wipes) as well as the slides and I finally got - to some degree - comfortable with FCE.
Where FCE really began to shine was after the big work was done. We had a slideshow with motion graphics (pan and scan) plus a narration. When the client wanted to drop a sentence from the narration and change another it was a few seconds work. Literally. For that kind of control there is nothing in PhotoToMovie or the other apps that will even come close.
My advice is -and this and a dollar together might pay for a coffee - is to stick with FCE. When you have a problem it has many more ways to solve it than the others. Further, for my money, the time it takes to learn the app is well repaid: remember the learning you do on the montages will also feed into the video work and vie versa. You'll be learning one tool, not two.

Final Cut Express Quit Unexpectedly

I recently upgraded from imovie to final cut express, and i have no clue how to cut out scenes that i dont want!! i'm making a mountain biking movie and theres lots of scences that turned out bad that i want to cut out please help me learn how to cut scenes!!

Welcome to the family, glad you came.
There is a specific forum for FCE, back up one or two forums or try Home and you will find it in the FC area. FCE is a very powerful editing platform and it doesn't work anything like iMovie did.
Do yourself a big favor and take the time to run the tutorials. You will learn how to trim your clips and place them in the timeline with transisions. Each of your clips can be trimmed by dragging the in and out points around. It's a blast.
You will need lots of patience as you move from iMovie into the sophistication and creative flexibility of FCE. All of that creativity requires careful attention and you must learn how to talk to the application. It's not particularly difficult, it's just that there are so many different ways to do even the most basic things.

Yes, Final Cut Express will run on your MacBook. When you purchase, be sure to get FCE version 3.5 (not an earlier version).
What are the specs of your MacBook - especially how much RAM memory and what size HD you have in it.
Here are the FCE technical specs. Even though the minimum requirement is 512MB RAM, Final Cut Express will run much better if you have at least 1GB RAM in your MacBook (and 1GB RAM is the minimum if you plan to do HDV video).

How can I find serial number for upgraded Final Cut Express?

On my old G4 laptop, I had upgraded from Final Cut Express to Final Cut Express HD. Just bought a Mac Mini and installed FCE HD, but it's asking me for the serial number from the original Final Cut Express from which I upgraded. Duh. Of course I don't have that any more.
Does anyone know if this might still be found on my hard drive somewhere? Thanks.

Probably not. But just in case, fire up FCE on your old G4 laptop, then do +About Final Cut Express+ and look at the serial number below your name. It's probably the serial number of your FCE-HD Upgrade but there's an off chance it may be your original serial number.
Also, if you sold or gave away your original Full version of FCE, and someone else has installed it on their Mac, you are no longer properly licensed on your current system. You have to keep the original, Full version in order to be licensed to use the Upgrade. That's why the Upgrade asks for both serial numbers.
One other thing, only FCE4 is supported on Show Leopard (assuming your MacMini is new, it will have Snow Leopard on it.)

My existing movies are all the following types straight from FinalCut
Apple Intermediate Codec, 1920 × 1080, Millions
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo, 48.000 kHz
This particular movie is 6.66 Gb
The new Quicktime player in OS Mavericks converts these to the following format:
Apple ProRes 422, 1920 x 1080
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 2 channels, 48000 Hz
And a movie size of 6.48 Gb
Please, please can someone tell me why?
