Converter question? recommendations?

So I saw a few posts that tell people who only need 1 or 2 inputs to get a converter instead of an interface because it's cheaper. Does anyone have any recommendations on converters? I'd like to look into it. (also will a converter have outputs for monitors?)

If you can afford it and only need two channels, try the Rosetta 200.

    1. What is the recommended way to store images? Convert all to dng and discard the camera raw or keep both? If keep both I double my storage needs.
    2. Under preferences there is a compression selection. I know it says lossless but is it really, and do many people use it?
    3. Are there any other advantages to using dng over raw within the editing process?
    TIA

    1.  If you are going to convert to DNG, you should keep the original raw images.  Not all raw converters are capable of editing DNG files.  As far as storage space is concerned, burn the original raw images to a DVD, or get an external hard drive.  After a while you might realize that all your images are not needed.
    2.  If there is any loss of quality, I will be surprised if you will be able to actually see it.  As far as I'm concerned, it is truly lossless.  In my opinion most images are not so unbelievably priceless and irreplaceable that this should be of any concern whatsoever.
    3.  "Other" advantages?  Is there really an advantage at all in the first place?  That is my question.  With my camera there is no reduction in the size of the image in DNG format.  If you are using Camera Raw you don't have to concern yourself with XMP files because all the changes are stored within the DNG itself.  But in Lightroom that isn't a concern because you only have XMP files if you specifically want them.  So, I guess the real question for you is, is there ANY advantage to using DNG?  Personally, I don't see any real advantage to converting.

  • DNG converter question

I apologize for asking this question in this forum. But the DNG forum is not very active it seems. I have seen this problem mentioned in the past, but paid no attention to it and I can't find any of the references. I have no convert button on my DNG converter dialogue. Windows 7, DNG converter 8.4, 8 GB RAM. I have used this utility in the past without problems. I don't use it very often but was experimenting this morning

I posted a similar question quite a while ago, and what I learned was that Bridge has a DNG converter built in, but it's using ACR to read the file before it can convert. So you need ACR support for your camera.
AFAIK there's no way to point Bridge to a standalone DNG converter.
I suggested an updateable DNG converter plugin for Bridge, don't know why nobody listened...I thought it was an excellent idea
As for the metadata, you just have to try. I don't know if it can write metadata when it can't read the file.

  • Kona DVCPro HD to HDCAM Cross-Convert Question for Shane Ross

Hi Shane (Or anyone else whose done this)... Shane posted the comment below at Creative Cow Oct'06:
Quoting Shane: "...because with FCP I can capture DVCPRO HD 720p 23.98 and edit at full resolution. When I lock picture I can, with the use of a Kona 3, cross convert to 1080p 23.98 via the hardware and output to HDCAM."
GREAT! I want to mimic this workflow!!! I have a completed project that was edited as above in FCP (based on your creative cow video tutorial). I shot with the HVX200.
    1. Are you happy with the cross-converted 960X720 DVCPro HD footage to 1080p 23.98 quality? I'm assuming this is 1920X1080...
1b. Why not 1280X720? The original .mxf. Seems like that would provide better resolution . What am i missing?
    2. Any Artifacting/aliasing? How did titles and transitions hold up? Did the reds bleed?
    3. Are there any new advances that you've come across that i should look into as well?
    4. And, can you be more specific about how you did question # 1. What codec; Does it come with the card or is it in FCP? What VTR do you suggest?
    5. Can i do the above with a BlackMagic card? Which one?
    6. What am i forgetting to ask?
Big fan, your posts have saved me hours of headaches over the last 5 months. Cheers...

Absolutely. It looks great. But, this is HDCAM, so it is anamorphic HD...1440x1080. Since DVCPRO HD is anamorphic as well...it all works out.
1b. Why not 1280X720? The original .mxf. Seems like that would provide better resolution . What am i missing?
The network delivery specs require a 1080p 23.98 master on HDCAM or D5. They chose that because you can convert that into anything.
    2. Any Artifacting/aliasing? How did titles and transitions hold up? Did the reds bleed?
No artifacting or aliasing whatsoever. Titles and transitions all held up. No bleeding in the reds.
    3. Are there any new advances that you've come across that i should look into as well?
ProRES...that will come with FCP 6. I'll be playing with that codec when I get my hands on it.
    4. And, can you be more specific about how you did question # 1. What codec; Does it come with the card or is it in FCP? What VTR do you suggest?
It was really VERY simple. The Kona 3 has an option in the Kona control panel to cross convert 720p to 1080p. We chose that. Then we blacked the first 3 min of the tape, then used EDIT TO TAPE to output. The card did everything. Not sure about the model of the VTR...it was the Sony HDCAM deck (not HDCAM SR).
    5. Can i do the above with a BlackMagic card? Which one?
I don't know if any of the Blackmagic cards can cross convert. You'll have to ask them.
    6. What am i forgetting to ask?
Where you can send the check for all the workflow advice I am giving to you (and everyone)
Also, how did we deal with our downconverted masters we were also required to deliver. While the network wants an HD master, they don't air HD. They air in SD from a digitbeta master. We had to do a separate output to digibeta with all the graphics properly sized for letterbox output.

  • Time Capsule connected to Netgear WNDR3700 via Ethernet - Questions/Recommendations

The more I research this the more confused I have become
As I already had my Netgear router when I got my TC I just connected the TC to the Netgear router via ethernet and all was well but other matters I was looking at led me down this path and now I have some questions:
    1) From what I have read this is probably why my "wake for network access" is not working (because Netgear is main router)?
    2) is there any advantage to having 2 routers, it appears that I have 2 options for WiFi connections in this configuration, is this true?...if so should I have the TC as the main router and then connect the Neatgear to it?

    1) From what I have read this is probably why my "wake for network access" is not working (because Netgear is main router)?
Is the TC in bridge mode.. if it is double NAT it will certainly not pass wake on lan packets.
Not all routers pass wake on lan packets correctly. As is often the case you might find apple use a different system.. so even if set correctly it still won't pass them.. or visa versa.. the netgear won't pass the apple magic packet.
    2) is there any advantage to having 2 routers, it appears that I have 2 options for WiFi connections in this configuration, is this true?...if so should I have the TC as the main router and then connect the Neatgear to it?
You do not ever want 2 routers.. working as routers..
There is nothing wrong with having two routers but one is setup in bridge or WAP mode or if it doesn't have any of those then WAN BYPASS. ie you must use it as a WAP and switch only and bypass all routing function .. this is trivial to achieve.. simply plug in by LAN .. with IP set statically to same IP range as the main router but usually outside the dhcp scope.. and with dhcp turned off so you have no conflict in dhcp.
The end result is you may then setup wireless in a any number of ways.. but primary method is roaming.. which is actually apple recommended method.
Both routers use the identical wireless name = SSID. Identical security settings and password.
What makes the two different is channels.. they should be on non-overlapping channels. Mostly leaving things on auto works but sometimes people find it is better to manually set.
The alternative is to have two different wireless networks.. this can also work if you need to set up some clients to one device.. eg the TC for backups.. as that will cause network slowdown for other clients that need fast internet connection.. so you can take charge and split the load between Time Machine users and non-TM users.

  • AVCHD converter question

    Here are the bullet points
I took some footage from my Cannon HF 200.
The footage was taken on a 32 SDHC card.
The footage is now transferred to an external drive. I am using Adobe Premiere 8.
The footage is in the MTS. format and I am trying to convert it.
I am looking at this called AVCH converter but unsure if it is any good and I do not want to download spamware
I have heard that something called a video splitter would be good.
I just want to convert the footage into a format where the video does not skip and looks presentable.
    Any recommendations would be helpful.

    New Age Outlaw
I am not sure that I fully understand what you are getting at when you say....
"I heard that I could also do a preview render of file in Premiere during the editing phase.
    Would that also work?"
Your project preset (new project dialog) is set as close as possible to the properties of the video to be imported so that you will have a reasonable template from which to edit. If you video is AVCHD Full HD1080i30 (that is 1920 x 1080 frame size at 30 frames per second) and did not have 5.1 channel sound, you would select the project preset (new project dialog) = NTSC/AVCHD/Full HD1080i30. By default, Edit Menu/Preferences/General "Default Scale to Frame Size" would be checked.
So, when you go to Render the Timeline (Edit Mode) by pressing the Enter Key of the computer main keyboard, the end result will be the best possible preview of the end product displayed in the Edit Mode Monitor. It does not impact Quality. The program generates preview files to be used for preview purposes. There is no encoding going on in this process. This Rendering does not stop you from exporting with a different export choice. But, the ideal is as described to edit with a template as close as possible to the source media and export accordingly. Beware of those high definition rendered preview files and any pile ups of them on your hard drive. Best direct those preview files to an external hard drive (formatted NTFS, not FAT32).
Playback of your Canon AVCHD with a .mts file extension is another story. True, you right click the video and see an option for Open With, but will your AVCHD .mts playback natively in Windows Media Player. I think not unless you have certain plugins and third party decoders. The choice of player may present a challenge. I am not sure if I understand what you mean by:
"Also when I attempted to open up the MTS files, a window popped up asking what program do I want to use to open them
up in? I chose Windows Media player. It is still an MTS file but will this have any effect during the conversion process?
Playback of a video on a player should not impact its properties, so I am not sure what I am missing here.

  • International travel (South America/Chile) and adapter/converter questions

I am traveling to Chile in South America and want to make sure I will be safe using my macbookpro with just a simple adapter (no power converter) - http://shop1.frys.com/product/1769498?site=sr:SEARCH:MAINRSLTPG
I understand the the plug and adapter that came with the computer should allow an input range of 110 - 240 (Chile is 220) but I have read on forums of people's notebook getting fried.
Anybody know what else I could get to be safe or should I be ok with just a standard adapter?

I go to Santiago annually and all you need is the round pin adapter. If you have any dollar stores in your neighborhood look there first as several of them where I live (my neighbourhood is pretty ethnically diverse) sell them for 99 cents.

  • USB to 232 Converter Question

    Hello
I an working on a project that will use LV to send a string to a 8051 MCU.  Prior to my knowledge of the NI USB-232 device that already has a driver written I spec'ed a radio shack USB to 232 cable.  I selected that cable because I have used it in the past and it alwasys seemed to work without a problem.
BUT (isn't there always a but)  I noticed that sometimes when the cable is plugged into the PC it does not always get configured as the same com port.
My question is this:  If I am not sure which com port will be created when the USB to 232 cable is plugged into the PC how can I get LV to find the correct com port so it can send the sting to the MCU?
    Best Regards
    Tim C.
1:30 Seconds ARRRGHHH!!!! I want my popcorn NOW! Isn't there anything faster than a microwave!

I know that I am replying to an old thread, but I thought I would fill in some information for anyone else who happens upon this. Windows utilizes the product serial number in order to uniquely identify USB devices on the system. If there is no serial number (which is optional for USB devices), the device is identified by the USB port to which it is connected.
Many "electronics store" USB to serial converters (and even some more expensive ones) do not provide serial numbers, so Windows has no way to recognize when the same hardware is plugged into a different USB port. This means that any time you switch USB ports, you are likely to receive a new port number.
You will probably always receive the same port number as long as you are careful to always use the same USB port.
This should not be a problem with any product which supplies a unique serial number to Windows, although this is dependent on the individual driver implementation. Unfortunately is is virtually impossible to tell without buying a product whether it will identify itself in this way. All NI USB-232 and USB-485 products identify themselves uniquely to the operating system, and we take care to ensure that you
will always receive the same port number, even when switching USB
    ports.

  • Converter question

I would like to store phone numbers as text in a database without any formatting. That is, if a user enters 111-222-3333 or (111)222-3333 or even 111 222 3333, the number would be stored as 1112223333. The idea is to allow the user enter phone numbers any way he wants, as long as it contains 10 numbers. (I defined a validator to make sure of that.)
When a phone number is retrieved from the database, I want to format it before displaying it. So 1112223333 would be displayed as 111-222-3333.
I thought a converter would do exactly that, but that doesn't appear to be the case.
Here's my understanding of what a converter does:
    1. getAsObject takes the contents of, say a text field or static text, and returns an object that represents the internal data representation.
In my case, the input is a phone number entered by a user and the output is the phone number with all formatting removed.
    2. getAsString takes the internal data representation and returns a String that represents the value displayed in say a text field or static text.
In my case, the input is a phone number without formatting and the output is a phone number with formatting.
I created a converter whose getAsObject returns a String without formatting and whose getAsString returns a String with formatting. That didn't work.
So I created another converter whose getAsObject returns a StringValue object. StirngValue is just a wrapper for a String.
    public class StringValue {
        public StringValue() {
        private String value;
        public String getValue() {
            return this.value;
        public void setValue(String value) {
            this.value = value;
    }This doesn't work either.
Can anyone suggest how I can make this work?
Or is my understanding of converters off base?
Should I just use a fixed format for phone numbers and force the user to enter them in that format?
    I appreciate your assistance.

I tested your SQL with MySQL and, with some syntax adjustments, it does what you advertise. I appreciate that.
But this approach causes problems with data binding and for automatically updating a phone number.
I can solve the data binding problem by defining an alias. For exampleSELECT concat(substr(phone_number,1,3),'-',substr(phone_number,4,3),'-',substr(phone_number,7,4)) as numberI should then be able to bind this formatted phone number to a text field, etc.
What I can't do, and what I want to do, is update a phone number using the data provider's commitChanges method. For example, a user changes a phone number and clicks Update.
This is where I thought a converter would help. I got the converter to work with phone numbers that weren't bound to a data provider, but it didn't work as I expected when the phone number was bound to a data provider.
So while this solves part of the problem, it doesn't solve all of it.

  • Video file converter question..

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good, free video converter that will convert avi to mpeg?
    Thank you!

It depends on what you are trying to achieve. There are a number of options. As for the previous post, an AVI is a container, not a codec. So, are you looking to convert the video from one codec to another, or switch containers, or what?
What's the end goal? Do you need to convert for player compatibility? Editing?

  • Down Convert Questions

    Hey gang,
So, I'v noticed quite a few complaints people have been having with compressing HD footage for SD DVD using the latest version of Compressor. Unfortunately, I have recently discovered similar issues and was just hoping to get some input on the best way to work around the poor quality exports from Compressor.
Currently, I'm working on a 20 minute short film that was shot on a Panasonic HVX200 in 1080i. I much prefer using 720p when shooting on the HVX, but I wasn't the DP in this scenario. Just to clarify, the footage is 1920x1080 and 23.98 fps. We edited in FCP, color corrected (and de-interlaced) in color, and have been attempting to export to DVD.
The compressions we've done so far look pretty terrible. Not noticing too much aliasing, but there's some sort of awful looking moire/artifacting going on in the very deep blacks. This is a black and white film, so that really becomes distracting. In doing my research here, it looks this is just an unavoidable result of using the new Compressor, so I'm trying to narrow down my options.
It seems that the first solution is to try adjusting the frame controls to achieve better quality while resizing, although I see that while this drastically increases compression time, the improvement may be marginal at best. I'm wondering if it would possibly be better for me to nest the sequence in FCP and resize it there before I compress it for DVD? Is that the dumbest idea ever?
The other possible solution I had would be to export a full-res QT of the film (I don't even want to think about how long that will take), and then compress that with an older version of Compressor that I have access to. I would like to just export a reference QT ( i.e. a version that is not self-contained) of the film, but I wasn't sure if an older version of Compressor (the version that came with FCS2) would be able to work with a reference QT exported from the newer version of FCP. Do reference QTs follow the same backwards compatibility restrictions as FC files? This is a process that I would like to avoid, but if the results are much better it might be worth it.
I know you guys are probably sick of dealing with this question over and over, but any input you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

Not if your opening then with some other program. The backward compatibility issue is form Final Cut (newer) to Final Cut (older).

  • PDF Converter question

I have just bought your pdf file converter however I lose my font when the file is converted to a pdf is that normal? Thank you

I think you can do this without too much trouble.
    You need 2 things
1)The custom checkin page - I think the easiest way to do this is by creating a custom profile via Configuration Manager
2)Make sure that only documents checked in via this page are converted - this can be easily done with the SelectivelyRefineAndIndex component link on this page http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/content-management/ucm/samples/index.html.
You could use the trigger value that chooses the profile to determine that the item needs to go through the Inbound Refinery.
    Hope that helps

  • NEWBIE QUESTION: Recommended Books or Videos?

Vtc has excellent tutorials, you can buy the cd or pay 30.00 a month for unlimited video tutorials in over 300 software programs, I learned how to use Sonar, Ableton, and A few Adobe and Macromedia prgrams. Now I am using logic now that I have an Apple G5 (5 days new) , which I find to be a lot easier to learn after taking the other tutorials, I was able to start recording from day 1 with Logic. I am not trying ro make this a DAW debate, but I prefer some of the features in Logic and some of the features in Sonar, either one will get the job done, but checkout VTC, you can even try out the first 5 or more lesson for free.
