Converting 1080 24p to SD 60i

I have finshed editing a :30 commercial that was shot at 24
p 1080
on EX-1. I need to render out three versions of this spot.  One needs
to be 1080i 29.97, one needs to be 72
0p and finaly a standard def 16:9 1.2 format. what is the best way to render these without it making these "ghosting" duplicate frame effects?

When I take project into AE and place into
sd comp at 29.97, it seems to do fine. AE adds the frames
( drop down I guess) and no apparent frame ghosting effect

    Hi there! A little bit of a conundrum, but I'm sure the answer is out there.
    I have about 4 hours of content that was shot on the Sony FS700. The clips were shot at varying frame rates, but the FS700 automatically conforms high-speed footage at 1080/24p. We've already imported to ProRes 422, but I also have the source media (as shot) still available.
    I need to covert everything to 720p/24, and also conform to real-time. There's obviously a VERY long story as to why I'd need to "throw out" frames, but that's beside the point. We've all dealt with silly clients...
    Rest assured, our group will edit with the original media (and just speed up when we need real-time.) Any suggestions? I'm on a Mac with Adobe CS6 (new convert!) and Final Cut Studio 3. I also own Telestream Episode. THANKS!

    Thanks very much for your help. Yes, it was the faster frame rate I was thinking that I thought could help for the fast action sequences. I was concerned about the jello problem that might be more noticeable at a lower frame rate in fast action scenes. If I'm not mistaken, I believe the GH1 doesn't shoot interlaced, only 1080p and 720p in its movie modes.
    Actually, sorry I made a mistake in my previous post. In 720, the Gh1 shoots at 60fps, not 30.
    My plan was for the timeline sequence to be 1080 and just drop the 720/60p scenes into the 1080/24p timeline. On the GH1, the advantage of shooting in the 720/60p mode is the great slow motion shots you get when slowed down to 24p. Otherwise, yes, the majority would be 24p.

    Seems I'm needing to go the opposite direction from most folks here, convert 24p to 30i. And I'm new to HD, so please bear with me.
    I'm doing an off line edit for a project that will be finalized elsewhere to air in HD 1080 30i. We are sending them the HDCAM tapes, they are sending me time coded dvcam dubs of the HD material. Some of the material was shot on film, and we got the HDCAM tapes in as 1080 23.98. The dub house (who will online the final project in HD) told my producer the material can not be converted to 30i because it "would have to be rendered and then the quality would be unacceptable". They also work with Final Cut.
    Can anyone give me a heads up as to what's involved in this process? Is it something the Final Cut suite doesn't handle? I looked here and online, but most folks want to convert the other way. I did see answers here suggesting simply dropping the 24p material into a 30i timeline, then rendering. Does that give choppy results? I had thought that Cinema Tools or Compressor would be able to handle this smoothly, though there might be a bit of rendering involved (creating frames versus removing them). Obviously movies do end up being broadcast on TV, so it can be done. I'm looking at maybe 6 or 7 clips, 2 to 4 minutes each. Is this something that has to done during the initial conversion from film? Best case scenario is that I just had 2 non technical people talking to each other. Worst case is that it will be an expensive lesson. I'd welcome any thoughts. ("Find out all the details before you agree to anything" has already occurred to me)

    Some material that was originally shot on film came to me as HDCAM 23.98
    Most material was originally shot on HDCAM and is 59.94 (I must assume), there is no problem converting this material to DVCAM.

    Downconverting to DVCAM is easy as well. All this
    can be done at a post facility. Even converting
    23.98 to DVCAM at 29.97 is fairly standard. Then you
    can reverse telecine the footage to 23.98 and do your
    offline cut.
    HDCAM downconverted to DVCAM is standard. It would
    be better to remain in an HD realm if you can,
    transfer the HDCAM to DVCPRO HD and capture and work
    with that. All you need is a firewire 800 drive or
    better yet, a couple eSATA units. I am using the
    caldigit.com S2VR Duos myself for DVCPRO HD.
    I am still curious as to why you need to convert
    29.97 to 59.94?
    Good advice on staying HD, but late in the project for that. The workflow from my last project was this:
    1. Post house dubbed HDCAM tapes to DVCAM, sent them to me, I put together the project.
    2. I sent my project files to the post house along with a reference DVD and associated files
    3. Post house batch captures from HDCAM using my project file time code, does regular post tweeking.
    The only new element that seems to be a problem this time is that the post house is telling me they can't convert the 23.98 material to a format they can use (59.94), then get me DVCAM dubs of that material.
    And an update, just got an email as I was writing saying they can do it but it would take too long. They can ship the tapes out of house but it would be "really expensive".

  • How do I convert 1080 24p NTSC to PAL format, - whats the right frame rate ?

    I have some footage* that I want to convert to PAL HD.   Currently its in NTSC HD.
    What is the best frame rate / frame size  to convert into?  Do I have to convert it up to 50fps (or 25fps) and turn it into interlaced?

    PAL is 720 x 576 pixels interlaced (bottom first).
    If it's 16:9 aspect ratio, you need to select "Anamorphic" and the frame rate it 25 fps.
    If you need help with Compressor settings - I use Best for everything including re-sizing - processing is slow but the result is excellent.
    I believe you can use MPEG Streamclip for converting, but I have not tried it.

  • Can Apple tools convert 1080 (60i) HDV to 24p ProRes well?

    Folks, I have video that's HDV (1440x1080) at 60i that I need to convert to 24p. I have not been able to successfully do this transcode and have smooth result.
    Are any of the Apple tools up for this task or do I need to look elsewhere for third party tools? I've tries several variations of compressor settings to see if I can get smooth playback, but instead the results are choppy and occasionally smooth for a moment.

    If you have to mix the footage, you might try adding pulldown to the 24P footage to make it run at 30. I believe Graeme's Standards converter will add pulldown - or Shake. Then you can cut the 30fps footage into a 60i timeline...
    As to dealing with HDV native timeline - maybe you should edit in a AIC timeline?

  • Shooting in 1080/24p - exporting as PAL

    Hi,
    Does anyone have experience with shooting footage in 1080/24p mode, editing with FCP (1080/24p mode), and then exporting it as PAL 1080/50i?
    Does the image get distorted or something like that?
    I have a camera with 1080/60i and 1080/24p, and I need to send some DVDs in PAL
    (or should I export it in FCP as 1080/24p and then use iDVD?)

    how does FCP turn a 24fps clip into 25fpc?
    You should not do this in FCP. Edit your 24p project and export it as it is.
    Then you can take that master file, either to a facility that offers real time hardware based standards conversion, or do it in software -which will take quite a while.
    Software standards converters include JES Deinterlacer (free) or Natress Standards Conversion ($100). JES will do a decent job but in the end, you get what you pay for.
    Compressor will do it too, but it takes ages and I think the result is not really worth it. If you do choose to convert, have it done properly by folks who know what they are doing. It's not a good stage in the workflow to start trying to cut costs.

  • Upgrade to 10.5.7 and now i get 1080/24p on tv??

    I was hesitant to upgrade to 10.5.7 considering all the issues specifically centered around the screen issues since id already had problems hooking up my hdtv and detecting proper settings. i finally made the jump yesterday, and lo and behold , instead of my tv reporting 1080p simply, it now reports 1080/24p!!
    this is all well and good, except the slight problem, if i can call it that, is that i noticed the mouse has suddenly gotten very sensitive, even though ive notched down the sensitivity, and it seems a bit erratic.
    secondly, ive noticed when watching tv shows through my mini, i now have audio/video sync issues. i realize thats probably because the tv is now internally converting all video to 24p, while sound is still synced with 30/60hz. any idea how to fix this? the wierd thing is i can no longer find a 1080p output option, its either 1920x1080 at interlaced, which will not cut it, or 1920x1080@24hz.
    anybody else seeing this? i havent read anything about this yet.

  • Importing 1080/24p sequence into DVD Studio Pro 4

    Perhaps the answer here is as simple as "DVD Studio Pro doesn't do Blu-ray." In any event, I recently got a Sony HXR-NX5U, which, among its many functions, shoots 1080 at 24p, 30p and 60i. Following these instructions from Ken Stone (http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/burn_br_mac_superdrivestone.html), I was able to output a 1080/24p movie and burn it to the hybrid format he describes, which plays fine on my PlayStation 3.
    However, when I try and bring the files that were created as a result of the "Share" command in FCP 7.0.3 (which are an ac3 file and an H.264 file), DVD Studio Pro will not recognize the H.264 video file and says that it is invalid. I'm assuming that the "Share" command creates these files via Compressor... if I'm wrong, please let me know.
    However, if I just do a straight export of my 1080/24p timeline as a QuickTime movie, then DVD Studio Pro will accept the files, marking it with a "yellow" indictator, indicating that it needs to be processed.
    What I'm wondering is... is there a way to export using Compressor so that DVD Studio Pro will accept the files? If I just do a straight export from the FCP timeline as a QuickTime movie and let DVD Studio Pro do the encoding, will it remain 24p?
    Bear in mind I'm not trying to burn a blu-ray disc.

    DVD SP does't do Blu-Ray.
    If you have time to kill, do a search on the forum for hours of entertaining reading on this subject.
    To create a DVD, use Compressor to generate the m2v and ac3 files needed by DVDSP to author a DVD.
    Again, a search of this forum will turn up hundreds of threads - most of which are restating the process for authoring that is spelled out in the manual.

  • Need to edit 1080 24p 7D footage and 50i SD XL2 footage in same timeline.

    Any help would be appreciated. Editing using latest Final Cut Studio on a Mac Pro and a Mac Book Pro.
    I have Canon 7D 1080 24p footage and 50i SD 16:9 Canon XL2 footage to edit together in the same timeline.
    Outputting as an SD DVD. I'm working with PAL all the time. I was under the impression that 24p was PAL, but have been told that 24p is NTSC.
    I convert the 7D footage to Pro Res LT. Then what do you suggest?
    Do I use Compressor or Cinema Tools to "conform" the 24p to 25p? And then work in an SD timeline suited for the 50i footage? Would I be automatically making the 7D footage SD if I move it into the SD timeline? Thanks.

    In case any one needs the answer to this in the future, I think I've stumbled upon the solution elsewhere.
    Change the 7D footage to Pro Res LT. Using Cinema Tools, convert it to 25p. Drop the 25p footage into a Final Cut timeline that is set up for the 50i footage. I haven't tried it yet, but will.

  • 1080 @ 24p to NTSC

    Hi we are making an animated TV series in 1080 @ 24p.
    After our NTSC 29.97 pulldowns, the duration of our show becomes longer; thus we need to cut the timeline to 23:58.16 (in FCP) in order to achieve 24:00:00 at 29.97.
    First of all, is this normal? Shouldn't the pulldown keep the duration more or less the same?
    Secondly, what percentage of retiming control (in Compressor) should we use to get our 24 to the duration of the 29.97?

  • Dropped frames from XDCAM EX HD (1080/24p) - Seems like a bug in FCP 6.

    We're editing XDCAM EX HD (1080/24p) using the built in easy setup and dedicated built in drives as scratch disks. We have run all software updates and have the latest builds of final cut...
    We keep on experiencing dropped frames on playback, but only on our NEW 8 core Mac Pro not on any of our other Mac's including our MacBook's.
    Through a painful process of elimination, we found out that if you go to System Settings/Playback Control and you switch Gamma Correction from Accurate to Approximate it solves the problem. We have no idea why and would love an answer from Apple on this.
    Moreover is this a bug or do we need to amend something on our system. As a note we've already matched pairs on the RAM and done all the other obvious stuff.

    Having the same issue with same format footage (1080/24p), the proposed solution works (a little). I can definitely playback a longer duration but it still drops frames. Even when putting a filter on and rendering it still drops frames.

  • 10 bit 1080/24P HD, downconvert in software?

    I have 10 bit HD (from D5) 1080/24P material on a firewire drive for editing on a MetaSan dual 2.5 (8G RAM). Running FCP 5.02 with 10.4. It was encoded into a Blackmagic codec quicktime.
    Material is supplied from telecine on FW drive (only have SD Kona card on system.)
    I can't view material clearly so must downconvert. Can I downrez to DVCPRO-HD in software using Compressor?
    I'm in over my head right now. My last project was DVCPROHD and it went fast and well. This 10 bit work flow is sending out warning lights.
    This is for a feature trailer, need to show to investors in boardroom on HD Plasma or DLP.

    Here's a test for you and them to run.
    Take a series of respresentative clips. Wide gamut, fast action, brilliant colors, b&w, and so on.
    Bring each clip into Compressor and generate a ProRes4444, ProResHQ, ProRes standard and ProResLT version.
    Import all the clips into FCP and put the original 10 bit clip on the timeline then superimpose each version of the ProRes conversion using the Difference Matte. What do you see?
    Now put each clip through the scopes and compare. What do you see?
    Now play each on a broadcast reference monitor. What do you see?
    I'd be willing to bet std ProRes will be fine. The bigger question is how much support Apple will be offering for ProRes as a legacy codec in 10-15 years.

  • 1080 24p footage ready for youtube. best settings?

    I've got a video that was shot in 1080 24p in Apple ProRess 422
    i'm ready to send it to youtube. what's the best way to get it from my timeline to youtube with having the best quality and smallest size?
    i've tried using Quicktime Conversion for h.264 out of final cut with multipass and best quality with automatic kbps setting.
    is there something else i should do? should i send to compressor? is there another setting? a better kbps setting i should use?
    because when i use my settings as i mentioned above, i love the quality, it's just my videos are still very large (4 minutes is about 2.7GB's) and it takes forever to export and upload to youtube

    I'm no expert here but i have just sent a video to youtube a very crude way but it looks pretty good and it was 1080.
    Select your sequence then FILE-EXPORT-QUICKTIME MOVIE
    Once its on the desktop open the movie using Quicktime X, on the playback bar there is a little arrow icon, click this and there is an option to export to youtube, enter your user name and password and your away.
    My movie took about 1.5hrs to upload.
    Not an ideal solution but a quick and dirty way of getting your HD stuff onto youtube looking fairly decent !

  • Using 24p footage and 60i footage together?

    I am working on a project that will combine 24p footage and 60i footage. What would be the best way to go about combining these two. It's for a short that is shot similar to Cloverfield. I want to use 60i footage for the hand held footage shoot by the actors who are capturing their experience. I'd prefer to have that footage shot on 24p as well and degrade the quality in post, but I don't want to run the risk of them dropping my DVX100a and destroying it. I don't have any experience with 60i, or combining two kinds of footage, so advice is much appreciated!

    Well, I certainly can't speak for all of these cameras, but I have played around with some of this "30p over 60i" footage -- but most of this was from HDV cameras, not AVCHD. Avoid if you can. Basically, the luma is progressive and the chroma is interlaced.
    I have a function (it's actually part of the dv2film and hd2sd functions) that will deinterlace only the chroma, so can recover greatly true progressive output... but this is an unmitigated a pain in the *** to deal with all the time, and you certainly lose at least a little chroma resolution. Avoid :)

    I have FCP v5.1.4 and I'm about to buy a Sony HDV camera that can record in 1080 24p. I'm not sure which codec to use when editing, because I want to use 24p and edit in 24p, but I've heard that there are problems that may arise when editing in 24p. Is it possible to capture the video in DVCPro HD and edit that way without a problem?
