Converting 24 - 25fps

I shot a music video on a Canon 5D mark II at 23.98 edited and completed in final cut pro until I was left with a Pro res 422 master.
I've now been asked for a 25fps version.
I've tried doing a conversion in Compressor but I got strange ghosting in the frame rate I also did one in cinema tools but the whole thing was speeded up by about 20 secs.
Can someone give me a workflow breakdown on how to do this without it shrinking the running time, knocking it out of sync or ghosting the image.
Thanks.

If you want good conversion, you need to take it to a post facility with a Terranex or other high end converter. This is an odd frame rate to convert...STANDARDS conversion. I'm having to do the same thing...but 29.97 to 25fps.

  • How do I convert a 25fps shot film into a 1920x1080px@50fps quicktime/photojpeg or h.264

    Hello,
I shot a film with a canon 5d mark II (25fps) and cut it on Final Cut Pro. Now I've been told, they need 920x1080px@50fps as quicktime/photojpeg or h.264 with high Bitrate. How do I convert my video into that using either Final Cut or Compressor or both?
    Thanks

In the Compressor Inspector, in the Video tab, under Video Properties, you can change the size. There is a Change QuickTime Settings button where you can change frame rate.

  • How do I convert 1080i 25fps to 720p 50fps

Hi. Most of my footage is 720p 50fps. However, a small portion of the job is 1080i 25fps. I was thinking to convert the 1080i footage in media encoder(h.264) 720p 50fps. Just so I can import all the footage into the same timeline. I thought I would make it to what most of the video looks like? Is there a better way of doing this?

You do not need to transcode the 1080 footage first. You can simply add it to the 720 sequence. Then right-click the 1080 clips in the Timeline and select Scale to Frame Size--or, if you have the current version, which is 7.2.2, the new Set to Frame Size option.

  • 30fps Converted to 25fps. New Duration 20% Longer But Audio Sounds OK???

Could be a Compressor or FCP question!
I have some 1280x720p M-JPEG footage recorded at 30fps from a still camera and unfortunately I live in PAL country.
So I made 2 ProRes presets in Compressor to "alter" the footage to 25fps. The Frame Control settings are shown below.
Note the "Rate Conversion" details at the bottom of each preset.
The first one results in a 20% increase in the duration whilst the second one plays back in the original video's time.
The second one takes more than 10 times longer than the original video to convert, whilst the first one takes around 65% of the original video's time to convert.
Now here is the odd thing!
The 20% extended video made quickly with the first preset SOUNDS OK !
I was expecting the dialogue to sound dreadfully slow with a noticeable lowering of the voice pitch.
In fact, only when I compare it to the original very carefully, do I detect the slightest hint of it being slower.
Any person listening normally would be unaware it had been slowed down.
    As for the pitch . . . . . . that is absolutely perfect . . . . . . exactly the same as the original.
Can anyone explain these peculiar results or am I simply hallucinating?
Incidentally, I can detect a slight slowing of the action, but as it doesn't have a serious effect for the type of video I shoot, I think I will stick with the quick conversion for most subjects.

Hi, could You please recommend me the best way to convert native 30p from Canon 5D MarkII,

  • Converting 50fps 5.1 Audio AVCHD/MTS files to 5.1 Audio at 25fps ProRes

I'm having a bit of a problem finding a way to convert the files from my Panasonic camcorders to edit in FCP 7.
At the moment, I have been using two applications to convert the AVCHD files, Toast and ClipWrap but neither of these applications seems to do what I need them to do for some projects (some projects do not require the 5.1 audio).
The AVCHD files are 50fps (camera fixed) with 5.1 audio and the particular projects I am working on are 25fps and I would like access to all the 5.1 channels for audio mixing down to stereo but I need one of the 5.1 channels in particular.
If I use ClipWrap, I get 5.1 audio but the 50fps is converted to 25fps by slowing the video down by 50%.
If I use Toast, I get proper 25fps video (by eliminating every other frame) but the audio is two channel stereo. I can actually see the options for multichannel audio but they are greyed out.
Can anybody please tell me how I can get what I need, please?
Either 25fps video at 100% speed using ClipWrap
    or
    5.1 audio using Toast
    or
Recommend another application which does this.
I have searched online for other applications but the trials I have done have all been limited to stereo output even though they are recognised the 5.1 audio in the input file.
    Cheers

That may seem like an option but I have been using FCP for almost 15 years. I like the workflow and although I would never claim to be anything even close to an expert, I know my way around sufficiently to do what I need to do.
I have tried FCP X - I didn't just open it up and look at it, I did an eight hour training course in two parts with hands on tutorial. I found the whole process extremely painful and counterintuitive. It was like trying to use iMovie again (which I once had to do in order to train young people in rudimentary editing).
Yes, I may be a stick in the mud but I am not starting out fresh from university on a filmmaking odyssey, nowadays, I'm more or less making films for the enjoyment and FCP X does not give me any joy.
I can't remember every item on the list but when I first started shooting in HD, I pondered switching to Premiere and found a dozen or so fundamental problems which would affect the way I am used to working and so stuck with the creature with which I was familiar. There is, and never was, anything wrong with FCP 7 which ever caused me any real and lasting problems until I discovered this anomaly. There is a long and tedious workaround which involves converting the media twice if I need the 5.1 audio but I would not have thought it would be such a problem for a converting application to include all audio channels in its output.

  • How do I convert from PAL to NTSC in compressor?

I have a project I converted from mp4 file to Apple Pro Res to edit it in FCP.  I exported using Compressor and tried to import the files to DVD Studio Pro.  It said it can't put PAL files into an NTSC project.  I didn't even realize it was filmed in PAL (yes, I have the rights to use the footage).  How do I convert the files from PAL to put it into FCP...in Compressor?  If so, how?  Thanks for any help!

To  convert the 25fps PAL file to a 29.97fps file staying within the ProRes codec:
    • Open up compressor. In the Settings window select: Apple>Formats>Quicktime>ProRes 422
    • Select the "Duplicate Selected Setting" icon in the upper left of the Settings window
    • This creates duplicate of the preset that you can edit
    • Select the preset copy and, in Inspector, give it a new name (something like ProRes PAL>NTSC)
    • In Encoder>Video Settings>Frame rate - and change the frame rate to 29.97
    • In Frame Controls> turn them on and set Resize Filter and Rate Conversion to BETTER.  (If so set them to BEST, be prepared for a long wait)
    • In the Geometry tab, set the Frame Size to 720x480 (you don't say if the file is 16:9 or 4:3)
    • Submit the file and go have dinner. Depending on the length of the file, it may take hours.
    Have fun.

  • PAL to NTSC simple solution

I realise there are probably many threads discussing this topic but I have just finished converting a 25fps movie to 23.98fps i.e PAL to NTSC and found after a lot of trial and error and trying an array of recommended methods that the simplest and best result is this:
    1. Export your movie as a self contained clip from FCP and the audio as an .aiff
    2. Open the clip in Cinema Tools and conform it from 25fps to 23.98fps
    3. Open a new project in FCP and import the clip and the .aiff
    4. Double click the clip within the Browser and adjust its speed to 104.165 with frame blending off which will adjust the clips lenght to the same exact lenght of the original PAL file and the .aiff
    5. Put the video clip onto a time line with the same settings as the clip along with the .aiff audio
This final clip will now have a frame rate of 23.98 and the exact lenght of the original PAL clip with the original audio in sync.
For some peculiar reason the running time of the movie shown in the timeline is not the same as that shown in the browser but when you export it for dvd using compressor the resulting m2v is the correct lenght. You must also export the audio from the new timeline to go on the dvd as either another .aiff or a dolby digital.
There are some odd things going on with the stated running times of everything but the end result is correct.

    I'm with Michael on this.
I use Graeme Natress's Standards Converter for this within FCP if it is a small project and use Compressor feeding Qmaster clusters for something more lengthy.
Clusters make a huge difference in the performance of Compressor. I have Clusters set up on machines running 10.6.8, 10.7.5 and 10.8.3 so I know it works on the range of current OSX versions.
Digital Rebellion has a good write-up on how to set up Qmaster.
    Good luck,

  • How to make a DVD compatible with USA televisions

I sent a DVD to a friend in USA made with iDVD in Spain . He can not see on the tv , what can we do ?

    Hi
One can do this in better or worse ways.
Fastest and best (as I see it) is to use VLC on a Mac or PC. As previously said.
Bad way is to make a PAL movie and drop this into a NTSC iDVD project.
    - YES iDVD will convert it into NTSC - BUT the resulting DVD will play very bad and jumpy !
    - I do my projects (most oftennin PAL) and then Export them as full quality QuickTime.mov
    - Then I use JES_Deinterlacer (free on Internet) to convert from 25fps to 29.97fps
    - This movie I drop into a NTSC iDVD project. AND the resulting DVDs plays very well in USA !
    I use Verbatim DVD-R
I burn at slowest possibly speed - to get as few burn errors possibly - YES IT DO MATTERS !

  • Jerky motion in iMovie '08

    Hi,
Am making a short movie which consists mostly of photos but with some short videos intercut. I am also synching to a pre-recorded track. The whole movie plays perfectly until later in, about 2 minutes in, but then some photos play with a short jerk during a Ken Burns effect. All the photos from the begining have the Ken Burns but play without the jerkiness, it's just a few photos, and always the same ones.
Any suggestions or ideas that may help this would be appreciated. Thanks,
    Joseph

    Hi
    No I don't know - but I figure.
    with some short videos intercut
One very common origin to jerky/stuttering video is when video is recorded in one standard and the video or iDVD project is set in another.
iMovie'08 and 09 can handle PAL 25fps and NTSC 29.97 (one must specify and keep to this) - If mixed material one need to use another program to convert so that same standard can be kept trough out the project.
    iMovie'11 can handle 24fps too.
(most probably i50 and i60 too)
So if video is recorded with a still dgital Camera (most of them can record video) the they usually records in 30fps. And if movie project is set to PAL 25fps jerkieness would be the result.
I use JES_Deinterlacer to convert my 25fps to 29.97fps when making NTSC DVDs for US relatives.

  • Import from Olympus E-PL1?

How do I adjust my easy setup before importing from my Olympus E-PL1 camera? The manual says it's a HD(720p)camera, but I can't find a good setting. The movies look good in the viewer but blurry and bad after exporting.
    Any tips?

Wait. I just realized a little problem. You're in Norway. This camera shoots in a non-standard frame rate, one used neither in North America or Europe. I assumed because the camera shoots 30fps, you'd want to convert to 29.97, which is the frame rate used in North America and Japan. However, if you want to use your video on a television set, you'd need to convert to 25fps. This is a problem. 30fps to 29.97fps is basically the same frame rate, just a touch slower. 30 to 25 means frame interpolation has to be done and this is not so easy and doesn't always look so great. So before we get into what you use in FCE you'll need to figure out where you're going with this video. In FCE you'd use an easey setp that matched your media HDV AIC 720p30 (actually 29.97) or 720p25.

  • PAL -  NTSC frame rate not changing

I'm using compressor for the first time (version 2.0.1) and I'm trying to do a standards conversion of PAL to NTSC.
I selected advance format conversion DV NTSC. It works fine except the frame rate is left at 25 fps even though the inspector had 29.97 in it before I submitted. I've tried it a few times now but the frame rate isn't changing to NTSC rates.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Mike

How are you determining the ending framerate (what utility or method)?
Also, the QuickTime Player always uses a 30fps counter, thus it can be a little misleading if you go simply by the head position counter.
As for using Compressor 2 to do standards conversion, unless you explicitly turn on the new Frame Controls feature and use the Rate Conversion option you will just get resizing and frame duplication when you convert from 25fps PAL to 29.97 NTSC.
Perhaps, however, you two are using some other technique to determine framerate (I'm just looking at what the QuickTime Player reports and also by counting the actual displayed frames when I single-step the movie -- thus my original question). I've not done a lot of standards conversion, but I just tried to twice-convert a short NTSC video segment and it seemed to work fine when I reconverted from PAL back to the original NTSC. However, since I'm NTSC based I had to create my own PAL after starting from an NTSC original (probably not a completely valid test since Compressor is doing both conversions).
So, another question would be what is the source of your PAL video? I'm sure you did not "synthesize" it as I did, but maybe there is a conflict between your source and Compressor.
In any case, I'm using Compressor 2.0.1 and I just converted an NTSC clip to PAL and back again (PAL to NTSC) and the framerates seemed to work fine (using Compressor's Advanced Format Conversions presets). When I went from NTSC to PAL I ended up with a 25fps movie that had dropped frames from the original. Then, when I went from PAL to NTSC I ended up with a 29.97fps movie that had frame duplicates (unless I explicitly use the Frame Controls -- Rate Conversion option and then with the higher quality options I get newly generated frames using Compressor's so-called optical flow technology).
Also, Mike, your tag line indicates that you are using Mac OS X 10.2.X, but that can't be the case if you are using Compressor 2 since it requires QT7 which is only available on 10.3.9 and 10.4.X.

  • Support for 1080p50 .mts?

After purchasing a Panasonic HDC-SD900, filing in 1080p50 and then finding that getting such footage into iMovie '11 is a convoluted process, I thought I'd ask here: will Final Cut Express might make my life any easier?
In particular, I want my resulting movies to be exported to a Blu-ray standard such as 1080p24 or 1080i50 without the appaling "judder" I get when exporting from iMovie '11.  I also would like to be able to preserve the 5.1 surround sound my camera uses.
    Any advice?

Neither Final Cut Pro nor Final Cut Pro support this media for direct ingest. For FCE you can do a two-step process, transcode to the Apple Intermediate Codec using ClipWrap2 and then convert to 25fps using MPEG Streamclip. In FCP you can simply transcode to ProRes using ClipWrap2 and edit in a 50fps sequence.

  • HDV PAL to HDV NTSC to DVD, best conversion method?

I'm cutting a feature doc shot in HDV PAL. What would you recommend the most efficient way to turn out an HDV NTSC master (to produce a DVD) for the North American market?
I'm far from any post production house, in the wilds of New Zealand. Ideally I want to be able to do the conversions using the FCP Studio setup ... but need to be able to promise my producers that the end result will be top quality. Is this a Nattress question? Like, for instance, does a Nattress conversion give the same quality result as a hardware conversion, tape to tape?
I'm thinking that if I can make a straight FCP\Nattress? conversion and end up with TWO HDV masters, PAL and NTSC. And then take each HDV master and produce two separate MPEG2's for the two DVD masters, using Compressor and DVD Pro ... then that might be the easiest way to go.
If there is a better (even though more expensive way to go, other than a $900 an hour pp studio in L.A.), I want to be able to suggest that to the producers also. Let them choose...
    Thank you,
    Ben

    Hi Ben,
Why do you try to conform to 24 fps if you want to convert PAL (25fps) to NTSC (30fps) ?
You also doesn't need to de-interlaced video, do you? What for ?
Is it for a theatre release or a television ?
Maybe I didn't understand your problem...
I've never done it but I would suggest to try to conform your quicktime file like that in Cinema Tools:
    Open file
    Conform
    29,97
    or
    30
I think one is for frop frame and the other one is for non-drop but I don't know which one, I am not familiar with NTSC either.
If it's for television you should choose drop frame I think to have the right lenght.
There is also Reverse Telecine that you can use for NTSC but overall, I would suggest that you take a deep look into Cinema Tools help/manual because it's really well done and I'm quite sure you'll fine all your answers in it.

  • How to synchronize audio and film

I have digitized several analoge films without any problem in I movie. Sudenly my audio is not running at the smane speed as the film. Audio is running faster.
    How can i synchronize that??

    Hi
Sudenly my audio is not running at the smane speed as the film.
Can it be so that material used is in one frame rate (fps = frames per second) and Your movie project in another ?
    • NTSC = 29.97fps (standard in USA (and more) and on many Cameras)
    • PAL = 25fps (standard in EU (and more))
Same goes for 50i and 50p and 60i and 60p.
iMovie doesn't handle 50p or 60p as standard (as far as I know) but material need to be converted to 50i or 60i first.
    Then I use JES_Deinterlacer to convert from 25fps to 29.97fps - when I need to do a NTSC-project.
fps in Your project You see here (in Project window)
first ona at 24 bildrutor = 24fps (frames per second) (why it became this I wonder )
    next 30fps (NTSC)
    last 25fps (PAL)
Mixing material with different fps - can in MY CASES result in Audio (out of sync./drift)
