Converting 24p to NTSC 30 fps with existing footage already captured

Working on a project that should have come to me downconverted to NTSC 30fps. I already have footage that was shot DVCPro 24p and have started working (selecting) with the footage. We would like to shoot our remaining footage downconverted in-camera to NTSC 30fps.
So - I'm curious if FCP allows you to convert material that's already been captured.
Thanks
G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

You'd need to use the Standards Converter from www.nattress.com.
$100 but worth it. It also converters 30 to 24, and PAL to NTSC, and vise versa.

  • NTSC camcorder with PAL footage

I have a Sony DCR-TRV950 camcorder which is a NTSC version. I have recordings that where made on a PAL camcorder. Final cut does not receive a picture. At this point you may be thinking yes and it won't, but the thing is I have managed it using Adobe Premier Pro. I still have this footage and moved it into Final cut which made a comment that the footage would be better quality if I got Final cut to move in the footage. Is this true and if it is, is there a way of getting FC to get the footage?

While your camera does support playback of PAL tapes its not true PAL its going to be PAL60.
It may be FCP does not see this as a valid or true format on log and capture.
Your best bet is either have the tape converted to NTSC prior to starting the edit or hire a deck that does playback true PAL digitise from this and edit and convert the final edit to NTSC.
Of course I am assuming you want an NTSC programme in the end.
If not working with PAL60 is not really advisable and you should hire the deck to digitise the footage in the first place anyway.

  • Auto Create EVENTS with existing library (already imported)

Had an "issue" a while back where I lost all my photos. It has since been corrected via Data Rescue but... I must have imported the found photos in a manner that did not allow for iPhoto 08 to auto-create events. So I have one big event with 15,000 plus photos in it.
Is there any option to have iPhoto create new events automatically from these photos based on picture date? New imports are fine.
Most of the pictures have the correct exif data....
    Thanks

Except you will have 15000 duplicates
    1 - quit iPhoto,
2 - delete your iPhoto preferences,
3 - drag the iPhoto library to the desktop (this will be a backup),
    4 - start iPhoto,
5 - reset the preferences including the split items imported from the finder,
6 - and drag the originals folder from the iPhoto library on the desktop onto the running iPhoto program - this will import all of your originals (and hopefully split them into events) into a new library - after you check it you can delete the one on your desktop (or archive it as a backup )

  • A way to get 720p at 60 fps with iMovie 6

I wanted to produce a movie at 720p and 60 fps for YouTube. The high sample rate was essential for my application. I wanted to use iMovie 6 since the source material needed to be edited. I tried importing progressive 60 fps footage into iMovie 6, but it got reduced to 30 fps. I got around the problem by first using JES Deinterlacer (version 3.8.4) to double the duration of the source footage (with the selections "standards conversion," "custom," and "telecine"), which reduced it to 30 fps. After editing in iMovie 6, I exported to full quality and then used JES Deinterlacer to convert back to 60 fps. I'm posting this information in case it might be of use to someone else.

Thanks for doing so - such feedback is always useful to know about!

  • Converting PAL to NTSC in FCP

How do I convert PAL to NTSC in FCP?

    Hi
May be my Amateuristic way can be of help ?
PAL to NTSC or NTSC to PAL
    A. Copying commercial DVDs - No Not possibly at all - Not even legal to discuss.
    B. Home made DVDs (DVDs without copy protection)
    C. Movies from iMovie or FinalCut
    • Save as full quality QuickTime .mov and convert this with JES_Deinterlacer  (free on internet)
    NTSC ---> PAL.
    • Most often not necessary - Most stand alone PAL DVD-players playback NTSC
(if TV is old in BL/W)
    PAL ---> NTSC.
    • If played on Mac - not necessary AT ALL
    • If on NTSC DVD-player - CONVERSION IS NEEDED - nearly no Stand alone NTSC-DVD-players
    playback PAL at all.
To do this You need to convert the PAL DVD to streaming.DV or full quality QuickTime .mov
    • I use Roxio Toast™ to do this (There are no free converter)
    • JES_Deinterlacer  (free on internet) to convert to NTSC
    • Set up an NTSC project (29.97fps or 30) in iDVD and import then burn
    I burn to
    • Verbatim DVD-R
    • Set down burn speed in iDVD to x1 or x4 recommended by many
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk before burning (IMPORTANT)
PAL is 25 fps and an analog TV standard of 625 lines
NTSC is 29.97 fps and 520 lines
NTSC (29.97fps) 520 lines - about 640x480 pixels (square) 720x480 rectangular (narrow) pixels
PAL  (25 fps)   625   lines - about 768x576 pixels (square) 720x576 rectangular (narrow) pixels
to use a photo 702x480 resp 576 then add 9 pixels on each side to add together as 720
If iDVD hangs on PAL or NTSC.
    Bengt W wrote
Deleting iDVD pref. file - should return You into NTSC mode.
Yes iDVD can switch to PAL - BUT as You see with a rather lousy result.
    a. Need to convert to PAL - most often not - Most PAL-player can playback NTSC
and on a fairly new TV in color. (old TV in Bl/W)
(Other way around - from PAL to NTSC most often a must - few NTSC-player can use PAL)
    b. IF MUST - then use JES_Deinterlacer to do this conversion - so much better and free.
My list on this (or rather PAL --> NTSC - just think the other way around)
I have to send it overseas
That too can be a problem. As USA = NTSC = 29.97fps and EU = PAL = 25fps.
DO Not let iMovie or iDVD do this conversion from one to the other - Result will be Very
    BAD
I save the movie as a full quality QuickTime .mov file then I use JES_Deinterlacer to do the conversion - then I cont. in iMovie or iDVD with project set accordingly.
JES_Deinterlacer is free on Internet and there are Pro applications but not that much better and costs are astronomical.
    PAL-DVDs - don't play in US
NTSC-DVDs - usually plays well in EU
All plays well on a Mac - What ever.

Thank you SDMacuser. I dumped all the plist icons with no result, and was getting pretty plist off when it occurred to me to delete all the previous dvd.proj files. Bingo. That did the trick. So thank you for all your help and the additional information you provided.

  • Working with 48fps footage in Premiere CC

    Hi there,
I am currently working on a 24fps project with R3D footage in Premiere.
Some of the footage for a new sequence I am working on was shot at 48fps (and will need to be exported to 24fps while retaining 48fps' slow motion effect) and I am unsure how to go about this.
Can Premiere play back in the program monitor at 48fps? Can it interpret/render 48fps footage to export to 24fps while retaining the original attributes of the 48fps footage? Or would I need to use additional software to accomplish this?
Ideally I would like to be able to edit/playback the footage at the correct frame rate within Premiere as I need to synchronise it with music to see which segments of the clips I have will work best.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

If I'm understanding you right. Your R3D footage is a baseline of 24fps (or 23.976fps) but was overcranked on the camera to 48fps, meaning it should playback half the speed of realtime. I don't know much about camera settings but normally the camera processes this internally and then spits it out at 24fps but was actually overcranked for slow-motion. Arri Alexa does this internally. I have worked on R3D slow-mo before and I know it processes it internally also.
Unless the red camera has a setting to turn that off I do not know. The important part is; is the footage at 24fps or 48fps BASELINE and how much excess fps was set to overcrank in the camera settings? (i.e was it set to 'squeeze' 48fps into 24fps)? Normally premiere pro cc is good at reading the footage's baseline fps value in the browser.
But to interpret footage inside of premiere pro cc, its easy - all you do is bring in your footage into the browser, then right click on it, go to modify then interpret footage; in the menu at the top, change the fps value interpretation from 48fps to 24fps (or whatever baseline you want) and then click ok. Drop the clip onto a timeline matching the rest of your baseline fps and it should be slow-mo. You should see the value of the clip's timecode length increase double in the browser metadata.
Hope that helps, let me know how it goes. Be useful if you can take screen grabs of the metadata so we can see what your looking at.

  • How to convert DVDs (PAL, NTSC) to mp4?

    Hello,
I would like to convert DVDs (PAL, NTSC) to mp4.
I have Adobe Premiere Pro CS3, but never used it.
I am looking for a easy to understand information how to do it step by step.
Maybe there are already how tos for this?
    PAL: 720 x 576, 25 fps
    NTSC: 720 x 480, 29 fps
    Thank you very much.
    Sandra

Oh, you need to learn the program first before you can export anything...
Get yourself a month of Lynda.com subscription and learn CS3.
Watch the Online Video Course Premiere Pro CS3 Essential Training
Adobe TV had a course for CS3 but they dropped that.

  • Stuttering playback with all footage. New CC 2014.1 install

I just installed CC 2014 on a mac. Still have CS6 too. I'm getting a very strange stuttering playback issue. Looks like 10 frames per second. then crashes. Cleared preffs and rebooted but didnt fix it. I have tried several types of footage and all plays back the same. Main footage is 24p C300.

    Hello Erik,
    Sorry you're having trouble.
Can you give us the specs of your Mac? Include info on RAM, CPU, drives, OS X version, GPU type and driver number.
Is this a new project or one you updated from an earlier version of Premiere Pro?
Here are some other things I'm recommending for Mac users for this version:
Sign out from Creative Cloud, restart Premiere Pro, then sign in
    Update any GPU drivers
Trash preferencesI read you already tried this.
Ensure Adobe preference files are set to read/write
    Delete media cache
    Remove plug-ins
If you have AMD GPUs, make sure CUDA is not installed
    Repair permissions
In Sequence Settings > Video Previews, change the codec to one that matches your footage
    Disconnect any third party hardware
    Reboot
Some users are reporting anomalies with certain footage. To fix it, they rename the folder the media files are in, then relink in Premiere Pro. You may want to try a test with a few clips rather than the whole project first.
Report back if anything here worked for you.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • CS4: Converting AVCHD to NTSC widescreen - narrow vertical bars

    Hey, folks.
We're shooting with a Panasonic AG-HMC70P which saves as 1080/60i AVCHD. My target format is NTSC DVD Widescreen (16:9).
Using the MPEG2-DVD format in Media Encoder and selecting Widescreen as the pixel aspect ratio, I get very narrow vertical bars on the left and right, i.e. it's clearly widescreen and not 4:3, but it's simply not filling the complete width of the screen when converting.
The properties of the imported .mts file report a pixel aspect ratio of 1.3333, versus the output format 1.2121, and I'm wondering if this is the source of the bars or there's something else that I'm not setting properly. I'm rather new to CS4, so cockpit error is highly likely here.
This is what properties reports on the imported source file:
    ==========================================
    Type: MPEG Movie
    File Size: 363.5 MB
    Image Size: 1440 x 1080
    Pixel Depth: 32
    Frame Rate: 29.97
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - compressed - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
    Total Duration: 00:03:59:15
Average Data Rate: 1.5 MB / second
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.3333
And here's what the resulting converted file with the vertical sidebars reports:
    =======================================================
    Type: MPEG Movie
    File Size: 10.4 MB
    Image Size: 720 x 480
    Pixel Depth: 32
    Frame Rate: 29.97
    Total Duration: 00;00;12;16
Average Data Rate: 852 KB / second
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.2121
(The target duration is shorter than the source because I'm testing and don't need to render the entire thing until I get it right.)
Been reading manuals, poking Google with a stick and trying various other forms of self education but have come up short. If any of you could point me in the right direction to properly convert AVCHD to NTSC widescreen, I'd be most grateful.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi, John.
Here's what I've learned thus far from Googling a bit. This seems to be a common issue, and the solution I've seen proposed (actually from a Vegas forum but the issue is the same) is to expand or crop the image. Taking that advice, I've cropped the top and bottom by 12 and it gets rid of the bars.
While this seems to work, I can't help but feel that this is a hack and that there's actually a "proper" way to deal with this. Surely we're not the only folks going from AVCHD to NTSC widescreen, so I'd be surprised if this was something that the Adobe devs simply missed.
So, while I have a momentary workaround, I'm still in search of the best way to address this issue. Hope my hack is helpful to you as well.

    1) How does Final Cut Pro 6 handle native HDV?
    Just like FC5.... no worries
    2) Is it beneficial to convert to Pro Res 422
Just like the Cineform codec you will benefit from an all i-frame codec when working with titles and graphics. I wouldn't recommend capturing native then converting to ProRez as this will take an extremely long time. Many have found editing native up until the compositing then dropping the sequence into a ProRez timeline to render. I prefer to uncompress the HDV with hardware into a capture card and transcode on capture in real time. Depending on the flavor of HDV and the equipment you use you can probably find a method for this. I shoot run & gun field work on to tape, then with the deck I can export via HDMI and together with another product from Convergent Design it is converted to HD-SDI in the a Kona LHe into FC. The benefit for me is the all digital decompression from 1440x1080 4:2:0 to a 1920x1080 4:2:2 uncompressed HD-SDI signal to use anyway I need to. As to which level of PR I can't comment but I have used the lower level and it looks great. As to raid setup I can recommend www.maxupgrades.com to help you add two - four more drives internally for unbelievable speed and expanded storage space you will want. The owner (Syed) will give you all the support you need to take advantage of the Mac Pro capabilities for a low cost high performance raid solution. Sounds like you have a great setup in mind, you may want to look into the Kona LHe capture card for capturing and monitoring and a Convergent Design product like the HD-Connect SI or MI depending on the deck you are using. If you need broadcast quality monitoring look into the Matrox MXO.
    Good Luck

  • Importing HD to mix with SD footage.

    Hi,
I just got an HDV camera today (Sony FX1) and I have a wedding to film this weekend, so I'm kind of learning as much as I can right now both about filming with this camera and editing in FCP. (I've used FCP for a couple of years, but this is my first experience with HD.)
I'm currently using Final Cut Pro HD 4.5.
I plan to shoot the wedding with the FX1 as my front (main) camera and film in HDV. I am going to use a Canon GL2 as a second camera.
When downconverting to SD for editing, it looks as though the video from the FX1 will have black bars at the top and bottom - something I don't mind, but my customer may have questions about.
    1) Will it be odd to mix footage from the FX1 that has been downconverted to DV with standard DV footage from the Canon GL2? Is there a way to import the footage (anamorphic, or whatever) so that there are no bars? Or, what is the correct setting for importing into FCP? Again, the bars don't bother me and if they have to be there, I can tell the customer that in the future I'll deliver it to them in HD.
    2) When I do edit for HD, will it look odd when switching between the FX1 and GL2? I don't mind the GL2 having bars on the side.
I guess my overall question is: What's the best way to import footage into FCP 4.5 when using HDV, and are the bars going to be there no matter what if I deliver the final video in standard DV? Again, the bars don't bother me, I'm just worried about how the customer will view this.
    Thanks,
    - John

I deal with similar issues with legacy 4x3 Beta SP mixed with HD quite a bit. I'm speculating, as I have not had to mix HDV and DV yet, but this is how I would try to deal with it were I in your shoes.
You can put both in a time line, but it will be painful to edit this way. One or the other will need to be rendered, and the actions you take with the footage will cause you to have to render again. And again. And again. No Joy.
I would look for a down convert with edge crop from the camera. This will chop off the edges of your HDV frame. As mentioned above, this might have a different name, but the key is to get footage that is of the same format (DV) and aspect ration (4x3) as your GL footage. Edit in DV.
You could import it 16x9 (black bars on top and bottom as you say) DV, blow it up so the black bars go away, and then slide it back and forth in the canvas with the motion controls in order to adjust the framing. Indeed you might have to do this if you did not shoot with 4x3 safety in mind. This is called "pan and scan" and it is how movies shot wide screen were squeezed onto our 4x3 TVs. If you have to do this your HDV footage will look quite poor. Down conversion and then scaling up is not good JuJu.
But, if you can't find a way to play the hdv footage out DV 4x3 center cut, or crop or whatever your camera calls it, you might be forced into this scenario.
You might try capturing the HDV the footage natively in a separate project. Drop this on a DV sequence. It will appear as a 16x9 image (black bars on the top and bottom.) Double click to load in the viewer and click the motion tab. The scale parameter will be at less than 100 percent. Scale it up until the black bars go away and your percentage is a round even number. Then export as self contained Quicktime movie. Name it HDV to 4x3DV. Reimport this into the DV project with your GL footage where you plan to edit.
This avoids the scaling issue and does the down convert in FCP. I suspect this will look better than the alternative, but I have not tried it.
    Hope this helps.
    Best,
    Tom

  • Editing with Standard Footage (DV) with Final Cut Pro X

It is possible to edit with Standard Footage (DV) with Final Cut Pro X? How? Thanks for your kind responses

The usual way is to make a new project and have the settings based on the video. You make the project, put a DV file in it, and the project properties will be set. If you don't have a DV file to use, you make a new project, use custom settings and select the format you want NTSC or PAL, anamorphic or 4:3.

  • Trying to edit a sequence with 1920x1080 footage and 720x480 footage

I am editing in Final Cut Pro 7. I have a sequence
    Frame Size 1020x1080
    Aspect Ratio
    HDTV 1080i 16:9
    Square
    AppleProRes 422 LT
    30 fps
with footage from the Canon 5d (AppleProRes 422 LT) 1920x1080 and I would like to add footage shot on miniDV tape on the Panasonic HVX200 (DV/DVCPRO 720x480, 29.97 fps). When I add the DV footage the aspect ratio is wrong. What do I need to be able to do to add this footage to my HD sequence and maintain the correct aspect ratio for the DV footage?
    Thank You.

Your DV footage uses a different (non-square) pixel aspect ratio. It needs to be "redistorted" to match a square pixel format.
Put the DV material in the timeline.
    double clic it
    go to the motion tab
    select "distort".
if the material is 4:3, the distort should be 12.5
If the material is 16:9, the distort should be -18.54
Of course, the DV material in its native pixel dimension will be less than 1/4 the HD screen.

Since we stay 2-3 weeks on two locations, one in Norway and one in Sweden (two different countries) we must use Mobile Broadband 4G, cables or fibre connections are useless for us, and we don't have it up to the houses. I have one mini router for each country, we bring with us iPhones, iPads, iMac, Apple TV, APExpress. When we pass the boarder I change the mini router, and the system continues working perfect on the WiFi, except the APExpress that needs to be reconfigured,  but then it works.
The APTC was difficult to make working as it would not accept to be in an existing network, but with good help from the Apple Community, LaPastenague, with forcing the TC connect to the APE with Ethernet cable in bridge mode, ref "My Time Capsule does not work with existing WiFi" from March 24, the problem was solved and all gadgets worked together in a perfect harmony, until we changed location.
Now, as I have my second WiFi network, and the APExspress is reconfigured, it's like the TC thinks, I am the base boss here, I am not taking orders from APE one more time, and it simply does not work, not only that, it fluctuates all the time.
I have a slight feeling that the two WiFi bands are making the trouble as during the configuration of the TC sometime the last figure 6 and 7 pops up, and that has something two do with the two different 2,4 and 5 GHZ bands
So, I am curious if you have any idea ?
I am thinking of returning the TC if I don't make it work now, but how do I delete all the data that's on it?

I can deal with the last question first and easily.
I am thinking of returning the TC if I don't make it work now, but how do I delete all the data that's on it?
Open the airport utility .. go to the disk tab and select erase.
When you select erase you will get mulitiple options.
Quick removes the file table but does not delete the files,, it takes 2min or less.
A Zero out data is the secure way,, by writing 0 ie low level drive format.
    It can take several hours..
7 pass will take a week.. not recommended..
35 pass erase is ridiculous.. it would take a month.. put an ax through the TC. It is quick and better.
Now, as I have my second WiFi network, and the APExspress is reconfigured, it's like the TC thinks, I am the base boss here, I am not taking orders from APE one more time, and it simply does not work, not only that, it fluctuates all the time.
The fact that it did work and has now failed might point to faulty unit.
The only way to tell is reset it properly to factory and start over.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Generally having multiple wireless AP should not cause problems.. but it is better to set channels manually.. so it doesn't go beserk rotating channels.
Remember to keep all names short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Sadly though the Apple routers have no logging now and no SNMP and almost nothing to help diagnose a problem, so if it continues .. take it back to apple.. they have given you no other method of fixing it.
