Converting 500GB video to PC-compatible format? OS 10.7.4

Hello -
I have ~500GB of resources for a short film on a mac-formatted drive. The resources are all in mac-compatible format (.mov; .jpeg & others). Is there any way to transfer these to another drive that is PC-compatible in PC-readable format?

OS X can only read NTFS. To write to an NTFS formatted drive you need to install third party software on your Mac. To avoid that, you can format the drive from the Windows computer as exFAT. OS X can both read and write that format. OS X can also format a drive as exFAT, but there seems to be some kind of incompatibility. Often, Windows users can't access a drive formatted as exFAT on a Mac, but have no problem if the formatting is done from Windows.
If you need the drive to remain NTFS, then you can purchase and install Paragon NTFS for Mac, or Tuxera for Mac. There used to be a paid and free version of Tuxera, but I don't think there's a free version anymore.
As far as the "incompatibility" issue, that's likely on the Windows side. By default, Windows XP does not support exFAT. You need to download and install an extension from Microsoft so XP can read/write/format that type of drive. So Windows users who say they can't read an exFAT drive are most likely on XP. So if you know the drive is going to an Win XP system, make sure they have this extension installed.

It is goog that you are all providing links here for converters but please avoid posting ones wherein it leads to direclty purchasing various products alone as this will be considered as spamming and is not allowed in the boards.
A fair number of the converters are freeware others are shareware and others let you trial the product either via a short test or watermark . I have posted some that are paid for as well as freeware but its like mentioning Apple IPhone would that also be classified as spam .Likewise again their are other apps for your phone if they are not freeware are they classed as spam if mentioned . Their seems to be no intention of spamming when asked about a product to do a particular job and the actual replys fall outside the definition of spamming .If the definition of spam on this board is mentioning paid for applications then the list is long starting with Windows and should not just be applied to this section .
But as their are so many views as what app to use paid for or free then i see the board as being safe from abuse .

Apple do not have their "own" format. You need to convert your DVDs to H.264 though.

Main@main aka MP@ML (main profile @ main level) is the conformance point for most
cable and satellite TV systems.
The station should be able to supply you with specific specs but more than likely they are conforming to what DG deliverable specs also are for MPG-2. One of the big things is in the Xtras tab of the setting.
You must have the YUV 4:2:2 box checked. The caveat being you will not be able to check the files playback on your system. To my knowledge QT/Mac has yet to come up with a way to playback these files(you can play them but there will be no picture).

Your source video file is probably muxed.
Neither QT Pro or iTunes has the ability to successfully encode a muxed video file with audio. You'll end up with video and no audio.
See: iPod plays video but not audio of some exported files.
You'll need to use some other third-party software to do the conversion. There's a handful of software available. Just search the forums and you'll find many titles mentioned.
Try MPEG Streamclip.

Downloading then converting FLAC files to Mac compatible formats

Hi all...
I've been downloading music from archive.org and I always go for the mp3 files for one simple reason: I just don't know how to deal with the FLAC files. I've read dozens of posts here and still don't get it... so I live with the compressed mp3's. When I do try to access the FLAC's they appear in my Safari browser window through the Quicktime plug in. But how do I get them to my hard drive.... and then convert to one of the Mac compatible formats. The latter part seems pretty straightforward with the proper converter. But I can't seem to get my hands on the FLAC's themselves.
So.... 2 questions: getting the FLAC's on board and .... a user friendly converter.

What kind of file is it really?
It's a FLAC file. FLAC is its own format just like mp3 or AAC. I don't know the details of what is going on with iTunes. Fluke is making iTunes do something it wasn't designed to do so it isn't too surprising that iTunes may not be able to identify the files correctly. Likewise, when you tried to open a FLAC file in a browser window that browser application contains a list of applications to try to use to open files of various formats, but that doesn't mean it will always work. I could tell my browser to open Excel spreadsheet files in iTunes, but that doesn't mean iTunes will be able to do that. Since FLAC is an audio format the browser probably is set to toss all audio files at Quicktime in the hopes it can open them. I don't know if FLAC plugins exist for browsers. I use VLC to play individual FLAC files, or COG if I have a bunch (both free). You ccould set up your browser to fire up VLC if you download a FLAC file.

I have alot of videos that are in DIVX and AVi format that itunes and my ipod will not accept. So how the heck do I convert them into an ipod friendly format? How can I convert a video to a playable format?

This is a combined iTunes / iPod touch question.
I downloaded a video to iTunes. It is in 3pg format and it and plays perfectly in iTunes. However, when I tried to sync it into the iPod touch, it stopped with the error message that the touch could not play that type of file. So I used the "Convert Selection for iPod/iPhone" selection in iTunes and converted it to m4p format. Although this was able to load into the touch, it is corrupted to the point of being impossible to view or listen to. By corrupted, I mean that it "stutters" at a rapid rate. How else might I load the 3pg file into the touch, or how else could I convert it into something that is listenable?

3pg is an odd format... That or I just never seen it before. :P
iTunes just ***** at converting videos. So far all videos I tried converting with iTunes have resulted in the same error you got.
You're better-off using 3rd party apps, and then copying to iTunes, and then copying to the iPod.
Unfortunately I don't know of any conversion programs for Windows.

When converting with handbrake, make sure to use the iPod preset for the out-put video.

How to convert a Video TS to a format I can copy to DVD

I have a DVD from a friend that he used Video TS format.
I was able to copy an image to a new DVD using Disk Utilites. It started to play the DVD but seconds later it said the DVD has a scratch or something else wrong. I then copied it using another DVD but again as I was test running, it errored out after a few seconds of running the video TS files.
I am not sure if there is a different way I can make an exact copy of this DVD.
It plays well when I insert it to my DVD Read Writer in my eMac. I can even run it straight from DVD Player, I can open the folder and runs fine.
But it stops and errors out only when doing an disk image in Disk Utility.
Anyone knows what I can do ?

You will certainly get lots of advices on programs to use here but I will share
a more brute and in my opinion higher quality way.
Use Your miniDV Camera. Connect it to a stand-alone DVD-player and copy
to a new miniDV tape. Use this in iMovie or FCE/P.
This way gives highest quality to my knowledg BUT DON'T be tempted to set
Your Camera into LP-mode. This will result with:
- jittery and jumpy clips
- 12-bit sound and because of this severe audio sync problems.
alt. Use a 90 min tape instead of 60 if You need to. They exist at least from
SONY (premium).

Hello, I finished editting a corporate video for client and they want to know if I can also send them an FLV format video.
Does anyone know how I can do this. I edited video in Final Cut Pro and used Compressor to export my final .mov video file.

The best method would be to use a Flash encoder to transcode the video. Do you have a Flash encoding application?
Another method would be to export an H.264 file of the video. When it's finished, change the file extension to .flv. It should play in later versions of Flash player, but won't play in older versions.

Minimal specs to convert 1080p Matroska to PS3-compatible format?

I installed Mediatomb today, mainly to get some 1080p goodness going on my Full HD TV, other than your 'regular' Blu-Ray. Since Mediatomb can also transcode on the fly, I set it up to convert Matroska data to MPEG2, which the PS3 'understands', so I can enjoy hi-def on my TV. There seems to be a problem however. My poor server (an AMD Athlon64 3000+ with 512 MB of RAM) doesn't seem up to the task of transcoding. As you can see from the screenshot (SSH'ed into my server) ffmpeg happily forks and starts eating almost all CPU time, while the RAM usage (afaict) seems to stay reasonable.
All of this happens over a 100 Mbit network, but since the resulting MPEG2 stream seems to be around 4-5 Mbps (whereas a Blu-Ray disc barely hits 20 Mbps) I'd think it is not a network problem - the router, btw, seems to idle happily if I may believe it:

So basically, I am wondering - I'd like to have a nice smooth picture, so what kind of hardware upgrade am I looking at? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I have some thoughts on your FFmpeg settings. You have the sameq switch. That will probably override the defaults of mpeg2video. FFmpeg will try to generate a video at the same bitrate as the original with this flag. Also, you have threads at 8. I'm guessing that your well in the area of diminishing returns. I think that with your processor FFmpeg may be able to transcode fast enough with the default 1. If not, I would try to go up by one until you get successful results. You have a frame rate of 23.97, so I'm assuming PAL. And last, are you using subtitles?
I would try something like this if you don't want subtitles. This should drop the bitrate down to a quality mpeg2 range. You may still need to set the -aspect and -s flags if the PSP doesn't like the input:
ffmpeg -i <your_video> -target pal-dvd -acodec copy -sn <whatever_your_output_is>
I've never seen FFmpeg spawn multiple processes before. It looks as if they're not using any CPU time though. It's strange all the same. Anyway, FFmpeg will try to use all of your available CPU cycles no matter how fast your machine is.

You may have different menu options than Half bit Bit Ah. The support page on how to do it is at https://support.apple.com/kb/TS1497. In part it says:
If you did not purchase videos from the iTunes Store, they are may not be in a format that you can play on your iPhone/iPod. In many cases, you can convert them to the correct format using iTunes or QuickTime.
* Using iTunes: Select a video and choose Advanced > Create iPod or iPhone Version
* Using Mac OS X v10.6: Open the video in QuickTime Player and choose Share > iTunes and then select the iPhone & iPod option.

Remember the three rules of computering:

2. Back up
3. and Back up again.
Get an external drive and back up your entire iPhoto Library! Right now!
What did you have on the DVD....iPhoto slideshow? iMovie of photos? Slideshow created in iDVD? Or, you burned the photos to the DVD-ROM area? If it is the latter, you can just open the ROM file and drag the photos out in their full resolution, so I am assuming that you did not do this.
If the photos are within an iDVD project, you can retrieve them, but you will lose significant resolution. You will need to use another application to extract the video. You can use Handbrake, or MPEG Streamclip to convert the video clips to DV format and you can 'Save Frame' as JPEG for each photo. However, the results are very grainy and not clear.

I have not used these...and I am skeptical of anything that says it can produce stunning photos, but they are not too expensive, $25 and might be worth it to you to retrieve your precious photos, even in cruder form.
