Converting a tape to MP3 using Garageband and my MacBook...

I'm having a problem converting some of my old books on tape to MP3 using my MacBook and my stereo. I have a cord with mini-plig attachments on both ends - one end is connected to the headphone out jack on my stereo and the other is connected to the mini-attachment next to the headphone jack on the MacBook. For whatever reason whenever I try to record all I get is distorted static.
Any ideas on how to proceed with this?

You may need to adjust the volume levels both on the stereo output and the MacBook Sound Input Level in System Preferences. You need to adjust it so that the signal isn't amplified too much resulting in clipping or distortion.
You should be able to preview the sound coming into the MacBook to adjust those levels until it has an acceptable sound quality.

  • Converting from WAV to MP3 using Creative MediaSou

I am trying to convert from WAV to MP3 using Creative Media Source Version 3.30.35. The program says it is converting the file to MP3 but when it has finished and I examine the properties it still says the file format is WAV. Can anyone shed any light on this, thanks?

It doesn't change the original file - it creates a new file in the new format. Check where your file destination is set to in the Audio Converter screen.

  • Using Garageband and I cannot hear previously recorded tracks on headphones.  Prefs are set to output on EMU0404 my audio device - this did work but now is not working.

I am using Garageband and I cannot hear the previously recorded tracks on my headphones.  I am using an audio input/output device, EMU0404 - this was previously working fine but stopped.  All cables check out OK and so does the unit - I have updated to the latest version of Garageband but this did not help.  Any suggestion?

    Hi Christoph,
I cannot see anything wrong with the EMU0404.  This is what puzzels me ... Garageband looks OK - headphones are OK - EMU looks OK.
    Thanks anyway

  • I'm trying to record audio into my iPad2 using GarageBand and an iRig, but I can't monitor my tracks at the same time as recording, meaning if I lay down a drum track and attempt to record guitar, I can't hear the drums while recording. Thoughts?

Hi, I have this exact same problem. I haven't been using an iRig, just a cheap USB-jack cable. I managed to do this with the first cable I bought, but since it broke I've been unable to find a replacement that allows me to hear the drums while recording. DId you manage to get over this issue? If so I would really like to know how. Thanks and best wishes.

  • I am using Garageband and saving my tunes as iTunes files but can´t find them in iTunes on my computer after syncing. Where are they?

I am using Garageband and saving my tunes as iTunes files but can´t find them in iTunes on my computer after syncing. Where are they?

My answer in the older thread is still valid
Maybe the "iTunes Music" folder is hidden.
Please open Terminal and issue the following command
    ls -ladO /epoche/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Music
you should get a line similar to this
    drwxrwxrwx  13 yourusername  staff  hidden 442 12 Mar 21:49 /epoche/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music
Numbers, date and time may differ.
If you see hidden then the folder is hidden. To unhide "iTunes Music", in Terminal issue the following command
    chflags nohidden /epoche/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Music

  • Convert Cassette Tapes to MP3's / CD's

I have about 200 tapes that I'm looking to convert into MP3's to ultimately burn to DVD's. I have an 2008 MP as well as a cassette player with an optical and analog line out. What's the best way to go about converting these tapes into a digital format? I would ultimately like to get each song on the cassette onto its own MP3 file, but I am fine with just having each tape as a single file. Any help is appreciated.

Well, as you can see by my equipment profile, I don't have a Mac Pro (yet), so unfortunately I can't speak to the quality level of the Mac Pro sound input. Either someone else will have to chime in or you could just give it a shot before buying the iMic. You may well get perfectly acceptable results just plugging straight into the MP's input.
The iMic is not a powered input; it's basically a conduit with, from what I understand, RIAA specs built into it which should offer better input than the Mac's input. AFAIK, most cassette decks require amplification for proper audio, so yours probably needs an amp inbetween the deck and the Mac/iMic in order to get the signal up to Line level.
Note that the iMic has a short cord, about 18 inches, and the cable feels a little more delicate than I'd like, so if you're going to use it, be sure it's in a place that's not going to be trafficked (sp?) at all. I don't use mine often, but I've never had a problem with it. (I bought mine because my headphone jack got damaged, and USB audio output from my mac was the only viable option. I've only recorded Vinyl LP using it, but testing mine through my G4's audio in vs. the iMic, the iMic gave me a significantly better recording.)
BTW, you should also check out other freeware/shareware apps for recording and editing. For example, some swear by Audacity and some simply use GarageBand if they already have iLife. I think the bottom line is that you should try your recordings in the cheapest possible fashion and see if the quality is ok with you, then buy iMic & software if you feel it's warranted.

  • How to convert audio tapes to MP3s?

I have some audio cassette tapes I want to convert to mp3s.
I have a tape recorder with line in, line out and a mic and headphones socket.
I have a jack adapter, which you can see in the photo below.
My imac 10.8.4 has a headphones port.
    I've got garageband and audacity.
In System Preferences, in Sound, I've got the Input tab on Internal Microphone; and the Output tab is on Internal Speakers.
I've tried all possible combinations with the jack adapter; but I can't get anything from the tape deck on to the mac.
    What am I doing wrong?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

You don't have a line in. Headphones are a line out. You can get various USB things that will take a line in. For instance

  • How can I get iTunes to convert my songs to MP3's again and not this AAC version. I need them in MP3's for my spicing software.

I use a spicing program that does not support iTunes.  I need to be able to convert my songs to MP3's.  I was able to do that from my old laptop but now that I have a new one and everything is converted to the new one I noticed that the MP3 is not on there it is now AAC.  Does anyone know how to convert to MP3's now?  I am in the same version of iTunes but it is not the same.  ODD and FUSTRATING!!

Change the default encoder to MP3. iTunes will then give you the option to convert any unprotected file in your library to MP3; this won't work with very old iTunes Store purchases.

  • Using garageband and an IO dock Footswitch

I want to use garageband on my Ipad with an Alessis IO doc and a footswitch.
But it doesnt look like it works, does anyone know if this is ever going to be added as a fix?

    Replying to my own post......
At this point looks like Alesis and ios 5 are incompatible.
Turns out if you are looking for it there is a bit of info on the web.
There is a disconnect between Apple and Alesis, some finger pointing etc...
In the end there is a disconnect and the consumer is paying the price.
I am within the return window with the retailer i purchased it from and I am taking it back.

  • Trying to convert wav file to mp3 using itunes?

Is there not an easier way to convert a wav file to an mp3.  I import my file or folder but it does not convert.  I have had to manually ask it to create an aac or aca out of each import.  shouldn't it convert audimatically when I import file or folder.  It did on the last version before this new update.  Please help.

If Garageband doesn't work, try Audacity.

  • How do you convert odm files to mp3 using itunes?

I am trying to download audio books from my public library and then install them on my  mp3 player. the file format is odm.
What is the process for doing this and what  software is required?

ODM files checked out from a library usually are copy-protected and cannot be converted, by iTunes or any other software. If so, they can only be played in a device that can run Overdrive's software. You'll need to consult with your library and possibly with Overdrive to learn if there are any options that would allow the audiobook to be played on a standard MP3 player.

  • Converting Illustrator to In Design using copy and paste

I designed a 32 page catalog in Adobe Illustrator but now I need to take it into In Design before I can make a booklet to send to the printer. I tried just copying everyone on an artboard and pasting into In Design but I can't get it to work. Suggestions?

Firstly - Illustrator was not the correct tool to create a 32 page catalogue.
InDesign should have been used from the start.
Secondly - you shouldn't have to create the booklet - that's the printers job. Even when I was in prepress we would have someones send 1000s of single page pdfs. It was no hassle to put all these together and make a booklet.
Thirdly - you could just PDFs of your Illustrator files and then use Acrobat Professional feature to Combine Files.
Fourthly - if you really had to you could File>Place all the documents into InDesign. Then make a PDF from there.
You'd still require Illustrator to edit the files.

  • Converting Tape to Mp3

So I know this is more of a hardware issue...I posted this problem in the Mac Forum and haven't gotten any responses. I'm hoping some Garageband users might have an answer?

when i tried that from my stereo it was waay distorted; i bought a non amplified cassette deck from radio shack and that works great (i think i paid $30 for it). i also record tapes into audacity instead of GB. you can probably find an old tape deck on craigslist or at a thrift store for nothing.

  • Urgent How to convert wav files into mp3?

Can anyone plz tell me how can i convert wav file into mp3 using JMF? tell me any sample programme, any method in JMF........ help me plz

Examples could be found on the JMF Solutions page.
Only I can say about mp3 through network - it's hardly possible. I recommend GSM for compression2transmit. It could be used via GSM content descriptor. I'm not sure, but I suppose MP3 is supported only for files, there's no MP3.RTP or such (if you want to transmit files, it should not cause any problems).
About JavaSound - it does not matter... You still need JMF to be installed on Client, and AppletCapture to be enabled. Futrher - would it be DirectSound, JavaSound, or anything else - just the deal of JMF.
I tried to use JavaSound capture with proceeding AudioInputStream to JMF, but failed to do this.
About your problem - best solution seems like that:
    capture sound
    put it into processor
    set format to GSM
    transmit
so then, server receives it and formats it as it likes.
If you want to transmit exactly files, you should use just some of pure java after capturing. java.net, or such thing.
