Converting a video to watch overseas NTSC to Pal

Hello.....I am going to create a photo montage using imovie and idvd. I will later be making copies and I have had a request for a copy for overseas, could anyone give me their suggestions on how I should do this properly. Is it simply going into the idvd "project" drop down mode and change the video setting from NTSC to Pal?
Also I believe that the dvd will be needed for Germany, I do not know what format they are in. I am guessing that they are in the PAL format but I am not sure. Does anyone know this?
Thanks so much in advance.

Yes, Germany (and the rest of W Europe) uses PAL.
And as Kirk says, all modern DVD players sold in Europe play NTSC as well.
Which apparently is not the case in the US (playing PAL DVDs).

  • DVI to Video adapter switches from NTSC to PAL

I just bought an apple dvi to analog video adapter to connect my mac mini to my tv.
It worked like a charm the first time, but seems to reset for no reason from ntsc to pal output. This is really annoying because the pal output is nearly impossible to read, making it painful to switch it back. It's weird because it boots into ntsc just fine and the login window looks good. But as soon as I log in from either account, it opens in pal. When I change it, it will change back over night.
I tried using both composite and s-video plugs. The TV is a sony wega xbr (US).

I assume you have the previous generation mini even though you have posted in the forum for the newer one. The newer one wouldn't work at all from the adapter you describe. Anyway...
...OS X's display preferences files may have corrupted somehow. Especially since it worked before and now it doesn't. That really sounds like a problem with the configuration of the Mac.
In /Library/Preferences is a file called com.apple.windowserver.plist. Navigate your way to it and throw it in the trash. Also, in your main user account (folder with your name on it) under ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost will also be found a file com.apple.windowserver.xxxxxxxxxx.plist where the xxxxx is a hexidecimal string. Throw that file in the trash, too. Now restart.
When OS X restarts and finds those files missing from their expected location, it creates fresh copies with default values. This will give a clean start with any attached display.

  • VHS (NTSC and PAL) conversion to DVD

I am trying to figure out an easy way to convert years of old kids videos (VHS in both NTSC and PAL format) to DVD.
I have seen there are combo VHS players (NTSC) with DVD recorder and hard drives. This looks like a lot easier than connecting Canoplus ADVC device.
    Any advice welcome,
    thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
If you have a digital camcorder you can do what I do. I use a Sony DV camcorder as a pass-through to convert video tape (VHS, Beta & video 8) via FireWire into iMovie.

  • NTSC to PAL - frame by frame

I want to convert a 24p film (HD) from NTSC to PAL.  I do NOT want to generate / render new frames to preserve the exact running time.  I want the conversion to take the first 25 frames and play them in the first second, then assign the next 25 frames to the next second and so on.  NO rendering involved, only "reshuffling" if you will.  I am totally happy with the 4% speed change for video and audio (I realize audio may have to be speeded up thru a separate process),
does anyone have a method within FCP 7 or any other tool, that can accomplish this, this way?

    Use Compressor.
Set the Frame Rate to 25 and in Frame Controls under RATE CONVERSION, select: so source frames play at 25 fps.
I suppose you could use Cinema Tools for this as well.

  • How can I convert DVD- video into Apple's format so that it can be played and streamed from my Mac?

How can I convert DVD- video into Apple's format so that I can play the content on my Mac and also stream it to my Apple TV? A few years ago, I transferred all of my home videos onto DVD but now would really like to put these onto my Mac and stream them through Apple TV to watch on the "big screen". Any advice would be most welcome!! Thanks

    MPEG Streamclip.
Apple do not have their "own" format. You need to convert your DVDs to H.264 though.

  • Download and convert Youtube video to MP3---Just with one click

Download and convert Youtube video to MP3---Just with one click
Last week, when wandering around the Youtube watch.com, I was enthralled with the theme song of "Lost", especially the words of the song "I found out, on the corner of first and amistad, where the west was all but won all weeklong, smoking his last cigarette, I said: "Where you been?" He said: "ask anything.""......"
I couldn’t help expecting to save this song to my personal players. What a delightful thing listening to the song while walking or waiting for a bus! Okay, do you have the same experience as me? When hearing an exciting speech or dialogue, are you thirsty for downloading them and saving as your best memory?
Download, convert Youtube to mp3?—yes, you can.
Anna, one of my best friends, has posed a question "I have a Mac notebook and I only need the audio (mp3 music) of a certain Youtube movie, what shall I do?" The solution to the problem is shown as below:
Step one: Install a Youtube Converter for Mac as follows:
Step two: import the URL of Youtube video (or batches of URL) you wanna convert using "Add URL" icon. Select output format like audio (MP3) by "Settings" and customize your output file path with "Browse".
Step three: If you want your output audio much better, you can set the audio resolution like Bit Rate, Channels or Sample Rate presented in the following picture.
Step four: Click "Ok” button, it automatically download and convert your youtube videos simultaneously. After a few minutes, you can get the desirable audio (mp3) you want and enjoy it on any portable devices.
Download, convert Youtube videos to iPod, iPhone, iPhone 3Gs, PSP, Creative Zen, Zune, iRiver, and etc. --- done by one click.
Generally, if you want to download a Youtube video and then convert them to MP3 for your mobile devices, you need two Youtube tools: Youtube Downloader and Youtube Converter. But, now, with Pavtube Youtube Converter for Mac, you can both download and convert massive videos by clicking one "Ok" button.
Now, all the best, you can enjoy versatile Youtube music at a waiting room, on a bus, traveling, walking around the park or lying on your bed..

Youtube's ToU specifically state that downloads of any content is prohibited unless there is a download button available for a particular video.

  • Video looks fine on NTSC / TV, looks bad on computer screen?

Hi, sorry for the basic question, but i seem to have forgotten the best method for converting my video to a format best suited to play on a computer screen.
I understand the difference between ntsc and computer screens, as well as why ntsc or most standard tv's play interlaced video well, but i can't seem to find a good codec for exporting (or converting) my video so that it will look sharp on a computer screen.
The project is for a school, and the primary playback for them will be 1, via a computer out to lcd projector, and 2, simply on a computer. BY the way, the school uses PC's (UGGG!).
I'm currently doing tests with quick time conversion and trying (amongst other things) Dvix, wmv, and h264.
The videos are all 720 / 480, dv/dvcpro ntsc as far as fcp sequence settings, and have all been exported via compressor > dvdsp4 as standard DVD's. All of them look great on the tv (of course) and now it's just a matter of whipping out versions that are formatted to play best on computers.
    Any advice

apparently there is a de-interlace filter in FCP. i don't know much about solving your problem. it has always been a mystery to me. but found this article yesterday which could be your problem. check it out:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25318
for some reason this link is not working. google this:
"Interlacing: How to prevent jagged lines in video"
itll be the apple.com article of the same title.

  • My ipod somehow converted my video files to music files...

Ok, I know it sounds strange, but it happened. I buy weekly episodes of South Park and The Office from iTunes so I have a video to watch while on break at work. The other day I went to watch Season 3 of The Office and the episodes have all vanished!
I looked around the iPod and found that all the videos on my iPod are missing, not just The Office. However, after looking a little more, I found all these videos in the MUSIC section of the iPod!!!
The videos no longer play with an image, they just play the sound, if even that. I'm on a new computer (I sold the old one) and don't have access to any of these files, so I can't simply reload them onto the iPod.
My question is this: since my iPod randomly converted my video files to audio files on the iPod itself, is it possible to edit them back to video?
I have two other friends who've had this same exact problem. If I can't fix it, should iTunes be responsible for replacing my missing videos? Its obviously a hardware glitch.

Your ipod did not convert them to audio files. That's impossible. If you no longer have the files on your computer, you will have to copy all your music and videos from the ipod, to your new computer and into itunes. Once you have done this, you will then be able to restore your ipod and resync all your files to the ipod.
I assume you have all ready tried restarting your ipod?

  • Converting NTSC to PAL with chapter markers

    Hey guys,
I have just a quick question.
I am making a home made video. I did all the editing in FCP and made a great DVD in iDVD. I would like to do the same thing in PAL format so I can send it to my parents in Europe. My original footage is in NTSC. I did my own research and tried using compressor to change format to PAL.
I tried several different settings (PAL DV, Mpeg 2 PAL) but the outcome movie is always missing chapter markers.
I also tried to import the PAL movie (after conversion in Compressor) to FCP and added chapter markers but did not work.
Does anybody know how to convert the format from NTSC to PAL and keep the chapter markers at the same time? I would like to mantain as high quality as possible.
    Thanks for your help.

Well, this seemed to work. However, being completely new to converting to PAL, I was surprised to see the "jumpiness" that goes along with the frame rate drop. Looking at it taxes the eyes as it seems like its dropping frames every so often. I realize, through more research that this is due to the 25 FPS nature of PAL plus the fact that I'm converting and not just authoring from PAL material. Having said this, is there a tried and true way of "smoothing" this jumpiness that anyone would share?
A friend of mine suggested that when I place the file into DVDSP, I choose the TOP field in the encoding tab, prior to burning the disk. In the past I have always left the FIELD menu set at Auto. He says that setting it to TOP might help a little.
He also told me that a lot of the software based converters don't do the best of jobs. Although acceptable results may come from tweaking the settings, the best way to convert NTSC to PAL (with the most pleasing results) is by using a very high end converter (not a computer). Although you have to weigh out the circumstances such as how many disks will eventually be converted compared to available budget, is it worth spending a little extra for a master that will ultimately see 1,000 copies?
I'm planning on showing my client the burn with field dominance set to TOP, on Monday. Hopefully she'll find it acceptable and I'll be able to move on with this project. Thanks for all the help!

  • Converting NTSC to PAL in CS5, the audio is out of sync-too slow. What do I need to adjust?

Hi. I had to purchase a new Sony video camera in USA (NTSC 29.9fps). We are PAL, so most of my holiday movie is PAL 16:9 widescreen. When I imported the clips from the NTSC camera, I converted the clips to PAL 25fps but the audio is out of sync and appears to be too slow. eg. a male voice is high pitched and not quite audible. Is it the 'bit rate' difference causing the problem and if so, how do I change that in CS5? The PAL clips off my old camera are imported as MPG files. The new camera files are MTS. I am not sure if this is important but would appreciate some help. Thanks.

Adobe doesn't have any tools that perform adequate NTSC<=>PAL conversions, in my view.  You may be better off creating a separate video for the NTSC stuff, keeping it as NTSC.  Your player should be able to handle it fine.

  • How to convert mp4 videos (HD) for use on the new ipad in imovie without a mac.

    Hi,
Please help. I have many videos taken with my sony cybershot camera (Mpv4 (HD)). I have the new ipad and have downloaded imovie. I have converted the videos so they can be viewed on the ipad but imovie will not recognize them. I have a Pc (not a Mac) and have watched many youtube tutorials on how to convert my videos for use on the new ipad and imovie but so far no success.

If you are on the PC there are a LOT of video converters you can use. One of them is Freemake: http://www.freemake.com/
It's free, no ads or banners, clean interface, simple to use, and you can convert to various formats with ease.

  • Converting QuickTime Videos For iPod, iTunes Crashes on Windows

I was trying to convert some Quick Time movies (RvB Seasons 1-3) for my iPod, this is not my first time doing this but this is the first time I am having this problem. One day I open iTunes and try to convert these movies, like 10 seconds later the windows thing comes up and says “iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close” in the technical stuff it gave me it pointed to quicktimeessentials.qtx as the problem. So I searched for this file and deleted it Problem Solved! Or at least I though so when iTunes was able to convert my videos but now no Quick Time video will play right, so then I put the Quick Time file back where it was supposed to be, I can now watch my Quick Time movies but iTunes keeps crashing. Somebody Please Help!

    hiya!
I can now watch my Quick Time movies but iTunes keeps crashing.
just checking. is it currently crashing with that message when you try to launch itunes, or just when you try to convert those videos?
if it's just when you convert those videos, let's check to see if it's a problem with every file, or just the ones you have at the moment. will itunes crash if you try converting the sample file from this document?

  • Playing converted youtube videos

I have a website that is used primarily in schools. A while ago, I had tried downloading some youtube videos (and converting them to wmv and mp3 or mp4 files I think) and had put them on my site. This way, they wouldn't be blocked in schools because they wouldn't be coming from youtube. The problem was when I tried to watch them on my website from my school, the videos played but took forever to load because the file sizes were too big. I want to try converting youtube videos again. I recently heard about progressive download. Is flash the best way to go with this? Do I want to embed the flash file with an FLV video file and an SWF file to play the video?

The media card maximum size is according to your OS release version.
Personally, I would recommend you upgrade to a higher 4.5 release, as .55 is old and was not so great as I recall.

  • 2 questions: Convert analog video AV- USB Converter; Good TV Tuner For IMac

    1) I need to convert analog video tapes onto my Mac. What's a good AV to USB converter?
    2) I'd like to take advantage of my 24" screen and occasionally watch TV on my Mac. What's a good TV tuner?
    Thanks.

Most recommend the Canopus converter, but it is $100-200. I was curious if the analog to digital tv converters available for $10 with the $40 govt coupon would serve the same purpose. I don't know why it wouldn't, but I haven't seen one. I'm going to try to borrow from a friend and see.
Otherwise you can borrow someone's Sony Digital8 to use to play Hi8 and it works as a converter (some models don't do Hi8 playback). This worked for me, but I was afraid I would wear out the "eject' on my friends Digital8 bc I have 60 tapes to transfer.
Other option is to play on old Hi8 thru a miniDV camcorder, used as a converter. My Canon zr500 miniDv doesn't seem to have that option.
I may try to use my Presidian dvr from Radio Shack as a pass thru converter. I haven't tried it yet either, but I think it might be yet another option. If anyone knows how to do any of these, please reply. It seems the tv converter should work and I'll get one if it does.

  • Still no Audio after converting the video to MP4?

I have a 60gig IPod Video using windows XP. I have used the Videora Converter to Convert the video to MP4. Then I have imported the video into itunes and then put it on my IPod but there is still no Audio when I try to watch it. There is audio watching it through itunes though. I also tried clicking on "convert selection for ipod" in the advanced menu and it stated that it was already in the correct format. Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Sean

"If this is the case, the original video file may be in a format that contains muxed (multiplexed) audio and video, and cannot be exported with audio."..."If the format is "MPEG1 Muxed" or "MPEG2 Muxed," the audio portion of the file may not be retained with QuickTime Pro or iMovie."
I have read that article and I thought it ment that the sound will work after you convert to the MPEG4 format, which I did.
Are you saying that if it starts out as "Muxed audio" then there is no way to convert it?
If that is the case then in what situation would you need to use the Videora Converter?
    Thanks,
    Sean
