Converting Album Catalogs to Elements 11 Catalogs

I am having difficulty converting my old Photoshop Album Catalogs (file extension .psa) to Elements 11.
Using "Manage Catalogs" from the file tab and then "Convert".  I get the convert catalog screen.  Using "find catalogs"  I can browse to the folder where the .psa Catalogs are but the window does not list them as choices for converting.
I have seen this question many times in the forum but none of the proposed solutions have worked for me.
This is especially annoying as one time (and only one time) it did list them and I was able to succesfully convert some of them but I can't recreate this for the remaining catalogs.
I don't remember doing anyting different the one time it worked.

Thanks for trying to help, unfortunately it does not work.
I have 4 catalogs.  Ticking the checkbox "show previously converted catalogs" lists the 3 that were succesfully converted, but not the 4th that has yet to be converted.
I tried tricking it by moving one converted catalog to another folder and renaming the unconverted catalog to the same name.
As expected this did not work, but it was worth a try.
The unconverted catalog is larger than than the others because it is my main one, but not that much larger than one of those successfully converted. (27kb vs 19kb).  I don't think the size matters as it doesn't even list the catalog in the select window.
Any other ideas would be appreciated as Adobe chat was unwilling to help, claiming that "Album" was too old to support.
My opinion is that I needed support to get the brand new "Elements 11" to work properly not "Album", but they disagreed.
As I mentioned before, the real frustration stems from the fact that based on personal experience, I KNOW "Elements 11" can do this, I just don't know how.
The trusty old computer with "Album" died and the new one won't run it. I need some way of saving all the info previously entered.
Thanks for any help,

  • Trouble converting a catalog from Adobe Photoshop Album into Elements 9

I have looked all over and found instructions for converting a catalog from Adobe Photoshop Album into Photoshop Elements 9, but it does not see my catalog?  I have tried selecting it by clicking "Find More Catalogs" and I select the folder containing the catalog but it does not show up and the option to "Show Previously Converted Catalogs" is disabled?  I am quite frustrated, as the entire reason for purchasing Adobe Photoshop Elements was to be able to import my old Photoshop Album catalog.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the suggestion, I have tried converting the catalog from the psa file as well as restoring from the psb (backup) file and neither one is working on my new computer.  It partially converts the catalog from Photoshop Album (PSA) 2 but then all the file links are broken in Photoshop Elements (PSE) 9.  I have about 10,000 photos in this catalog, so it is a lot of files.  I still have my old computer so I tried installing PSE 9 on it and then it converted the PSA catalog fine, so I backup up the PSE 9 catalog on my old computer and tried doing a restore from this backup on my new computer and same thing, only some of the files come through.

I

finally getting back to this project---adobe starter edition 3.2 is on a windows XP computer
ADOBE PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 12 is on our Windows 8.1 computer.
error messages--- had to give up trying to convert---I copied all our pictures to our windows 7 laptop and I installed adobe photoshop elements 12 (my bought program)
I wanted to try to convert there first. also I copied our catalog to this computer also. Everything was working fine I could see the collections just as they where on the XP computer.
then I tried to convert on the laptop. I believe the error said something about corrupt file, so I gave up that day. Next day I tried to open ADOBE STARTER EDITION 3.2  and it wanted an unlock code, no such code exists. and my copy of Elements 12 turned into a trial version which has expired. So I am a little hesitant to try to convert on the XP  computer and mess up the existing catalog,
unless there is a fool proof way. I have tried manually making collections/ albums on Windows 8.1 and PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 12  and coping pictures into the new albums. sloooow!!
I probably have about 4500 pictures and 150 collections/ albums to go. So any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Can I convert pse3 catalog to pse7 on windows 7 and retain all my albums and vcds that I made?

Can I convert pse3 catalog to pse7 on windows7 and retain all my albums and vcds? and how do I do it?

I have no experience with PSE3, only from PSE4 on.
Have a look at that note:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/backup-restore-move-catalog-photoshop.html
    And:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/common-catalog-issues-upgrade-elements.html
I suppose there is a way to 'write metadata to files' in PSE3. This writes all your tags, captions and ratings from your catalog to the metadata header of each of your media files. Those are recognized and recovered if you 'get photos and videos...' from files or folders in ulterior versions of Elements.

  • Photoshop elements 12 - convert a catalog

    My PC has three drives
C for the programs, D for the photos and F for the backup photos
With the upgrade to Elements 12, C is nearly maxed out
Except for "C" there are multiple catalogs on each drive, C should have none
I do not see an ability to convert the most recent catalog on each drive?
When a catalog is converted - does it reside on the same drive as the catalog?
If a catalog ends up on the wrong drive, for example C - can I just move/drag it to another drive?
Your catalogs end up under something called "breeze data" and are very diffcult to find, why are they called this?
This conversion appears to have placed the converted photographs in 'C", is that possible, since they were not there at the start?
When I tried a conversion earlier this evening, it only did the most recent photographs I had accessed, how do I ensure it gets them all?
Since it did a partial conversion, will the rest of the conversion land in the same catalogue or in a completely new one?
When a file is converted, and I return to the drive, how will the icon be changed so that I know it has been converted?
For the previous elements 10, can I just drag it from Drive C to D (that way I can still use it with the pictures I have not converted), and have it still operate or must it reside in a program files folder?
As I type this I wonder if I might not be better off with just leaving the photographs as they are on 10 and starting afresh on elements 12
    Sorry for all the questions
    Thanks

    1) For those backup catalogues that I have on D and F i can still back those up by going to the drive (through photoshop elements and your instructions above) and doing a conversion.  The result will still stay in the same drive.  If I have multiple catalogues on a drive, I should convert each one of them or just the most recent?
You can convert any catalog that you may need, it's up to you to decide if it's worth converting for ulterior use.
    2) For that backup of the catalog that was done in C, and then completely filled that drive, there is nothing I can do except increase the memory on drive C
If your C: drive can't hold all your picture files, you can use external drives to increase your storing space. Catalogs keep track of your images on different drives. You can move all or a part of your picture files to other external or internal drives. External USB drives are a good and affordable solution. The catalog itself (the catalog folder) may stay in the default location in your C: drive, or you can move it elsewhere. The organizer will be more responsive if the catalog in your main internal drive, but moving the catalog to an external drive containing all your picture files is a good way to be able to share your pictures with another computer having Elements.
    3) After all the conversions are done, I can de-install photoshop elements 10 from C because it will no longer be useable with the old photographs
Yes, that will free up some space.
    4) I should not touch/move the converted files in C
    Is this correct?
You can move or copy the catalog folder from C if there is a good reason for that, such as sharing the catalog with another computer. Since the catalog manager in Elements does not allow to do the move from default location to a custom one (while it enables the opposite move), you simply use the explorer / Finder to move or copy the catalog file to custom location. Simply double click on the catalog.pseXXdb file to open the organizer and the moved catalog.
Of course, moving picture files from C is another matter. Either you use the organizer to move those, or you use the explorer / finder, which will disconnect the link to the files and require that you do a 'reconnect' from the organizer (not always easy).

  • Importing Albums into Photoshop Elements 8 for MAC

Has anyone had experience in importing a series of Albums - created in Photoshop Elements (6) for Windows - into Photoshop Elements 8 for MAC?  I have thousands of photos, arranged into separate Albums, that were created in Photoshop Elements for Windows and which were backed up onto an external harddrive, that I want to move into Photoshop Elements 8 for MAC.  However, I do not see how to do this. HELP!!!

    Dear Ms. Brundage -
I followed the directions detailed in your blog entitled "Moving a Catalog from Windows to Mac" as well as your description of the process on page 58 of your book "Photoshop Elements 9 - the missing manual."
I installed PE9 for Windows and converted my catalog.  I then backed up that catalog to an external hard drive.  I then connected the hard drive to my MAC on which I also installed Photoshop Elements 9 for MAC.  I opened the Organizer and tried to restore that converted catalog.  However, for each file in the converted catalog, a dialog box opened that said "Could not restore file:  /Volumes/Name of External Hard Drive/Filename.JPG."
I then made a second backup of the converted catalog using Photoshop Elements 9 for Windows and then tried to restore that catalog again on the MAC using Photoshop Elements 9 for MAC, again to no avail.
Do you have any idea what the problem may be?
    Thanks again.

  • Photoshop Album to Photoshop elements File size issue

I have used album v2 for a few years, and only import proxy files from off-line media (CD/DVD) to keep the backup file small which makes it easier to keep 2 computers on the same page..(15000 image files = 6GB) I make a backup to a portable drive monthly, and restore to 2nd pc.. etc
I have converted the catalogue into elements 9 succesfully, and it correctly points to the relevent discs if I need the full res files.
My question is.. Can I do this sort of import in Photoshop Elements 9? In album there was a check box for keeping the files off-line during import and to name the disc for reference , but I cant see this in elements... Perhaps I am missing something obvious..
Looking through the dialoge boxes, I wonder if you import the full res file, then move/copy to disc leaving behind the proxy...
I am on the trial, and dont want to buy if its not what I want..
Apologies if this topic is listed elsewhere.. I have looked, but cant find one..
    Thanks for any pointers,

I'm not sure but it sounds a lot like the question I posed to the forum a little later today.  It may be that the newer versions of PSE are not compatible with transfering all the Categories, Sub Categories and Tags from versions up to PSE 10.  I am presently using PSE 10 because I couldn't figure out how to save all the organization I have put into Elements over the past 10 years or so.
I'm hoping for an answer to my question.

  • This question involves Adobe Album Starter and Elements 8

I have recently purchased Elements 8 and have started to transfer photos from Album Starter to Elements 8.
I was successful with some but there are a great many left with the little red icon in the middle bottom of them.
I am unable to do anything with them: copy, print, duplicate or anything.  The message reads that it is not able to connect.
How am I going to get my pictures released from Album Starter.  This has been an on going problem with Adobe. Please, please help
me retrieve my photos otherwise I will have to discontinue use of Elements 8 and ask for a refund.  These photos are important to
    me.  Erma Platter

    Just as I suspected.
To maybe help clarify, your photos are not "in" Starter Edition", so there is no way to "get them out of there".
    Think of it this way:
Imagine your photos are books in a library. The books themselves are actually located on the shelves in the library. But, there's a section of the library with the Index Cards. One index card for every book, with the index cards all nicely organized in drawers so you can find the book your looking for without wandering around the whole library. Each index card has a description of the book, a picture of the book, and most importantly, information as to where the book is stored on the shelves so you can go find it.
So, the books are not "in" the Index Card Drawers.
Now, imagine that after all the index cards had been created, someone goes around the library and moves the books. Maybe, even throws some of them away.
Then, you go to the Index Drawer, find the "book" you are looking for, see that it is located on shelf G54-102, walk over to shelf G54-102, but the book isn't there, because someone moved it without telling the person who maintains the Index Cards.
That book is Disconnected from the Index Card.
Now, let's bring that analogy back to Starter Edition (and Elements)
    The Books are your photos
The Shelves are your Hard Disk
The Index Card Drawer is Starter Edition (or Elements)
The Index Cards are the presentation of your photos in Starter Edition (or Elements)
So, just as the Books are not in the Index Card Drawers, your Photos are not in Starter Edition.
What is "in" Starter Edition is simply information about your photo. A small thumbnail (which is what you see in Starter Edition) and most importantly, a reference to where on your hard drive the photo is actually stored.
When you try and do anything with your photo that requires the origional file, Starter Edition goes to fetch the origional file from your hard drive to work with it. If the file is no longer where Starter Edition thinks it is, then Starter Edition tells you it is Disconnected.
At this point you need to tell Starter Edition where the photo was moved to. That's what the Reconnect process is all about. In order to reconnect your photo, you need to know where it was moved. Hopefully, it was simply moved to a different folder, and not deleted.
This Disconnected situation is typically caused by folks using Windows to re-arrainge their hard drive folders and their pictures AFTER having "imported" them into Starter Edition.
If your photos were moved in Windows, you can tell Starter Edition where they were moved to using Reconnect.
If your photos were deleted in Windows, unfortionatalty, they are gone, unless they still happen to be in your Windows Trash.
    So.... what to do?
I'd use Starter Edition (or Elements) to get the file name of one of the Disconnected files.
Then, I'd use Windows Search to search for that file name.
Hopefully Windows Search will find your photos, safely stored in some other spot on your hard drive.
