Converting an early 2005 powermac 2.0ghz to a 2.3ghz

i fell into an early powermac g5 2.0ghz.  the processor runs fine for what i need but id like more memory than the 4gb allowed.  ive found some reasonably priced 2.3 processors on ebay and such and was wondering if i can swap them out and put 2gb of memory in each slot to bump up to 8gb allowed with the stock 2.3ghz machine? or am i just stuck where im at? the processors on ebay are complete units, so i would just be swaping out the whole set, no soldering etc.

the processor runs fine for what i need but id like more memory than the 4gb allowed.
It would be cost-effective to figure out first if you really need more RAM. Here's the simplest way:
1) Run the computer for several days without a restart (sleep is OK). Do all your normal activities and programs.
2) Launch Activity Monitor. Look at the bottom of the window for this section (this is from 10.6; 10.5 may look a  bit different:
3) Note the entries for "Page Ins" and "Page Outs." In this example the "Outs" are only  a trivial percentage of  the "Ins" indicating the computer is not struggling for RAM. If the "Outs" get to be 10-25 percent of the "Ins" you need more physical RAM. In this example from an Intel iMac quad-core i7 with 4GB RAM, the computer has not been restarted since  the first week in May so this is a pretty representative status for my computer.

  • Dual Display on Early 2005 Powermac G5 - Second DVI Port bad?

    Hi
I've just bought a second display for my Powermac and can't get it to work. Monitors OSD says no DVI signal and i get a blank screen on second display. Main display is still fine.
System Profiler recognises that second monitor is attached and SysPref/Displays thinks that there are two monitors attached.
Monitor & cable definitley good as they work when I swap them round.
Monitors are Sony SDM-S75D & S74. Graphics card is an ATI Radeon 9600.
I've not used the second DVI port since I bought the Mac new a two years ago, so it may never have been good.
    I've tried:
    Known good tft display
    Known good dvi cable
    Reseat cables
    PMU reset
    NVRAM reset
    Open firmware reset-all
    Checked for updated drivers.
Before I look at buying a new graphics card, is there anything I haven't tried yet?
    Cheers
    Gareth

    OK, this is odd.
    In desperation after finding out the price of a new graphics card;
my sony tfts are dual input dvi and vga. so i dug out the dvi to vga connector that came with the mac. Now running the second monitor via dvi to vga converter and its ok. not as sharp an image as the dvi main monitor, but ok. will still have to buy a new graphics card sometime.
So dvi to vga works on 2nd port, but not dvi to dvi!!

  • Early 2005 PowerMac G5, System Freezes Randomly.

I've found this to be a tough one.
This Dual Core, 2.0 Ghz G5 is freezing at random times. I'll leave it running over night and the next day it's all locked up with the case fans running on full - apparently it's in open firmware mode - its running on firmware code at this point I think. The problem seems to be hardware related.
Clean OS X.4 install, All latest updates.
It passes the extended hardware Test, no problems.
For me, That narrows it down to just about anything.
I have found no sure way to reproduce the freezing problem and I'm wondering what part to replace first.
This computer is used heavily for editing of large video files.
I was leaning towards a new mainboard for the first part replacement.

    Mark,
We just went through a problem that sounds very similar to yours. We have a G5 Dual Core 2.3 Mhz machine running 10.4.4. We were getting freezes in photoshop CS2. After weeks of this happening we called Apple, they first had us reset the power manager and run disk utilities from the start up CD. It passes the disk utility. After the call it locked up again. We called a second time and they had us repair permissions on the hard drive and reset the NVRam and openfirmware. They also had us run the Apple Hardware test and that passed. The computer locked again. We called a third time and they had us create a new user and install the Photoshop in that new user account. The machine locked again. We called again and the tech said it was probably either the logic board or processor. I called the local apple store and brought it to the store. One thing that we found is that in photoshop it might take a few hours before it would lock up, but if we put in some sort of video game like Battle field 1942 it usually froze in under 10 minutes. At the store the tech put a program on the computer that is suppose to tax the processor, after 15 minutes with 20 or so programs running at full speed and doing all sorts of tasks it was still running smooth. I asked the tech if he minded if I played my video game and he said not at all, with in 6 minutes it locked solid. I opted to by a $99 procare card that jumped me to the head of the repair line, the next day they called me and said that they replaced the processor and they thought the problem was solved. I went to the store with my game and played there for a half hour and everything seemed fine. I brought the machine back to work and so far so good. If you have apple care on the machine, I suggest you find a game and head to your local apple store. The processor was $1015 and the repair was $135, but we had apple care and didn't pay anything.

  • Are logic boards interchangeable - such as the 3 early 2005 power mac  comp

    Hello all,
I have another question similar to the one about whether or not different cases can be interchanged.
    My "new" question is this:
Are the 3 "early 2005" Power Mac logic boards interchangeable? In other words, could one use a dual 2.0 or 2.3 or 2.7 ghz logic board in any of these models
or is each logic board specific to the speed of the processor? Or can the quad 4 2.5 ghz logic board be substituted into a dual 2.7 ghz case?
When you answer, could you please try to answer in simple terms.
    Thanks,
    Stacey Bindman

Hi, sorry for the bump. I am looking to get a new logic board for my G5. I've been looking around eBay and some info you said contradicts the descriptions of some items, namely:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/APPLE-POWERMAC-G5-820-1760-A-LOGIC-BOARDW0QQitemZ230384643421QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotherboards?hash=item35a3fead5d&trksid=p3286.c0.m14
    and

The 820-1760-A only has 4 ram slots, and by what Steve said, can only be compatible with the 2.0 ghz processors. The second listing has a model number of 820-1592-A, which the seller claims is compatible with 2.0+ ghz processors.
So which one of you is right? I'm looking to replace my June 2004 board which has the same model number as the second listing, but am not sure if that listing is an Early 2005 model or not...

  • Upgrading an early 2005 G5 Power Mac - memory & HD - your hindsight appreci

Hello, I have an early 2005 G5 Power Mac, dual 2.3 Ghz, 2GB memory, and a 400GB Hitachi Drive.
In researching memory and hard drives, I come face to face with all the engineering terms and now have cold feet about it.
My existing memory is called: PC3200U-30330 DDR SRAM. I found a Samsung module on the web called a PC3200 DDR400 for $61 but the vendor won't confirm compatibility. Can anyone recommend a competitively priced substitute for the expensive Apple part? Is there a rule of thumb on knowing how much is too much or should I just buy 6 additional 1GB modules and have done with it.
I have one HD. I assume it is a SATA-1. I'd like to buy a 500mb 2nd drive. I have read the SATA-2 drives are backward compatible; are they? How should the jumper on the new drive be set: cable select??
Finally, are there any performance suggestions anyone could mention for me to look into? I am editing music files in the 10 to 75mb range, cutting and re-constructing movie clips in the 4.7 gb range.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions,
    Sam
M978xx/A wATI-Radeon9650XT   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   I am an IBM compatible user converting to Apple

    Hi,
the RAM compatible with your computer you can find here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?model=219&type=Memory&TI=1906&shoup grds=Show+Upgrades
And also on other Mac's sites like Crucial, Omni Technologies
I would be very careful with PC's RAM - some of them can work with Mac, but some don't.
Hard disk SATA-2 is backward compatible, so you can buy for example Maxtor MaxLine Pro 500 GB:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Maxtor/7H500F0/
    or WD RE2 500 GB:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD5000YS/
    or Hitachi:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Hitachi/0A31619/
I think that you don't need more then the next 2GB of RAM. In fact, if you editing music - your current 2GB seems to be fine. But always 4 GB is better then 2 GB
And performance suggestion in this case is faster processor - so, you can buy used Quad G5, or better MacPro 3.0 with 2 GB RAM.
    Marek.

  • Seagate HARD DISK Barracuda 2 TB 7200 64MB SATA3: can I fit in a Power Mac G5 Dual 2,7 Ghz (early 2005)?

Can I fit this Sata 3 in a Power Mac G5 Dual 2,7 Ghz (early 2005)?
Is there anyone who has bought it?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
G5s require SATA 1.5 Gb/s, some SATA2 or SATA3 drives are SATA1 compliant & step down, others do not, still others will if there's a true SATA1 Drive in slot 0.

  • Purchasing a new Boot drive  for Power PC Mac dual G5 2.7 GHz ( early 2005)

As I’ve mentioned I have Power MAC Dual G5 2,7 GHz( early 2005)
I’m doing “ erase and install” on my boot drive Caviar and starting from the scratch - Basically doing whole new setup with my music apps, sample libraries and back up.
To describe it little better - My plan is to move Caviar to second slot ( mostly will be used for I-tunes,documents,photos and maybe some back up) and purchase new boot drive.
All my audio and music samples I’m running from 4 bay ( sata ) exterior hot swap enclosure with Lycom card so my boot drive will be clearly for OS X and applications.
Now - I’ve gone through a big research and even though I have not really make up my mind about my purchase - here is what I’ve found out so far.
As a boot drive I’ve been considering following ( I’m adding my comments as well)
    1) My first pick was Hitachi T7K500 320GB SATA II HD 16MB Cache -
seemed to me like a very good choice for a boot drive since it has a great random access .But after reading review in “ AMUG reviews “ Using a Hitachi T7K500 320GB with a Mac Pro I was not that sure .Apparently They don’t recommend Hitachi T7K500 for internal Mac Pro usage since it is slower without using SATA host adapter. But that is Mac Pro - I have Dual processor so it might be different?
    Second choice was
    2) Maxtor MaXLine III 500GB or Maxtor MaXLine Pro 500 GB
here I’m not sure -some guys don’t really recommend this brand but in bunch of online reviews I’ve read it was mentioned as a very good choice for a boot drive .
I’ve been told that this drive is too noisy and too cheap which I think is not a bad thing though.
    And finally
    3) Raptor 74 GB or 150 GB
Everyone knows those drives are fast
Downside is that size is not very big ( just my OS X will be around 50 GB)
plus 150 Gig won’t work natively on my G5 without host card which would be another extra expense .
Maybe one more thing to add - I have not consider neither seagate drives (since random access speed is not that great) nor pairing any of those previously mentioned drives into raid 0 configuration .
So basically that is my selection.I’m trying to pick up drive which would work natively without PCI - X card and would be reliable and fast.( Only if I would have no choice - Than I would probably buy a host card )
Also I’m not sure whether for example in the case of hitachi ( or even other brands ) would be smarter to go with bigger size - maybe 400 or 500 GB for a boot since all drives getting slower as they get filled up.
I would really appreciate if anyone can give me a feedback as far as what drive would be the best choice in my case.
Thank you very much for your time
    Milan

OK - I'll try that one more time - second choice is Maxtor Maxline III 500 GB or maxtor maxline Pro 500 GB.

  • Anyone Using Parallels or VMWare on Early 2009 mini 2.0GHz?

There's been some controversy as to whether the Early 2009 mini 2.0GHz has VT-x (needed for fast virtualization) enabled. The stock P7350 Intel processor in it has VT-x disabled, but Apple is supposedly getting a custom version with VT-x enabled.
I'm just trying to find some final confirmation on this subject: people actually using Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion on this machine.
I'd be especially interested in reports of a 64-bit Windows version as guest as this apparently absolutely requires VT-x to be working (not just falsely reporting so, or "sort-of" implemented but flawed).

I've seen confirmation from screenshots of people using Parallels, and from various CPU identifier tools in OSX and running Windows via Boot Camp.
What I can't comprehend is why Apple doesn't advertise the fact.
Thinking that the bottom-end Mini didn't have Vt (and not wanting to deal with special-orders) I bought a new Windows PC rather than a new Mac last month.
(I'll get around to the Mac; since I run both, they both need periodic upgrades. But Apple threw away money last month because they couldn't bother to make it clear that both Minis support Vt.
Since they're happy to sell Parallels and VMWare through their store, you'd think they'd want to make it clear...)

  • Downgrading my early 2005 2.3 GHz G5

I have an early 2005 2.3 GHz G5 that I bought exclusively for use as an audio server, i.e. I run music player software (a la iTunes) and route output via Firewire to a pro audio DAC. I'm running OS X 10.4.11, as it sounds superior.
The problem for use in audio is, of course, the fan noise ... even when the fans are not in Huey mode.
I'm in the process of downgrading the X800XT video card in an attempt to reduce it's own fan noise, plus the heat.
The inside of the case is very clean. I've upgraded firmware, which reduced the frequency of Huey mode (aka jet takeoff noise).
I've replaced the spinning hard drive with an OCZ Vertex Turbo SSD. I'm not running an Airport card.
What else can be done to minimize heat, and therefore the fans, and their noise?
Any other downgrades that are possible, to reduce heat or AC power requirements?
    thanks in advance

I too have been using even an older G4 Quicksilver strictly for Audio in my home built studio. Think of the noise factor with 'this' machine. Problem with my studio is that I couldn't build a separate control room, (not enough room). In fact I even need to cover some of the enclosure with a comforter very carefully as to not block the cooling exhaust.
Your G5; a Dual Core? Dual Processor?
My G5 Dual Core (which I use for FCP), is upstairs. I've currently got a nVidia GForce 7800GT - it's nice and quiet - quieter than the G4.

  • Upgrade video card for Late 2005 PowerMac G5

I am looking for an upgrade video card for a Late 2005 PowerMac G5, which has the PCI-Express slots. I need at least 256 MB of VRAM.
Since this computer is a discontinued model, there doesn't seem to be too many options for video cards. I've seen some cards like the NVidia 6600 or 6800, or even ATI's X800, but they appear to be difficult to find.
The one card that is readily available still is the ATI X1900, which looks great, but a little on the pricey side ($349).
I did notice the NVidia 7300 GT, which is more moderately priced ($145), but it only mentions being an upgrade card for the Mac Pro. Will this also work with the PowerMac G5 (Late 2005) model? I would hate to buy this video card and then find out that it won't work.

The only available upgrade card for the Late 2005 G5s is the X1900GT (aka G5 Edition). It's basically on par with the nVidia 7800GT that was available as a BTO option.
You can get the 7800GT and QuadroFX 4500 as replacement parts, but they're exorbitantly priced.
The Mac Pro cards won't work (even though they're also PCI-Express) due to the ROM on the card. It's only setup to work with the Mac Pro's EFI boot system and doesn't have the necessary code to work with the PowerMac's Open Firmware boot system.

Hello, I currently own a Power Mac G5 buily in early 2005. I can not install and run the new software that is for the Intel Mac's. I believe the early Mac Pro G5 Desktops did not have the intel CPU processors. Can anybody tell me if there a way around this problem? I wish I could run all the newer software currently available. Please only respond if you have knowledge of this.

Kappy's reply is 100% on target, of course, and you are right about needing the Intel chip.
Just to clarify, though, there is no such thing as a "Mac Pro G5 Desktop".  If it is a G5, it is NOT a "Mac Pro", but a Power Mac G5.  If it were a Mac Pro, it would have an Intel CPU and it would not be a G5.
