Converting an Oracle 8i database to 10g

I have several Oracle databases that need to be converted to 10g. The 8i databases reside on a Windows platform, and the 10g database is on an IBM p-Series server with AIX as the operating system. We are planning to export the 8i database, and then import it into 10g. My question is, will the import process bring the database in as an 8i database, or a 10g database? Do we need to run the conversion process after we import the database? Any advice from others that have done this would be appreciated. I have a copy of the 10g Upgrade Guide, which I will be reading tonight. Thank you!

Adding for previos replies..
Please make sure that you take the export from lower version export utility (8i) and perform the import using 10g import utility. Please read metalink Note:132904.1 for more information regarding this

  • Migration from Oracle 9i database to 10g in ECC5

    Hi Experts,
We are planning to move our production system which is currently running ECC5 on AIX OS and Oracle 9i database to AIX OS and Oracle 10g database.
Some doubts regarding the above procedure:
1)Is there any possibility of SAP system migration from Oracle 9i to Oracle 10g. If yes, do we need to perform any addinitional steps for that?
2)If the above condition is OK, then what type of system copy should we need to follow: Homogeneous or Heterogeneous? Heterogeneous system copy is ususally done incase of system copy involving different databases. Does that apply for differnt versions too like Oracle 9i and 10g?
    Any response is highly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Sanjay

If i'm using the dbua then the above issue will be solved by dbua itself?Well, DBUA will only perform a sanity check on your current release and if it doesn't pass it will fail. In other words DBUA will not upgrade your 9i release to the proper compatible release that you have to do before upgrading to 10R2.
Personally I never used DBUA, I always prefer manual upgrades, DBUA is good for you bcz it will not allow you to miss any step while upgrading.
What is the size of the database which you are going to upgrade?

  • Creating an Oracle Spatial database in 10g and connecting ArcGIS

I have a set of shapefiles that I want to convert into Oracle Spatial 10g and then be able to view these with the capability of ArcGIS 9 (without using ArcSDE).
From what I've read, I think this could be done by using ODBC. Once that connection is made, will I then be able to use the full functionality of ArcGIS especially read/write functions to edit the information in Oracle Spatial?
What data formats does Oracle Spatial in 10g support. I am concerned about raster data, CAD data, Survey data etc

The shape files can be loaded into Oracle spatial using shp2sdo.exe available on web.To view the GIS data in ArcGIS ,ArcGIS needs the layers to be registered. Therefore you need Arcsde for registering the layers. But for viewing the data in Arcgis we do not need arcsde ,we can view the data using direct connect. For editing the data we can use ODBC connection.
About raster data,we can load tiff, jpeg, bmp, png, gif using georaster tools provided by oracle into georaster tables.

  • Oracle 11g database & OBIEE 10g user id case sensitivity

    Hi,
Previously we used to point OBIEE to 10g database and the following query used to return data. But now we have database upgraded to 11g R2. Is there a way to make the 11g R2 database case insensitive and make the following query return results? Here when EMP_LOGIN = upper(bmiller) query is working, but not when EMP_LOGIN = bmiller.
    select T32660.X_DISTRICT as c1,
    count(distinct case when T32385.OPTY_WID > 0 then T32385.OPTY_WID end ) as c2
    from
    W_POSITION_H T37785 /* Dim_W_POSITION_H */ ,
    W_POSITION_D T36585 /* Dim_W_POSITION_D */ ,
    W_EMPLOYEE_D T32660 /* Dim_W_EMPLOYEE_D */ ,
    W_OPTY_D T31547 /* Dim_W_OPTY_D */ ,
    W_ORG_D T31796,
    W_REVN_F T32385 /* Fact_W_REVN_F */
    where ( T32385.PR_TEAM_POS_WID = T36585.ROW_WID
    and T31547.ROW_WID = T32385.OPTY_WID
    and T31796.ROW_WID = T32385.PR_ACCNT_WID
    and T32385.PR_TEAM_EMP_WID = T32660.ROW_WID
    and T36585.ROW_WID = T37785.SUB_POSITION_WID
    and T37785.EMP_LOGIN = upper('bmiller')
    and T37785.EMP_LOGIN = 'bmiller' )
    group by T32660.X_DISTRICT
    order by c1
    Thanks

If this query was working in the old system, my assumption is that something was changing your session's NLS_COMP to Linguistic. If OBIEE isn't issuing that ALTER SESSION in a login script, the next most likely scenario would be a login trigger that was issuing the ALTER SESSION when the OBIEE user logged in. That trigger would have remained in place had you used the DBUA to upgrade. If you did an export and import, however, it's possible that you didn't export the login trigger.

  • Available Now: Oracle Database Lite 10g Release 1

The Oracle Database Lite development team is pleased to announce the availability of Oracle Database Lite 10g (10.0.0.0.0) for Windows 2000/XP, Solaris 2.6, 2.7, 2.8, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS/ES 2.1/3.0 platforms.
The Windows release is currently available from OTN at:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/lite/index.html
Oracle Database Lite 10g is a complete and integrated solution for rapid development and deployment of high impact, mission vital applications for mobile and lightweight embedded environments. Oracle Database Lite is an extension to Oracle Database 10g for enterprises wanting to increase productivity, reduce operational costs, and improve customer satisfaction.
Oracle Database Lite uses data synchronization to reliably and securely exchange data between a corporate Oracle Database and mobile workers. Oracle Database Lite also allows companies to deploy and manage users, mobile applications and devices from a remote central location. Oracle Database Lite provides the necessary framework enterprise customers need to extend their enterprise applications and data to the most popular mobile platforms: Palm OS, Linux, Microsoft Windows CE/PPC, and Microsoft Windows NT/2000/XP/UNIX.
The following is a partial list of new features for Oracle Database Lite 10g that will make your mobile deployment easier to manage, use, and develop. A complete list will be available for download/viewing soon.
    Device Management
As the number of mobile devices in an enterprise increases, it becomes more important to have complete control of the devices. Oracle Database Lite Device Management is a complete infrastructure to monitor and manage Oracle Database Lite assets such as database files, software libraries, data, and application files on remote devices. Device management decreases the total cost of ownership and protects an enterprises intellectual property.
    Single Oracle Lite Binary
The Oracle Database Lite 10g release contains a single set of Oracle Lite database kernel binaries for all languages, removing the necessity of having different binaries for each of the following languages: Korean, Traditional Chinese, simplified Chinese, Japanese, and US/European languages.
    Shared Map
The shared map function greatly improves performance by reducing sync processing timeand enhances the scalability of shared publication items. Shared maps allow users to share record state information and reduce the size of the resulting replication map tables.
    Offline Instantiation
Offline instantiation enables quick and easy setup of mobile devices for business applications. Mobile administrators are able to prepare, in batch mode, a client package, which includes the mobile client software and initial data for every mobile user. This procedure helps users avoid an expensive online synchronization processes as part of the first time mobile client setup procedure.
    Synchronization Manager
The Synchronization Manager is a complete, web-based enterprise management application to manage and monitor synchronization. The Synchronization Manager allows administrators to manage the synchronization service, monitor and analyze sync performance, administer the configuration, trace synchronization history, display and browse synchronization publication and subscription information, and monitor MGP (Message Generator and Processor) performance.
    Oracle Application Server Support
The Oracle Database Lite 10g Mobile Server now runs as a web application on Oracle Containers for Java (OC4J) – the runtime of Oracle Application Server. If Oracle
Database Lite 10g is deployed in standalone mode, an embedded version of OC4J will be installed and used. Oracle Database Lite may also be installed against an existing instance of Oracle Application Server.
    Seamless upgrade from Oracle9 i Lite 5.0.2
The Oracle Database Lite 10g Upgrade Assistant allows customers to easily upgrade from existing Oracle9 i Lite 5.0.2 installations. The Upgrade Assistant automatically converts existing application definitions to the new format, and copies all relevant files to the new installation. As many customers have deployed mission critical systems using Oracle9i Lite technology, the Upgrade Assistant has been designed to minimize system downtime.
    Download
Oracle Database Lite 10g (10.0.0.0.0) for Windows can now be downloaded from the following location.
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/lite/index.html

I am using Oracle 10g lite. Do you know if it supports silent installation.

  • Convert Window Oracle 10g to Linux Oracle 11g

    HI Experts
My current version is Oracle 10g on Window and i want to convert on Oracle 11g on Linux.
What will be the best way to convert it ? can possible to direct convert
or i need to be database migration from window Oracle 10g to Linux Oracle 10g and then covert from Linux Oracle 10g to Linux Oracle 11g.
If the direct conversion is possible then please let me know the way or if u have document then please share it.
I searched lot but i didn't get anything.....
    Thanks in advance

What is the expected downtime duration ?
What is the database size ?
For a "small" database with no downtime constraint you could use Data Pump to move data.
For a "large" database with minimum downtime you could use Oracle Streams (with Enterprise Edition) or Golden Gate (separate product: needs new licensing).
You can find detailed migration/upgrade recommendations and scenarios on OTN database upgrade page:

  • Converting between tables in an Oracle Lite Database

We have a standalone application that uses Oracle Lite. A requirement we have from a new customer is to use their Oracle Lite database structure or to come up with a mechanism that sends the data between the 2 different structures.
Both the structures reside in the same database.
Initial thoughts were to write triggers on both structures that convert the data or to use XML / XSL and treat them as seperate apps.
However, I'm wondering if there is a different way. Do Oracle provide any tools that can help with mapping between 2 different structures that hold the same domain data?
    Anyone got any better ideas?
    Cheers, Matt

  • Client Upgrade issue in Oracle Lite Database 10g 10.3.0.3.0

    Hi all,
Details: My Environment is Oracle Database 11g R1(11.1.0.6.0) With Oracle Lite Database 10g R3(10.3.0.3.0) on Windows 2003 Server R2 SP2.
Recently i have upgrade my oracle lite database from 10.3.0.2.0 to 10.3.0.3.0 and also applied recent opatch (p12812978_103030_Generic.zip). Upgrade and installation of opatch got successfully completed. When i tried the client synchornization for the very first time (FCS and Data Download) FCS and Data Download got Successfully completed but the problem is usually Once the FCS and Data Download Got Completed , Screen goto webtogo home page but in my case i am getting a screen name called "client upgrade" with options yes or no if choose yes it prompting please wait screen nearly for 1 hours i am not getting any response from the screen. if choose no simply it goto my webtogo home page. Please Note before choosing the yes option i have checked what version i am currently having it show 10.3.0.3 i don't know why it asking for the client upgrade. Please Advice me on this how to avoid this screen (Client Upgrade).
    Thanks
    Shan

    Hi,
i am not upgrading the existing environment of Oracle Lite Client i am creating a new environment which doesn't have the Oracle Lite Client. In the document itself they have mentioned like this "These steps assume that you have a 10g Release 1 or 2 Branch Office environment already configured and synchronized. If you do not have this environment currently configured, you do not need to upgrade." To be Clear What i am doing is with help Oracle Lite Branch Office i will be downloading a user from Mobile Server for that i have to do the following
1.FCS(Fresh Client Setup for that i have to run the setup.exe which is coming for Oracle Lite Branch Office) and
2.Data download (Data will be get download from Mobile Server in the form of odb),
    3. Usually Once the FCS and Data Download got completed, the screen will goto the webtogo home there i can see my branch offlice applications.
    4. But in my case i am getting prompted by screen and the screen name called "Client Upgrade" with options yes or no if i choose yes screen got hanged else if i choose no then only screen moving the webtogo home page. Say can u r having existing environment in your machine due to some reasons u have upgrade or u have installed optach on the mobile server in that case while doing the client synchronication we can do the client upgrade by running the update.exe becasue client side will having the old binary file we need to renew it.
    5. But I am not upgrading the existing environment. I am creating a new environment which means i am doing a fresh client setup and synchronization for the very first time. While doing the FCS on my client side for the very first time i will be getting the latest binaries rite then why the screen is moving to client upgarde page i don't have any idea on this.
    Please Advice.
    Thanks

  • Oracle 9i database to oracle 10g rac

    Hi all,
    Here is my situation:
I have a client who wants Oracle 10GR2 RAC with OCFS2 on RHEL5 using FCP and Netapp storage.Till here I am ok, now he has nine different existing oracle 9i database single instance running on various RHEL3 servers, each of these database are small databases of 20-50GB max. Now the client wants the following:
    1. Move all these individual databases to the new RAC servers, which means I will have nine different database and instances.
    2. What is the fastest way to do it, I can get full database shutdown during weekends.
Can I copy these databases to the new rac servers and make a new controlfile, will 10G read the 9i DB from the new locations?
How do I make these db's into a rac instance?
    please help, very urgent.

  • Oracle 10g OCI based application talking to an Oracle 9i database

    Hi all,
Got a question. I have an OCI C++ application that is written using the Oracle 10g OCI includes, etc ... This of course is running on a 10g client. The client OS is actually a Windows x64 system since 10g is the only native OCI client right now for 64 bit Windows systems. So this all works fine. Now, I am communicating with an Oracle 9i database server. Is there anything wrong or invalid about this configuration ? I didn't think that there was but I was asked to confirm this, that is having an Oracle 10g client communicating with an Oracle 9i database. Our application is making very straight forward OCI calls, and we are not using any of the newer OCI calls that were introduced in 10g, just the ones that are available in 9i OCI.
    Thanks in advance,
    Nick

    Thanks for the reply.
Actually I thought that the OCCI forum was for Object oriented OCI, so while I'm using C++, I'm not using the object oriented side of OCI, just using the normal OCI calls. Guess I should have been a little clearer in my original post.
But my main question really concerned the version of the client and the version of the database which you answered.
    Thanks,
    Nick

  • How to Connect to Oracle 9i database server via Oracle 10g XE

I have installed Oracle 10g eXpress Edition and uninstalled Oracle 9i client database. I used Oracle 9i client to connect to another Database server on a local LAN. Is it possible to create a database link to the old Oracle 9i database server via Oracle 10g XE? If yes, do I need to add ODBC drivers?
I want to achieve the following:
    1) Create a connection to the Oracle 9i database server using Ora101040 odbc drivers.
    2) Use a similar 9i tool (Enterprise Management Console) within Oracle 10g XE to access Oracle 9i Database tables on a LAN network.
    3) Create data access to Oracle 10g XE via some ODBC connection from a C++ runtime application.
Hope to receive help from Oracle professionals.
    Thanks.

XE? If yes, do I need to add ODBC drivers?
Database links between Oracle databases do not require ODBC. They do require Oracle Networking (included with both Oracle9i Database and Oracle Database 10g XE) to be configured correctly.
It is also possible to connect ot the 9i database using the 10g Instant Client (separate download)
I want to achieve the following:
    1) Create a connection to the Oracle 9i database
server using Ora101040 odbc drivers. Please clarify - what client do you wish to run that needs ODBC?
    2) Use a similar 9i tool (Enterprise Management
Console) within Oracle 10g XE to access Oracle 9i
Database tables on a LAN network.XE does not have an equivalent to Oracle Enterprise Manager. XE does come with HTMLdb preinstalled and configured, and HTMLdb provides a subset of the administration capabilities of Enterprise Manager.
    3) Create data access to Oracle 10g XE via some ODBC
connection from a C++ runtime application. You can download ODBC drivers from the same location on OTN you downloaded XE. I do not know whether XE includes ODBC drivers. ODBC drivers will usually still require you to configure the Oracle Networking.
There are a number of items that make me believe you do not have a good grasp of Oracle architecture and basics.
