Converting "Apple Lossless" back to "AAC" - More than 1 track at a time...

Hello,
Short version: I have hundreds of tracks that need to "Create AAC Version", and I can't right-click 8,536 songs in my library one at a time to find them all.  Is there a method to sweep the entire library and convert all songs to this format if they are not already?
The problem with this is it still creates a duplicate of the song and the other original needs to be deleted.
Note - the file name changing (it appends a "1" on the M4A file), the "tag" displayed in iTunes retains the song name.
Thanks!,
Joseph
Long version:  For the benefit of people facing the same problem and combing the forums for help, here's the rest of the story...
I'm not entirely sure when this changed (and I've reset my Import settings back to AAC 128-bit now), but I've managed to import a good number of CDs at this higher quality "Apple Lossless" format.  Essentially, that's overkill - I listen to an iPod classic with headphones the majority of the time (98%) and I won't hear the difference.
CHECK:  Edit | Preferences | "General" tab | "Import Settings" button
Essentially my hard-drive space has been disappearing at a rapid rate.  I downloaded a tool (WinDarStat) and found my iTunes folder is 50% of my 200GB used.  (Yes, I'm on an older laptop -- HD=220GB -- and am getting the 'out of space' warnings.)  I found some folders for recent CDs were over 1GB alone and started digging.
I happend to have REM's studio "Man on the Moon" on here twice.  The IN TIME version is AAC 128-bit and only 4.9MB in size, whereas the PART LIES version is Apple Lossless 1068-bit and 8x's larger at 39.9MB.
If you right-click a track, it provides option to "Create [other] version.", depending on going to/from ACC to Lossless or vice-versa.
Once I did this for "Man on the Moon", I got 75% of the song's space back ... from approximately 40MB to 11MB.
It does create a second copy of the song, so the original has to be deleted - be certain to "Move the song to the Recycle Bin" when warned.
A better option - all be it more time consuming - is to re-import the CDs.

For backup see this user tip.
The Create <Format> version tool uses whatever the current import settings are.
You can create a playlist of things that need converting as Ed says above.
To ease the conversion process, and keep your current ratings, playcounts, and playlist membership, plus recyle the old files automatically see my script ConvertFormat. Test on say a single album first to make sure it works as you expect/need.

  • Apple Lossless vs. AAC 256k - and best way to change

I originally imported all my 1500 cds as Apple lossless files figuring that would give me the best audio quality for playing back through my AppleTV. But I have realized that sometimes my bandwidth is not enough (when other are downloading from their computers in the house) and the playback stutters. I also want to be able to fit more songs on my iphone.
So now I am thinking about re-encoding using AAC 256khz - I do not think I can really hear much difference.
Firstly what are your opinion on the relative quality of AAV vs. Apple Lossless files....
and secondly is it best to re-encode by ripping all my cds again (please say no) or can I just select all the lossless files in itunes and have it convert them all to AAC - and if that is the best way how do it do it....?
    Many thanks for your help...

Well, I have the same question. So last night I compared the original CD vs. Apple Lossless vs. AAC 256kbit/s.
And to be honest: I cant really hear a difference between AL & AAC@256.
When I knew which version I was hearing I felt that AL is a bit more clear in the highrange. But when I closed my eyes and asked my girlfriend to randomly pic a quality, I only guessed right in 6 out of 10 trys. So I guess I cant tell the difference.
My heaphones are Audio Technica: http://www.audio-technica.com/cms/headphones/e69d047fa2f50ad9/index.html
    The tested music was electronic/trance & pop/rock.
In case I later start hearing classic music or jazz, I might do this test again.
    Kind regards,

In Apple Mail, I cannot add more than one address to the "To" line by typing just the initial

HHow are you. Trying to add the second address? Normal procedure after the first address is to type a comma, then start typing the name for the second address.

I can no longer download music from itunes store.  It happened when I was trying to download songs dragged into a playlist.  I tried to download more than one at a time.  It stopped.  Now I cant download at all.  Even rebooted my machine.

OK thanks I will try that. I just don't understand why I still can't download new videos as I've deleted the software I installed and I've changed my camera settings back to what they were before when I could download into iPhoto. I perhaps should have mentioned it's iPhoto '08 version 7.1.5. Is there any way of putting iPhoto back as the "default download and view" programme?
It could be as simple as longer (larger) videos - iPhoto does not always handle larger video files well
Is there any way of putting iPhoto back as the "default download and view" programme?
iPhoto is not a download and view program - it is a photo management database program that imports photos - Image Capture is a download program - Preview is a view program
The default program to download your photos is set in the preference panel of either iPhoto or image capture

  • How can I return files in Trash, more than 1 at a time? I can place many files into Trash at a time.

I placed many unix.exe files into Trash, more than one at a time. I recently updated 'QuickTime' and the Mac version of 'SilverLight"
(name might be totally 'correct). I don't know if removing these files can impede my iMac 2008 running OS 10.6.8(updated SnowLeopard).
I know I can 'return' one file from Trash at a time. When I try to return more than one ('mouse click' and 'drag'
over 2 or more files, the'return' option isn't listed. Is there a way I can either 'return all' or return more than one file
    at a time?

Only one at a time. But where are they from? Did you delete system files or are these Windows files (.exe is a Windows extension?)

  • On 4S how can I delete emails more than one at a time in my Inbox

Just got the iPhone 4S (first ever iPhone for me).  When I have emails in my Inbox and I want to delete them is there a way to delete more than one at a time?  I know when I go to the Trash it lets me "delete all".  I get quite a bit of emails and it's a huge waste of time to only be able to delete one at a time in the Inbox.

I'm trying to find a way of clicking one box/area and it deleting all the emails in the Inbox.
It can't be done from the iPhone.  You could use Safari, access your webmail and delete from there, if that's easier.

  • Multiple AirPort Express units - use more than one at a time?

If I connect three Airport Express units in three different rooms, can I use more than one at a time?
Can I choose to only use 2 out of the 3 at one time?
    Thanks.

Yes. With iTunes 6.0.2 or later, you can send an AirTunes stream to multiple remote AirPort Express units, provided that each AirPort Express has the latest AirPort firmware. The maximum number of remote AirPort Express units is three to six in typical conditions. The number that works for you will depend on your environmental conditions (such as building composition and local radio interference), distance to the remote AirPort Express units, and available network capacity relative to your other usage.

  • Why won't Garage band let you open more than one project a time..

Why won't Garageband let you open more than one project a time???? If thats the way its is set up...that is really lame. Even the worst audio programs allow you to run a few projects at a time.
I recorded a gig the other night... then I dumped the whole set on to one track. When I wanted to copy and paste individual songs into their own project it made me close the current project. Is there a way around this???
    Joe

Heh, heh. Yes, this is true. Alas... BUT, if you want to compare one project with another, it can be done.
There is another advantage to making another copy of GarageBand. I created a copy and call it "GarageSymphony" that contains all my instrument specific icons for orchestral packs. This way I do not mess up the GarageBand application.
I would not be surprised to find multiple windows become available in GB4. I was more than pleased to find this change in iMovie 6.

  • Copying/converting apple lossless to aac in a different location?

I have ripped about 1000 cd's or so in apple lossless format to run on a sonos player.
I want to convert those tracks to aac so i can run on an ipod. but i do not want to store them in the same location on NAS.
any suggestions how to do this?
    thanks.

      Windows XP Pro

You can create a new library.
    1. Hold shift when starting iTunes. Choose Create Library and select the location for the new library.
    2. You'll start off with a blank library. Open iTunes Preferences and turn off the option (on the Advanced tab) to copy files to your iTunes library when adding files.
    3. Change the location of your library (also on the Advanced tab) to the place you want to save AAC files.
    4. Set the import prefs.
    5. Add the lossless tracks to the library. (These will remain in their current location)
    6. Convert tracks to aac. These will be in the new library location.
    Hope that helps

  • Itunes match replacing Apple Lossless Files with .AAC

I have coverted my entire music library to apple lossless.. it appears that iTunes Match over time downgrades my music files to 256kbp .AAC files.
Is anyone else seeing this?  How can I get iTunes Match to STOP doing this?

    Michael Allbritton wrote:
iTunes Match does not touch the files on your computer. These files will be "downgraded" only if you delete the original file and download the matched track. The service does not upload ALAC files to the cloud. It converts the ALAC to a temporary AAC file, which is uploaded to listen to on iOS devices. On your computer, the ALAC files stay ALAC.
Hmm, that's interesting because on Apple's iTunes Match page it says (my emphasis):
Which music formats can iTunes Match handle?
You can match or upload music formats that can be played with iTunes. That includes AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, and more.
which clearly suggets that it will upload ALAC to iCloud

  • TM backs up way more than it "Prepares" to back up.

I've been using Time Machine without problem for some weeks now.
Today I plugged the firewire drive into my Powerbook and opened up Time Machine preferences to watch what happened (as is my practice). It did a "Preparing" phase for a normal period of time and then said it was going to back up roughly 7 MB of data. This matched my expectations.
However, when the progress bar and numeric indicator both said it had gotten that far it just kept going!
The progress bar remained at 100% and BOTH the numeric target of how much to backup and the count of how much had in fact been transferred increased together.
By the time it reached 1 GB I decided to check the Console. There were no error messages in the Console. It did however have one oddity. It said that a backup had been requested due to disk insertion (which was correct), and that a "standard" backup had started. And then, shortly after that, there was ANOTHER message that a backup had been requested by the automatic scheduler.
That may be nothing but it was the only odd thing in there.
The backup was still going -- and rather more slowly than I'm used to for large TM backups.
Eventually it completed, having transferred 4.3 GB -- way more than I expected but of course by no means anywhere close to a full system backup.
I checked the Console again and found the normal messages: 4.3 GB transferred, no pre- or post-backup thinning required, nothing deleted.
I did a Disk Utilities Verify Disk on both the main hard drive and the Time Machine drive, as well as a Repair Permissions on the main hard drive. No problems reported.
I rebooted and commanded another backup. This one completed normally having transferred under 1 MB.
So again, the only odd thing I've been able to find was the Console report of the automatic scheduler having requested a backup while a backup was already in progress due to disk insertion.
I poked around in the Time Machine itself and could find no problems with this extra large backup, the one I did after it, or any of the prior history.
So there appears to be no actual damage done, although the size of that backup remains a mystery -- as does why it didn't show up as the target amount after the "Preparing" phase.
And oh, yes, the actual space consumed on my main hard drive has not changed. So I haven't suddenly acquired 4 GB of new stuff somehow. Which means the 4.3 GB backed up must have represented changes of some sort as opposed to new stuff.
I thought that Time Machine might have somehow picked up stuff from another Mac on the LAN, but the Time Machine display does not let you select the shared portion of a networked computer so apparently not.
    Anyway, another TM mystery.
    --Bob

No I've done multiple, hourly incremental backups since the QuickTime update. The size of the first of those backups after applying the update was reasonable given the size of the update and the files likely altered. The incrementals after that were all modest and thoroughly in accordance with the sorts of activities I had been doing.
(For folks reading this after the fact, the backup in question happened BEFORE Apple came out with the 2007-9 security update released later that same day. Also, I've got one virtual environment file -- a Virtual PC file -- but that's around 10 GB so it couldn't have been party to this 4.3 GB mystery backup. And it wasn't touched/modified since the prior incremental anyway.)
The weird thing is the idea that "Preparing" came up with a figure that matched my expectations (around 7 MB), but then the actual backup blasted right past that and just kept climbing to 4.3 GB.
Also, there wasn't anything that I was doing during that backup that might have invalidated the "Preparing" results. I specifically wanted to sit there and watch it complete the backup after I plugged in the firewire disk. I've been looking for cases where the backup appears to get hung up during the data transfer, only to complete after an unexplained pause of a minute or so. So I plugged in the disk, opened Time Machine preferences to see what happened, and just sat there watching it.
In this case the approx. 7 MB declared by "Preparing" transferred without any significant pauses and then I marveled as it just kept going. I didn't actually do anything until it crossed 1 GB, at which point I went to open the Console to see if it had any explanation.
Another significant factor, I think, is that the speed of the transfer was fairly slow. I've done multiple GB Time Machine backups (as when that Virtual PC environment file changes), so I have a feel for how fast this firewire 800 drive will do that. And this 4.3 GB transfer was quite a bit slower.
If I had to guess, I'd say that Time Machine was doing some re-writing of stuff FROM the Time Machine disk TO the Time Machine disk (so that the firewire speeds affected the data transfer twice). But there was nothing in the Console logs that suggest anything like that was happening. Alternatively Time Machine may have been reading data across the network and transferring it to the Time Machine disk. That too would account for the speed difference. But I can find no files in the Time Machine histories indicating that anything like that might have happened.

  • Apple Bluetooth Headset pair with more than one phone?

    HI there,
Is it possible to pair the Apple Bluetooth Headset to more than one phone, obviously not at the same time. (I have an iphone and Sony ericsson phone and need to use it with both.)
    Thanks in advance for help.
    Regards

unlike some of the sony ericssons, the apple headset can only be paired with one phone at a time. that doesn't stop you from repairing it when need be, however...

There used to be a 'buy all' button on the wish list screen but for some reason that has been removed from the current version of iTunes so you will need to buy each item individually. You can try leaving feedback for Apple and maybe it'll be added back in a future update : http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
