Converting audio, do I need to?

I'm doing a project for my family in which I converted 2 hrs and 20 minutes of super 8 and 8mm home movie film to DV. I then imported the DV into Final Cut. There was no audio but I added a commentary track (recorded in Final cut) and a music track comprised of different sources (mp3s, aiff's etc..)
My issue is that I learned that audio in final cut is supposed to be imported as 48 kHz and all my audio sources (except my commentary I am assuming) are 44.1. Is it true that my audio will have distortion and/or pops and clicks when I export? I cannot readily convert and reimport because I have already done a couple hours of edits to the audio (rookie move?). Is there a workaround or does Final Cut 5.0.4 deal with this on render?
Also, what setting would I use to cram 2 hrs 20 mins. plus 2 audio tracks onto a single layer DVD? Or, do I need to go dual layer?

I've experienced unpredictable results with anything but 16bit, 48kHz sound files, and have gotten into the habit of converting anything before bringing it into FCP. Of course, you are trying to preserve your valuable existing edits.
You could also use SoundtrackPro to convert your files in place from the FCP timeline.
Control (right) click on the non-48KHz clips, choose "send to SoundTrack Pro Audio Project". The sound file will open up in STP. Go to File>Save As, then choose the "AIFF File" option. Save the file using the 16bit, 48kHz options, and switch back to FCP.
Control-click on the sound file you're working on, and choose "reconnect media". "Locate" the aiff file you just saved from STP, and it should link to the edited sound file in timeline. (You may have to deselect the checkbox that says "matched name only" when reconnecting the media.) You can verify that the new sound file has the correct settings by control clicking on the clip in the timeline and looking at its Item Properties> Format.
You don't necessary have to use STP to do this, you can use iTunes or QT Pro. The key is reconnecting the media and forcing FCP to relink your edited clips to a properly sampled audio file.
As for the DVD settings, what program are you using to compress the files? DVD Studio Pro has a handy meter that lets you know if you have enough disk space for your footage at current settings. I don't have or ever use iDVD, so can't help you there.
Be sure to look at the other Apple forums for loads of info on DVD compression settings.
Good luck, let me if I've confused you or left anything out.

  • Converting Audio Tips Needed

    Hi All,
I have some older music audio songs that I would like to update (and future protect etc.) Much of the audio is in older formats such as Sound Designer II or AIFF 44/16 or 48/16, so I'd like to update / convert them. I know that the quality will not change going from 16 to 24 bit and it's just larger file with extra zeros etc. but that's ok. Many of these songs will be redone with new 24 bit synths and new 48/24 audio.
MY plan was to convert: 44/16 (Sound Designer II or AIFF)  to  44/16 WAVE
or 48/16 (Sound Designer II or AIFF) to  48/16 WAVE
... so shall I assume that:
    - .WAV is the preferred (future protected) format?
    - Best to just keep the original sample rate?
Am I correct in assuming that old 48/16 audio that is updated to 48/24 will help the associated plugins sound better? I mean will the plugin work at 48/24 even if the audio is 48/16?
Let's say I have 16 tracks of audio at 48/16.
I can go to the audio bin window and select all 16 tracks then say convert to :
    bit = 24
    file format = WAVE
    but what about:
Stereo Conversion = interleaved to split - this is best if I may export to pro tools later - so I may as well do it now - right?
    dither = NONE - right?
BTW: I friend who is an experienced pro tools 'pro' - said he just did this in PT9 HD and suprisingly his old Sound Designer II conversions had random noise that was not on the originals! When he did it again - if there was more noise - that were not in the same place.... THAT SOUND SCARY!
Q: Has anyone ever had this happen with LOGIC 9?
IN ADDITION: when I convert ALL and add to audio bin : IS THERE A WAY to:
*swap ALL the old audio in the arrange window with the NEW converted audio ALL AT ONCE*?
Thanks in advance for your help
    DAVE

    Dave,
A larger bit depth will not make your content sound "better," but it will enhance the processing of sounds. What you want to focus on is the sample rate. A higher sample rate, like a larger bit depth, will not make you sounds "better" per se'. However, when you apply processing (i.e. effects) to a higher sample rate, you have a greater dynamic range of sound at your disposal which a pair of trained ears can pick up on - especially when it comes time for mastering and resampling down to 44.1  after master processing. Make sure you have your dithering set to "Apogee."
As far as what is the "best" sample rate, 48 seems to be the choice over the default 44.1. However, some argue that 88.2 is the best in that it is perfectly halved (44.1 x 2 = 88.2) and because of this, many believe that when a sound has been downsampled back to 44.1 it has a better sonic quality than converting 48 to 44.1.
There is no way that I know of to swap all the audio in the arrange window with the newly converted items. Your best bet is to start from scratch and set you project preferences to your desired higher sample rate. Then when you import sounds, Logic will auto convert them on the fly. Hope this helps.
    Cheers.

  • How-To: Convert audio files to the desired Cisco format (SoX example)

    Greetings,
This week I spent a few hours on converting PCM encoded wave files to CCITT ulaw encoded wave files. You know, the format we all use for UCCX, IP IVR and the like.
I have been searching the interwebs and came across a few suggestions, amongst others:
    o Adobe Audition
    o Audacity
I installed Audition Cs5.5 on my Mac, but it wouldn't let me export CCITT ulaw files.
I also installed Audacity, which would let me export files in the right format, but doesn't support batch conversion of audio files. When you're moving from one voice application to another, this is a huge drawback. For occasional conversion, I would recommend this (graphical) tool.
The solution I have used is the open source software SoX (Sound eXchange) which can be found here: http://sox.sourceforge.net/
It is a cross-platform (Win, Linux, Mac) command line utility that can be use to convert audio files, concatenate them and what not. I just this in conjunction with a perl script I made.
The script is attached, in the hope someone else benefits from it. Should work out of the box on Mac and Linux machines. The script will traverse the $dirname directory (not recursively) and convert what it finds to 8bit, 8kHz, mono, CCITT ulaw format.
By the way, to concatenate files just simply type:
    sox half1.wav half2.wav full.wav
This will concatenate half1.wav and half2.wav and name the resulting file full.wav.
    HTH
P.s: Disclaimer: You might need to edit the script. There is no implied fitness for a particular purpose, YMMV and I shall not be liable for messed up audio files or what not.
    Edit: url added.

    Hi,
welcome to the beautiful world of open source :-) By the way, I have not seen anybody programming in Perl for a long time.
Just one comment: G.711 uLaw is just the half of the story. Remember, UCCX supports either G.711 uLaw or G.729 as well. And since G.729 has license restrictions (costs $10000 per year if I remember that correctly), no free software can incorporate it to its "convert to" list (apart from reading it, which is fine).
A piece of advice: CUCM has got that voice translator service running, which does the job as well. All you have to do is to upload your files, and you'll get at least four formats ready and available, including G.729 - and it can be downloaded easily using TFTP later and used in UCCX.

I want to convert audio to midi.
I know the Melodyne plugin does this...but is there any other way? Can it be done in Logic 9?
Thanks in advance from a potential L9 buyer.

Thought I'd show what you can do with Melodyne cre8.

Single note bass lines work great, but once you have the midi file in Logic, you can create chords or anything else you need in your bass midi track.

  • Converting audio using QT 10

    Hi
How do I convert audio files in QT 10. It was possible in older versions using the export command but that function has gone in this version. Im trying to convert a WAV to AIFF.
    Many Thanks
    Adrian

Quicktime X can't do this.... You need to install Quicktime 7 from your Leopard installation disk, here's how:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3678
And then you need to buy (if you don't already have) the Pro key from Apple's online store:

You can convert the audio file from a WAV to AIFF in iTunes for free.

    Regards,
    Achi

    Sure.
You just need to program a Processor to turn off any video tracks, transcode to a WAV-acceptable audio encoding, and then use a DataSink to store the output of the processor as a WAV file.
Also, I bet the following sample program will do it without any modification...

  • Converting Audio to FCE

I am trying to import a song from iTunes to use in a project, knowing I need to render or convert audio. FCE 4.0 will let import older songs that I put in iTunes some weeks, months ago, but not three songs I've just loaded through a CD. Those newly loaded songs have properties of iTunes 8.0.2 and Quicktime 7.5.5. I wonder if there is something about new iTunes update I recently downloaded that is not allowing me to import them into FCE. Any help on how to get these into FCE would be greatly appreciated. (when I try to import, they show up as faint type and won't allow me to click on them.

All music bought through ITunes is DRM protected ( copy right ) and, cannot be used in FCE.
The music you installed into Itunes via CD is not DRM protected however, copy right laws still apply.
To use the non-DRM music from ITunes in FCE you'll need to convert it to an .aiff format

  • Capturing mono VHS footage, how do I convert audio to stereo?

I am creating dvd's from some old VHS tapes, and the audio track is mono, I want to know how to convert audio to stereo? Do I start with the audio settings on Mono or stereo, and then what is the next step to get mono audio converted to stereo?
As always thanks in advance for reading and replying to my post.

Are you wanting to add a second channel of audio along side the mono track?
Or, are you wanting to double the mon track into a faux-stereo track?
Either way, DO start with a stereo track on your audio settings.
But if your VHS audio is not split into two separate channels of sound, then there is no way to get true stereo.
However, for a faux-stereo sound, try copying the original mono track, paste it to a second audio track then nudge just that track by one frame.
Listen to it and if it doesn't give enough presence to the overall sound, try another frame nudge until you get the sound you like.
This isn't true stereo but will create more of an aural landscape that might satisfy your request.

NO. If you let DVDSP make your encoding you'll get uncompressed audio (AIFF/PCM) what means most probably high bitrate issues during building/playback and a lot of the space of your disc.

  • Convert audio timecode to actual clip timecode in Premiere Pro?

    Hi all,
is there a way of converting an audio recording of a SMPTE-timecode recorded via the camera's line in (TC generated by an ambient tinylockit) into a timecode track or, ideally, replace the video's timecode with the converted audio timecode?
I'm hoping to synchronise footage from two cameras with one external audio via external tc's on both cameras' audios in this way as none of my cameras nor the audio/video recorder I use have SMPTE ins/outs. Cams are Blackmagic Production Camera and Pocket Cinema Camera, external recorder (linked to BMPC) is Sound Devices pix220i.
Blackmagic support site claims there is a way to "translate" (You can then use DaVinci Resolve (9.0.3 and above), Avid Media Composer or Adobe Premiere CC to translate the audio timecode data into an additional timecode track, which can be used for syncing purposes. - see Blackmagic Forum • View topic - Frequently Asked Questions - Audio (Updated: 27/Nov/14)), but I could not find anything in the Adobe manual or forums.
    Many thanks,
    Deniz

    Quinn,
Did you ever get this resolved?  There's a new version of Premiere Clip out there - so you're probably set now.
Have you tried it again since?
I'm looking for Clip to Pr inspirations if you ever want to share.
I'm also trying to figure out how to put together a portfolio to share too.
