Converting audio files to piano roll?

Hi,
I know how to do this in FruityLoops and I think I've found a way in Logic Pro X, but I was wondering if anyone knew how to do it in GarageBand? Essentially, my roommate and I come up with melody lines and little phrases when we're out and about. We record them with our phones, making the noises with our mouths. Usually, we then come home and have to figure out what each note is and play them on a different instrument. I was hoping there might be a way to take audio files of us mimicking instrument sounds, extract piano roll data from that, and then drop that piano roll into different tracks and to be played by different instruments. If anyone can give me some tips on how to do this in GarageBand, I'd be really grateful. I don't have a Windows PC anymore, so I need to figure out how to do it with GarageBand, or else I'll need to pick up Logic.

unfortunately, while Logic Pro X does offer audio to MIDI conversion, GBv10 does not

  • How-To: Convert audio files to the desired Cisco format (SoX example)

    Greetings,
This week I spent a few hours on converting PCM encoded wave files to CCITT ulaw encoded wave files. You know, the format we all use for UCCX, IP IVR and the like.
I have been searching the interwebs and came across a few suggestions, amongst others:
    o Adobe Audition
    o Audacity
I installed Audition Cs5.5 on my Mac, but it wouldn't let me export CCITT ulaw files.
I also installed Audacity, which would let me export files in the right format, but doesn't support batch conversion of audio files. When you're moving from one voice application to another, this is a huge drawback. For occasional conversion, I would recommend this (graphical) tool.
The solution I have used is the open source software SoX (Sound eXchange) which can be found here: http://sox.sourceforge.net/
It is a cross-platform (Win, Linux, Mac) command line utility that can be use to convert audio files, concatenate them and what not. I just this in conjunction with a perl script I made.
The script is attached, in the hope someone else benefits from it. Should work out of the box on Mac and Linux machines. The script will traverse the $dirname directory (not recursively) and convert what it finds to 8bit, 8kHz, mono, CCITT ulaw format.
By the way, to concatenate files just simply type:
    sox half1.wav half2.wav full.wav
This will concatenate half1.wav and half2.wav and name the resulting file full.wav.
    HTH
P.s: Disclaimer: You might need to edit the script. There is no implied fitness for a particular purpose, YMMV and I shall not be liable for messed up audio files or what not.
    Edit: url added.

    Hi,
welcome to the beautiful world of open source :-) By the way, I have not seen anybody programming in Perl for a long time.
Just one comment: G.711 uLaw is just the half of the story. Remember, UCCX supports either G.711 uLaw or G.729 as well. And since G.729 has license restrictions (costs $10000 per year if I remember that correctly), no free software can incorporate it to its "convert to" list (apart from reading it, which is fine).
A piece of advice: CUCM has got that voice translator service running, which does the job as well. All you have to do is to upload your files, and you'll get at least four formats ready and available, including G.729 - and it can be downloaded easily using TFTP later and used in UCCX.

  • Converting Audio files to Midi files.... anyway to do it?

I used to have Opcode Studio Vision Pro and there was an option to convert audio files, like a drum solo or just music, to a midi file so you could take a audio drum pattern and turn it into a midi file and pick your own drum sounds like a TR-909 for the drum pattern.
Is there any function like this in Logic, or perhaps a plug in that will do that? I searched the forum without any luck.
    Thanks

I haven't seen anything like this, but...
For Guitar's mainly... if you plug your guitar into a good pedal which has a midi out set up, you can plug it into your mac and record by playing the guitar using midi... then you can edit it.. works same way as keyboards... I expect you can do the same with drums if you used digital, i'm not sure.
    hope this helps

  • Is there a way to convert audio files with the new PlayForSure software sui

When I use the old Media Source Audio Converter and transfer the wma file to my Zen I get a message that the audio codec is not supported. I don't think my Media Source plug ins for PlayForSure devices are working or something.

The exact error message is: "The audio file format is not supported or exceeds the playback capability of this device." Then when you click on "More Information" it says: Codec 0X62 is not supported.
This is retarded man, maybe if Creative would release software THAT ACTUALLY WORKED with their frigging devices they would sell more MP3 players.

  • Converting audio files in iTunes to play on iPad 4

I used iTunes 11.1.1 to convert a MPEG file to an AAC file.  After the conversion, in iTunes the file kind shows "AAC audio file".  The actual file extension shows .m4a when I look at it in Finder.  It still will NOT sync with my iPad 4 ... why?  What am I doing wrong?

Don't buy software peddled by spammers in support forums.
    It's usually garbage.
M4a is a valid file type for AAC audio.
What happens when you try to sync it?

Try "Easy CAF Converter for Logic Pro" on the Mac App Store.
    According to an app description,
"The Easy CAF Converter for Logic Pro automatically converts Apple Loops installed with Logic Pro 9 and X to uncompressed audio formats (aiff and wave).
With the Easy CAF Converter for Logic Pro, musicians using other major DAWs (e.g., Cubase, ProTools, Ableton Live, and Studio One, etc.) can now easily use the rich set of apple loops of Logic Pro in their music productions."

  • Converting Audio Files to AAC format

I have a mix of MPEG and AAC files in iTunes. Is there an advantage to converting all files to AAC?

YOGenereally, you shouldn't convert from a lossy format AAC or MP3) to another lossy fomrat.
It's called loss because you lose information when you convert it.
If you only use these files on the computer and the iPod, I'd recommend AAC. Better quality at same bit rate as MP3.

  • How can I convert audio files from Windows Media player to WMV?

I am unable to add a soundtrack if it is a WMA file.  What programs are best to convert files to WMV?

If you are wishing to add the WMA soundtrack to a PrE Project, I would convert/rip the WMA to PCM/WAV 48KHz 16-bit, and then Import that WAV file into the PrE Project. Drag it to a free Audio Track. Though there is a Soundtrack Track, some users have had issues with it. Any free Audio Track, with the necessary channel-count is likely to work better.
For the conversion/ripping, there are many programs that can do this for you. I use Adobe Audition, but the great, free Audacity can do it nicely, as well.
As WMA can have aspets, like 6-channel Audio, wrapped in the WMA, I like doing the conversion, unless I need, say the 6 discrete channels in Audition, for output to DTS Audio with the SurCode DTS encoder program.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Convert audio files from 256kbps tot 1411kbps

I would like to know if i gain any extra music quality (depth, clarity etc.) by converting my music files in Itunes from 256kbps to 1411kbps (WAV)
Apple Lossless format seems to be good to.
I read somewhere that converting in Itunes from 256kbps to a higher kbps format only adds extra bites. The extra quality isn't there however...
Has anyone got an opinion about this stuff?
    Greetings Harry (Holland)

No, you don't. The music needs to be originally imported at the higher bitrate to get the benefit of it; this isn't possible for iTunes Store music.

  • Converting Audio files into a format Final Cut can recognize

    Final Cut Express 4
    Ladies and Gentlemen,
In a previous discussion I noted that Final cut would not allow me to hear imported mp3's and mp4a's in the editing timeline, therefore, my question is:
What are some programs that will offer me the ability to convert mp3 or mp4a files into a AIFF 48k?
    thanks,
    http://www.youtube.com/user/Judadiah

I would recommend Audacity, a free recorder and transcoder, available here:
    http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Audacity® is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems.

  • Script to batch convert audio files with recycle

    hi,
i have zero knowledge of scripting and am looking for help automation the processing of my audio loops with recycle. i would be willing to pay someone if they could create this for me.
    quincy

It looks like you're going to have a tough time scripting 'ReCycle,' as the application does not appear to support AppleScript natively. Worse, the interface uses very few standard Aqua interface elements, so any GUI AppleScript written would be limited almost exclusively to what can be achieved with the menubar.
GarageBand isn't scriptable either, but Soundtrack Pro is. QuickTime Pro can also be used to do quite a lot with regard to copy/cut/paste/conversion. I'm hireable, just call.

    Hi,
I use Switch File Audio Convertor from NCH Software to do this.
It is a commercial product but there is a time limited evaluation and if you decide to keep it it is only $30.

It is great for converting audio files to the correct format for music on hold as well.

  • Logic not opening 64-bit 48khz audio files.

I recently tracked drums at a studio thatuses Cakewalk Sonar 6. The audio files are consolidated (into 16 54 minute strips) and on my hard drive now, but Logic will not open them for some reason. I have my Mac and Logic in 64-bit mode. When I try to import the files, it changes the session to a 48khz session. Anybody have this sort of problem before?

If your files are 24bit / 48khz, (as originally recorded)... all good (you can check in the "Audio Bin" window where this info is displayed). As above, Logic will automatically switch the session to match the file rate, but if it is converting your audio files unintentionally, you need to un-check "Convert audio file rate when importing" (File> Project Settings> Assets> Assets : "Convert audio file rate when importing").
If your files are still not opening, it could be a Sonar export / compression issue - maybe best to check with the studio you tracked at?
