Converting .BUP. IFO and .VOB files

Hello,
I have a dvd of my high school football that when you insert it into a DVD player or into a computer using DVD Player on the Mac it plays fine. However, when I try to rip the files using MactheRipper or Handbrake it stays in .BUP .IFO and .VOB files. I want to know if anyone knows how I can somehow convert these files or get them into iMovie so that I can edit them. The videos don't have sound files, in case that matters.
Thanks

You're viewing multiplexed DVD-Video data (this is called "muxed" for short). As such, it is in a format that is for playback only.
You'll need to demultiplex (or "demux") the data stream to something you can edit.
Mactheripper only copies DVD-Video data and provides no demultiplexing.
Handbrake effectively converts DVD-Video data to other play only formats (like MPEG4 for your iPod).
DVDxDV (and DVDxDV Pro) is a software application meant for doing just what you are trying to do ($50 to $80, depending on the version you purchase).
Also, if you have Roxio Toast, you can use it to export the multiplexed video stream to something that you can edit ($100, but you can often find it on sale or with a rebate).
Whatever application you find to do this, DV-NTSC QuickTime is a good choice to convert to. It's the same format you would have after capturing digital video from MiniDV tape. It's the same frame size and frame rate as MPEG2 NTSC, just a different compression type (DV/DVCPro-NTSC rather than MPEG2).
Avoid extracting the DVD-Video stream to MPEG2. This might get you something that can be played with QuickTime (if you have the MPEG2 playback component installed), but it's not a compression type for editing.

  • QT and .vob files

I received some video files from my bro's sony dvd video camera. The files associated with the videos are .bup, .ifo, & .vob. I can't get the videos to play. Not sure if I can.
    Any ideas?

I did what you said and QT does play the video files now. Problem I have now is that there is no sound with the files.
And what did you do? Are you plying the files in MPEG Streamclip or the QT Player? If you converted the files, then to what compression format. VOB (M2V/AC3) files are not natively supported by QT. Adding the the QT MPEG-2 Playback component only allows playback of the MPEG-2 video content -- not the AC3 audio. You can play the files in MPEG Streamclip, but if you want to play them in QT, you much convert the files to a fully supported audio and video compression format. For instance, you can have MPEG Streamclip convert the VOBs to MPEG (multiplexed M2V/MP2) files which will then play with audio in the QT Player (assuming the files contain audio).

  • WMP and VOB files via web site

I have created a web page that will list cover images all of my backed up DVD's that I have on an external hard drive and each cover images is linked to the first VTS_01_1.VOB file for that DVD.
I am testing the page to see how it works for each device I have.  The page works flawlessly with my Samsung tablet, the player I have installed on the tablet will automatically go from VTS_01_1.VOB to VTS_01_2.VOB and so on until movie is
    done.
If I use my Windows 7 pc & IE 8, WMP will open and play the VTS_01_1.VOB and stop at the end of that file, how can I get WMP to continue to the next file automatically?
I have also tried placed the file VIDEO_TS.IFO & VTS_01_0.IFO in the link and then my tablet will not play it and WMP will not open and play it also.  When I use this link in IE I will get a dialogue box asking if I want to save or
open, I select open and WMP will open and then give me a message "The selected file has an extension (.IFO) that is not recognized by Windows Media Player, but the Player may still be able to play it. Because the........  Do you want the Player to
try to play this Content? YES / NO.
I select YES and then I get a dialogue box "WMP cannot play the file.  The player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.
So why will WMP work if I double click the file on the pc directly in the folder and not via the web page?

WMP access files present in a particular folder, the order in which the IFO file or linked VOB file is desinged. However, when it comes to webpage, WMP treats the location as remote and hence will not proceed to next file automatically, even if linked in
the IFO file. This is a security feature to avoid any execution of code from unknown source.
I can suggest adding the VOB file in a playlist, like ASX file, and that file will be opened by WMP and navigation between different VOB files is possible.

  • How do I import an old home movie on DVD into iMovie with video_ts content and .vob files

Hi, as a new mac user I would appreciate any help to use imovie to import an old home movie on DVD with movie_ts content and .vob

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

If you are running Lion or later:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. (The same applies to Mountain Lion and Mavericks even though they have it preinstalled.) You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Which is the better converter for mts and mpg files?

Ok, I just have a quick question regarding conversion software. Does anyone know which is better...PAVTUBE or CLIPWRAP2? Besides the cost...pavtube is cheaper. Which one is faster and offers the best quality? OR is there even a better one out there? I have mts files and mpg files I'd like to convert for use in FCP 6.

    ClipWrap2.

  • Quicktime and VOB files

I am trying to export a vob file (legal, it's my production) as a quicktime so that I can edit in FCP. My problem is that I can only play back the first 19 seconds of my 28 minutes of media when opened in quicktime. I recently downloaded OpenShiiva and was able to encode an Xvid, but even as a QT movie it will not import into FC. Any ideas?

Well, a search here would find lots of ideas.
    1. Buy Apple MPEG-2 component for QT
    2. Use (free) MPEG Streamclip to open VOBs, correct timecode errors.
    3. With Streamclip, Export to DV (or any QT format but DV makes sense for editing)
    4. Use in FC or iMovie.
Note the 19 seconds is 99.9% due to timecode errors. The data is broken up and MPEG-2 depends on timecodes so you fix those as above. Then you will see all 28 minutes.
Also note had you been able to export more than 19 seconds you woudl have lost all the audio.

  • Converting claris draw and Macdraw files

For those who come here asking about how to use your claris draw and macdraw files in OS X, here's another option for converting them. Intaglio from Purgatory Software claims to be able to open those files ( for macdraw I think it's just II/Pro files). Haven't tried it myself. (For anyone who has Freeway, I believe there is a discount on Intaglio, although it is still an expensive option if you aren't looking for a drawing program, too.)

  • Final Cut Pro X and .vob files

    Hi
How do I import a .vob file into Final Cut Pro X?
I use an iMac with Mavericks installed.
    Thanks

    Hi Tom
I've just read through an old post from May 2013 on this forum you answered, found here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5010061?start=0&tstart=0
If I have to use the 1.9.3b8 version of MPEG Streamclip where do I get the QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg component from? Do I purchase from apple (will Mavericks let me install?) or is there somewhere else I should get the file from?
    Many thanks

  • How can I get IFO, BUP and VOB files to play on my iPad

I have a DVD of my vacation that a friend made using iMovie. But I can't get it to load on my iPad to play. Any idea how to do this cheaply?

    You don't.
Those are DVD format files and are not playable on any ios devices.
You will have to use handbrake to convert the video on the dvd to a compatible format.

  • Converting DVD's to VOB files

Does anybody know of a program (preferably free) for Macs that will rip DVD's to VOB format, similiar to DVD Fab for Windows, so that I can either burn a copy of the DVD without having to convert it first or just store it on the hard drive?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

__You can just drag the VIDEO_TS folder to your hard drive. If it is copy protected, this of course will not work.__
Yes, this is exactly what I wanted. I found a program and tried it but unfortunately it didn't work because of copyright or whatever.
When I use DVD Fab, I can just rip a dvd and navigate the "destination" to a spot on the hard drive instead of to the dvd drive for copying. Then when I open up the movie folder, two subfolders named Video TS and Audio TS are in there. I can point a program like VLC to that folder and play it just like a real DVD, or burn a copy if I so choose. It's really convenient and I was hoping to find a similar program for Mac.
    thanks for the replies!

  • How to play VIDEO_TS.VOB files?

I have a tv show that I would like to watch on my MacBook Air. I inserted the DVD in my external dvd drive and an image of a cd showed up on my desktop. I opened it and it had two folders (AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS). The AUDIO_TS folder is empty but the VIDEO_TS folder has .BUP, .IFO , and .VOB files. I bought the show online and I checked their FAQs and it says that all their DVDs are Region Free and will work in any country and can be played on any computer and dvd player. It works fine on my blu ray player but I want to watch it on my MBA, how do I do that?

Never mind. Got it played on the built in DVD Player app.

  • How can I convert a home movie on dvd(vob file) to edit on imovie?

I had home movies converted to a dvd- the files are vob. Now I want to edit the movies in imovie.
I am having a difficult time converting from vob straight to mov files.
I purchased Quick Time Pro thinking that could do it, but I haven't been able to.
Also, it just says QuickTime Player Version 7.6.4 (518.35) on my computer.
Is it supposed to say QuickTIme Pro?
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

The "Pro" option just unlocks a lot of features in QuickTime Player. If you look at the registration info, it will show if you have Pro installed.
For converting DVD's you have two options; hardware or software.
The hardware option involves connecting a DVD player's analog outputs to a qualified "DV device" (DV camcorder, VTR or converter) then connecting the DV device's Firewire port to your Mac to capture the footage.
The software option involves using an application like DVDxDV or MPEG Streamclip to convert the DVD's VOB files into an editable format that works natively with your chosen NLE.
