Converting digital 8 to whatever iMovie 11 recognizes for editing

I am interested in converting digital 8 tapes and mini-dv tapes to whatever iMovie 11 needs to allows importing for editing.  At first I thought converting to a DVD would do it, then talked to a DVD converting company which suggested itmis far better converting to a flash drive instead.  How/where is this done?

Agreeing with Klaus, you can import directly from Digital 8 and minDV to imovie. That is far better than getting it off a DVD.
You will need a Mac with Firewire, and you will need a Firewire Cable.
If you have Firewire 400 (older Macs) you need a 6 pin to 4 pin Firewire cable. If you have Firewire 800 (newer Macs), new need a 9 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable.
Cables are available for a reasonable price at http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10301

consider usage of a diff. editor.. iMovieHD6, you're entitled for a free downlaod at apple.com:

Can you be more specific  FCP can create optimized footage in app after import for editing if that is what you need. If you need to literally covert it than running it through compressor should do the trick. Or you could download the avid codecs for your mac and maintain your original footage. http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Download/en392959?popup=true

  • Moving an iMovie project file for editing on a different iMac

Does anyone know if an iMovie project file started on one iMac can be saved to a usb drive or dvd/cd to be opened on another iMac computer to continue editing? What I have done before is go to: movies>iMovie projects>selected file and save the selected file to a usb drive. I also save the pictures and voice overs/music files that I used with the iMovie project on the same usb drive. However, when I open the iMovie project file on another iMac all of the work that I had previously done is not there. I end up starting all over. I would like to start my project at home and do any finishing touches on the second iMac in order to decrease the time I have to spend at the second location. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

When you move files to your second iMac, they need to be in the EXACT location. If you have your videos and photos in a folder on your desktop named "Movie Stuff," and you just throw them into a folder in documents called "Stuff" on your second iMac, iMovie will not recognize the files. You need to create the same path as the first iMac. In this case, you would have to make a folder called "Movie Stuff" on your second iMac's desktop, and move the files there.
    Hope this helped!

  • Best way to convert home movie VHS tapes so they can be edited in iMovie HD

Please help! I'm sorry this question is going to be long, but I'm a novice at this.
My goal is to get my VHS home movies (I have about 30 of them) into iMovie so I can do two things.
First I want to burn DVD's so I'll have a copy of the VHS tapes before they go bad.
Secondly, I want to be able to extract small clips from all of the tapes and combine them in a new iMovie project.
Here's what I've done so far:
I purchased a Canopus ADVC110 and got someof my VHS tapes converted digitally but the file sizes were HUGE and eating up my hard drive space. I was down to 6 GB of space left on my hard drive and almost crashed my Mac.
I deleted all these huge files and got my Mac back up to having 111 gigs of space left. Whew!
This week I purchased a Pinnacle converter and started all over. I took a VHS tape, and it was compressed into a nice small Mpeg-4 file and went to iTunes.
Then I tried to drag and drop it from itunes to imovie. That didn't work. I then dragged the movie to my desktop and then dragged it to imovie..... looks like this was going to take a long time to get into imovie. I'm thinking this is too many steps.
Now I am importing the file into iMovie by importing directly from itunes. The file size is 1.04 GB and it is 1 hour and 54 minutes long. It is taking a loooong time to import this movie....like 100 minutes.
I am afraid I am doing this the hard way.
Plus, after reading all the discussion boards and all the problems people are having... I don't even know if I'll be able to successfully edit this movie once it's imported. Plus, after I've edited it (if I can) will I be able to transfer the clips to another iMovie project?
I'm happy with the file size that the Pinnacle converter is giving me. I'm happy with the way the movie appears in itunes.
Because I have **so many VHS tapes** to convert, I'm asking you all if there is an easier way for me to complete this task!
Thanks in advance for any advise. Keep in mind that I'm not tech-sophisticated..... just a middle aged Grandma trying to preserve memories of my family!

    _Share" the highlight as suggested_
Thanks Lennart..... I'm not sure I know what you meant by the above.
Do you mean that I share the little clips I want to use in the 'best of project'?
I read the MacWorld article.... it's great thanks!
I want to keep all these converted movies on my hard drive because down the road I want to extract other clips from them so I can make a 'best of' movie for my other family members. I may want to do that next year.... or whatever..... so I want to have the imovies available for me when that time comes.
In order to do this am I going to have to buy a lot..... and I mean ALOT of extra hard drive space? That darn Canopus was really making files for me that were like 60-80GB's per one half hour movie!!
Hey, I really appreciate all the time you are spending with me on this topic. Making these imovie memories are so very important to me.

  • How can I get iMovie to recognize the external camera?

iMAC running OSX 10.6.8 recognizes external HD Camera hardware, but iMovie fails to recognize the device.  I can copy files "manually" using Finder, but cannot import them directly into iMovie.  How can I get iMovie to recognize the camera?  I have already re-booted all devices and tried multiple USB ports.  In all cases the OS recognizes the camera, but iMovie does not.

OK This camcorder is a fine camcorder. I have an earlier model of a similar camcorder from Panasonic. However, this newer model has one problem. It is not compatible with iMovie if you shoot at the highest quality mode, (which is 60P or 50P - which might be called 28MBPS mode). If you shoot 30P or 30i (even 60i) it will import to iMovie. Also, iMovie can handle 1280x720P60 and P50.
It will definitely work on iMovie 11. It should probably work on iMovie 09. I doubt this camera will be recognized at all on iMovie 08, but it is worth a try. To see which iMovie you have, click iMovie/About and check the version. 9.04 would be iMovie 11. (9.08 is the current version, but it will not run on OSX 10.6.8). 8.06 would be iMovie 09. 7.1.4 would be iMovie 08.
OK So how to work around this limitation?
    1) If you have Final Cut Pro X ($300) or can justify buying it, it will import 60P and 50P from this camera. However, if this seems a little pricey to you, keep reading.
    2) If you set your camera to record in 1080P30 and shoot a short clip, then iMovie should see the camera. Then I would suggest using iMovie import screen to create a CAMERA ARCHIVE of your camera. This will copy to your Mac the entire contents of the video files on your camera. You will need them later. I am assuming you have some valuable footage on the camera that you would like to have.
    3) Going forward, the simplest thing is to shoot in 1920x1080P30 and use iMovie normally. The biggest advantage of P60 or P50 is when you need really high quality slow motion effects. In other words, after you edit your movie, everything is converted to P30 or P25 anyway.
    4) If you want to retrieve the 1080P50 or 1080P60 clips that you have shot, then there are a couple of apps you can buy to convert them to a form that iMovie can edit. Two such apps are ClipWrap and Voltaic HD. There are also various free apps, but I cannot vouch for them. Do a search on google and you may find some that work.

  • Convert digital waveform to array

    Hello,
I posted a problem before Christmas regarding data acquisition and accessing the hardware buffer on a 6562 card. I managed to figure out that problem but now I'm stuck when I try manipulating the data I obtain. (The original problem can be seen here: http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=70&thread.id=7926)
Briefly, my application is clocking and synchronising an ADC board and then looking at the raw ADC data that comes back from the board. To provide synchronisation I am sending a sync pattern on one data line and using a second line to send a "start of frame" indicator, a '1' bit when I know that the board is synchronised. This line otherwise only sends ‘0’s. This cable is wired back into the NI card and LabView. All data sent uses the NI-SHDIO Generation Express VI and I'm using the Acquisition Express VI in parallel with the Generation VI to capture the raw ADC data when it comes off the ADC board. Since I am acquiring both the ADC data and the frame indication data (which I am looping by connecting that output DIO to an input DIO), the digital waveform essentially contains 2 arrays and I can view these from a graph indicator within LabView.
No problems so far. In order to manipulate the data and look at individual frames I am writing the ADC data to file. To extract the digital data from the digital waveform I am using the following VIs:
    -Get Waveform Components
    -Get Digital Data Components
    -Write to Binary File
To view and manipulate the data I read it into Matlab and this is where I can tell that something's not right. When I read the file into a variable in Matlab, the variable becomes a 1D double array of 40,008 elements. This seems very odd, considering the Acquisition VI only takes 20,000 samples. When I look at the 1D array more closely it looks like the two arrays have been cross added in some fashion. The 1D array certainly doesn't match either of the two arrays visible in the graph indicator inside LabView. I can understand if the file is reading one array after the other (20,000 + 20,000 almost equals 40,008 after all) but that doesn't appear to be the case.
I would greatly appreciate some help on how I can extract the two data lines either using Matlab or LabView. Currently it looks like LabView is making a hash of things whenever I try to manipulate or extract the two arrays from the digital waveform. I have tried a multitude of different VIs and ideas but nothing appears to work.
The most straight forward way would be using the "Converting Digital Waveform to Binary VI" but it can't handle two arrays within the same waveform. (The result looks like the two arrays exclusively OR’d together). To combat this I tried running two Acquisition Express VIs in parallel (one for ADC data, the other for the frame info) but got an error message referring to invalid handles. I presumed this meant that I can't run two acquisition VIs simultaneously, judging from forum posts of users facing the same error message.
Sorry for the long post but I feel that I needed to fully explain the problem. I'm attaching my LabView code.
    Thank you for reading,
    Christian
PS. GenAcq2.vi is my code. Waveform_GenAcq2_Cfg.hws is sent by the first Generation VI; Waveform_GenAcq2_shorter_frame_indicators.hws by the second Generation VI.

The extra "8" is being caused by the fact that the "Write to Binary File" VI has a "prepend array or string size" input. Its default is true, and in your case you have it unwired, so you get the array size prepended. As for the rest of your issue, what are your Matlab commands to read a file? The following example VI, which generates a digital waveform and saves it to file,
can be correctly read into Matlab using the following commands:
    fid = fopen('c:\temp\digData.bin','r');
    F=fread(fid, [256,8], 'uchar');

  • Converting digits from display to tactile vibrations

I would like to get a pulse or pulses for the some output.. i.e. i need to convert digital output (i.e. clock display to tactile display (vibrations)) if the clock or any display, displays 345, then i would have three switches on my module, i switch on the first, and it
will vibrate three times, basically there will be three pulses from the square wave, and current will go through the motor three times vibrating it three times. Same as when i put on the second switch, it
would vibrate 4 times, and then the 3rd switch, it would vibrate 5 times. You can also ask your professor for some help please

Sorry about my first post guys, The reason its soo wide, and please disregard the part that states
"professor who I can ask for some help please" i felt lazy and decided to cut and paste this question
earlier.. Anyway.. this is my situation.. I have a school project, and I need some help. It has been a
very long time since i used LabVIEW so I am not very familiar with it. I am trying to work on a program
in labview.. or rather trying to create a program on labview that would allow me to read a digital
display as vibrations. I have a DAQ, and I have labview software. the scenario is.. Suppose I have a
clock, or a podometer, I would like to come up with a program and later on a gadget that could convert
the numbers i see on the display as vibrations. for an example: if the display on my podometer reads
121, then on my gadget i would have 3 buttons, and when i'd press the first button, the unit (gadget)
would vibrate once, and then when i would press the second button, it would vibrate twice at regular
short intervals, and when i press the third button, it would vibrate once again. Now I know i have to
use something like a square wave that would give me pulses, ofcourse i'd attach my unit to a vibrating
motor, and the pulses would act as current going through the motor. Please help. once again, I am sorry
    for the first post.

I recently purchased QuickTime 7 Pro to convert avi files to mov files for editing on Imovie. However, QuickTime won't play the files. How can I get them to play and how can I convert them to mov files?
Both the AVI and the MOV file extensions refer to the file container and not the compressed data the file contains. Both are generic file containers in that each may contain any valid combination of audio and/or video data that is compatible with the codec component configuration of the system on which the file was created. On the other hand, whether a file is playback compatible, conversion compatible, and/or edit compatible depends on the data actually contained in the file container. So, you are basically dealing with two separate issues here—the container and what is inside it.
Basically, if you want to make your files ediit compatible with iMovie, you must change your file container to one that is acceptable to iMovie and convert the data to edit compatible audio and/or video compression formats as may be necessary. The best approach is to determine what codecs were actually used to create the original AVI files and add them to your system if possible. In most cases a codec package like Perian can be added to your system's codec component configuration to may the AVI file playable. Once they are playable, in the QT 7 app then they can be chnged or converted to file types and compression formats that can be edited in iMovie. (While Perian handles most codecs commonly used to create AVI files, it does not handle all possibilities and, while the Perian codec package still works under cureent Mac OS versions, its development group has decided to drop further development/support of the package.)
Background: AVI is a file container originally developed by Microsoft back in 1992 but for which official support was discontinued about 11 years. Despite its limitations, Windows users still tend to use this file based on its open source ease of use and generic nature, thus, making its use so popular that most users are unwilling to switch to more modern but less generic file types. Since some AVI legacy compression formats have never been transcoded for the Mac or use beyond OS 9 or OS X PPC platforms, it is often important to know what specific compression formats are contained in the AVI file to know which codecs to add to your system and which not to add in order to avoid possible codec conflicts.
You can use many different converters to convert AVI files to iMovie edit compatible files. Most third-party apps contain their own buit-in codecs which do not relay on the Mac codec component configuration. Free ones, like HandBrake, usually have limited conversion capabilities while those that have more varied outputs are usually commercial in nature and will cost you additional cash. QT 7 Pro or the free MPEG Streamclip app allow you to access you own system's component configuration and use any available codec component like DV, AIC, MPEG-4, H.264, Photo JPEG, etc.—all of which are iMovie compatible for editing purposes—but only after making the AVI file QT 7 player compatible.
In order to determine what compression formats wewre used in your AVI files you can
    1) Try checking the Finder "Info" window,
    2) Use the "Inspector", "Media Info", or "Properties" window of any player app that will open the file, or
    3) Use a general media utility app like "MediaInfo" to read the file characteristics.

  • How to make iMovie 09 recognize a mounted disk image?

I'm trying to store video clips in a disk image (Mac OS Extended - Journaled, single Apple Partition Map). Previously in iMovie 08 all I had to do was mount the image, start iMovie and it would recognize it as an additional drive. Then I could drag events to it and store them there. In 09 this does not work. It sees the image but has the yellow triangle/exclamation point in it. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make it recognize the image! I've tried all variations in disk utility to create the image to no avail. Is iMovie 09 looking for a certain file on the disk image to recognize it? Maybe something in the DS_Store file or the .localized? Very frustrating.
    Hoping someone can help. Thanks.

    sudo mdutil -i on
After typing the single space, drag the mounted disk image icon from the Desktop into the Terminal window, click inside the Terminal window, and then type <Return>.  Enter your admin password at the prompt (it will not echo on the screen),  and again type <Return>.
Hopefully that will enable Spotlght indexing on the mounted image. It might take some time to complete depending on the contents.
The result for this for me, three times, was "Indexing disabled."

  • How to convert and import MTS files from my Sony NEX 10e into iMovie for editing?

    Hi, dear all,
I have hard time to bring in my footage shoot using Sony NEX 10e camcorder into iMovie 11 for editing. Is there anyway I can convert these MTS files foe editing in IMovie 11?
    Thanks in advance!!
    Kevin

Some frame rates and resolution combos will not import into iMovie directly. That's true. For instance, 1920x1080 @ 60 progressive frames per second (meaning not interlaced), that is not compatible with iMovie and you might need to convert it using a program like ClipWrap. Also if you have just the 'bare' .mts files, iMovie will not be able to import those either. iMovie expects to find all the folders and auxiliiary files recorded onto the memory card when you shoot AVCHD video. It needs all those extra pieces to navigate to the video clips and subsequently convert them from .mts to Apple Intermediate Codec. So in the case where you have a 'bare' .mts file use Voltaic HD to do the conversion.
