Converting DVD unit into a HD bay on G560

Did anyone try to switch the DVD unit in G560 with a HD replacement, e.g. this one:
http://www.akasa.co.uk/update.php?tpl=product/product.detail.tpl&no=181&type=Enclosures&type_sub=2.5...
I'm just curious as to how it fits into the bay, and whether having another hard-disk there doesn't add too much vibrations and overall power drain to the system.

Some comments that may help clear the air and help you in the future:
iMovie is a DV editor. It can rapidly import DV STream from tape to computer. These are nearly "raw" data (for a lack of a better word) and measure 13 GB's per hour.
DVD's use MPEG-2 format. A two hour (26 GB .dv file) can be compressed to fir on just one 4.7 GB DVD. Key word here is compressed. Some data is lost from your nearly raw source file.
You can use the MPEG-2 files (additional software and $20 spent) but they will need to be converted back to DV Stream (4.4 GB's back to 26 GB's). This takes a long time and lots of hard drive space. And the quality is not as good as a "tape" version.
Tapes are cheaper than blank DVD's. Not as easy to keep organized.
An option you may want to consider is using your DVD media as "data" and not convert to MPEG-2. Much faster process (no conversion) and this data will still be DV Stream so it will be the same as if it came from tape.
Your DVD's will hold only about 20 minutes of video as data .dv files. These files can be previewed in QuickTIme Player (converted using the Pro upgrade), used in iMovie and even be used by PC's using Windows Movie Maker software.
From iMovie make a 15 minute "chunk". You can do some basic editing but do not use and special effects or transitions on the "raw" footage.
Export this to "Full Quality" QuickTime file to your Desktop.
Pop in a blank DVD and drag this QuickTime .dv file onto it. Drag the disc icon to the Trash and it will change to the "Burn" symbol and burn your DVD.
Delete the QT .dv file (to save HD space) and the iMovie Project file.

  • How can I convert DVD- video into Apple's format so that it can be played and streamed from my Mac?

How can I convert DVD- video into Apple's format so that I can play the content on my Mac and also stream it to my Apple TV? A few years ago, I transferred all of my home videos onto DVD but now would really like to put these onto my Mac and stream them through Apple TV to watch on the "big screen". Any advice would be most welcome!! Thanks

    MPEG Streamclip.
Apple do not have their "own" format. You need to convert your DVDs to H.264 though.

  • Converting dvd vidoes into a .mov format

If I convert my DVD videos into .mov format files for the web, will the Quicktime player or plug in be the only available player to open these files. Basically what I am asking is does everyone have to have the Quicktime player or plugin available to open these files?

.mov is a container file form, not a compression type. You can use any one of dozens of compressors for a .mov file. Widely used are mpeg-4 and Sorenson 3. Those will both play in QT 6. H264 is also being used a lot but it requires QT 7 to be installed.
By the way, the QT mpeg2playbackcomponent will not export mpeg-2 format. It is playback only. Also, note that QT will not export sound from muxed files like mpeg-1 or mpeg-2. This freeware will export to various formats with the sound included. Note that there are both Windows XP and Mac versions of this freeware. Mpeg StreamClip

  • ITunes makes my CD's small. How Can I convert DVD's into a small file too?

I bought my wife an iBook and would like her to be able to watch a movie just like she does the music. I've used Mac the Ripper to get it onto the computer, but I don't want it to be a 4 GB or more file. I've been able to use Matinee to select them, but isn't there a way to make them into the equivilant of an MP3... am I thinking of an MPEG 4.
If so, is commercial software the only way available to do this.... I have Quicktime Pro 7. Does that do the conversion?
Thanks, I hope this is a clearly written question.
    Dave

you can export using the export from the menu in quicktime.
But if you want to re-encode a DVD you could use something like Forty Two
    http://www.kaisakura.com/fortytwo.php
For similiar apps do a search on versiontracker.com
That creates a gorgeous 700-1 GB divx (mpeg4)

  • Still no sound when converting DVD into Ipod

I'm using Videora to convert DVD's into my Ipod. The sound is not coming out but the movie is. I read the article going around about Muxed files, but this is not the case. I have converted this movie about 3 times. Does anyone else have this problem?

Interestingly enough, when I used Videora to convert DVDs, the movie's audio was replaced (twice, two different completely separate movies) with two mens' voices, while they were chatting about the movie. So, I had to download the movies I wanted via LimeWire, and convert those. That's my only suggestion to you...either that, or spend about $40 on CuCuSoft (really great, you won't regret it).

  • When converting dvds to ipod, how do you combine many video files into one?

Hello everyone! When i convert dvds to Ipod format (on windows using videora) the converter seperetly re-encodes severeal (about 4) .99 Gig files into smaller ipod videos. each file is about 30 minutes long, and i was wondering if all of them could be converted into one 2 hour movie file(star wars III if you're wondering). If there is a free way to do this (not quicktimePro)I would find that extreemly helpful.

As TSN has indicated we have no idea what program you are using, other than you posted in the Acrobat forum. In Acrobat you go to File > Create > Combine (varies with version of Acrobat). You can also open one and then use the pages>Insert to add the others.

  • IMovie '08 Capacity Full and Cannot Transfter DVD's into Macbook

I recently purchased a 13" Macbook Unibody off eBay. The unit is in good shape and the previous owner has installed a Zagg Invisible Shield over the entire Macbook and the battery holds a full charge. I bought the Macbook to use editing some old VHS footage I had converted to DVD.
When I try to import a DVD to my desktop so I can edit it using iMovie '08, I get the error "Unable to create 'DVD Video Recording.dmg' (Input/Output Error). At the bottom of the screen it says DVD Video Recording Capacity 2.1 GB
    Avaiable 0 Bytes
    Used 2.1 GB
    Number of Files 4,293,886,887
The Space Utilized indicates: 20.09 GB and Space Free: 277.69 GB. When I received the Macbook I inserted the Applications Install DVD and entered my personal info. I thought this was the clean install you are referring to?
When I purchased the item, the previous owner stated the only blemish was a dead pixel at the bottom of the screen and he showed a picture of it in his add. After re-installing the applications DVD, this one dead pixel is no longer there. I don't know if this is a clue, but I am including all the info I can.
I checked out System Memory in the Activity Monitor and it indicates
    Free:2.97GB ; VM Size: 31.57 GB
Wired: 414.92 MB Page Ins: 167.48 MB
Active: 322.36 MB Page Outs: 0 Bytes
Inactive: 45.57 MB Swap Used: 0 Bytes
    Used: 782.80 MB
When I click on Disk Activity in indicates:
Reads In: 34065 Data Read: 1.4 GB
Writes Out: 11885 Data Written 703.89 MB
Read In/Read Out and Data Read/Data Written all say 0 Bytes
When I double clicked on Activity Monitor it indicates:
Real Memory Size: 18.43 MB (this fluctuates between 18.39 and 18.50 MB)
Virtual Memory Size: 420.77 MB/421.00 MB
    Shared Memory Size: 0 Bytes
Private Memory Size: 8.54 MB/8.71 MB
    Virtual Private Memory: 42.45MB/42.67MB
Why do these numbers fluctuate every second or two?
Why won't my Macbook Transfer DVD's into the hardrive so I can edit them with iMovie? Thank you for your help.

have you tried my workaround for importing from DVD?

  • Using the Canopus to convert dvd and Hi8 to dv

Looking at purchasing the Canopus 100 or 110 to convert my hi8 tapes and some dvds that were taken with a sony mini-dvd unit (dont' know which one).
    Questions:
I don't need to convert everything just snips here and there. Can I do that while importing into imovie 6?
What about the dvds I was given -HS football games. Again, all I want are short segments. Will canopus allow me to pick and choose or is this controlled by imovie?
    Thanks.

I use the Canopus ADVC110 - it works great!
Yes, you can start/stop the import anywhere you want by clicking on the 'import' button at the bottom of the window.
Importing from a DVD is different ball game for which Canopus won't help - the material is already digital but in the standard mpeg2 DVD format, not intended for editing.
Double-click the icon of the DVD to open the folder.
You need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, as well as the the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • Comparison for iPod Users: Free Online Converter & DVD to iPod Converter

Compare two channels of obtaining video sources for iPod: one is using online converter, the other is DVD to iPod Converter. After the general introduction of the two methods, I will analyze their advantages and disadvantages for you to choose according to your need.
Part One: Enjoy YouTube (online videos) on iPod
Instruction: a useful website to convert online video freely: http://www.vixy.net/
For vixy, you can just copy the URL of the online video into the “URL” blank of the vixy, then choose the format you want to convert to. Click “Start”. For a short time, the conversion will be finished. You can click the “Download the converted video” to restore the file.
    http://www.aiseesoft.com/images/guide/vixy.jpg
Advantages: Free online video converter. No software to install. Only a few clicks you can get the converted file after a short while. The most important thing is that online video sources are numerous and original, so you can get the first-hand sources in time through it. Some personal DVs are also shared with you.
Disadvantages: They set limitation of the length and size of the video. The classical movies usually are not on line available. Even if existed, the quality of image and sound is inferiors.
Part Two: Enjoy DVD movies on iPod Touch, iPod Nano, iPod Classic, iPhone, iPhone (3G), Apple TV
We usually bought classical DVD movies for collection or regular watching later, but DVD cannot be copied directly into iPod for us to appreciate it at anytime and anywhere. On this occasion, we need to convert DVD to the format, video and audio settings (Resolution, Bitrate, Frame Rate, etc) supported by your iPod player.
Instruction: the way to convert DVD to iPod: using Aiseesoft DVD to iPod Converter http://www.aiseesoft.com/dvd-to-ipod-converter.html
Install and run Aiseesoft DVD to iPod Converter
    http://www.aiseesoft.com/download/dvd-to-ipod-converter.exe
    http://www.aiseesoft.com/images/guide/screen.gif
Step 1: Click “Load DVD” button to import your DVD
Step 2: Use “Profile” drop-down list to choose your output format.
Step 3: Click “Settings” for setting your video parameters.
At last click “Start” button to start your conversion.
    More tips:
    1. Merge into One File
If you want to merge the selected contents into one file you can check the "Merge into one file" option. As default the merged file is named after the first selected file (either a title or a chapter)
    2. Movie Effect
You can set the brightness, contrast, saturation of the video and volume of the audio.
    3. Trim Movie
It can help you to capture the segment of your movie.
    http://www.aiseesoft.com/images/guide/dvd-to-ipod-thread-trim.jpg
    4. Crop Video
You can remove black edge of your DVD movie and get any playing area of the video by using its "Crop Mode" function. You can also select "Zoom Mode" to extrude your video slightly to adjust to your portable devices so you can get the best video quality.
    http://www.aiseesoft.com/images/guide/dvd-to-ipod-thread-crop.jpg
    5. Take Snapshot
It allows you to capture your favorite pictures from your movie.
Advantages: In this way, you can make full use of your DVD: not only in DVD player, but your iPod player. The function of effecting and trimming allows you to clip the segment of the DVD movies complying with your will. You can enjoy more movies taking full advantage of your spare time while relaxing or traveling.
Disadvantages: DVD movies are usually popular, lacking of individualization. You can not share others' DVs.
With these two ways, we can enjoy the pleasure videos bring to us as much as we like. Have fun!

Depending on what update your iPod is, you may need
to dowload YAMB to make sure the videos play well on
your iPod. If you are watching a converted video on
your iPod and it freezes suddenly and this problem
continues, you need to download YAMB and convert the
files already converted with videora iPod converter
with YAMB, this will only take a few minutes.
I hope this helps you out.
Nope. All that a person with that problem should have to do is just update their iPod firmware to 1.1.1 with the newest updater, as that issue has been resolved in the latest firmware.

  • Which is the best software to convert dvd to IPad 2d

Which is the best software to convert dvd to IPad 2d

unfortunately discussing the breaking of the encryption that comes with commercial dvd's is prohibited in these forums. however a quick google search will get you to quite a few software providers....
on a personal note, i don't agree with the fact that we can't "legally" transfer dvd's because breaking the encryption is considered illegal, even though the "fair use act" has said that copying dvd's for personal use or for backup purposed is considered legal. it's just the software to do that isn't. i'm not one who would rip a dvd then make multiple copies to make a financial gain. i just want to be able to convert my "old" media into a format that meets my current needs.
good luck my friend on your search. i really wish i could help you more
