Converting DVDs to 720p for iPad

I am converting my DVD collection to digital and am having issues getting anything above 480p to play on my Apple TV 1.  I am using Copy123 and it has an option to convert to 720p for AppleTV 1g, but it won't play.  The same 720p file works great on the iPad.  Does anyone have suggestions?

dvd's are nowhere near as high res as 720p
if you convert them to a higher res the quality does not improve it's basicly the same
as zooming on an digital image
every 1 pixel will just be 4 depending on how much one upscale
upscaling will never add new infomation to the image stream
so unless you have some crazy tv which can only play it's native res so would make a lower res then 720p only fill a fragtion of the screen keep media in it's original resolution will even save you space doing so and time

  • Best video format for converting DVD to NAS for widely sharing

Summary: The article shows you with an easy workaround for
copying DVD to NAS for streaming by ripping DVD to NAS friendly video
    format on Mac and Windows
I recently purchased a NAS to store all my music/photos etc on. I
can stream stuff to my iPhone/iPad using the NAS software. What I want
to do is rip all my DVDs (over 400) to my NAS, but I’m not sure which
format to do it in, to play nice with my Apple TV2, Xbox 360, iPhone,
iPad etc. I wanna get some advice as to what format to rip in and what
    software to use?
Learn some tips from online, I got know that to copy dozens of DVD movies to NAS,
you need to get the content off the DVD disc as a protection-free and
easily readable element for NAS. In this case, at the first place
powerful third-party software for backup DVD to NAS is what you need.
There are many, many DVD ripping tools on the market. I’ve tired a pile of them.
    Brorsoft DVD Ripper
is the best one I’ve tried yet. It is capable of ripping DVD to MP4,
AVI, MKV for NAS streaming with no quality loss; it also enables you to
copy DVD main movies for backup onto NAS in .vob format. And what I’ve
learned is that MP4 would be one best target format for it is fully
compatible with nearly all media devices including iPad, iPhone, PS3,
Apple TV, etc. If you are running on Mac OS X, turn to  DVD Ripper for Mac. If you haven’t got the software, download it now and let’s start the conversion.
Ripping and copying DVDs to NAS
    1. Launch the DVD ripping program for NAS devices . Then
click "Load DVD" to import the DVD files you want to convert. To select
the subtitles you like, simply click Subtitle and select the one you
prefer. P.S. Before start the conversion, you can choose to backup DVD mian movies.
    2. Click Format bar and choose your desired format. To store
hundreds of DVD's on NAS, you can rip DVD to .mp4, or .avi, .mkv, etc
compressed format. And click Settings bar, you can adjust the level of
compression to suit the quality you want.
Tip: If you like, you can click “Settings” to change the
video encoder, resolution, frame rate, etc. as you wish. Keep in mind
the file size and video quality is based more on bitrate than resolution
which means bitrate higher results in big file size, and lower visible
    quality loss, and vice versa.
    3. Press the "Convert" button to start ripping DVD for NAS streaming.
After the conversion, click Open button to find the output files.
Make sure the wireless network connection is accessible among the NAS
and Apple TV, PS3, HD TV or other media players. Then just enjoy the
high quality DVD movies anywhere anytime.

I've always found encoding with Handbrake and choosing the Apple TV2 preset is an excellent place to start and video encoded using that preset will work on my iPhone 4, 4S and iPad 2.
If the files encoded using that preset are too big for one's taste they can always encoded at a lower average bit rate rather than using the default 'Constant Quality' of 20.
Later on I'm sure the Handbrake group will have an AppleTV '3' preset supporting the 1080p format supported by the ATV3 and iPad '3' but using such a preset would not create a file usable on the iPad 2 or the iPhones.

  • Convert DVD to iPod For Windows

I have some DVDs that I'd like to play on my iPod, but I haven't been able to convert them. I tried them on my Mac at work using Handbrake, and that didn't work. I really need a Windows free shareware program that will do it, so i can load the DVDs on my home PC where my iTunes library is. Do you know where I can download the free shareware and how to actualy convert the files?
    Thanks so much!

I am so upset about this subject for the first time in my 35 years I actually called the Attorney General's office to complain. I suggest more people do this as well, they told me this is a "very deceptive act" and were going to investigate fully.
What annoys me to no end, is how I never saw anything saying I had to buy videos from itunes. Why should I be buying what I already own? And, if we are having this issue, you know there has to be at least 500,000 other people with the same complaint. Shouldn't have to use illegal software to do something that is legal... I own it, I can do what I want with it, I am not selling it, i am not charging a viewing to see/use nor am I sharing any file with anyone... It is freakin mine!

  • Dvds to itunes for ipad

How do I import dvds from my desktop to itunes so I can sync with my ipad.  I cannot get them to drag and drop into itunes...  Thanks Andrea

Sorry, but if you're referring to commercial and hence copy-protected DVDs, breaking the copy protection, which would be necessary to copy the videos from the DVD and convert them, is illegal in the US (and other countries), so we're not allowed to discuss it here.
If these are home movies that you or someone has burned to DVD and hence are not copy-protected, Handbrake (freeware) is one of the more popular converters. Once converted, you just drag the movie into the iTunes window on your computer and you can then sync it to your iPad.
    Regards.

  • Itunes Home Sharing HD (720p) for Ipad and Iphone... Buffering Freezing...is a mess

I'd like to report a comment that I found on mac-forums.com that summerize the situation(http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/ios-apps/231842-ios-4-3-issues-home-sharing.htm l#post1273744):
"While home sharing works, it doesn't seem like a finished product to me. Since the appletv 2 is built on iOS, I don't understand why home sharing on the iPad does not work the EXACT same way as it does on the apple tv 2. These are the problems I have with home sharing on the iPad for video:
    1) My shows should be displayed in order, which they are not. What I see is a random jumble of different shows, different seasons of the same show are not even placed together consistantly.
    2) Once I select a season of a show, the episodes are not in order.
    3) I can't see which episodes are watched or unwatched, nor can I resume an episode that I started on my computer (or start an episode on my iPad and finish it on my computer).
    4) The streaming seems slow for HD content and stops every now and again to buffer.
The appletv 2 has none of these issues. Being as they run the same OS, I can only conclude that apple has a lot more work to do with home sharing on the iPad and iPhone, or they are deliberately hamstringing home sharing because now that they are releasing an HDMI adapter, a well implemented home sharing system would eat into the sales of the appletv 2."
I think that Apple must find a solution about this....also with ipad IOS 4.3.5 home sharing doesn't work properly with hd content....and I assure you is not a network problem

Have your tried removing and reinstalling iTunes?
Cannot start ITunes on  Laptop (linked to IPAD) at all but can from Browser.
What does "can from browser" mean?
Trying to share content from my IPAD and APple TV.
You don't share content from AppleTV (as it contains no content) and you can AirpPlay from iPad to AppleTV, not share content.
To turn on Home Sharing on the iPad, Settings > Store.

  • Which is the best software to convert dvd to IPad 2d

Which is the best software to convert dvd to IPad 2d

unfortunately discussing the breaking of the encryption that comes with commercial dvd's is prohibited in these forums. however a quick google search will get you to quite a few software providers....
on a personal note, i don't agree with the fact that we can't "legally" transfer dvd's because breaking the encryption is considered illegal, even though the "fair use act" has said that copying dvd's for personal use or for backup purposed is considered legal. it's just the software to do that isn't. i'm not one who would rip a dvd then make multiple copies to make a financial gain. i just want to be able to convert my "old" media into a format that meets my current needs.
good luck my friend on your search. i really wish i could help you more

  • What formats for iPad for dvd?

I want to convert some dvds to my ipad for the kids.  what format should movies be in on my ipad? AVI? MPEG? OR SVCD?  Which will give good quality but not use up alot of space?

The manual lists the video formats the iPad likes
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/ipad_user_guide.pdf
Presuming these are home movies or other non-copyright protected videos, Handbrake works quite well to convert formats. If it's commercial dvd's then you'll need to research elsewhere. No one here is permitted to assist you in breaking the CSS encryption on a commercial DVD.
If you're wanting to get commercial dvd's onto your iPad, an easier way may be to get teh movies from iTunes, then you'll own them and won't have to mess with conversion.

  • Convert dvd video files to play on my ipad

I have an ipad 2 and I have a lot of dvd-files (vob, avi, mov,...) and I search for the right sofware to convert them to play on my material.
Is there a software in the itune store to do the job ?

There is a pc version of handbrake but I'm not sure if it works the same way it does on Mac
Another thing you can look into, Walmart has been advertising making digital copies of DVDs you own for $2 each (excluding Disney). Could see if that can help you. I have zero idea about the details.

  • Comparison for iPod Users: Free Online Converter & DVD to iPod Converter

Compare two channels of obtaining video sources for iPod: one is using online converter, the other is DVD to iPod Converter. After the general introduction of the two methods, I will analyze their advantages and disadvantages for you to choose according to your need.
Part One: Enjoy YouTube (online videos) on iPod
Instruction: a useful website to convert online video freely: http://www.vixy.net/
For vixy, you can just copy the URL of the online video into the “URL” blank of the vixy, then choose the format you want to convert to. Click “Start”. For a short time, the conversion will be finished. You can click the “Download the converted video” to restore the file.
    http://www.aiseesoft.com/images/guide/vixy.jpg
Advantages: Free online video converter. No software to install. Only a few clicks you can get the converted file after a short while. The most important thing is that online video sources are numerous and original, so you can get the first-hand sources in time through it. Some personal DVs are also shared with you.
Disadvantages: They set limitation of the length and size of the video. The classical movies usually are not on line available. Even if existed, the quality of image and sound is inferiors.
Part Two: Enjoy DVD movies on iPod Touch, iPod Nano, iPod Classic, iPhone, iPhone (3G), Apple TV
We usually bought classical DVD movies for collection or regular watching later, but DVD cannot be copied directly into iPod for us to appreciate it at anytime and anywhere. On this occasion, we need to convert DVD to the format, video and audio settings (Resolution, Bitrate, Frame Rate, etc) supported by your iPod player.
Instruction: the way to convert DVD to iPod: using Aiseesoft DVD to iPod Converter http://www.aiseesoft.com/dvd-to-ipod-converter.html
Install and run Aiseesoft DVD to iPod Converter
    http://www.aiseesoft.com/download/dvd-to-ipod-converter.exe
    http://www.aiseesoft.com/images/guide/screen.gif
Step 1: Click “Load DVD” button to import your DVD
Step 2: Use “Profile” drop-down list to choose your output format.
Step 3: Click “Settings” for setting your video parameters.
At last click “Start” button to start your conversion.
    More tips:
    1. Merge into One File
If you want to merge the selected contents into one file you can check the "Merge into one file" option. As default the merged file is named after the first selected file (either a title or a chapter)
    2. Movie Effect
You can set the brightness, contrast, saturation of the video and volume of the audio.
    3. Trim Movie
It can help you to capture the segment of your movie.
    http://www.aiseesoft.com/images/guide/dvd-to-ipod-thread-trim.jpg
    4. Crop Video
You can remove black edge of your DVD movie and get any playing area of the video by using its "Crop Mode" function. You can also select "Zoom Mode" to extrude your video slightly to adjust to your portable devices so you can get the best video quality.
    http://www.aiseesoft.com/images/guide/dvd-to-ipod-thread-crop.jpg
    5. Take Snapshot
It allows you to capture your favorite pictures from your movie.
Advantages: In this way, you can make full use of your DVD: not only in DVD player, but your iPod player. The function of effecting and trimming allows you to clip the segment of the DVD movies complying with your will. You can enjoy more movies taking full advantage of your spare time while relaxing or traveling.
Disadvantages: DVD movies are usually popular, lacking of individualization. You can not share others' DVs.
With these two ways, we can enjoy the pleasure videos bring to us as much as we like. Have fun!

Depending on what update your iPod is, you may need
to dowload YAMB to make sure the videos play well on
your iPod. If you are watching a converted video on
your iPod and it freezes suddenly and this problem
continues, you need to download YAMB and convert the
files already converted with videora iPod converter
with YAMB, this will only take a few minutes.
I hope this helps you out.
Nope. All that a person with that problem should have to do is just update their iPod firmware to 1.1.1 with the newest updater, as that issue has been resolved in the latest firmware.

  • Converting DVD Footage for Editing

It is always best to start the editing process with the highest quality, least compressed video format you can obtain.  However, sometimes the only source you have for footage is from a DVD*.  But since DVD footage is highly compressed and specially formatted as VOB files in order to meet the DVD-Video specification, the files on the DVD must be converted if you plan to edit them in Final Cut.
There are many apps available for converting DVD footage, but it is extremely important that you use the right tool for doing this if you plan to edit the footage.  Beware that some apps, like Handbrake, are not designed to convert to an editing format.  Using the wrong app can mean wasted time, unneeded quality loss due to multiple conversions, needless rendering in FCP and just plain frustrating.
The two recommended apps for conversion to an editing format are DVDxDV and MPEG Streamclip.
    DVDxDV – http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    MPEG Streamclip – http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
Nick Holmes has prepared an excellent, step-by-step tutorial on how to do this using the freeware application MPEG Streamclip which can be found here: http://www.secondchairvideo.com/?p=739 (thanks, Nick!). Be sure to read both parts.
    -DH
    * always make sure you have proper rights and licensing from the copyright owner when using any footage other than your own.  DVDxDV and MPEG Streamclip should not be used to convert footage from commercially released DVDs.

    Welcome to the Forum.
Search is your friend. Surely you jest about "can't find it anywhere". Just scan the posts for the last week or so. Also, read the FCP manual about what format can be edited within FCP.

  • App for converting standard DVDs to MP4 for Iphone

I have used Handbrake to convert standard DVDs to MP$ for my Iphone, but have run into a problem with the 64-bit version.  I cannot go back to 32-bit version.  Is this the best app for this conversion?  If so, should I reinstall?

Are these "home made" DVDs, that is, DVDs without copy protection? Or are they commercial video DVDs?  If you're referring to commercial and hence copy-protected video DVDs, breaking the copy protection, which would be necessary to copy the videos from the DVD and convert them, is illegal in the US (and other countries), so we're not allowed to discuss it here.
You may want to post in the Handbreak forums in either case.

  • What video converter app for mac would you suggest to convert videos for ipad mini?

Just recently got myself ipad mini and want to fill it up with movies. i have some but they have wrong format. And i don't know which format is the best for ipad mini(

iPad Mini supports .m4v, .mov, .mp4, and some of .avi files with Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) codec.
Generally, you can choose to convert files to MP4 format using utilities like Handbrake, Format Factory, etc. They are all free.
I have get a PS3 and iPad 2 years ago, sometimes I need to convert files to AVI for my PS3, so I choose a professional converter called AppGeeker. (while handbrake only output mkv and mp4 format, and FF reduces amount of quality of video)
    it works marvelosly for me.

  • Converting DVD for editing in FCP

    Hello All.
I am converting DVDs in MPEG Streamclip but need help reducing the size of the exporting file.
I regularly receive DVDs of performances to edit. This specific one in question, as many are, has a video size of 720x480, the aspect ration is 4:3, format NTSC. It is Standard Definition. I use MPEG Streamclip to convert the DVD, which is 999 MB. I will export via QuickTime, to some variation of Apple Pro Res, or DVC PRO...at varying percent of quality, but the file always comes out much larger than the original. Depending on clip size, it will come out at 2-20GB in size.
Does anyone have any suggestions or informantion on how to reduce the file size of the DVDs I am converting?
Thanks much for your time and assistance,
    Paolo

Most importantly, for storage space reasons,
Storage space is really cheap. If you can't get more storage then do what was previously suggested by David. Capture everything as DV/NTSC. That will give you the smallest file size for your capture
as well as because I will be uploading them to YouTube, where there are limits to the size of file you can upload.
You're not uploading your captured footage file to youtube. You need to convert to a format that youtube will accept. This file has limitations not the captured file.
