Converting Elements 3 catalog to Elements 10

I am installing Elements 10 on a new computer and have a backup of my elements 3 catalog on an external hard drive. How do I go about converting the elements 3 catalog to elements 10 from the elements 3 backup file?
Thanks very much...Bev Crone.

  • Converting Album Catalogs to Elements 11 Catalogs

I am having difficulty converting my old Photoshop Album Catalogs (file extension .psa) to Elements 11.
Using "Manage Catalogs" from the file tab and then "Convert".  I get the convert catalog screen.  Using "find catalogs"  I can browse to the folder where the .psa Catalogs are but the window does not list them as choices for converting.
I have seen this question many times in the forum but none of the proposed solutions have worked for me.
This is especially annoying as one time (and only one time) it did list them and I was able to succesfully convert some of them but I can't recreate this for the remaining catalogs.
I don't remember doing anyting different the one time it worked.

Thanks for trying to help, unfortunately it does not work.
I have 4 catalogs.  Ticking the checkbox "show previously converted catalogs" lists the 3 that were succesfully converted, but not the 4th that has yet to be converted.
I tried tricking it by moving one converted catalog to another folder and renaming the unconverted catalog to the same name.
As expected this did not work, but it was worth a try.
The unconverted catalog is larger than than the others because it is my main one, but not that much larger than one of those successfully converted. (27kb vs 19kb).  I don't think the size matters as it doesn't even list the catalog in the select window.
Any other ideas would be appreciated as Adobe chat was unwilling to help, claiming that "Album" was too old to support.
My opinion is that I needed support to get the brand new "Elements 11" to work properly not "Album", but they disagreed.
As I mentioned before, the real frustration stems from the fact that based on personal experience, I KNOW "Elements 11" can do this, I just don't know how.
The trusty old computer with "Album" died and the new one won't run it. I need some way of saving all the info previously entered.
    Thanks for any help,

I

finally getting back to this project---adobe starter edition 3.2 is on a windows XP computer
ADOBE PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 12 is on our Windows 8.1 computer.
error messages--- had to give up trying to convert---I copied all our pictures to our windows 7 laptop and I installed adobe photoshop elements 12 (my bought program)
I wanted to try to convert there first. also I copied our catalog to this computer also. Everything was working fine I could see the collections just as they where on the XP computer.
then I tried to convert on the laptop. I believe the error said something about corrupt file, so I gave up that day. Next day I tried to open ADOBE STARTER EDITION 3.2  and it wanted an unlock code, no such code exists. and my copy of Elements 12 turned into a trial version which has expired. So I am a little hesitant to try to convert on the XP  computer and mess up the existing catalog,
unless there is a fool proof way. I have tried manually making collections/ albums on Windows 8.1 and PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 12  and coping pictures into the new albums. sloooow!!
I probably have about 4500 pictures and 150 collections/ albums to go. So any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Trouble converting a catalog from Adobe Photoshop Album into Elements 9

I have looked all over and found instructions for converting a catalog from Adobe Photoshop Album into Photoshop Elements 9, but it does not see my catalog?  I have tried selecting it by clicking "Find More Catalogs" and I select the folder containing the catalog but it does not show up and the option to "Show Previously Converted Catalogs" is disabled?  I am quite frustrated, as the entire reason for purchasing Adobe Photoshop Elements was to be able to import my old Photoshop Album catalog.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the suggestion, I have tried converting the catalog from the psa file as well as restoring from the psb (backup) file and neither one is working on my new computer.  It partially converts the catalog from Photoshop Album (PSA) 2 but then all the file links are broken in Photoshop Elements (PSE) 9.  I have about 10,000 photos in this catalog, so it is a lot of files.  I still have my old computer so I tried installing PSE 9 on it and then it converted the PSA catalog fine, so I backup up the PSE 9 catalog on my old computer and tried doing a restore from this backup on my new computer and same thing, only some of the files come through.

  • I can't locate my catalog in Elements 8.0 to convert to 10.0

I've watched the tutorial to convert my catalog but I don't have anything that remotely resembles the Organizer on my screen.  When I go to File, there is no catalog.  I upgraded to Elements 10.0 and also use Lightroom but chose to maintain Elements to do things that Lightroom can't like layers.  I don't want all the organization that I've done on my old photos to disappear and don't want to import my Lightroom catalog into Elements.  What am I doing wrong?  Where would the Elements catalog file reside on my drive and what would the file extension be?  I did a search on Catalog and came up empty.  I'm using Mac with Lion OS.

Thanks for trying.  I was on a Chat with someone from the Adobe team and I got no help whatsoever.  Basically his response was that I needed to reimport all my phoios.  That means I lose all my keywording and editng.  What's the point?  Ok, I'm just ranting.  Really, thanks for all efforts!
Did you see my remark about Mac PSE8 having Bridge and not Organizer ? Since nobody corrected me, I am confident that you can't find a catalog, which is only an Organizer feature. As far as I know, Bridge does not store your keywords, only thumbnails. So your keywords must have been saved within your media files themselves. That means that if you re-import those files in an Organizer catalog, you'll get them back. The advice to reimport is a sound one.
Just note that with the Organizer, it is a good idea to use the 'Write metadata to files' feature in the file menu, that is an additional way to backup your tagging work and it makes your tagging available to non Adobe softwares.

  • Photoshop elements 12 - convert a catalog

    My PC has three drives
C for the programs, D for the photos and F for the backup photos
With the upgrade to Elements 12, C is nearly maxed out
Except for "C" there are multiple catalogs on each drive, C should have none
I do not see an ability to convert the most recent catalog on each drive?
When a catalog is converted - does it reside on the same drive as the catalog?
If a catalog ends up on the wrong drive, for example C - can I just move/drag it to another drive?
Your catalogs end up under something called "breeze data" and are very diffcult to find, why are they called this?
This conversion appears to have placed the converted photographs in 'C", is that possible, since they were not there at the start?
When I tried a conversion earlier this evening, it only did the most recent photographs I had accessed, how do I ensure it gets them all?
Since it did a partial conversion, will the rest of the conversion land in the same catalogue or in a completely new one?
When a file is converted, and I return to the drive, how will the icon be changed so that I know it has been converted?
For the previous elements 10, can I just drag it from Drive C to D (that way I can still use it with the pictures I have not converted), and have it still operate or must it reside in a program files folder?
As I type this I wonder if I might not be better off with just leaving the photographs as they are on 10 and starting afresh on elements 12
    Sorry for all the questions
    Thanks

    1) For those backup catalogues that I have on D and F i can still back those up by going to the drive (through photoshop elements and your instructions above) and doing a conversion.  The result will still stay in the same drive.  If I have multiple catalogues on a drive, I should convert each one of them or just the most recent?
You can convert any catalog that you may need, it's up to you to decide if it's worth converting for ulterior use.
    2) For that backup of the catalog that was done in C, and then completely filled that drive, there is nothing I can do except increase the memory on drive C
If your C: drive can't hold all your picture files, you can use external drives to increase your storing space. Catalogs keep track of your images on different drives. You can move all or a part of your picture files to other external or internal drives. External USB drives are a good and affordable solution. The catalog itself (the catalog folder) may stay in the default location in your C: drive, or you can move it elsewhere. The organizer will be more responsive if the catalog in your main internal drive, but moving the catalog to an external drive containing all your picture files is a good way to be able to share your pictures with another computer having Elements.
    3) After all the conversions are done, I can de-install photoshop elements 10 from C because it will no longer be useable with the old photographs
Yes, that will free up some space.
    4) I should not touch/move the converted files in C
    Is this correct?
You can move or copy the catalog folder from C if there is a good reason for that, such as sharing the catalog with another computer. Since the catalog manager in Elements does not allow to do the move from default location to a custom one (while it enables the opposite move), you simply use the explorer / Finder to move or copy the catalog file to custom location. Simply double click on the catalog.pseXXdb file to open the organizer and the moved catalog.
Of course, moving picture files from C is another matter. Either you use the organizer to move those, or you use the explorer / finder, which will disconnect the link to the files and require that you do a 'reconnect' from the organizer (not always easy).

Yes - I can run both versions on my PC.  But I really would like to have all of my pictures in the same catalog.
You can't merge catalogs (even PSE13 ones) in any PSE version (only LR can do that). So, converting catalogs is not the solution to your problem.
Since you have PSE5 working on your computer and your images also, the solution is to 'write metadata to files in PSE5) and to re-import the images in the PSE13 catalog. That won't duplicate your image files and you'll lose albums/collections, stacks and version sets, but you'll recover tags, captions and ratings.
To be able to re-import the files indexed in PSE5, you may have to move them to a new master folder.
I am not sure what your problem with the conversion may be. It's quite possible that the resulting catalog.pse13db is ok and that the issue lies in the ability to open it in the PSE13 organizer.
As stated by dj_page, double clicking on that file should open the organizer with the new catalog. You could test that by creating a dummy catalog in PSE13 and importing a small batch of photos. Locate the path of the catalog with the menu Help/system info. Copy the catalog.pse13db in another folder and the 'double click' way to open the organizer with that moved catalog database.

  • How do I get my catalogs from elements 8 to elements 11? [was:transfering catalogs]

How do I get my catalogs from elements 8 to elements 11?

    It depends...
If you are still on the same computer and OS, the Organizer in PSE11 (or PSE12) will be able to convert the old catalog to its own format, while keeping the old catalog unchanged.
If you are changing computer, drive or OS, the best method is via a full backup and restore:

  • Photoshop Elements Catalog Conversion Stalls @ 37%

I recently upgraded to Photoshop Elements 11 from 10, but each time I try to convert the catalog, it stalls at 37%.  I don't get an error message, it just stops here (and I've tried letting it run for HOURS). Here's what the screen shows:
I have tried making sure iTunes is not running and that there are no other processes for older versions of PSE running.  I've restarted my computer, tried running the program as an administrator, and just tried re-doing the conversion.  It always stalls at the same spot, though.
I tried opening up PSE 10 so I could repair the catalog and make sure certain functions were turned off (like facial recognition), but PSE begins updating and then stalls at 100%.  I can't use the PSE 10 organizer at all because of this.  I'm thinking this is happening because some of the catalog has already been converted?  I don't know.  All I know is that I'm beyond frustrated.  I had issues when I updated to PSE 10, and I was hoping this upgrade might go more smoothly.
I did back up my PSE 10 catalog before I started all of this.  I like the new look/feel of PSE 11, and I'm excited to begin using it.  But, I have almost 55,000 photos, and I'm not going to start all over on my organizing/tagging/sorting. So, any help would be appreciated.  Oh, and BTW...I have a working knowledge of computers and the program, but I'm no computer expert. Thanks so much for your advice.

I see you have already tried the usual methods.
One thing that puzzles me is the screenshot with the file 'thumbs.5.cache'.
That file is the cache storing the thumbnails : it's an sqlite database just like the main catalog : catalog.pse11db.
Normally, when you 'optimize' the catalog, that cache file is rebuilt, but sometimes the only way to replace it is to delete it, and wait for the Organizer to rebuild it (several hours in your case...)
It would not hurt to do so in PSE10 before trying the conversion.
The conversion in PSE11 also converts (or make a copy ?) of the cache file.
In my tests, the conversions in PSE11 do work even if the cache file is missing, and even if there are missing files. So, trying to convert without the cache file and let the Organizer rebuild the thumbnails in PSE11 is possible.
    Edit:
I see 99jon was on the same track.

  • PS Elements catalog problems from Album Starter Edition

I have PS Elements 11 installed on my new notebook. I have copied all my photos from my old PC into the Photos folder on the notbook (running Windows7).  I then imported them into PS Elements. I had them all catalogued on the PC under PS Album  Starter Edition. I have copied the  the catalog  .psa file as suggested in the instructions &  used the convert command under Elements' Manage Calalogs. Everything seemd to go as expected; all my 'Collections' came in as 'Albums' & all my Tags are there.. But  none of the images are being read. All the thumbnails are the generic flower image. It seems tthe catalog is still pointing to the old D: drive on my PC& it wants me to "connect the external drive".  What have I done wrong? Have can I fix this?  I have nearly 9000 photos & hundreds of tags etc.  I will break my heart to lose the cataloging.

Thanks so much, Andaleeb, for your interest in my problem.
The last idea I had was similar to your suggestion - to connect my new
notebook (on which I have PSE11) to the old PC (which has Starter Edition
on it), using Peer to Peer by wireless, so the notebook could see the files
    on the PC.
Then Import the images into PSE11 from the "external drive" - this I
    managed to do fairly easily.
Then I thought I should be able to access the Catalog file on the PC, in a
similar way from the notebook via the wireless connection.
My thinking was that it then should not be confused about where the images
were actually located; and I would then be able to send a backup
instruction from PSE11 to the files on the PC; and THEN - restore from that
backup, and using the fact that when restoring, PSE11 asks if you want to
relocate the files and catalog to a new location - and I could choose to
    relocate them on the notebook.
However, although I managed to import the images into PSE11 easily, I could
not get it to recognize the catalog (.psa) file on the PC via the wireless
connection. I checked & rechecked that I had the relevant folder set
correctly to 'share', but no luck.
I don't know why this was, because it you copy the catalog file to a usb
stick & plug it into the notebook, it can pick it up OK.
So I tried that anyway, and converted the catalog again from the usb stick,
hoping that since the import of the images was via the wireless connect,
    PSE11 now 'knew' the images were located on the 'external' PC hard drive;
but still the converted catalog would not function. Same as before - all my
Albums & Tags were listed correctly, but all the image thumbnails changed
from correct images to 'lost' generic Adobe flowers.
At that point, I lost heart & decided I would have to abandon the project &
just start the massive task of re-cataloging. I have a total of 64Gig of
photos, of which about 12Gig were cataloged. Very sad!
Now your suggestion has inspired me to give it one more try. It might make
a difference to have PSE11 on the PC working locally rather than trying to
negotiate the external drive thing. I had forgotten that I can do this with
    a trial version.
I will let you know how I go.

  • Import adobe photoshop elements catalog

I have migrated from PC Windows to iMac. I am wanting to convert my catalog file containing all tags of all images & photos that I used to store on PC. I have used Adobe Photoshop Elements thusfar to build catalogs, but Adobe does not support this freeware any longer. Is there a way to convert the Adobe catalog file (*.psa) into iPhoto or other Mac supported picture manager?

Bummer that it did not work as advertised. I think there are other threads on the same subject. Try search with words like Elements, keywords, tags, transfer, etc and see if you get anything useful. If you don't like searching just scan the lists back 6 months or so. Don't remember this being an issue in last 2 months. There is also the knowledgebase search, which I did not try.
One other thought before you do the above. Go to Edit>Preferences>Thumbnails (Bridge) and make sure there is a checkmark for "Keywords" in Details - additional lines of Metadata to add.

  • Option to Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog not available (LR5, PSE 12, Win 8)

Hi there. I have trial versions of both Photoshop Elements 12 and Lightroom 5.2 (trial licenses are both still active (i.e. not expired)). I'm looking to import my PSE12 catalog into Lightroom before I plunk down the money to buy it.
I cannot, however, locate the "File->Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog" option in LR5.
I may have originally installed LR 5 before installing PSE 12. So I uninstalled LR5 and reinstalled it. Still no luck - the option isn't there.
Any other ways to force LR5 to look for the PSE 12 catalog? Will LR5 even recognize a PSE12 catalog?
Your help is greatly appreciated - thanks!

...But we can also wait and see report from other users.
Unfortunately, there is no doubt that the conversion of PSE12 catalogs has been omitted. It's not the first time : I also had to wait for LR4 to be able to convert PSE11 files. We may hope that Adobe will acknowledge the fact, and possibly solve the problem for future versions of PSE.
Of course, it's not a priority for Adobe: the ability to convert PSE catalogs is mainly a sales argument to make the jump from the PSE Organizer to LR easier. Not so many cases, and anyway you can always write metadata to files in PSE and import later in LR. After the jump to LR, you rarely have more PSE catalogs to convert.
However, maintaining misleading update notes by Adobe is not a good point in favour of LR. I do consider that the ability for LR to convert PSE catalog was and still is a very smart demonstration of the ability to deal with database organizational systems. I also consider that once that conversion process is mastered, the update process for each new Elements version is not such a big deal.
