Converting files to Apple Lossless without keeping originals

Can someone let me know if it is possible to convert files to Apple Lossless without actually keeping the original file. I converted all my files and now my whole library is duplicated! Also need to kneo the quickest way to erase all my duplicated files.

Just a note: you don't say what format the tracks were that you converted, but unless they were AIFF or lossless WAV, there was no point in converting them to Apple Lossless. Once you have a "lossy" format such as AAC or MP3, data is thrown away and there's no way to get the lost data/quality back. So if it was MP3, AAC, WMA or compressed WAV tracks, converting them to Lossless gets you nothing but larger file sizes.
You might already know this, but just wanted to mention it.
Regards.

  • Want to replace Wav Files with Apple Lossless in the same folder...Scripts?

    Hello!
I have about 4,000 wav files (wow) that I digitized from Vinyl. I organize my media folder myself (I have the organize option unchecked in preferences) and most of the songs are not properly tagged. I would love to convert the wav files to apple lossless and have Itunes save the file in the same folder from where it originated. I havent found a way to do this yet. Its weird to me that I can select a song in a playlist and hit "Show in Finder" and it knows exactly where it is yet when I convert files to apple lossless they end up in the "unknown artist-unknown album" folder. Anyone have any ideas or is there any scripts that can do this for me ? thanks so much!!
I had found one script that deletes the original wav files but still the new apple lossless are still put in the unknown album folder.....

When iTunes converts a file, it does not allow you to direct the location of the output file, but rather places it according to the Artist/Album tags, which in your case are unknown.
Almost every other conversion tool allows you to direct the location of the output. There are not a huge choice that run on the Mac and support Apple Lossless, but a good one is Max.

  • How to Convert iTunes Songs (Apple lossless audio file) to a MP3 for E-mail

How to Convert iTunes Songs (Apple lossless audio file) to a MP3 for E-mail?
My computer is Windows 7 and my Itunes software version is 1.0.2
    Many thanks in advance...

iTunes 1.0.2 is +at least+ eight years old.
The current version is 9.2, and it's free.
If that was a typo, and you're using something more current:
In the iTunes preferences, change the import settings to mp3.
Then select the songs you wish to convert.
From the "Advanced" menu, choose "Create mp3 version".
When done, change the import settings back to Apple Lossless.
    That's it.
BTW, this is the Logic Pro forum, which has absolutely nothing to do with iTunes.

    What Are FLAC and ALAC?
FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec), as its name suggested, is a free lossless audio codec. FLAC can compress audio to about 50~60% without any quality loss. This format has been widely accepted by many Hi-Fi systems and audiophiles.
Apple Lossless, also known as Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC), or Apple Lossless Encoder (ALE), is an audio compressing format, developed by Apple Inc. for lossless data compression of digital music. After initially keeping it proprietary from its inception in 2004, in late 2011 Apple made the codec available open source and royalty-free. Traditionally, Apple has referred to the codec as Apple Lossless, though more recently they have begun to use the abbreviated term ALAC when referring to the codec.
Here is a step by step guide on how to convert FLAC to ALAC. It also introduces a way to convert FLAC to many other audio formats like MP3, WAV, AAC, AC3, M4A, etc and vice versa.

I'd like to know how I can store movies on the Apple TV without having to keep them in the iTunes library. I'd like to use the 160Gb of space on my Apple TV without having to use the same space on my nearly full MBP hard disk !

Ah! Of course... I wasn't even considering this b/c I'm one of these people who almost never has his computer off b/c I work from home and also do a lot of web surfing, etc. but obviously many many people have the computer shut off much more often than it is on.
So, alright. I see why the hard drive is there... it just seems so tempting for it to be able to be more of a stand alone device, more like another computer with iTunes on it rather than like a big iPod that sits under my TV. I guess I'll file that away in my tech wish list...

  • How to convert WAV to Apple Lossless?

I just bought an Ipod and have all my music on my computer in WAV format. Could someone please describe how do I convert to Apple Lossless? It isn't descrtibed in the manual.
    Gerry

Although the AAC format gives excellent audio reproduction with minimal compression a word of warning: if you have any other mp3 players (non ipod) it is unlikely that they will recognise and therefore be able to replay this fairly apple specific format. Further more if you wish to play these files on a pc which is not running itunes, it is likey that you will have to download an aac codec in order for them to be recognised. Although recognised as an "inferior" format mp3 (lame)is a much more portable compression and therefore will play on 99% of pc's/mac's/mp3 players. If you convert your wav files to a mp3 bit rate of >192kb/s I don't think you will notice a difference in audio quality. iTunes allows you to rip to an mp3 encode, just select it from the drop down list rather than the aac and select a bit rate of 192kb/s (or more) from the setting tab, the default is 128kb/s. Your mp3 encoded files will also take less space on your ipod.
Just thought you may like to know of further options...

  • How to convert FLAC to Apple Lossless

how to convert FLAC to Apple Lossless

Handbrake really is only for converting video and the audio attached to that video. With that said, there are many efficient ways to do this, personally, I am perfectly content just converting the file into a .wav files (it has the same 1411kbps), however you will have to re-tag everything. If you don't want to re-tag everything you can aslo just convert to .alac using Foobar2000 (Windows).
Also, if the reason that you don't want to keep it as a .flac files is because your iPod doesn't support it, if it is a Classic, then you can just install Rockbox and it supports .flac natively.

  • How do I copy music files in Apple Lossless format on to a flash drive so I can play on a digital media player.

I would like to copy some of my iTunes music in Apple Lossless or AIFF to a flash drive which I would like to insert into a digital media player in my home Hi Fi system. How do I copy the files in these formats. Thank you.

Drag the song files there, either from the iTunes application window or the iTunes Media folder in the Finder.

  • Which is better: Rip from CD or Audio Apple Lossless file

Wich is better for ripping??  For example ripping AAC 320 kpbs, is it better from CD or is it the same from an Audio Apple Lossless File ??
    Thanks

The quality you will get from ripping a CD or converting from an Apple Lossless file to 320kbps would be indistinguishable, at least without sophisticated spectrum analysis (if even then). So I would say to do whatever is most efficient for you.

  • Trouble with flickering after converting AVCHD files to Apple Pro Res 22

    Hi guys.
I have figured out that Apple Pro res 22 is the best format for my AVCHD files.
But I am having trouble with the files after converting them to this format.
Every 60 frames I have a blurred frame.
This results in a flickering effect when watching the clip.
The original MP4 clip (AVCHD) plays fine on the Mac but when I convert is it flickers.
I have captured a still shot of the frame here
    http://www.willpower.net.au/DOWNLOADS/FrameError.jpeg
Here are the settings I am using for the conversion

Here is the converted file in Apple Pro Res 22 format with the flickering
    http://www.willpower.net.au/DOWNLOADS/SANY0007.mov
I'd appreciate any help that you can offer.

Actually I think I might have found the answer.
After diggin deaper into the camera manual I have discovered that the setting I had it on "Full HD" actually is interlaced not progressive. Even though tha badging on the camera says Progressive"
So I think something got lost when converting the files to apple pro res.
I just shot a 10 sec clip on "Full HR" which is the progressive function and it converted nicely.
I'll come back to this post after shooting and making a little test movie today.
    Thanks for your help.
PS. I wonder what codec it actually shoots in. Apparently it is not AVCHD but MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression (I thought that was AVCHD)

  • Apple Lossless 24 bit

    Hello,
I successfully imported a 24 bit / 192 kHz WAV into iTunes 9.0 and converted it to Apple Lossless format. Now I would like to convert my file back to its original format, however the WAV converter seems to be limited to 16 bit / 48 kHz formats. Any suggestions ? Thanks.

Classifying iTunes as a "consumer grade" product is a perfectly valid personal opinion but misses the point of the post.
A Lossless codec is simply a way of storing music without modifying it in a compressed format (think ZIP).
iTunes allows you to read and compress (zip) 24 bit / 192 kHz PCM files but there is no way to retrieve the original file (unzip).
This would be a specification error if Apple was not planning to supply the unzip function (how many products do you know that only give you a zip capability). I do not think this is the case and it is probably an implementation oversight (When the lossless codec got updated to support 24 bit the WAV interface for choosing sample rate / size was forgotten - their defaults being auto). Actually if you read the help file under WAV custom import settings it says "In general, the best choice is Auto, which uses the *same rate* as the original music".
IMHO iTunes should be corrected to take a WAV file and losslessly encode/decode it or give a warning before starting if it cannot deal with it.
And since the code to deal with high resolution files is already there (take a look at QuickTime / Preferences / Audio, and depending on your hardware you can set high resolution audio out) I am still looking for a way around what appears to be a GUI limitation.
    cheers

  • Mp3 to apple lossless conversion

is there any audio advantage converting mp3 to apple lossless in iTunes?
    Ken

No. You will get a much higher file size, but no additional quality.
The advantage of Apple Lossless (and other lossless formats like FLAC) is that it allows you to convert high fidelity sources (like CDs) to smaller file sizes without any loss in quality. This allows you to be guaranteed of CD audio quality, and it also allows you store a long-term archive of lossless file and convert them to different lossy formats to suit different needs, without additional quality loss.
If your source is lossy, like an MP3 file, than any additional fidelity that was present in the original source has already been lost. Apple Lossless will provide a lossless conversion of that MP3 file (meaning you won't lose additional quality, like you would if you converted an MP3 to an AAC file), but it cannot restore the already-lost information.
