It is very similar to what I was able to accomplish right away. I used a standard FW 400 to 800 cable into an Apple FW 800 to Thunderbolt adapter cable ( about 6" long) into my late 2013 IMac 27" w/ Mavericks. I used QT 7 Pro to cut ins & outs and save w/ timecode. Exported out of QT 7 Pro as DV/DVCPRO NTSC. Imported those into FCP X.

I understand that this little app works with FCP X:

  • Audio problem with firewire to thunderbolt adapter

I am running four channels of audio from a Yamaha Motif synthesizer into a new iMac using the firewire to thunderbolt adapter and recording to Logic.   I get very loud distortion.  I unplug the same cord and remove the adapter and run the same audio into my 2011 MacBook Pro and record the audio with no distortion.  I can run MIDI into the iMac using the adapter with no problem.  What gives?

The iMac has three USB and three Thunderbolt.  The Yamaha has Firewire out which carries 16 channels of audio.  It works great with my MacBook Pro, but the Thunderbolt Converter seems to mess it up.  It's fru

  • Firewire to Thunderbolt adaptor works... sort of?

    Hey Guys
Have been trying to sort this problem for ages.   I have a samsung mini dv camera I have used to copy home movies to my computer.  Recently had to buy a new iMac and of course, it has no firewire.  SO, I've bought the firewire to thunderbolt adaptor and while iMovie is now seeing what the camera is playing - the playback is patchy and blotchy.  Any ideas?

I just went through this myself.  Before I upgraded to Yosemite it was working and I read elsewhere that the latest OS doesn't like to work with Analog tapes.  You didn't clarify but I was converting Analog to Digital through various components I had used previously.
After several attempts, what I ended up doing was installing iMovie HD (6) on my machine.  When I tried to open it I got a warning that I couldn't run this software on this OS but you can by-pass that.  Right click the iMovie HD application icon (instead of double-clicking to open) and select 'show contents'.  Navigate down through the folder structure until you see another iMovie HD icon and double-click that.  It by-passes the warning message and works great.
I'm now dumping many old tapes onto my machine.  I plan to use the resulting .dv files (located under the Movies/Media folders) to edit/use in iMovie 10.
Good luck - hope this helps!!

  • If there a cable to convert firewire to usb 3

Is there a cable to convert firewire to usb3

No. If your computer has a Thunderbolt port, you can buy a FireWire adaptor for it.

  • I need to connect my old Mac book pro to the new one to transfer files.  The old one doesn't have Thunderbolt 2 and the new one doesn't have Firewire 800.  Will the Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter or Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter work?

I want to transfer data from my old Mac book pro to my new one using migrate.  The old computer doesn't have Thunderbolt 2 and the new one doesn't have Firewire 800.  Does the Thunderbolt to Firewire or the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter work to connect them and transfer data?
    Thank you!

Yes, use a Firewire cable and the FW to Tbolt adaptor.

  • I want to remove the monitor from my 17" Macbook Pro 2008 to use as an external for my Macbook Pro 15" 2012. How can I convert lvds to Thunderbolt and power the monitor?

I want to remove the monitor from my 17" Macbook Pro 2008 to use as an external for my Macbook Pro 15" 2012. How can I convert lvds to Thunderbolt and power the monitor?

It's almost impossible.  The new iMacs have a Target Display Mode, but it's built to do that.  Without ripping your screen out, finding an acceptable power supply, frame, and whatever electronics to convert a Thunderbolt signal to the screen, the cost will be much larger than buying a cheaper HiDef monitor that runs with an HDMI to Thunderbolt cable to your MacBook 15.  In fact, you can sell your 17" MBP for a lot of money, unless it's broken or something, buying you a really sweet monitor.
By the way, I found your answer by searching this forum.  I would suggest using the search function here in the futuere.

Ok, fair enough.  But since Job's death - Apple's control on leaks has been terrible.  I got the new iPhone, and I like it - but it hasn't made nearly as big as an impression as previous ones.  Because of the vast ammount of leaks.  With the iPad mini leaks, it's 99% sure to come out next week.
Apple uses many manufacturers and it's massive also websites prefer to report on Apple whether true or false because it brings more hits.
Amd by "others" I meant other people on iPads - not other devices/manufacturers.  It's possible to do so, I just want to know how.  I honestly don't think we'll ever be in a Post-PC era until all tablets allow us to use USB in the way computers do.
No, USB is not the future, you missed the memo about cloud and wireless computing?

  • Adapter for usb 2.0 to Firewire or thunderbolt

I have an iMac with USB 2.0 Firewire 800 and Thunderbolt.
I bought a Seagate External Drive with USB 3.0. On the BOX of the Hard Drive it says can upgrade speed transfer by connecting an adapter for firewire or thunderbolt (not included).
I was told there was an adapter that I can purchase to insert on to the end of the USB 2.0 cable of the hard drive so that I can plug it into my firewire slot or thunderbolt slot. I hope this makes sense as my google search comes up saying it's impossible to do. Why offer this on the box if there is no such adapter?
It's currently plugged into my USB 2.0 slot but would like faster transfer speed as I access this drive continuosly.

Awesome, ok now we're getting somewhere.... the link you provided shows what I actually have right now. As far as the connection of the USB 3.0. I think what I need is the a base for a Firewire cable or Thunderbolt and NOT for a USB 3.0. I wonder if they have those types of bases to swap out on the external drive?
I'll have a look at my Hard Drive and check it out. Perhaps I read the box wrong too because it shows pictures of cables... not bases for the EHD
Also not sure if they will ship this to an Australian address as I live in Australia.

  • Connectiong an external thunderbolt hard drive to an older iMac via firewire to thunderbolt adapter, as my Mac doesn't have any thunderbolt entry?

Is there a possibility to connect an external thunderbolt hard drive to my iMac (originally Leopard 10.5.8. upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.3) via firewire to thunderbolt adapter, as my Mac doesn't have any thunderbolt, but has two firewire entries?
Would like to use the hard drive's big data stocking capacity of 8TB, but actual WD-HDDs of such a capacity have no more other entries than thunderbolt.

Basically, no.  The Thunderbolt-Firewire adapter does not work "in reverse,"  meaning, you have to have a Thunderbolt port on your Mac in order to use it.
Most Thunderbolt drives that I have seen also have a USB 3 port.  You could use that, but on on an older Mac that does not have a USB 3 port you will be limited to USB 2 speeds.

  • How do I conect video recorder to Macbook Prowith firewire to thunderbolt

I can"t connect Canon Mini DV with firewire to thunderbolt.

I am pretty sure that there is way to record
directly to hard drive without going through
recording to tape and from tape to hard drive
    but can't find the solution.<
    Ian's answer is spot on.
We see this post about once a week so you can scroll down or search the forum and find all of the reasons recording directly to your drive is not recommended.

  • Firewire to Thunderbolt conversion cable problem

I got a new  iMac in November, I finally got back to coverting my videos and, of course, I bought the Firewire to Thunderbolt coversion cable.  Now, however, under my hardware, in the thunderbolt bus, it shows the conversion cable as attached, but I don't see my ADVC 110.  I do find it under hardware in the Firewire bus listing.   My Software (both Handbrake and iMovie cant find my ADVC 110.  Has anyone heard of this before and does anyone have a correction for this?

I've been having issues with my firewire drives on Thunderbolt adapter for some time. I have two firewire drives connected in series and then plugged into TB adapter of my MacBook Pro. The drives have the following issues:
    * Sometimes do not eject properly
    * Sometimes go offline for no reason (not ejected, and will crash any software, including finder, that tries to construct a representation of the files available on the still-mounted drive).
The issue (including crash of iTunes or Finder) resolves itself if I power down either of the drives without ejecting (or upon unsuccessfully ejecting). It appears that on TB, the firewire serial bus protocol has been compromised such that the drives in serial connection do not play well together, anymore.

  • Firewire to Thunderbolt Adaptor

Is the Firewire to Thunderbolt adaptor good for both Firewire 400 and Firewire 800?

It is FireWire 800 but you can use it with FireWire 400 devices with a FW800 to FW400 cable or adapter

  • HT204350 The instructions for "Migrating using FireWire or ThunderBolt" are WRONG

The instructions for "Migrating using FireWire or ThunderBolt" in this article are wrong for a transfer from a Mountain Lion Mac to a Mavericks Mac.  You should not put the source Mac in target disk mode.  Rather, you should start up Migration Assistant on the source Mac and choose "To another Mac"

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Can data be migrated between Macbooks using firewire to thunderbolt?

Can data be transferred using 'migration assistant' via a firewire to thunderbolt link between a Macbook Pro (W80190Z2AGV) and Macbook Pro Retina (C02JC08BF51R)? Both have OSX 10.8.4. Or is there a better/faster alternative to transfer data?

The only thing faster would be Gigabit Ethernet, using the Thunderbolt to Ethernet adaptor. But there's not much in it (800 vs 1000). You'd need a Cat6 cable as well.

  • Any word on a firewire to thunderbolt cable?  Got a new MacBook Pro and can't do any work on it til I can get to my data that's stored on my firewire-accessible external hard drive!

Any word on a firewire to thunderbolt cable?  Got a new MacBook Pro and no way to access my data because my data is stored on an external hard drive accessible only by firewire!

This is really starting to be annoying.  Apple said this adapter would be available in July.
Of course we could always buy the Thunderbolt Display.  For $999.  Complete with USB 2 ports.  That's not why we bought your MBP-Retina, Guys.  We expected connectivity -- high speed connectivity -- as you promised.
I also had an Apple store rep tell me that the adapter would be availble in September.  Hate to say it but it feels like Apple is resorting to selling vaporware.  It's a page out of the Bill Gates play book.
