Converting footage from 23.97 to 29.97

I have a HD1080 footage uncompressed at the frame rate of 23.97
I would like convert it into a 29.97 frame rate. What is the best way in Final Cut to maintain the same kind of quality from the original footage?
Right now I put the clip in the Timeline with the frame rate of 29.97 and exported it out with a 29.97 frame rate. Is this the best way to do it or is there another way?

Why did you shoot 23.98 then? Or capture 23.98? If they wanted 29.97, you should have known that and made sure to get them that. BUT, that is a lesson for next time.
Don't assume anything...ask. Ask them why they want 29.97. Is it that they have to deliver 29.97? Or that they need 29.97 for proper show timing? Is it only the OUTPUT that they need at 29.97? Because I work on shows shot at 23.98, edited at 23.98, but then converted....output...as 29.97 via a capture card. Pulldown handled nicely.
But you need to know the WHY. That is very important in this case. And again, never assume anything...always ask. Assuming can get you in real hot water.

  • Converting footage from 25 fps to 24fps

    Hi
I've got a shoot coming up where we will be using a canon 7D at 24fps and a Sony Z5 at 25fps. I want the finished output to be at 24fps so was considering converting the footage from the Z5 to match the 7D.
Firstly, is this advisable? are the results going to be any good?
Secondly, what's the best way to do it. I was thinking about converting in Cinema Tools, is that the best way?
I always use the 7D and love the 24fps but cost restrictions mean the Z5 has to be used for B roll, normally I would rent a second 7D.
    Any help gratefully received.
    Adrian

Capture the Z5 footage as ProRes...or convert after. Then use the Cinema Tool CONFORM option to conform from 25 to 24fps. Slight speed change, but not that noticable. That is the BEST way to do it.

  • Converting footage from vhs for use in FCP

Got some old VHS tapes that I want to get over to a digital format.
I know someone with the gear to convert VHS to DVD, but what I really want is to get the data in DV format on my Mac/FCP and this guy uses PC.
I have an old VHS player, but no real gear, cables etc.
What is the best option here? I'm fairly well versed in FCP but not so much on the data conversion side.
    Thanks

so maybe I'll try that first. They've already been
converted once from 8mm tape to VHS, so I really
don't want to convert them too many more times if I
    can help it...<
But the 8mm tapes are gone, yes?
Someday the VHS copies will not longer work. </div>
I know, that is why I am trying to get it off the VHS tapes and into DV (for long term storage) and DVD (for short term storage/playback).
No, the 8mm (not film, but the Sony tape format) are still around, but my dad's old video camera is on it's last legs and he converted them to VHS so I could play them (even though I haven't had a VHS player for years - but I managed to get one though).
In my above statement, just meant that I was looking for the path of least resistance (least amount of conversions) to get the tape into the Digital Age.
    Thanks!

  • How do I convert footage from my iPhone to edit in final cut pro?

I have some video's that I shot with my iPhone 3Gs and also hidef video that I shot from my iPhone 4. When I try to edit these in FCP, it makes me render every time I slow the footage or put any effect on the footage. Is there a way to just convert the footage I have into media that is easier to view and edit without having to render every time you want to see the results?
    Thanks,
    Caleb

You should be able to use Compressor or MPEG Streamclip to convert the footage to a format that will match your FCP Sequence settings.

  • Converting footage from pal to ntsc

Is it recommended to convert pal footage to ntsc without loss of quality especially that we have other footage in the timeline which is ntsc
and the final product should be ntsc format or work in pal and convert the exported movie to ntsc using some sort of a converter?

    Denis,
Compressor standard conversion works best with progressive, iframe based material. The one tool that really does a great job (especially with interlaced material) using enhanced and more intelligent standard conversion algorithms remains [Nattress|http://www.nattress.com/Products/standardsconversion/standardsconvers ion.htm].
Having said that, Compressor can still do a decent job.

  • Should you convert footage anyway from a 7d?

I have been experiencing fcpx running VERY slow. This next project will be saved on an external drive and I'll convert the footage from my Canon 7d like I had to do in fcp 7.
    Any thoughts out there...

    Hi Ironi,
MTR is just for "ripping" any copy protection on a commercial... HB does so either PLUS it converts into lossy mpeg4...
you're goal, to make DVD content editable can only be reached by converting the footage into "dv".
there are many tools on the market doing so, the mentioned Streamclipper (free, but you need addtionally the Apple mpeg2 plugin for 20$...)
for a beginner, I recommend DVDxDV, it has a 30d trial period (testdrive sets a watermark)... and costs 25$.
for sure, ANY converting of a DVD is lossy, because the format of the DVD itself is lossy... I know, it doesn't look so on TV, but in technical terms it is... don't judge the quality of conversion on your Mac's screen... as you know, pic quality can only be judged on TV....
    hope, that helps..........

  • Importing footage from sony HDR-SR12 to External for later use in imovie?

Hi all, I have a question, I would like to save my movie footage which is on my sony HDR-SR12 to a external drive(G Raid1TB) so I can view and also import clips to imovie for making movie's later. I have partitioned the Ext HD 150gb for photos and 781gb for movie footage. Just out of curiosity I mounted my camera and pressed get info and the format on the sony camera is MS-Dos(fat32) does this matter at all?  Also which is the best way or how do I  import the footage from sony hdr-sr12 to the external Hd. I have never done this before so your help would be greatly appreciated, I don't want to mess up.
    Thank You
    Jess

I should have mentioned, it is a good idea to make an archive copy of your AVCHD footage before importing. You should be able to do this from the FILE menu in iMovie. This will preserve the AVCHD files exactly as they were on the camera.
When you import, you convert the AVCHD files (which are highly compressed) into Apple Intermediate Codec, which is suitable for editing.
If you want to make sure that your archive copy is working properly, you can import from your archive copy, rather than importing directly from the camera. This is a good way to make sure you have a good archive copy before erasing the video on the camera.

  • Capturing Footage From Composite / S-Video into FCE

I want to capture some footage from analogue sources into my Mac. It can either be via composite or S-Video but my question is : Which gizmo should I use to convert the analogue signal into DV?
The Canopus range seems like it would do the trick (ADVC55, 110 or 300, with the 55 closest to my price-point.) But the specs say it's compatible with FCP, and don't mention FCE explicitly. If I buy it, will it work, or is there some particular difference between FCP and FCE, that means it won't?
    Mac Mini 1.42   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Canopus works just fine with FCE. I've been using my ADVC 110 with two versions of FCE for two years and it works fine ... the 300 should be even better cuz of the built in TBC. I know from others that you will have no compatibility probs.

  • Importing footage from JVC camera in FCP6

    Hi all,
I am working with a JVC Everio HD camera (I think it is the GZ-EX250).  I can't find a way to import footage directly into FCP6. It seems the only way to get the footage in there is to import it into iMovie (I have iMovie 8), then export it as a Quicktime, and then import the Quicktime into FCP. I've done this with footage that was shot using this camera in SD mode. My understanding is that if I want to shoot in HD that I'll havge to convert the footage before bringing it into iMovie. Seems like a pretty cumbersome process. Maybe I'm missing something. Does anyone know how to import my HD footage from this camera directly into FCP6?
I hope my explanation makes enough sense for someone to give me a good answer. Let me know if you need more information. Thanks very much in advance!
    Andy
MacBook Pro (running OSX 10.5.8, 2.4 GHz INtel Core Duo, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM).

Great tutorial - easy to follow. I notice I only had two preferences listed for importing - there was no setting for Apple Pro Res 422 (LT) so I used Apple ProRes 422. Is the lack of choices because I'm using FCP6 not 7, or do the preferences get added as you hook up different cameras? At any rate, thanks for the help!

  • Exporting HD footage from Avid (PC) for use in FCP (MAC)

    Hello,
Here is my issue, there was and HD shoot of my business for local promotional use. I wanted the footage for marketing purposes down the road. I put together most of our promotional video using FCP 5.1.4. The footage was edited on a PC Avid system and exported using an animation codac to quicklime. (This is what the editor said would work)
The footage will not play back correctly, starts off playing for the first second or so and freezes. When I import it into a sequence and render it I can here audio but the canvas remains black. Before I have them export this thing again I wanted to make sure it wasn't an issue on my end. Below are the clip details and CPU info. Thanks in advance for any help.
Clip: 1920 x 1080, 29.97fps, Apple lossless Animation compression, Data rate 190.2 MB/sec, Pixel aspect ratio: square

Animation files are much too large data-wise to play back. YOu need to use Compressor to convert them into a codec that is more editable. DVCPRO HD for example...or ProRes. Depending on what hard drives you are trying to play this footage from.
Animation is a good transfer codec, but it needs to be converted.

  • How do i import footage from a dvd that i made on imovie, back into imovie?

How do I import footage from a dvd that i made on imovie, back into imovie?

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • How could i get footage from camera to FCP with no firewire

I have a Imac late 2009 21.5 with a broken fire wire. How can i get footage from Canon XM 1(tape only) to FCP I have a PC that has firewire that works have loaded footage to Movie Maker and put it on a USB flash Drive put that into mac but cant convert it with MPEG clip stream as planed. Any thoughts? I thought second hand mac mini may do the job. Repair firewire £653.14

Without firewire, you cannot capture from that camera in FCP.  It only works via firewire.  So you need another computer or fix that firewire.
Your other method...seems ugly.  Ads layers of compression that might make it look ugly.
Borrow a friends machine with FCP if you can.

  • Capturing footage from Camera using USB port

Quick question, that I need help with. I have final cut pro and I am trying to capture footage from a Sony Handy Cam. It only has the option to use a use connection to my mac.
In Final Cut pro, I can't figure out how to set it up to capture from the camera. If anyone can help and/or walk me through the process, that would be a great help.
    Thanks.

    Hi:
What kind of camere is it: DVD or hard drive?
If it's a DVD one you can use MPEG Streamclip to convert the MPEG2 files to an editable format like DV.

  • Problem Importing Footage From a DVD

I had posted a question about a week ago asking how to import footage from a DVD into FCE. Per Tom Wolsky's suggestion -- thank you very much-- I connected my DVD player to an analog/digital converter in order to capture my video material. Although FCE is recognizing the DVD player (evident by the fact that when I click "capture" the video is displayed in the capture window ), however, FCE won't actually capture the video when I click "capture now".
When the "capture now" window pops up it displays the message: "Waiting for time code. Device must be in VTR mode when device control is enabled." I can't figure out how how to correct. It seems that I'm only one step away from my objective of capturing the DVD. Would appreciate any guidance to get me over this final hurdle. Thanks.

Yes. ANY time you want to capture from a non-timecoded or non-controllable source, use that setting.
