Converting from Appleworks Database to ?

Others have asked this question, but I’m not seeing any definitive answers. I see that some people are having no problem with their Appleworks docs after converting to Leopard, others are having big problems. I don’t want to take any chances, seeing that Appleworks is on its way out anyway, and I’ll have to face this sooner or later. What can I do with my Appleworks database? Is there any way to convert it over to iWork, Office, or something else? If not, I’ll just have to take a few days “off” to do it all by hand and create an entirely new database...but what would be the best program to do that, and be able to do all that the Appleworks database can do?

There just isn't a replacement for AppleWorks' database that can do even half of what AppleWorks does. I've been moving most of my databases to Numbers. I can sort & filter the data but there is no way to merge anything with Pages. I've left feedback for both Pages & Numbers asking for this functionality.
To move the data to Numbers, I view my AppleWorks database as a list, select all, copy & then paste into a Numbers table. This retains any formatting I've applied.

  • Printing calendar of dates from Appleworks database

Is there a calendar program that will print a monthly calendar and pull birthdays and anniversaries from an appleworks database file (or from a bento file)? This is much like mailmerge does, except I want the calendar date to pull all records with that date as a birthday or anniversary.

Actually, it's quite different from a mail merge, and quite a bit more complicated.
A mail merge inserts data from a specific field into a specific location a word processor document, and produces a separate document for each visible record in the database.
Using the AppleWorks database, you could get separate lists of anniversaries and birthdays for a single month, then use cut and paste to transfer those into a (spreadsheet) calendar either one at a time or collectively as a list below the calendar grid.
I see a few issues that may arise with long names and multiple b'days/annivs on the same date.
Post a reply if you want to pursue this.

  • Converting database from appleworks

    Hello
I have been finding that appleworks no longer seems to function, so I have gradually been transfering my wordprocessing and spreadsheet documents to iWork. I now need to convert my appleworks database to another format, because, as I mentioned, Applework does not seem to function properly any more.
I know almost nothing about computers, but I cant get my head round the fact that neither do the people who produce software
what I am referring to is the childishly ludicrous situation whereby Apple have created iWork without a database application. - surely it could and should have been foreseen that this would eventually get Appleworks users into a very difficult situation i.e. they would have built databases which could not be readily converted to another format.
Perhaps I'm missing something, but wasn't it a bit daft for iWork to have wordprocessing and spreadsheet apps but no database?
    Regards

You cannot open an Appleworks database in anything else (and I agree about iWork). You can export a database as tab or comma delimited text (of course you lose all formatting and any calculation fields) but obviously you need to use AW to do that.
However it should work perfectly well on Tiger or Leopard. There are steps you can take to get it to work; please see the second post in this thread:

What database program will convert my Appleworks DB for use on Intel platform?

Yes, you just need the appleworks folder from applications.
However, whether or not this is strictly legal is another question entirely, I'm afraid, unless you are planning to remove appleworks from your computer. You could just buy her her own copy of Appleworks, too.

  • Convert text from Appleworks 5 to Pages?

My grandfater just got a new iMac to replace his old OS 9 one.
All his files (memoirs, geneology, etc) are in Appleworks 5.0.4
His new iMac has Pages. I've figured out how to get the files to the new iMac, but Pages says that it's from an unsupported version.
He's resigned to re-typing everything in.
I can't believe that Apple doesn't provide an upward compatibility path!
How do I convert his files?
      Windows XP Pro

    Welcome to Apple Discussions ryann
Pages is only able to open AppleWorks 6 word processing documents. If you don't have AppleWorks 5 any more or have a Mac that can't run Classic, there are some other options to get those AppleWorks 5 word processing documents into Pages.
icWord from Panergy Software is able to open AppleWorks 5 word processing files & save them as AppleWorks 6 which Pages will open. It may be able to do a batch conversion. You can download a fully-functional trial from the web site. The price for the "unlocked" version is quite reasonalbe, about $20 US. A better bargain if your grandfather also has AppleWorks 5 spreadsheets would be the icWord/icExcel bundle for about $30.
MacLink Plus by DataViz is more expensive, but does have more translators. Even so, I don't think even it has translators for AppleWorks database or drawn documents.
It is too bad that Pages can't open AppleWorks 5 WP files, but, considering that AppleWorks 6 has been around since March, 2000, I imagine it was decided (wrongly, of course), that everyone using AppleWorks 5 had moved to AppleWorks 6.

  • Problem in Database convertion from US7ASCII to UTF8

    Hi,
We are facing the following problem while converting the database from US7ASCII to UTF8:
We have recently changed the database character set from US7ASCII to UTF8 for the internationalization
purpose. We ran the Character set scanner utility and it did report that some data may pose problems.
We followed the the below mentioned process to convert into UTF8 -
    1) alter database character set utf8
    2) alter database national character set utf8.
Now we find some problem while working with the old data in our application which is java based.
We are getting the following error "java.sql.SQLException: Fail to convert between UTF8 and UCS2: failUTF8Conv".
We further analyzed our data and found some interesting things :
    e.g.
    DB - UTF8.
    NL_LANG also set to UTF8.
    Select name from t1 where name like 'Gen%';
    NAME
    Genhve
But when we find out the length of the same data it show like this
    NAME LENGTH(NAME) VSIZE(NAME)
    Genhve 4 6
The question is why is it showing length as 4 only and when we try to use a substr function
its extracting like the following :-
    select name,substr(name,4,1) from t1 where name like 'Gen%';
    NAME SUB
    Genhve hve
We have execute the above queries on US7ASCII DB and it is working fine, length it shows 6
and using SUBSTR it extracts just 'h' as well.
We also used dump function on the UTF8 Db for the above query,,this is the result :-
    select name,length(name),vsize(name),dump(name) from t1 where name like 'Gen%';
    NAME LENGTH(NAME) VSIZE(NAME) DUMP(NAME)
    Genhve 4 6 Typ=1 Len=6: 71,101,110,232,118,101
We checked a lot with the data and it seems 'h' (accented e) is posing the problem.
We want to know where is the problem and how to overcome this.
Further, we tried all of the following :
    1)
    Export Server: US7ASCII
Export Client: did not set NLS_LANG / NLS_CHAR, so presumably US7ASCII as well
Import Client: did not set NLS_LANG / NLS_CHAR, so presumably US7ASCII as well
    Import Server: UTF8
    RESULT: Acute e became h
    2)
    Export Server: US7ASCII
Export Client: did not set NLS_LANG / NLS_CHAR, so presumably US7ASCII as well
    Import Client: NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8 and NLS_CHAR=UTF8
    Import Server: UTF8
    RESULT: IMP 00016 error
    3)
    Export Server: US7ASCII
    Export Client: NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8 and NLS_CHAR=UTF8
Import Client: did not set NLS_LANG / NLS_CHAR, so presumably US7ASCII as well
    Import Server: UTF8
    RESULT: Acute E became h
    4)
    Export Server: US7ASCII
    Export Client: NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8 and NLS_CHAR=UTF8
    Import Client: NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8 and NLS_CHAR=UTF8
    Import Server: UTF8
    RESULT: Acute e became h
    5)
    Tried using Update sys.props$
    set value$='UTF8'
    where name='NLS_CHARACTERSET'
RESULT: Acute e shows properly but it gives problem in the application
    "java.sql.SQLException: Fail to convert between UTF8 and UCS2: failUTF8Conv"
Looking further it was observed the following:
when you try this command on a column 'city' in a table which contains 'Genhva' (note the acute e after n), it shows
command: select length(city), vsize(city),substr(city,4,1),city from cities
    Result: 4 6 hva Genhva
if you see the value of substr(city,4,1) , you will see the problem. Also note that the length shows 4 and size shows 6. Moreover, when these records are selected through JDBC Driver, it starts giving problems.
    6)
Actually the above (point no. 5) is similar to changing the character set of the database with 'ALTER DATABASE CHARACTER SET UTF8'. Same problem is observed then too.
    7)
We have also tried to with another method, that is by changing the third byte of the export file which specifies the character set, to the UTF8 code by editing the export file with a Hexdecimal editor. After import the same problem has been observed as defined in (5) and (6) above.
We have no more ideas how to migrate without corrupting the data. Of course we have known the records where these characters occur through the Oracle's cssacn utility but we do not want to manually rectify each and every record by replacing it with an ASCII character. Any other idea as to how this can be accomplised?
    Thanx
    Ashok

The problem you have is that although your original database is defined as US7ASCII, the data it contains is more than is covered by this code page (as the reply on Sept 4 to the previous posting already said).
This has probably happened because the client was also defined as US7ASCII, and when the DB and client are defined as having the same character set no conversion (or checdking) takes place when data is passed between them. However if you are using a Windows client then it will in fact be using Windows code page 1252 (Latin-1) or similar, and this allows many more characters, including h (accented e). So a user can enter all these characters and store them in the database, and similarly read them from the database, because data transfer is transparent.
When you did ALTER DATABASE CHARACTER SET UTF8 this will only change the label on the database, but not affect the contents. However only part of the contents are valid UTF8, any character above 7F (like h) is invalid. If your original client now uses the database, code page transformation will take place because the client and DB have different character sets defined. The invalid codes can then cause problems.
Without being able to explain what has happened in detail, it may help to see what your h (dec 232, x'E8') looks like. The actual data has not changed (you can see this as it is reported as 232). However the binary code there (11101000) is invalid UTF8. UTF8 encodes a character in 1 to 4 bytes, and the first bits in a UTF8 character tell how many bytes it uses. 0xxx tell it is one byte (same as the corresponding USASCII character), 110x that it uses 2 bytes, 1110 that it uses 3 bytes etc. So if you interpret what is there as UTF8 it looks like the first byte of a 3-byte character, which explains why the substringing is giving you the other 2 bytes as well.
Can you fix this without losing data? I believe yes. First you should check what other characters are being flagged by the scan. See if these are contained in another standard character set. If they are only Western European accentet characters then WE8ISO8859P1 is probably ok, but watch out for the euro sign which Windows has at x'80', an undefined character in ISO8859-1.
You can see the contents of the Microsoft Windows Codepage 1252 at: http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/reference/sbcs/1252.htm
For a listing of the US-ASCII defined characters see http://czyborra.com/charsets/iso646.html and for ISO 8859-1 see http://czyborra.com/charsets/iso8859.html#ISO-8859-1
If all is well, you can first ALTER DATABASE CHARACTER SET to WE8ISO8859P1. This will not change any data, but ensure that all the data gets exported. Then export the DB and import it to a UTF8 DB. This will convert the non-US-ASCII characters to Unicode. You will also have to change the clients character set to something other than USASCII or they will just see ? for the other characters.
    Good Luck!

asktom.oracle.com has an excellent article on writing a PL/SQL procedure that dumps data to an Excel spreadsheet-- search for 'Excel' and it'll come up.
You can also use your favorite connection protocol (ODBC, OLE DB, etc) to connect from Excel to Oracle and pull the data out that way.

  • One page "report" from an AppleWorks database???

I'm wondering if it is possible to create a one-page "report" (layout?) that can display some summary values calculated from my database. I am currently using a database to keep track of the students in a small school, and I would like to be able to print up a page that shows each classroom number with teacher name, followed by a number of students in that class. The database records are the students, and each record includes a class number and teacher name. I feel like I have a decent understanding of how AppleWorks databases work, but while this seems like a reasonable thing that I would like to do, I can't think of how to go about doing it. I'm starting to think that maybe I have to have a second, separate database for the teachers and track the number of students per class that way. But AppleWorks doesn't have a way of sharing information across two databases, does it?
    Ugh.

    Hi Terry,
I'm wondering if it is possible to create a one-page "report" (layout?) that can display some summary values calculated from my database. I am currently using a database to keep track of the students in a small school, and
It should be possible, assuming I understand the question.
I would like to be able to print up a page that shows each classroom number with teacher name, followed by a number of students in that class.
Do you want a list of some of the students in the class, or do you want a number showing how many students are in that class? My assumption is the second.
The database records are the students, and each record includes a class number and teacher name.
As you say "A" class number and (A) teacher name, I'm assuming that there is only one teacher's name associated with each student, and only one class number associated with each student (and I suspect that all students with the same Teacher have the same class number).
AppleWorks doesn't have a way of sharing information across two databases, does it?
    No.
Given the above assumptions, here's a plan:
Existing fields (ALL Text type fiends):
    'Name' (containing student's name)
    'Room' (containing class number)
    'Teacher' (containing teacher's name)
New fields (ALL Summary type fields. Formula given after field name):
    'Namesum' COUNT('Name')
    'Roomsum' 'Room'
    'Teachsum' 'Teacher'
    Make a new Blank Layout.
Insert Part... Subsummary when sorted by 'Teacher'
    Insert Part... Header
Insert the three new Summary type fields onto the new layout and place them in a horizontal line in the Subsummary part.
Edit the labels, then place place them in the Header part and directly above the field to which each applies. Add any other information you want in the header using a text frame.
Adjust the part boundary to give some white space below the three fields.
Drag the Body boundary up to the boundary above it to delete the body part from the layout.
    Return to Browse mode.
    To see the results:
    Sort the database by Teacher.
Check Page View in the Window menu.

    Barry

  • Utl_file output converted from database characterset

I have a developer that is sending output to a file using utl_file. Here is a snippet of his code:

  • Can I transfer appleworks databases to some other app in order to print mailing labels?

Can I transfer appleworks databases to Bento or elsewhere on my new MacBook Pro in order to print mailing labels, or do I have to re-enter all the information?

Word Processing documents can be opened directly in Pages 4 (AppleWorks 6 only) but this is no longer available - the newPages 5 (Mavericks required) does not open AppleWorks documents. Panergy Software's docXConverter v3.2 ($19.95) can convert Appleworks 5 and 6 Word Processing documents to RTF (though it has been reported that it can only handle documents which contain only text, not those which include images or frames). The latest version of the free LibreOffice has announced that it can open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing documents: it does appear to be able to handle at least some embedded images.
Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store, and you will need v4.0 'Retro' not the most recent version) or Intaglio (though this appears not to be able to handle very complex drawings).
Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in the older versions of  Numbers - the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available.
Presentations can be opened directly only in the older versions Keynote again the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available.
To use other programs, or open Painting or Database documents at all, you must export from AppleWorks first. Nothing will open AW database documents.
If you have upgraded to Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks and have AppleWorks documents you cannot open, then you should be able to install Snow Leopard on an external hard disk and start from that (provided that the Mac did not come with anything higher than Snow Leopard originally installed); and success has been reported in running Snow Leopard under emulation in Parallels - the method is described here: it seems complex; however Snow Leopard Server may still be available in the Apple Store (by telephone) at a reduced price and this makes the process a lot easier. I haven't tried either method: use at your own discretion. You can then run AppleWorks as an emergency measure.

I could have sworn that I had success last week opening an AppleWorks database file, choosing "Save As..." and then saving my database as a text file. However, I am trying to do this right now, and "text" is not available as an option when I choose "Save As..." I'm starting to wonder if maybe I am mistaken and that I was never able to do this. I have read several forum posts where folks have made reference to "save your database as text," but I'm starting to doubt that this can be done. If an AppleWorks database CANNOT be saved as text, then I am stunned. I recently bought FileMaker Pro 8.5, and I would be absolutely bewildered if there was no way to move an AppleWorks database over to FileMaker. Converting to text isn't pretty, but at least that would work. But is it true that I am not able to save an AppleWorks database as text? Is there any other way to move data from an AppleWorks database file to FileMaker?

    Hello
Saving as text is the only way to transfert AW6 data to FileMaker.
As you are unable to do that, I assumes that you moved AppleWorks out of its standard folder where it must stay with its companions folders:
    Starting Points
    AppleWorks Essentials
The translators are stored in "AppleWorks Essentials:Translators" folder.
If you moved the app, it would be unable to find (and use) these translators.
I wish to add that I don't like this formulae.
When I need to save a database as a text file, I activate a layout containing all the fields (at least all those which are not calculated ones.
I select Options > Show all records then, I copy all ans paste into a new WP documentwhich I save as an ASCII file.
    Doing that,
-- I keep the contents of longtext fields (1004 characters)
-- I keep the comma which is used in france as decimal separator (it is replaced by a period when I save directly as a text file).
Now, Santa Claus is tired and leaves you to sleep;-)
