Converting FW jpg to Illustrator ai

Question

I've only been using FW for a few months, all self-taught,
and I need to convert a jpg in FW to an Illustrator compatible
file. I've tried the "Save as..." option, choosing "*.ai", and I'm
having trouble. Everything appears to work well at first, until I
try to open the .ai file - all that I see is a box (appears as a
transparent canvas) with an X across it.
I'm not sure what other options/preferences could be causing
a problem, and have tried everything that appears to be blatantly
obvious. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have the original PNG file from FW, and it contains
vector art,
You may be able to save it out as an ai file with some degree
of
success. But a jpeg is not vector based as Joey indicates.
