Converting HDV project to Standard-Def

Need help with a project shot in HDV1080i60. I need to deliver it to a client in standard def on mini-dv tape.
I am currently exporting to standard def via EXPORT>QUICKTIME MOIVE. Then re-import footage and PRINT TO VIDEO. Problem is this:
1. Footage has pixelaxtion issues, almost looks like a "line doubling" or interlacing problem.
2. Footage looses the 16:9 ratio, Would like options to keep it either letterboxed 16:9 or standard 4:3.
Any takers?

Yes you do. Here's the setup for Canon HV20:
1. With camcorder in playback mode select the menu button.
2. Select the 2nd item (PLAY/OUT SETUP1)
3. Select the 1st item (PLAYBACK STD) -- Its probably set to A -- which means automatic.
4. Change the PLAYBACK STD to DV. Select YES to confirm.
5. Close the menu.
Make sure you do this prior to connecting the camcorder to the computer. See page 40 of the Canon HV20 User Manual.

  • HDV 1080i to Standard def DVD "Ken Stone" method- interlace problems, help!

    Greetings,
I am on a tight deadline to produce a standard def DVD for an art exhibit, from HDV material that was imported and edited natively in FCP 7 as 1080i. I used the "Ken Stone" method of exporting the 10 minute sequence using QT conversion, as a pro res 422 HQ quicktime movie, then I took it into compressor 3.5 to make a Mpeg-2 file for a standard def DVD.
The problem is that the video that came out of compressor, when simulated in DVD SP 3.5 (and also when burned on DVD) has weird "interlaced" looking edges whenever there is movement in the video. It is a figure against a black background, and whenever the figure moves back and forth against the black background, the edges of the figure show interlaced-looking lines. The rest of the video where there is slow movement looks fine. BTW, motion was set to "Best" in compressor.
What am I doing wrong? was there something not mentioned in Stone's walk-thru, having to do with de-interlacing, or something I have missed? Is there a better way to produce a standard def DVD from HDV 1080i material?
Thank you so much for your help. I am down to the wire on this one...

exporting the 10 minute sequence using QT conversion, as a pro res 422 HQ quicktime movie...
You are adding an unneeded compression cycle for a start. Export with QuickTime Conversion always recompresses your footage, even when you use the same settings as your Timeline.
Export to QuickTime with Current Settings, Self Contained will give you a Master file that is identical to what you edited.
weird "interlaced" looking edges whenever there is movement in the video...
If your source material is interlaced it will look odd on a computer monitor. It will display correctly on a TV set.
having to do with de-interlacing, or something I have missed?
Deinterlacing will throw away half of the vertical resolution. Bye bye HD. No good can come of that, right?
What is your intended delivery format? Does the method that you are currently using to view the material compare with how the end product will be seen?

  • HDV NTSC content to PAL standard def

I have a sequence from NTSC HDV camcorders captured as ProRes 4.2.2. My target is a PAL standard def DVD made with Toast 10. Toast will do the NTSC conversion, but is that the best quality path? In theory, this should look a lot better than a standard def NTSC to PAL conversion, right?
    MikeR

My target is a PAL standard def DVD
99% of PAL set top DVD players will also play back NTSC titles without issue.
Computers don't care whether the disc is NTSC or PAL.
If this is just a one-off disc, check with the recipient. There might be no need to convert at all.

  • What is the best compressor setting to use ... when exporting a 720p timeline from FCP for a project that will only be played back in a standard def monitor?

What is the best compressor setting to use for DVD StudioPro ... when exporting a 720p 30 timeline from FCP for a project that will only be viewed in a standard def monitor?

Update: The iBook can play any 480p video and higher if I encode them with DivX and in AVI format. But of course this is not compatible with my iPhone 4. At least I can shrink my library now and get away from the full MPEG-2s. I don't get why I can't use Apple's h264 though. There has to be a setting I am missing. The sample Apple h264 videos from the days of Tiger worked flawlessly on my iBook when it was new so the CPU must be capable of decoding it. I really can't understand this.
Also, since I made my videos in English for my family, I had to create soft subtitles for my wife's Chinese family, and I can't get players like QT with perian or MPlayerX to sync them properly to an AVI encoded with DivX, they only sync well with the iPhone 4 m4v/mp4 formatted files I made. This is a real pickle.
So now I may need three or four copies of each video, LOL. I need to hardcode the subtitles if I want to use AVI to playback on older machines, and keep the mp4 file for the iDevices too, while keeping higher quality h264 videos for my American relatives...
If h264 is compatible with my iBook, what is the proper encoding settings? Must I dramatically lower the settings or frame rate? I can settle on 2 copies of each video that way. One iBook/G4/eMac compatible video that syncs correctly with my srt soft subs, and another version that works well with my iPhone 4 and iPad.
All in all, I will end up with more than 3 or 4 version of each video. On my late G5 dual core I have the full 720-1080p uncompressed master files. On my i5 iMac I have the h264 compressed versions for distribution, and lower versions for my iDevices. Now I need to keep either full MPEG-2 files for the iBook to play, or convert to older formats like DivX AVI for our family's legacy machines. I am running out of hard disk space quick now, LOL.
    Is there an easier way?

  • Converting a HDV project to HDCAM?

I have a project that I am finishing in FCS2 - I used the Apple HDV codec. I need to convert it to HDCAM but know nothing about the process. I didn't see anything in the forum. Could anyone tell me what I need to do to convert?
    Thanks!

HDCAM isn't a codec....it is a tape format. What you need to do is rent an HDCAM deck, buy an HD capture card and output to HDCAM. Or take your HDV project...or outputted file...to a post facility with FCP and an HDCAM deck and have them output it.
I output HDV all the time to HDCAM SR. Twice a week.

  • FCE4 - can I convert HD footage to Standard Definition to put on a DVD

My Panasonic HD camcorder will only record in HD, with no option for Standard Def.
Can FCE4 convert HD footage so I can convert it as if SD and then transfer to DVD (rather than Bluray Disc).
    Many thanks
    Matt

You say that when you tried iDVD earlier you got jerky footage.
This sounds rather like the problem I discovered 18 months ago with my HDV camera.
Still shots were reck solid but any subject or camera movement (panning) resulted in unacceptable judder and shimmer.
There are 2 workarounds I eventually came across.
    1. Use your camera to down-convert to DV-PAL as you capture and edit it as DV. However, if your camera can't down-convert you will have to use method 2.
    2. Edit your AIC in the timeline. Then create a new DV-PAL (NTSC) Anamorphic sequence. Copy your edited HDV/AIC to the new sequence. Do not alter anything. Render the sequence ..... this will take a long time - up to twice the length of the project. Then File>Export>QuickTime Movie (Not Self-contained).
However, if you use the QT Movie in iDVD you will get a squashed 4:3 movie, so first of all you must make QT stretch it out to its proper 16:9 dimensions like this:-
    a. Open the exported movie file in the QT Pro player.
    b. Go to Window>Show Movie Properties.
    c. Select the "Video Track" and in the "Visual Settings" panel uncheck "Preserve Aspect Ratio".
    d. In the "Scaled Size" box set the width to 1024 pixels for PAL.
    e. The "Video Track" will have turned grey, so click it to make it blue again.
    f. The opened movie file will jump to 16:9.
    g. Close it with the red button and click Save.
If you haven't got QT Pro you may be able to export using QT Conversion to DV-PAL, changing the output size to 1024x576.

  • Standard Def on High Def TV

    Hello all
I work in standard def with the Sony DCR-SR80 (MPEG-2 format 16:9). I then convert in MPEG Streamclip. I use to export to DV format but more recently I'm exporting to "Apple DV/DVCPRO - NTSC" 720 x 480 (unscaled). My FCE Easy Set up is Format: DV/Panasonic DVCPRO Rate: 29.97 Use: DV-NTSC 32 khz Anamorphic. This is all nice because there really isn't any rendering going on. I film a lot of high school football so there is fast moving objects on the video.
My problem is that I create these projects and then burn them in iDVD and play them on my High Def Samsung TV (1080P) through my Blueray player (1080P) and the video has a jpeg look to it. I can make it better by adjusting my TV but I'm curious why it looks this way. Is it the camera? I nolonger have a tube television in the house so I can't compare. Any suggestions? whether a new camera or maybe new format and conversion settings. I tried to give as much detail as possible. I'm aware there are a lot of variables in there questions.
    Thank you all in advance!!
    Ween

    Hi(Bonjour)!
That's normal as your base material is MPEG converted to DVCPRO. MPEG compression artifacts are transcoded to DVCPRO upon conversion with MPEG streamclip. MPEG format doesn't render rapid action like football very well.
Worst, you play a standard def DVD in a HD set. The image (and the MPEG artifact)is upscaled 6 times to fit the HD screen.
By the way you should choose a 48 khz audio preset as it's a standard in video edition.

  • Uncompressed 8-bit standard def with anamorphic?

I read somewhere about using a sequence with uncompressed 8-bit standard def with anamorphic as an option for downcoverting from hdv. I'm using fcp5 and don't see that as an option - just uncompressed 8-bit without anamorphic.
Any solutions will be greatly appreciated.

Easiest way to get there (I think) is to copy the NTSC (or PAL) DV preset, then change the codec to uncompressed 8-bit. The anamorphic will be set and you'll be properly at 480 lines instead of 486.
That I think answers your question.
But you will then be faced with a sequence which requires rendering before viewing, and after most edits. Which is a lot of work in HDV.
Consider instead converting the media itself using Compressor. Don't let the name fool you - it can also save out as uncompressed. You can take an NTSC DV preset there as well, and edit it to be uncompressed 8-bit.

  • SCCM 2012 - Project 2010 Standard deployment failed with error 1603

    Hi everyone,
I’m in the progress to roll out a software deployment via SCCM 2012, it’s to remove the current Project 2010 Professional we installed and reinstall the Standard version. We got a task sequence for the job, which is Reboot>Un-install Project 2010 Pro>Reboot>Install
    Project 2010 Std.
    The Un-installation process uses this command: setup.exe /uninstall PrjPro /config "PrjPro.WW\uninstall.xml"
The Installation process uses this command: setup.exe /adminfile project_silent_install.MSP
But the deployment result is quite random, some of the PCs would succeed without any issue, some of them with fail at the installation process with 1708/1603 error. As far as I know we use standard Win 7 64bits SOE across the environment, so everyone should
    have same system baseline.
I reviewed some of the failed Project 2010 Standard installation logs as it shows the following:

    Thank you very much!!!

1603 means there is a fatal error during installation process.
Take a look at the article below. It may help on finding cause.

  • I need to output a PAL HDV project from FCP as a PAL DV file with 4 audio t

I need to output a PAL HDV project from FCP as a PAL DV file with 4 audio tracks - specifically one stereo pair to be t1&t3, the other stereo pair to be t2&t4. This is the standard way requested by an international distributor of tv programmes. I understand how to set the sequence in FCP to output 4 audio tracks - either 2 stereo pairs (1&2, + 3&4), or 4 discrete tracks. But how do I then output this as a QT file?
The manual tells me that to export multiple audio tracks, File>Export>QT Movie has it's Config pop-up menu in the Audio Settings area of the General tab of the Sequence Settings. Well, that's set for 4 discrete channels, but the QT export settings only allow for 2 mono or 1 stereo output, and that's what I get when I try it. What it says in the manual just doesn't happen.
Exporting via Compressor, on the other hand, has an abundance of choices of 4-track outputs, none of which are labelled as anything resembling 'discrete'. Would any of those 4.0 settings suffice? Or am I likely to get myself into difficulties further down the line? As I am monitoring for this task on a 2-track audio system, I cannot confirm exactly what I am getting when I use any of those settings.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    John

Call me naive, but I've not heard of splitting the stereo pairs like this before.
What broadcaster? (perhaps one of our EU regulars will drop in...)
You can do all sorts of pairing but it is coincident tracks pairing- eg 1/2 + 3/4
    Sorry I can't offer anything.

  • Advice on exporting PPCS3 HDV Project to file for WD TV player

I would like to maintain HD quality through the Export process to create a file that will be played on a Western Digital TV HD Media Player.  I have tried a multiple of export settings without success.  My goal is to play back using the WD TV player with the file stored on a USB drive...file size is not an issue.
I capture the HDV footage from a Canon HV30 camcorder into PremProCS3
I use the Project Settings preset = HDV, HDV 1080i30 (60i)
I have stabbed around with Export, Movie... as well as with the Adobe Media Encoder and can't find the magic
When I capture/edit in iMovie09 on a MacBookPro, I can easily export to a .m4v which plays back in great HD quality on my 46" TV via the WD TV player.  But I can't seem to find the right preset or custom setting within Premiere Pro to get the job done.  I greatly prefer the PP editing environment and want to stick with it.
The attached jpg file is a scan from the WD TV User Manual...supported video formats.
    Thanks, in advance.

Hey, I'm glad I found you guys.  This problem has been messing up my workflow for over a year.  Maybe you can help:
I'm shooting HDV with Sony HD1000, capturing with HDV split, editing in Premiere.  (So far, so good)  Problem is, exporting from premiere (HDV 60i project) produces "squashed" and letter-boxed video, and my graphics and titles are "mis-aligned" with the video.  It's like premiere scales down my video files, letter-boxes them, but leaves graphics untouched, which of course throws everything off.  My only work around is to edit in an NTSC project, and scale down every single video clip myself, which yields lots of rendering.  I thought I solved the problem, by importing the entire premiere project into after effects.  Export worked great, no loss of quality, but after effects doesn't recognize premiere time-remapping, titles or wipe transitions (and has issues with .m2t audio)!
I've tried every form of exporting from an hdv project  (adobe media encoder, straight to encore).  ALWAYS squashes and letter-boxes the video files, while leaving the graphics/titles as is (now appearing larger than they did in the program monitor and less crisp.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I love premiere for standard dv, I just can't get around this obstacle with HDV...

How to hookup a digital boc, Cisco 150N, to a standard def. TV

jjg111 wrote: How to hookup a digital boc, Cisco150N, to a standard def. TVIf the box doesn't have an RF out jack, use the Component or Composite video jacks along with left and right audio. If the TV doesn't have inputs for those, you'll need something that can convert the signals to channel 3 analog, like maybe an old VCR. Or change out the box for one that has an RF out connector. Or replace the TV.

  • Apple TV to Standard Def

    Hey gang,
My workout room's got an old tv with standard def (Red, White, Yellow) and cable ports in the back and that's it. How do I hook the current gen ATV my wife just got me to that TV and have it look goodish?

There are hardware converters that will convert HDMI to various other types of output, however there are some issues with doing so that you should be aware of.
    HDCP
HDCP compliant converters will not allow you to watch HDCP protected content such as that from the iTunes Store. Non compliant converters exist but we cannot discuss them under the Terms of Use for these communities.
    Resolution and aspect ratio
I'm not aware of any converters that will scale the output from the Apple TV, any TV or projector which is used will need to be widescreen and support resolutions of 720p

  • HT3209 high def vs standard def

Just purchased a tv series in high def and it looks like it will take 11h per episode to download.  Would standard def be much faster, and would it be likely that the folks at the itunes store would change this for me?

You will need to rencode the video to SD. (Use a 16:9 setting and then set the track to 16:9 letterbox and not pan & scan or pan & scan/letterbox)
Some menu assets may work backwards (you need to start a new project) but chances are you need to redo the menu

  • Best application for Standard Def DVD creation?

I have a bunch of MiniDV tapes shot in standard def that I want to make into DVDs for my family. I want to preserve as much picture quality as possible during the process and will be using transitions, overlays, and credits.
I have used iMovie 08 and abandoned it because I needed dynamic chapter markers. I am now ready to edit the next DVD in the 'series', and with the advent of iMovie 09 and the availability of Final Cut Express at a reasonable price, I am trying to decide which way to go. I also have a copy of iMovie HD 6 which I used for my previous DVD.
From reading the reviews of iMovie 09 I am pretty confident that I would be happy with it functionally, but not if it costs me in picture quality. I noticed on my first effort using iMovie HD 6 and iDVD, that the DVD picture was not as sharp as the video viewed directly from the camera. Did I do something wrong, or is that a "feature" of iMovie? Would FCE be better?
My only concern with FCE apart from spending money that I may not need to spend, is the talk of a steep learning curve. With two little kids at home I don't have a lot of spare time. That said, I'd rather spend the time and get a sharp looking DVD than get a mediocre one quickly.
    Thanks for any advice.

    skalicki` wrote:
What do you mean by "dynamic chapter markers"?
I meant the ability to define the precise location of the chapter within the movie, such that when exported to iDVD the menu allows you to jump to any point you have defined in the movie. By "dynamic" I mean they may be placed at random locations, rather than fixed intervals. iMovie 08 deleted the ability to add chapter markers, iDVD allows only fixed interval chapters (which seems useless to me), as does Toast. I tried the work-around of using Garage Band, but it fails on larger projects. I've read that iMovie 09 has restored the ability to add chapter markers where you want, but if I'm going to shell out more cash I might as well get the package that will get me the best picture too (within reason).
In any video application, for Chapter markers you simply place them in the application, then edit them in iDVD, DVD Studio Pro, etc.
Not in iMovie 08/iDVD, but now that you mention it, how does DVD Studio Pro compare to iDVD? I'm mostly focused on picture quality.
Do you mean better animated titles that you could use within the program? For this FCE is much better, because you don't need to work with the premade things, you can create and animate your own from the ground up.
That will be fun. Not what I was talking about, but a nice feature. I know that FCE will have lots of capability that iMovie doesn't (by design), that's just gravy.
I have used iMovie HD 6 to place chapters where I wanted them in my last DVD project, I didn't have much trouble working with it although it is a bit more "professional grade" than iMovie (I know, not saying much). How do the two compare for learning curve/user friendliness? I would like to say that I'd get a book to read on FCE but the truth is that on an average day I don't have time to watch the news let alone read a book.
In my opinion, FCE is definitely worth the investment and once you learn it you will never want to go back to iMovie!
Thanks, just the fact that the output is higher quality is a big pull for me. I think I'm going to take the plunge.
Now for the next question: FCE 4 or 3.5?
