Converting Images to B&W Automatically when Shooting Tethered

I'm cool with setting up my camera to shoot tethered into Lightroom. No problem there. What I would like to know is if it is possible to automatically convert the JPEG files into grayscale upon transfer into Lightroom without having to press any further buttons to do so, ie. aoutomatically transfer images from camera to Lightroom in color, then convert to grayscale without any further action on my part. I know on "Import", this is no problem as a Preset can be used. But, there doesn't seem to be the ability to use a preset when shooting tethered that I am aware of.
I know I can set the camera to shoot grayscale and that would be one way to solve the problem. Ideally, though, I would like the images to come into lightroom as color and then convert to maintain color options later.
Thanks for your help!

In the menu command File > Auto Import > Auto Import Settings, you can select a Develop preset. Just choose one that converts to black and white.
Edit - but re-reading your question, no. You would have to export the files to get b&w jpegs. Maybe I did understand first time!

  • When shooting tethered in Lightroom, my tech is editing previous shot images ....

When shooting tethered in Lightroom, my tech is editing previous shot images, but when I shoot another image, that image pops up instead. is there a way to stop the last shot image automatically pop up, so my tech can continue working on the last image?
    thanks!

Have the tech move the photo upon which they are working into the Quick Collection [ B ]. As long as he is in the QC, the photo won't advance while you continue to shoot.

  • Things Missing from Lightroom when shooting tethered

ave previously been using Leaf and Capture One, now we are converting to LR b/c of its features. But there are a few small things that I noticed are missing that should be easy to fix. First the compare window. When shooting tethered in Capture One you can pick a compare variant and it stay's up on the left and all the new captures show up on the right. I have tried the survey option in LR but when you make a capture or use the crop tool you're compare view goes away. This would be very helpful in my situation because we shoot high volume and the shots need to be as similar as possible.  Also something as simple as the grid, there are workaround's but annoying ones. Please just ad a grid button,so you can turn it on and leave it on, along with movable guide lines, these are the only little features that Capture One has and LR does not.

I would like to add my support for extra functions when shooting tethered - either via auto import or directly through LR.
One thing that would be really useful is an overlay function, just like all the medium format capture software has. An art director will often supply a pdf layout of a magazine cover with title, cover lines etc and this is overlaid on the image during the shoot to get everything in the right spot. I've tried doing this with a custom template in the print module of LR with limited success.
Also, a way to send a keyboard command to another app running in the background to initiate a capture via the camera's capture software would be great. This is primarily for cameras or digital backs that aren't supported directly through LR via tethered capture.
Another biggie would be to have a 'same as previous' develop preset (just like the medium format capture software, which does this by default) for auto imports, so that any changes made to the last-captured image will automatically be applied to any new captures. I know there is a way to option click the 'previous' button in the develop module and then hit enter to do this, but if this takes a few keystrokes, and if 'same as previous' is there in tethered capture it is obviously recognised as something useful so can we have it in auto import please!

  • Camera battery drain when shooting tethered to LR3.x

    Hi:
I've been experiencing very rapid battery drain in my Nikon D90 when shooting tethered into a laptop running LR3.x under Windows7 32-bit. Is this to be expected because of the constant transfer of images across the USB connection?
Thanks in advance for any insight on this.
    Regards,
    Peter

Even transfering via USB for downloading will cause the battery to drain. Tethering would certainly drain the battery more than shooting non tethered, but it shouldn't feel excessive.

  • Turn off the Auto adjust when shooting tethered in aperture

is there any way to turn off the auto adjust feature in aperture? When I shoot tethered it over corrects and ruins all the shots, then I have to adjust back for the client to get a good idea of the image.

After the disaster of iTunes 11.1 that deleted nearly all my archived podcasts (recovered from backup thankfullly) I was shocked, but not altogether surprised, to see that the option to delete played episodes has been enabled/re-enabled by default.
From the lower right of the Podcasts window click Settings then, if needed, click Defaults, then turn Delete Played Episodes to Off.
Why set the destructive option as the default?
I have many episodes that I want to keep that are no longer available at their feed so the last thing I want is any automatic delete process to be enabled.

  • Automatically convert images to RGB Colour Profile when opened in Photoshop...

    Hi there,
I have just moved over to Photoshop CS6 from Elements 10. One thing I can't work out how to do is to have PS automatically convert opened files to RGB, exactly like PSE does. Is this possible?
    Many Thanks

Basically the only way to convert them is by manually changing the colour profile?
    To my knowledge, yes.
I'm sure you can write a script that will do that automatically, but I don't script. You can post in the PS scripting forum. Bright and helpful people there. I'm sure someone there can set you up and walk you through how to install "a convert CMYK to working RGB upon open" script.

  • Will aperture auto advance to display each new image when shooting tethered?

I've tethered successfully with the Canon 6D using either Lightroom or Aperture. When using Lightroom, it will automatically load the new image for display on my external monitor. I cannot find a way to have the same result with Aperture and I would much prefer to use Aperture so the images can be imported directly into the Aperture library. Am I missing something or is this not possible? I like to work from the camera, not sitting at the computer.

    Short answer: Yes.
When you initiaite a thethered session, there is a checkbox in the tether HUD that turns auto-advance on or off. The default is on.
If you have tried it and it doesn't work, what are the symptoms?

  • How to keep a copy of the image file on memory card when using tethered shooting with a Nikon D800?

I love tethered Shooting but as default (at least for Nikon) Lightroom does only save the file on the computer, not on the memory card.
Now I want to have a backup of the image file on the memory card additionally to downloading it. The tethering software digiCamControl can do this with my camera, so it is technically possible.
So how can I achieve this using Lightroom tethering?

Thanks. FWIW I'm very keen on improving tethering and lobbied Adobe endlessly until they added the overlay for shooting into layouts because it was a major reason why some of my clients were unable to switch to Lightroom from PhaseOne. But we have to be realistic and remember that tethering just isn't a key market for Adobe as it is for PhaseOne, so progress is painfully slow. For example, where is live view or setting exposure which are in PhaseOne? I'd be amazed if we get those features for a few versions, and that's why I point serious tethered shooters to other solutions. And realistically, assuming your understanding of the SDK is correct you shouldn't expect a change until the next full version of Lightroom.  Good if it happens, but I wouldn't bet on it.

  • Image format not working automatically when linking to Frame files

I have a project in RoboHelp that has linked Frame files. I've fiddled with the settings until I can update and publish without having to make any changes to most of the RoboHelp project's files. However, there is a problem with the images. My group's standard is to center the images. All the settings are set for that. However, they are left-aligned in the generated CHM file, unless I double click one image in each topic to open the Image Properties box, make NO changes, and click OK to close the Image Properties box. I've checked the HTML code before and after doing this, and there is no change, but then all the images in each topic that I did this to will appear centered in the generated CHM file. Since I have about 100+ graphics in this project, it would be nice if I could get the settings to take effect without having to go through this exercise. Anyone know how to make RoboHelp recognize the settings without having to touch an image in each topic in the project?

Sure, here is the HTML code for one of the images. All the images I've checked, working or not, have identical code except of course the reference to the image file.
    <div style="text-align: center;">
    <img alt="SSI_User_Manual_Chapter0200004.png" id="image4" src="SSI_User_Manual_Chapter0200004.png"
       style="margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;"
       width="494" height="331" border="0" />
    </div>
I searched the CSS and do not find duplicate entries. Perhaps the <div style="text-align: center;"> is a problem? I believe that RH is adding that because the graphics were centered in FrameMaker. It is not in my CSS.

  • 40% of images missing when shooting tethered

I'm testing LR3 as a possible alternative to C1, and I like what I see so far.  However, there is one big problem.
We're shooting with a 5d Mk2, and used LR3.  After waiting a while for a low-pressure shoot to test LR3 with, we got it running and tethered the camera.  All was good at this point, but during the shoot there seemed to be less frames coming in than were shot.
At the end of the shoot the connection dropped, so we shot the last 30 frames to card.  I decided to check the whole shoot by uploading all cards into a seperate folder from the tethered folder - turns out there were 230 more frames in the card folder than in the tether folder.  And it's definietly frames - not sidecars or anything else that's giving me the discrepancy.
Has anyone else come across this?  I'm making a call on LR3 vs C1v5, and right now LR3 is my choice bar this huge issue.
    Any thoughts?

Thanks Sean - appreciate the words of wisdom.  There's a pretty good chance I wasn't paying attention to the tether pop-up while shooting, so the cable may have come loose.  That said, it must be happening a lot and in small sections, because it's a few frames every now and then that are missing.
Definietly gives me option #1 to troubleshoot.
    Cheers,
    Kev

  • Auto Rotate problems when shooting tethered overhead

I am shooting with a Canon 5d mark 2.  When I shoot product into the auto rotate works properly and the image appears rotated properly. Although when I shoot overhead or down on product it seems to get confused. If I rotate the camera twords the horizon and fire it figures out which way it should be the I can reframe my overhead shot.  But if the camera is moved at all it will show up rotated the wrong way and I have to slightly move the camera away from its directly overhead framing again so it can figure out wich way it should be rotating. I have tried all three rotate modes with the camera with similar inconsitant results. What is the best setting on the camera to get consistant results. Or ii I turn auto rotate off is there a way to tell lightrroom to rotate it properly on import like it does for all other settings like white balance.

This isn't a function of tethering, I wouldn't think. Many cameras have a sensor that determines the orientation of images so auto-rotate works. The problem is that these sensors generally only work along one axis, using the force of gravity to tell them where down is. When you orient the camera such that the lens is pointing down most sensors no longer are able to determine whether you are in portrait or landscape, because there is no down -- it ends up being somewhat random.
I've seen this on many different cameras, and all without tethering. It has to do when the sensor is read when composing the short.
Your best bet is to set the camera to ignore the sensor when taking pics like this, and rotate the image by hand that are need to be in portrait. If there is no rotation in the image metadata, Lr will not rotate it. It will have to be done by hand. It won't be that hard to select a number of images and bulk rotate them.

  • Aperture freezing up when shooting Tethered

    Hi
I was shooting a job for a client yesterday with a Canon 1DS MkII and doing so tethered to my Macbook Pro. Everything was working fine but on 3 occasions during the shoot, Aperture froze up.
I had to "Force Quit" and restart the App but then it did not recognize the camera. The only way to go was to reboot the machine. and then it worked but having to reboot 3 times in one afternoon session with a client was e embarrassing.
Does the camera / laptop buffer cause the machine to seize up? Am I missing something? Should I be shooting slower or not writing files in a quick succession.
I really like the tether option and so do my clients. Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks n advance

  • Sharpening when shooting jpeg with iphone 4S

    hi !
Is the iphone 4S applying sharpening automatically when shooting a JPEG image ?
If it's the case, no need to add some sharpening in a third party program like Camera Raw or Aperture / Lightroom ?
    Thank you very much !

I'm sorry you're having this issue.
If you are within one year of the purchase date of your iPhone 4s, and believe this may be a hardware issue, you can contact Apple Support for free without purchasing the extended warranty from Apple. Part of the process will be to remotely perform diagnostics on the phone, and the representative on the other side will be able to tell if there is anything wrong with the phone hardware.
As it turns out, I'm unable to diagnose your issue from here, but I found this discussion that may help: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4328959?start=0&tstart=0. It is on the iPhone 5, but the information is most likely transferable.

  • Make file backups while shooting tethered

I agree with others who have posted that LR needs to add the option of copying files to an external drive whens shooting tethered.
I use NIkon and the camera does not keep a copy in the camera when shooting tethered in LR.
Just makes so much obvious sense for LR to have a save as a copy option as files are brought in during tethered shooting. Why hasn't Adobe implemented this? It's been requested since LR 3, I believe.

Do you have Aperture installed? I found your model on a compatibility list; however, there was a note that it requires Aperture 2 to be installed:
    http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html
    According to this excerpt:
To see a list of digital cameras with RAW-format support that are compatible with iPhoto, visit this Aperture webpage (any camera compatible with Aperture, Apple’s advanced photo editing and management program, is compatible with iPhoto as well)
which is at the bottom of this page:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iPhoto/9.0/en/pht41627265.html
I may be wrong, but I interpret that info to mean you need Aperture 2 before iPhoto will work with RAW?
