Converting iMovie DV file to MPEG2

Hi folks,
When I import video from my Sony MiniDV Camcorder to iMovie, it saves the file as "DV". How can I convert it to MPEG2?
Thanks pmonnerat

I thought it was only MPEG2.
Choice usually depends on use. Elementary streams (M2V video file referencing an AIFF audio file) used to be a standard intermediate video editor export format allowing the user to burn either PCM or AC3 5.1 audio DVDs. Multiplexed MPEG2/MP2 files in an MPEG container are commonly used high quality distribution/delivery of files destined for playback on a computer and are often used for cross platform exchanges. The only problem here would normally be a failure in the PC/Windows side to properly terminate files and avoid timecode breaks -- both of which are items required for correct QT playback -- but should have no problem going from a Mac to a PC. (QT playback also requires the QT MPEG-2 Playback component be installed for Mac use which then becomes a supported "playback only" format as far as the Mac is concerned.) MPEG2/AC3 files are not "natively" supported by QT but in the form of MPEG, VOB, or TS files can be played on a mac using multimedia players such as VLC (which, like the DVD player, allows AC3 "pass through" to an external decoder) or MPEG Streamclip (which does not support any "pass through").
Anyway, based on what you wrote next I understood that, among others, I can use FfmpegX to do the conversion. Am I right?
FFmpegX will create multiplexed MPEG files but will not create VIDEO_TS folders with BFO, IFO, and VOB files/images suitable for direct burning to DVD for playback on a commercial DVD player like iDVD or Toast.
Would MPEG Stream Clip also convert?
No, it cannot create MPEG-2 content. MPEG Streamclip will only convert between multiplexed MPEG variants, demultiplex them, or convert from mutiplexed variants to other compression formats compatible with QT as augmented by your installed collection of QT components.

  • How do I convert unreadable dvd files to iMovie?

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I cannot find anything relevant in a search.  I burned a DVD from a VHS tape.  Now I'd like to convert it to iMovie so that I can upload a segment onto my iPhone.  QuickTime won't recognize the format or even attempt to open it, nor will iMovie.  Are there any good options for me?

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:

  • How do I convert iMovie 9.x files in iMovie 11?

A while back I upgraded to iMovie 10 and when I opened it it asked me to convert and upgrade my projects.  I chose to do so but it ran into an error after about the 10th project in my list of 15 projects.  So I created a folder called oldimovieprojectfolders and moved all iMovie Project files into it, except the first one I could see that iMovie was able to convert when processing.
Sure enough it worked and finished converting my one project and Im able to see it in my iMovie 11 now.
The problem is that now I need other projects converted.  So when I open iMovie 11 and choose Update Projects and Events, it doesnt find any of the old projects even after I took the one I wish to convert today and moved it from the oldimoviesprojectsfolder to the iMovie Projects folder.
How can I make iMovie recognize that old project in iMovie Project folder?

If you look into your iMovie projects and events folder you will find that iMovie version10 (it is version 10, iMovie '11 = imove v.9) has added an empty file named something like "updated to imovie  ....." in order that it doesn't update the same projects twice.
If you trash this folder in both the projects and events folders, iMovie 10 will be able to update them.  Of course you need to temporarily hide the projects and events which you have already successfully updated.
You probably have a single project or event which is causing the problem so I would advise updating just one project at a time.  You will get a new library for each in iMovie 10 but you can sort this out afterwards.
    Geoff.

Not sure about the codec- Wondershare asked where I was sending to in setup and I selected imovie. It did the rest. I have been successful with editing on storyboard, but imovie (09) quits when I attempt to view project full screen, or prepare the movie for sharing. I have removed some files (to ensure headroom), and have installed most recent updates.

BTW I tried using doferent setings in compressor from CBR and VBR I even pushed up the setings to 8 or 9 BR and still no luck !
does anyone have any idea ?
    Thanks in advence ...

Let's focus attention on just the Sony. (What model and what resolution are you shooting?)
    For now, I'll assume you're shooting 1080i.
Take a representaive clip  into a new sequence. Add a title.
In your sequence, make sure field dominance is set to Upper.
Set render settings to Pro Res 422.
After rendering, export QT self contained.
Import into Compressor (I'm now referring to v3.5).
Select the 90 minute Best quality DVD preset.
Open frame controls and turn on (click the gear icon). Set Resize filter to Best.
Submit burn and check quality on TV.
    Good luck.

  • What are people using to convert .3gp video files into something compatible with iMovie? Does Apple have SW to do this?

I am trying to find the best and safest way to convert .3gp video from my Blackberry into a file format that iMovie will recognize.  I see lots of potential downloads, but I am hoping for some recommendations on which SW is most helpful.  Thanks.

There is a free App called MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5. You can drag your .3gp into MPEG Streamclip. Then FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME.
For HD sizes (1280x720 or 1920x1080), choose Apple Intermediate Codec as the Video Codec.
For smaller sizes, you can also use Apple Intermediate Codec, but h.264 will also work and will give a smaller file size.
Then import this new file into iMovie using FILE/IMPORT MOVIES

  • Mpeg2 files converted to DV files..how do I "share" with iDVD for burning?

Newbie question here...thanks for all the great info I have found here already...but need some more. I'm using an iMac with OS X 10.4.7, QT Pro, downloaded MPEG StreamClip, and purchased MPEG Playback as suggested on this board.
    Here's the situation:
I have analog Hi8 Sony camcorder (CCD-TRV98) with NO USB, firewire, etc. connection...just good ol' SVideo. Was able to "capture" old home movies using analog to digital coverter through my Windows Desktop. Saved files in mpeg formats and avi formats on external hard drive.
Plugged external hard drive via firewire port on iMac. I can play the movie files in Streamclip and can "convert" to DV files...and I can import them into iMovie fine....but when I try then "share" with iDVD the program encodes for literally hours....i finally gave up for a tiny movie after 2 hours of "encoding"....think this is a problem with my rookie status of using iMovie, or are my files a problem? Does the fact that I'm saving the files off a Desktop and using on Mac matter? If I'm converting the files to DV in Mac, would the Desktop influence even matter? (Are you rolling your eyes at me yet? R-O-O-K-I-E here and I know it, but hey I'm trying!
Hope I have explained my situation well...if not let me know what I left out. I could really use the help...I have 30+ Hi8 movies that I want to burn to DVD for family and archiving purposes.
    Thanks,
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)
iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   iDVD,

the combo Streamclip + Apple plug-in is the most recommended here...
yepp, iMovie "prefers" dv only... relying on the QTengine, it can import some other formats/codecs... as mpeg4, you could be lucky, to make it accept an .avi container with the right codec inside...
.avi is a PC media container, as .mov in the Apple world: just a "wrapper", containing maning codecs, formats, standards, not-so-standards...
so, if your Windows app allows export as ".avi, codec dv", it should work... there's no 100% gurantee with that PCMac swapping....
how can I get iMovie to "share" with iDVD for burning? iDVD will not open the movie made in iMovie....?
now that a new - and surprising! - topic...
you have some options, how to share to iDVD:
    * inside iM there's a iDVD button under the pane... (I don't own iM6...)
    * you should safe your project into the Movies folder, then launch iDVD, create new project, in the media bin/movie you should find your movie...
    * create new iDVDproject and drag'n drop project from Finder/Movies into iDVD window....
I asked you, to tell us your free disk space on internal drive... see my last post... please tell us... , a 2min project should be rendered in a few minutes...
did you read the turtorials before using the iApps?
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials
coming from the PC world, some workflows differ..
we MacUser say: are easier to accomplish.. ;-))
    Plan B)
... in case, you own a miniDV camcorder, playout files from PC to tape, then import as usual into iM/iDVD... digital copies, no loss in quality..
    good luck
thanks for usage of forum's marker feature ...!

  • Media encoder inserts black frame at beginning, when converting my MOV file to H264 for YouTube 720pHD

I'm using Adobe Media Encoder to convert my MOV file to H264, and selecting "YouTube 720pHD" (for Instagram) as I was instructed by someone at Adobe over the phone. But it inserts a black frame at the beginning or end. When I open the converted file on my desktop, the black frame is the first frame. After I upload to Instagram, the black frame is at the end. How can I get rid of the black frame?! Please help!

    Welcome to the furum, Forrest.
Hmmm. I don't recall hearing of that problem. There may not be many users who can offer a solution.
This workaround should work, however: Open the exported movie in QuickTime Player and remove the first frame. (I think it's only the first frame that is black, not the first second. Remove all the black, whatever it is.) Save the movie. That may cause QT Player to save it into a new movie. Use the modified movie for your Web site. QuickTime Pro is required — $30 from Apple.
Note that you've posted in the iMovie 6 forum, not the iMovie HD forum for iMovie 5. There are fewer current iMovie 5 users here. Most were iM5 users, however, so someone might remember this problem.

  • IMovie 10.0.8 does not open older iMovie .rcproject files

I have tried to "Update Projects and Events" and also tried to "Import Media", but remain unable to open projects in iMovie 10.0.8 with file extension .rcproject that were created with iMovie 9.0 and identified as "iMovie Project" files in the Finder. They are dimmed whenever I try to use iMovie 10.0.8 to open them.
In the process of trying to move back to iMovie 9.0, I can open iMovie 9.0 and while the projects appear on the list of Projects, they are not apparently incomplete and "Source clip is missing" message appears where the viewing screen should show the video. They will not play in 9.0, and therefore no editing is possible.
Did I read that once "converted" to iMovie 10.0.8 that files would no longer be recognizable by the older iMovie?
I have numerous projects created with iMovie 9 that seem to be somewhere in limbo:
Neither iMovie 9.0 nor 10.0.8 will open them.

Thank you GeeD. I'm still stymied.
I have moved the Event and Project Folders to the "top-layer of the drive" as the instructions state, right alongside the System Folder, Users Folder and Applications Folders.
When I open iMovie 10.0.8, the Events and Projects Folders are empty:
When I select File/Update Projects and Events, I get an alert box that says iMovie couldn't find any:
Not knowing exactly what is meant by the "top layer" in the instructions, I moved the Events and Project folders back inside the "Movies" folder where I found them (but then not where I would call the "top" layer, but rather "iMac/Users/Home/Movies/iMovieProjects". Then I tried to "Update Projects and Events" and received the same alert: "iMovie could not find any projects or events to update."
    Then I tried to update iMovie 9.0 (iMovie '11 version 9.0 (1073)) to version 9.0.9 .
[As an aside, the nomenclature of iMovie drives me nuts. The latest version is 10.0.8, which us newer than iMovie '11.]
Back to the update of version 9.0 to 9.0.9.
Presumably because I have version 10.0.8 installed, I got this alert box:
So, I cannot update version 9.0
and I cannot "Update" the Events and Projects created in version 9.0.

  • Will Quicktime Pro convert/compress .dv files to Quicktime?

I have .dv movies that are taking up so much space on my hard-drive. I purchased Quicktime Pro to compress those files so they will take up less space. I don't see in the tutorial how to do this. Could someone please point me in the right direction so I can see how to do this? Thanks!

Will Quicktime Pro convert/compress .dv files to Quicktime?
    Of course.
I don't see in the tutorial how to do this. Could someone please point me in the right direction so I can see how to do this?
This is impossible to do until you define what you mean by "QuickTime."
Basically, a "QuickTime" (MOV) file is any form of dat that can be placed in an MOV file container -- not a compression format in and of itself. Therefore, your first step is to determine what you really want to do here. For instance, a DV (.dv) stream file normally consists of an audio DV compressed track along with a video DV compressed track. DV(25) files normally contain audio and video tracks having a data rate on the order of 28.5 Mbps each (or about a 57 Mbps total average data rate). As you indicated, these do make for rather large files. You could, of course, reduce the total data rate by nearly half if you merge the original video track with AIFF (linear PCM) converted audio (or even smaller if you use an AAC audio track). The catch here is that QT Pro does not have a DV "pass thorough" video option which allows you to simply convert the audio while retaining the original DV video. So unless you are willing to manually convert the audio track and then manually replace the original Audio track with your converted audio, you would normally have to convert both audio and video to another compression format.
In this latter case, you could select any valid codec supported by QT as augmented by installed components. Typical possibilities would be AIC/AIFF, unlimited H.264/AAC, Motion-JPEG/AIFF Photo-JPEG/AIFF, supported MPEG4/AAC or H.264/AAC profiles with limited data rates. These compression options are all compatible with iMovie '08 editing and represent a full range of possible data rates (which in turn determine your final file size). For instance, an AIC/AIFF file would normally end up with a total data rate on the order of 20-22 Mbps with an unlimited H.264/AAC about 16-18 Mbps, M-JPEG 10 Mbps, Photo-JPEG 8-9 Mbps, and MPEG4/AAC or H.264 as low as you can stand the loss in quality and still retain a video track.
These various compression formats basically represent a compromise between file size and quality with the quoted data rates being typical for SD content with an "average" quality setting. While actual data rates are always dependent on the actual file converted, the stated averages should provide some idea as to what you could expect in comparison to your original source file -- i.e., the AIC/AIFF file would be expected to be about 62-65% the size of your DV file, unlimited H.264/AAC 28-31%, M-JPEG/AIFF 17-18%, Photo-JPEG 14-15%, and MPEG4/AAC or H.264/AAC in the 3-5% range with "reasonable" quality levels.
Since each codec has somewhat different characteristics and user options, I will not go into specifics for each here. What I would recommend at this point is for you to select a short file with typical content and convert it wising the various codecs and determine what compromise in file size and quality you can live with at the display size you plan to use. This in turn will likely depend to some extent on what you plan to do with the final file. For the archiving of files for later use/editin, you like want files to retain as much quality as possible which, in turn, usually implies large file sizes. On the other hand, distribution files can be much more highly compressed as a "finished" product which you don't intend to re-compress or edit further. Remember, when you compress a file more compact format you are literally "throwing away" data so you should be most judicious in selecting that appropriate format to which to compress your files for the saving of file space.
