Converting imovie to a still photo

Is it possible to take a still frame from imovie and convert it to a photo somehow? Id like to be able to take a particular frame from a movie event, edit it and save it as a photo, if possible in iphoto?

See this user tip by AppleMan1958 here:

Note that this applies to iMovie '09, the forum in which you have posted. Unfortunately, iMovie '11 (which is version 9) does not have this feature. If you are in fact using iMovie '11 please post back for further information, as a good workaround is available.

  • IMovie with only still photos - huge projection

I am creating an iMovie with nothing but still photographs which will be projected with good equipment for a full school gathering, meaning a pretty large to very large screen - my only experience has been DVD's for regular TV's.
My question is to get the best quality, what is the best format for photos - I did see someone said to take them into iPhoto(?) covert them to TIFF then save them to JPEG/RGB, I retouch all of these in Photoshop and will likely do my resizing and formats there...
So any thoughts on resolution and size? Should it fit a tv ratio? I foget what that is, but it would be nice to see explained by pixel dimensions!
I am a bit confused about the iPhoto or iDVD difference? My other problem is burning the dvd's now - my 17" took a dive and this iBook does not have a superdrive - do the older Lacie's work with DVD's... I am doubting so.
This will be a sorry excuse to break down and buy an intel, I am going through PowerBooks like candy
    Thanks tons!

overall pixel size: 740x480 at 72dpi is the smallest size I would personally ever go with. The internal mike in a quiet room (like late at night with the refrigerator and the phone unplugged) is something that I have done under emergency conditions. If you are experimenting you have:
iMovie ... which I have difficulties recording with ... for me it quits too soon...maybe I'm not being loud enough..maybe my movies are too long and I'm running out of ram. I don't know.
QuickTime Pro works pretty good to record sound using your computer's internal mike
Garageband does a pretty good job of processing the voice by way of recording through the internal mike. That's what I've been using nowadays because it sounds so much better than iMovie or QTPro. Then you export it to iTunes then import it into iMovie. Real easy. It's a snap to do. Since you are wanting to record a cassette tape, I'd try all three ways to see if they do the job. If so, good. If not there are other kinds of ways to capture the sound. But then you go to the Garageband threads and see what's what there. One way or another, you'll get it. Maybe not instantly, but you will get it.
Again it's all experimental and how professional you want to be. Recording from you computer is not at all going to give a professional result. Especially of a cassette tape, because it can pick up the sound of the machine playing the tape. But, if you want to make a memory movie, it barely makes do. Making do isn't always the best way to go. But might be the only way you can go because of other limitations...of which I have plenty.
You really, really need to experiment to see how it looks...how it sounds. What works. What does not work. Especially with sound can be a stickler. A plague of a problem even. Even so, I made something not too long ago that I recorded via the computer's internal mike and tried it first in the bathroom...WAY too much sound bouncing off the walls there. The living room was picking up who knows what. But I went into the bedroom and it worked kind of okay in there. But it still didn't sound at all in the least bit professional. Even so, it did work for that particular project. In a quirky weird kind of way that I MADE it work.

  • IMovie 11 and still photos

I'm having an issue importing photos into a video I'm producing. When I bring them in, they do not show up upon playback; all I get is a blank screen. I've inserted other stills into this video earlier in the process but now it's not "accepting" any others.

They're JPEGs. And this question led me to a discovery:
The photos from my iPhone work without an issue but the photos that were supplied to me by an outside source are inconsistent. At first I thought it was a size thing as my iPhone photos were between 1.1 and 1.4 MB while the other-source photos ranged from 33 KB to 100 KB, but that turned out not to be the case as the 33 KB photo and the 100 KB photo didn't work but the 92 KB and 95 KB did work.
    What am I missing?!

  • Still Photos in iMovie

This may have been asked by another user in the past, but I can't see one at this time. Anyway, I was making a "movie" in iMovie using some still photos mixed in with some video. At any rate, the still photos when viewed in iMovie have jagged edges along straight lines which ruins the quality of the photo. I have tried several procedures to try and resolve this issue, but to no avail. When building a slide show in iPhoto, these same pictures are crystal clear. I have even taken these iPhoto slideshows and exported to quicktime and copied and pasted these into exported iMovie movies, but that seems like too many steps. Besides, since iMovie allows pictures to be imported, I would hope that they should still remain high quality.
Thanks for all your help in advance!

    hi Tully:

command-shift-3 will create a .png file on your desktop of your screen. You can also do command-shift 4 and crop the image.

  • Still photos imported to imovie change to solid green

i'm using all the newest versions of iLife and Aperture (as of 11/13/13)... i use iMovie to make slideshows from my photography because i like the controls better than in Aperture or iPhoto... however, since upgrading to Mavericks and all of the new iWorks, iLife, Aperture on my Fall 2011 MBA, when i import still photos into iMovie to make a slideshow, they have a propensity to be rendered, at least in previews, as solid green images (think green screen)... i'm using jpeg images that have been exported to a separate file from my Aperture library, all using RGB color... there seems to be no rhyme or reason to which ones render incorrectly and which do not... sometimes the thumbnail image appears as the solid green, most of the time, though, it will appear as a standard thumbnail image, but show up green on the preview screen. I have not tried actually exporting the project as a quicktime movie to see what happens. I have tried closing and reopening imove after import, but that seems to make no difference.  if i delete the files and reimport, sometimes they will import correctly, but often they do not.
My iMovie files, as well as the exported jpg's are all located on my internal SSD. Is anyone else having this kind of thing happen?

I have been having the same problem with iMovie and the iPhoto library, where the imported pictures turn to solid green.
What I tried was to convert the photos to a video fileand import into iMovie - this is what I did:
    - I opened up iPhoto and created a slideshow with the picture (or pictures) to be added to the iMovie project.
    - Then I exported the slideshow to the desktop (or wherever you want) which creates a video file. I noticed it is      mpeg-4 format, and I do not see anywhere to change this format.
    - Back in iMovie, I imported the new video into the project either by Import Media or dragging it in, I guess either      way works.
This seems to work for me so far, even though I'm still experimenting. But I am still disappointed in this, since it only happened since the upgrade to Mavericks and iMovie 10.

How can i get a still photo off an iMovie?

You do not need the QuickTime MPEG2 disk image unless you want to convert some MPEG2 clips. For photos, you don't need it.
You can buy it from Apple at this link, but like I said, you should not need it.

  • I need to add text over a still photo in iMovie.  Following directions that always worked before but not this time.

I am running OS 10.6.8, an upgrade that I did after Christmas.  A couple of times a year, I need to make a video of my students' performances, and have always been able to add text over the still photos before, using the directions in iMovie "help."  However, this time, I am not able to choose a title style; no amount of clicking makes anything show up on the selected still photo.  And no amount of trying to choose the font style makes anything show up either.
This is iMovie 09; is it possible that it is not compatible with my OS upgrade?
I've been able to insert still photos into the video footage, but can't add any titles or acknowledgements.  Thank you so much for your help!  Since I only do this a couple of times a year, it always takes me forever to accomplish, which is why I printed off the Help directions to follow.

  • How can I make a still photo from imovie

How can I make a still photo from imovie?

Let's assume you have iMovie 11 (Version 9). (If you have a different version, let me know. The instructions will be different.)
First, get an app called MPEG Streamclip, which is free. (google MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5)
    Open MPEG Streamclip.
In iMovie, select the clip you need. Then, right-click/Reveal in Finder.
Drag this clip into MPEG Streamclip
In MPEG Streamclip, move the playhead to the frame you want.
In MPEG Streamclip, click FILE/EXPORT FRAME.
Choose JPEG, TIFF, or PNG and give it a name.
You can then drag this photo into iPhoto.
I have created a short video Tutorial on how to do this. There is one error in the Tutorial, where it says that Command-click is the same as right-click. I should have said Control-click instead.

  • Poor still photo quality in iMovie 10

Does anyone know how to improve the quality of still photos imported from iphoto to imovie 10.  They are fine in iphoto but
    become blurry in imovie 10

There is a > Discussion > iMovie > iMovie HD6 going on into which I entered. I posted the following earlier today. I am the entrant with trhe Japanese doll in red, can't miss it.
Have you a set prescription that you use when beginning the Burn to Disc from iDVD. That's where my problem is.
Please read the following and send help soon . . . potis
"My rendering is from iPhoto to FotoMagico. There the album is assembled with all of FoMo's attributes. I find it very user friendly. The blurring of a photo in iPhoto with the Blur adjustment does blur alright and it my instances I get a perceptible lightening of the image. Useable, but not the original. —Cut to the finish. Beautiful rendering in FoMo, so sent to iDVD the 130 photos and music. Beautiful in iMac playback in iDVD. Cannot complain a wink. Burn disc. Play disc, and there are the jaggies on the two buildings, one a church with lots of green and white marble on the facade, the other the Ponte Vechicco shimmering as in a desert as the zoom moves out. The jaggies appear on any horizontal or vertical shape, especially buildings (as noted elsewhere in this forum).
My logic says that if the project plays very well in iDVD and wavers in a DVD burnt from iDVD, that the wavies are introduced in the burn process. I tried recording at Slideshow settings of HD 720p as suggested. No help there.
Another suggestion has been that the digital cameras are ahead of the iMac Dual Core capabilities. I don't know about that. My Pentax SLR does load them in.
For the moment I am eliminating the two dramatic zooms because they are distracting and waiting for a solution which will have to take form outside of my meager experience.
    Thanks muchas for your reply.

How do I creat a still photo from a video in the new iMovie?

I'll assume you want to create a still to use outside FCPX, not a still frame within FCPX.  It's kinda hidden in the "share."  Go File/Share/Add Destination.  You want "Save Current Frame."  After you've created that destination, it'll be there for you in the future under Share.

  • Can't adjust clip duration of still photos in iMovie '11

Anyone having the same problem? I inserted a still photo in one of my projects in iMovie which has a a clip duration of 5s when added. I clicked the cogwheel icon then chose the inspector to adjust the duration. I've managed to changed it to 3s but after I clicked "Done", the clip duration is still under 5s.
I didn't encountered this problem before in iMovie '10 and I've searched over at Google and found out that many iMovie '11 users have the same dilemma.
Any workaround you can suggest? Thanks!

"problems setting duration for still photos and transitions in iMovie '11"
A number of people have experienced the same problem and written about it on discussions. Lots of difference solutions as well. If you search using the title quoted above, you can read the solution I found. It's more complicated than it should be. I've never had to fiddle as much with duration times for transitions and still photos. Nevertheless, the steps I have described work for me. You will also find the steps another reader offered that may work for you if all of your transitions are set for the same durations and all of the still photos are as well.

  • Problems setting duration for still photos and transitions in iMovie '11

I downloaded iMovie 11 from the Apps Store last night and am trying to make my first movie with it today. I use still photos exclusively.
For most - but not all - I like 5 seconds for photos and for transitions 2 seconds. I do vary this on occasion and so do not check "for all photos' or "for all transitions".
I can't get these settings to work with this version of iMovie. For example, I added a photo (5 sec) then a transition (2 sec) which changed the duration time of the photo - as it should. But when I double clicked the photo, to bring up the inspector window to change the duration of the photo, nothing happened. Then I added another photo. The duration of the first photo increased to 7 seconds and nothing I do seemed to change that.
The time increases seem random: for example, sometimes the time on the still photo increases to 6:29 sec, sometimes to 7 sec.
The duration for the transitions always remains the same - 2 sec; it's the time for the photos that jumps around. And I haven't been able to find a way to get back to 5 sec.
Before posting this, I researched and found an number of earlier posts detailing the same issues.
However, none of these posts had stars to indicate the problem was solved.
Has anyone found a solution or is this a bug that should be reported to Apple?

    Interesting!!
I've spent a lot of hours on this too, but I have come up with a different solution perhaps because I like to vary both the image duration and the transition duration in my movies.
    Here's my process:
-> Knowing that (a) I want most of the photos to be visible for 5 seconds and most transitions for 2 seconds and (b) that a transition takes half from the photo before and half from the photo after, under File>Project Properties>Photo Duration I chose 7 seconds - each photo will 'lose' a total of 2 seconds from the transitions in front and behind. I did not check either "Applies to all transitions." or "Applies to all photos." - See below for why.
-> I discovered, as you have, that all the photos have to go in before I add any transitions. This was new to me. With all previous versions of iMovie I simply added a photo then a transition then another photo one at a time. I had to fiddle with the timing adjustments, but at least I could fiddle. With this new version of iMovie I can't. Once the transition is in place, I cannot change the duration of the photo.
-> Sometimes, I want a longer or shorter duration for a photo. For example, on photos to which I apply the Ken Burns effect, I often want the image on the screen for a slightly longer time. In this case, I have to use the inspector to change the duration before I add the transitions. So I might set the time for 8 seconds; when both transitions are added, the time for this photo becomes 6 seconds, which is what I want.
-> The same applies if I want a transition to be shorter or longer than 2 seconds. If, for example, I want the duration for a transition to be 1 second, then I have to change the duration on the two linked photos to 5 1/2 seconds.
All of this requires much more prior planning than I am used to with iMovie. Right now, I working with batches of 5 or 6 photos at a time. I don't put a transition on the last photo in the batch until I have added the next group of photos. And things get really tricky if I don't like my original design. If I want to change anything, I have to take out all of the transitions linking the photos I want to work on, do the math, make the changes in the photo durations, then put the transitions back.
Perhaps I am trying to make iMovie do more than it was intended to do, I don't know. Perhaps this problem stems from the fact that I bought just iMovie 11 from the Mac Apps Store and not the entire iLife 11. Don't know that either. But at least I have found a way to make the movie look the way I want it to look.
Thanks for sharing your process. I will use it when the circumstances are right.

  • Preset or change duration of still photos in iMovie project

    Hi,
I work with iMovie 11 and never had any problem with previous versions.
Now I'm doing my first project in iM 11 and it just ignores my requests
When I set the duration in 'Project Properties' 'Apply to all photos' to e.g. 4 sec it will set the duration anything from 5 to 7 sec and no matter how often I change it will not react. If I set it to 3 sec (as an example) it will allow 5 sec. but never what I would like the duration to be.
This is a really annoying issue, more so when there a lot of still photos in the project.
Is there any way to rectify this or what else can I do???
