Converting iTunes (m4a) to mp3 or wav

I have a fairly extensive iTunes library which I sync with my iPod Nano 2. My daughter has just been given an mp3 player for her birthday and I'm trying to find a simple way of exporting & converting tracks for her to either mp3 or WAV format without losing my m4a. Any ideas short of burning original to CD then re-importing under her account (where import of CD's is set to mp3)?
I have managed to open an iTunes track as m4a within Quicktime and save as a wav file, but the file size went from 2.6 MB to 11.7 MB - not very practical.
Cheers, Andy

If the file is an .m4p then it is DRM protected and you can only burn is as an audio CD - you can figure out the rest.
If the file is a .m4a - no DRM - then you should be able to convert it to an mp3 within iTunes. Change your iTunes import options prefs.

  • Files converted from m4a to mp3 are not displaying correctly in feed

hi; i recently produced my first show in garageband (after using a bunch of other audio apps in the past), exported to an m4a file, and converted to mp3 in itunes, but it is not showing up as an audio file in my feed.
the feed is http://feeds.feedburner.com/wellroundedradio and my blog posting on it is http://wellroundedmedia.blogspot.com
is there something you need to do when converting from m4a to mp3 in itunes to make sure the settings are all correct so it will be enclosed as an audio file? i have tested other mp3 files in the feed and they are working fine.
    thx, charlie

thanks. yes, i think that's what has been so tricky about this. i add a link to an mp3 in blogger, but feedburner doesn't add this particular show as an enclosure, so it's not updating in the feed. can't seem to find where the origin of the problem, though...is it blogger, feedburner, or the mp3 file or...?

  • Converting to m4a from mp3 song length error

Converting to m4a from mp3 song length error. Smaller & cuts off end of song

"If it's not too late delete itunes off your c
    drive and reinstallit on d"
No need to uninstall iTunes from the
main C: drive and install it to another drive. In
fact, it is a bit safer to keep the iTunes
Program installed on the same drive with the
    other programs.
iTunes operates as a database of information for your
music files. The actual music files are stored on
your PC, not within iTunes. iTunes keeps absolute
references of the music file location and other
information in its database file. This allows iTunes
to use music files from any location on the PC:
different directories/folders on the main HD, another
internal drive, and external drive or a network drive
(or any combination of the above). Each song
reference has a specific and hardcoded path so iTunes
can find and play (or sync) it.
Make sure you only change the location of the iTunes
Music Folder, rather than the iTunes
program. Move all the music files to the D: drive.
I respectfully disagree with your claim. I've been running itunes on a dedicated music drive for over a year and had not one issue. iTunes can still allocate a file from any one of my computer's 5 hard drives. Keeping it where other programs or OS are installed makes no difference at all. By installing iTunes on the music drive, the iTunes music folder is automatically where she would want it.

  • Why can't i convert itunes into an mp3 format?

I looked on Apple's website for information on how to convert itunes into a mp3 format on your windows pc. I followed each step. I clicked on Edit and Preferences and set it to Mp3 converter. I then selected the songs I wanted to convert into. Then I clicked Advanced. When I clicked Advanced, it showed "Create Mp3 Version" but it was grayed out. And i was unable to click it. I do not know if I did something wrong or..? Please help me out with this situation because I really want to convert it to an Mp3 format to post it on a website. Thanks.

It doesn't work if you simply open it in a browser tab. When you download it and open in an Adobe window you will be able to click on it and type your information in the spaces provided.

  • Convert itunes files to mp3

Help please, how do i convert itunes files to mp3 format. i purchased a hp notebook and it has itunes and windows xp home. i have always used windows media player and am new to itunes. do i have to go back to media player or can itunes do the conversion?

The only conversion I've done is wma to mp3. To do this just simply import them they way you would any other song file. It will tell you that there are song files your trying to import that iTunes isn't compatable with and ask if you want to convert them to mp3 format. Just click yes and iTunes will make an mp3 of the respective songs. The wma's will still be there so if you want to get rid of them you'll have to delete them manually. The only downside is the conversion makes the file larger so it'll take up more space on your hard drive, but you'll be able to listen to it on your iPod.
As for iTunes purchased music StarDeb is right. Go out and buy the album then rip it onto your hard drive. At least then if your drive crashes you'll always have a backup.

  • HELPPPP!! need converter from  mp4 to mp3 or wave

You should be able to use iTunes to convert your music to a different file format.
*To convert a song's file format:
Choose iTunes > Preferences, then click the Advanced button at the top of the window and click Importing.
From the Import Using pop-up menu, choose the encoding format that you want to convert the song to, then click OK to save the settings.
Select one or more songs in your library, then choose Advanced > Convert Selection to MP3, Convert Selection to AAC, Convert Selection to Apple Lossless, Convert Selection to AIFF, or Convert Selection to WAV. (The menu item changes to show what's selected in your Importing preferences.)
To convert all the songs in a folder or on a disk, hold down the Option key and choose Advanced > "Convert Selection to," then choose the folder or disk containing the songs you want to convert. All the songs in the folder or on the disk will be converted except songs you purchased from the iTunes Store. (Purchased songs are encoded using a protected AAC format that prevents them from being converted.)

    Hope this helps.

  • Converting iTunes M4A to MP3or AAC

HELP Why can't iTunes m4a be converted to mp3???
I have download many, many songs from iTunes. However, my cell phone will not accept m4a.
It's weird that some of the songs I was able to transfer, but others I cannot. What the **** is M4A??
    Please Advise!!
    Thanks!

.m4a is the file extension for AAC files.
Go to iTunes prefs General and click the *Import settings* button.
    Set it it to MP3.
Select a file (or multiple) then right click > *Create MP3 version*.
This will create a new MP3 file with same info as the original. The original AAC/M4A will still be in iTunes.

  • How to convert itunes mp4 to mp3

how to convert itunes mp4 to mp3

So I'm being exact. You cannot "convert" a video file (with audio), to audio only.
You can extract the audio, or record the audio into an audio programme etc. as a way of obtaining the audio only. But convert... no.
I answered the question. I also asked the OP to give further information, so that we could possibly provide a suitable solution. After all, as lllaass has suggested, perhaps the OP wants to make a ringtone.

  • How to convert from m4a to mp3?

I have recently set up an iTune account and bought some tunes but unable to transfer to my mp3 player as it does not support m4a format. How do I go about changing my bought tunes to mp3 format.

There are some instructions on this page which should let you change them : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1550
You basically need to go into iTunes > Preferences and on the General tab use the 'import settings' button to change the target 'type' to MP3. Then close the Preferences popup, select/highlight the songs in your library that you want to convert, and then either use the File > Create New Version > Create MP3 menu option to convert them, or right-click and select 'Create MP3 version' on the popup (the 'MP3' will show if you select MP3 as the type in preferences, if you select a different format then that text will change accordingly).

  • Create M4A to MP3 or WAV

I'm new to iTunes and need some assistance. I just purchased an album and it was downloaded to my computer in M4A format. I can not burn this to a disc as a MP3. How can I convert these files so I can burn to a disc?

If the album was iTunes Plus standard you can convert the songs in iTunes. When you convert a song in iTunes it will be converted to the format that you have set to import your CDs in. Converting creates a second copy of the song in the format you have chosen which gives you the opportunity to either keep or delete the original. If you are using iTunes 8 go to Edit>Preferences>General and click on Import Settings, change your option to MP3 for example. Go back to your library and highlight the songs you want to convert and go to the Advanced menu at the top of your iTunes window and choose "Create MP3 version": iTunes: How to convert a song to a different file format
One exception to this are standard copy protected songs purchased from the iTunes Music Store which can't be directly converted due to the DRM (Digital Rights Management) copy protection. However you can burn these to an Audio CD which will work like any regular CD.

  • Can't we convert itunes downloads to MP3 format anymore?

If so how do I do it it doesn't come down in the drop down menu anymore!!

Yes, you can. Although be aware that cross converting one lossy format to another lossy format may result in a loss of audio quality.
In iTunes open the Prefs > General and click "import settings." Change the options to your desire MP3 settings and click the OK buttons. In the iTunes browser highlight the track or tracks right-click (or control-+click) and choose "create XXX version."
Also be aware this will create a new track in the iTunes library.

  • Converting Itune files to mp3

    Hello.
I need a program that can convert my files in iTunes to plain old MP3. My wife occupies the iPod so im left her with an old mp3 player an it doesent understand the fileformat in iTunes.
    Thanx

It is actually a little more complicated than that.
The command available in the Advanced menu is determined by what you have configured in the iTunes Preferences as your file type of choice for importing. For Convert to MP3 to be available you must first go to Preferences/Advanced/Importing and in Import using: select MP3 encoder from the dropdown menu.
REMEMBER: iTunes cannot convert Protected ACC files, such as those sold by the iTunes Store, to another file format.

  • Converting iTunes music to MP3 format

I am attempting to add music to a video I have created using Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0. Unfortunately, most of the music in iTunes is not of the correct format (MP3) and I don't know how to convert it if it is even possible.

I think i understand what you are saying. Burn the song(s) into an empty disk. Then either import that cd to another music player(such as windows media player) and use it fromt here, or put the songs directly from your new cd to your video. When you import a song into itunes, itunes automatically converts the file into ipod compatible. This is why it is in thw wrong format. Hope that wasnt too confusing.

  • Converting iTunes music to MP3 and/or WMA format

Have a bunch of music (99% of which was originally loaded from my CD library) in iTunes on my Laptop.  I periodically sync that with my iPod Touch 3rd Gen.  Question:  Can a portion of this music be converted from iTunes to MP3 or WMA format?  My car can play music from an SDHC Card but the format has to be one or the other only.  How do I achieve this?  Your time and specific suggestions/solutions are very much appreciated.

    Hey Ed2345;
Followed the instructions to convert songs to MP3.  Quite cumbersome.  You would think Apple would have detailed instructions on how to keep the different formated songs separated, filed or whatever would be best to manage them.  Not sure if I need to create a separate playlist for them or library and how?  I tried to export a playlist of 16 converted songs to an SDHC card.  Thought I did but when I put it into the car stereo, nothing happens!  Wow, I may as well give up.  Would you be so kind as to possibly help?  Your time and efforts appreciated.  Joe
    Gruntvet,
After the conversions have completed, put your Music library in Songs view, and sort by "Date Added."  All of your newly created MP3s will be together at the top.
From there, you can just drag them to the SD card.
