Converting lines to fills

A client of mine has all these product logos that have a
thick 10-point outline around the text.
When I import these logos into Flash I always want to convert
the outline to a fill, because otherwise when I use alpha to fade
the logo in and out during transitions, half of the outline
(typically black) will be visible through the text (typically
white) which looks really nasty. Ideally I would just move the text
away from the outline, convert the outline to a fill, then move the
text back onto the outline, and use "break apart" on the text twice
until the text is a fill as well. This 'punches a hole' in the
outline that fits the text perfectly, so there's no overlapping,
which means the logo will look fine when the alpha is less than
100%.
The problem with converting the outline to a fill is that
Flash is a complete idiot. Whenever the lines intersect or overlap,
Flash will convert the lines to a bizarre set of angular shapes
that look nothing like the original outline. Some parts will even
disappear.
Sometimes I've been able to solve this very painstakingly by
selecting a few lines that are separate from eachother, moving them
offside, converting to fills, and repeating this process as many
times as it takes. But sometimes, lines are 'untouchable', that is
if you click to select them, they change shape, and if you deselect
or undo they return to the original shape.
I've given up hope on Adobe making Flash convert lines to
fills properly, since this weirdness has been around for like 10
years now, so my question is how can I get around this problem? Is
there a 'convert lines to fills' command in Illustrator (never
worked with it) that works better?

If you have Illustrator, I would recommend prepping your
vector logos in there first. Object->Path->OutlineStroke and
the Pathfinder palette will be your best friends. You may want to
create an action, as there are going to be a lot of repetitive
tasks involved in this.
This assumes you need to keep these graphics as vector
images. If that isn’t important, you could simply render an
image sequence from Flash, import the raster images, and use those
instead.

  • Convert Lines to Fills

When I convert lines to fills some times my lines disappear, I thought at first this only effected hairlines and any strokes 1 pt and under, but later I found out that it also can effects lines that are 2pt and even 4pt lines. Does anyone know why this happens or know some sort of work around or way to fix it?
Your help is appreciated and thank you very much.

  • Converting Line item dimension to non line item dimension

I have some BI 7.0 issues.
For some of the existing cubes I had certain dimension as line item dimension  - I wanted to add some characteristic to these dimensions. I am able to do this change and activate the cube.
But we noticed that the data which is a part of the line item dimension is lost. If the data set is small then we could have done a reload but in my case the volumes are huge, so reloading data is not a possible solution. We actually did the same exercise in BW 3.5 and noticed that the data is intact. We have looked into OSS notes and not found anything so far.
Kindly help me to find a way to convert Line item dimension to non line item dimension in BI 7.0 without loosing Data.

    Hi,
the only way to do is to generate a new cube and transfer the data from the first cube via transformation rule. A conversion within the existing cube is not possible.

  • I can't draw straight lines for fill-in-the-blank on my tests and worksheets. The "draw it yourself choice makes big fat lines and takes a lot of manipulation. Do I have to draw them myself with a pen and a ruler?

I can't draw straight lines for fill-in-the-blank on tests and worksheets. The draw-it-yourself ooption gives me thick lines and is time-consuming. So, after all these years, do I have to go back to using a ruler and a pen?

In Pages v5.0.1, the straight lines are already drawn for you in the Shape Tool. Before we go there, select Menu > View > Show Ruler.
When you click on Shape in the Pages toolbar, the top left line is straight. Click it. It will drop into your document in a 45 degree angle. Grab the lower left selection grip and drag it up and to the right to position the horizontal line in the length of your choice. Use the Format: Style tab to manage the stroke weight. You can also choose Menu > Edit > Duplicate Selection (command+D) as a productivity tool.
If you move from the Format: Style tab to the Arrange tab, you can compare the start and end points with where you want the line positioned on the ruler. Once you have it positioned, notice the Lock button, also on the Format: Arrange tab.

  • Is Illustrator converting lines to a fill?

I think this is a Illustrator issue. This problem is sporadic too! I create labels using Illustrator CS4 which i then turn to a pdf through Distiller 9. The pdf is then sent to the printer who re opens the file in Illustrator to create the plate separations, etc... .
The printers are finding some of the pdf files, when re opened in Illustrator are showing the outline of the label as a fill rather than a line. This can cause issues for the printer.
I can't work out where the problem is stemming from. I have created pdfs from CS2 Illustrator files created in  2008 and the outline stays as a line. I have created pdfs from CS4 Illustrator files created in 2010 and the outlines turn to a fill. I have also opened CS4 Illustrator files and copied and pasted certain elements of the artwork onto a new document page to create a pdf and the outline stays as a line!
Whilst File Save As PDF solves the problem it doesn't compress the file as Distiller does.
Would anyone have a solution as to why this is happening?
I look forward to your responses!

A better work flow might be to save as PDF, then use Acrobat's optimizer to reduce the file size.
And be sure to check on- Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities.

  • Is it possible to convert strokes to fills?

I feel like I have done this before but cant figure out where, is this possible?  Using CS4...

@kellyjaye1 – it can be done, but it's more a workaround. The conversion takes place when you:
    1. export to EPS
    2. print to PostScript and use Distiller to generate a PDF
You then could open the EPS or the PDF in Acrobat Pro and/or in Illustrator and copy/paste the path to InDesign.
The InDesign file is left unchanged.
    Involved are two things:
    1. Transparency on the page
    2. A special Transparency Flattener Preset
To get #1 create an extra layer on top of every other layer and a rectangle the size of your page with a fill of "Paper" and an effect. Choose 0 transparency for the rectangle.
Now for #2: create a new Transparency Flattener Preset:
    Raster/Vector Balance: 100
[x] Convert All Strokes To Outlines
Now export the page where your graphic line or your graphic frame with strokes lie to EPS.
And in the second tab "Advanced" of the EPS export dialog choose your Transparency Flattener Preset and check "Ignore Spread Overrides".
Here an example with two screen grabs:
    1. Graphic Line on an InDesign page:
    2. Former Graphic Line out of a PDF in Acrobat Pro opened in Illustrator:

  • How to make lines for "fill in the blanks?" (iWork Pages 09)

This should be easy since it's something many people do: design a form for others to fill out with a pen or pencil.  However, I can't find any information regarding how to make a line after text, like this:
    Name _________________ Address _________________________________ Phone __________
    ...without using the underline character.
Back on the Clarisworks days there was some way to make nice neat lines after text using tabs.  However, It's been so long that I can't recall how it worked.  I've Googled this issue using every logical term I can think of but found nothing useful.  The Pages 09 help file and the user guide  seem to be mute on this subject. The Word 2008 help file is similarly silent.  However, I'm sure that the greater Pages community knows the answer to this one.
    Thanks,
    Bill

What you want is called a tab leader. In Pages, to create the underline:
To create a new tab stop using the Text inspector, click in the document where you want to create a new tab stop, click Inspector in the toolbar, and then click Tabs. Click the Add button in the bottom-left corner of the Tabs pane. The new tab stop appears in the Tab Stops column.
Then  use the Leader drop down menu to choose a solid line:

  • Converting LIN Data collected w/ NI-USB 8476s

    Hello All,
I am currently in the process of attempting to take in specific hex bytes via a NI-USB 8476s LIN interfacing piece of hardware (communicating with a sensor that uses LIN as well) and translate these specific bytes to decimal format.  I know the exact channel and position of these bytes that I need converted to decimal (Channel 35 and the 1st 8 BITS on the channel.. so the first BYTE), however I am having trouble approaching the problem as I'm not very familiar with LIN.
The motivation for doing this is to be able to output an analog signal in real-time (through other means) which is proportional to the decimal values (converted from hex LIN), and feed this analog signal to an embedded microcontroller.
I have attached a copy of the VI that I have successfully used to read the hex LIN signals in real-time in the Labview Workspace.
    Thank you!

    Hi ColWal,
It sounds like you are getting the data but having trouble accessing the raw decimal value of the first element in your LIN frame. The raw data comes in as an Array of Clusters.
    As you can see here,
To access the data, we can index the array to get a single LIN Frame, and then use unbundle by name to get just the U8 Array of data, after which we can index array to get the single first element from the frame. You can then use that data in LabVIEW however you need it.

  • 3D effect with overlapping line with fill and stroke?

How can I draw a continuous stroked line with a fill, so that it overlaps and covers the previously drawn part of the line? I'm trying to draw some text so that it has an effect like in fig. 2 of the attached picture, not fig. 1. Is it possible to make somehow? For a simple image like this I could of course manually remove the few lines, but for a more complex text it's not possible, and I can't seem to find a solution myself. Anyone?

    You're welcome.
You could do it with basic shapes as another alternative:
Maybe that will help your efforts as well.

  • Faint line on fill, cannot get rid of it.

There`s a faint line on the edge of my gradient fill, I selected it and made sure there was no stroke, or stroke size, zero,
its supposed to blend in with the curve below it because they are the same fill colour.

Certain Pathfinder operations in Illustrator will occasionally result in hairline strokes (strokes with a weight of zero, which prints at the smallest weight possible on the particular imaging device), even though that is not supposed to even be possile in Illustrator. I pointed that bug out years ago.
Illustrator should provide a proper hairline stroke weight, but it doesn't. With its antialiased display, these erroneously created strokes are easily overlooked, especially when they are light colored. They can wreck printing jobs.
If you select a path and its stroke weight displayed in the Stroke palette is zero, you have a problem.

  • Convert lines of itab into csv

    Hi!
I have an itab with many lines and want to save this itab to a file as csv. That means, that the fields of the structure the table consists of should be separated by a comma, not the lines!
I found the solution in this forum, the function 'SAP_CONVERT_TO_CSV_FORMAT' should do this!
But on our system this function is missing!? Is there a class which can do this conversion?
    Thanks
