Converting Lossy to Lossless (you read that right)

This may seem like a strange question, but…
I am converted all of my CD’s to Lossless format. I also havesome AAC files that I purchased online. Lastly, I have some MP3s in which I have no high res format original (Lossless).
I know converting Lossless to Lossy will degrade the soundquality some. However, what if someone were to convert Lossy to Lossless? I know it would be a bigger file and no better sound, but would the conversion make the sound worse WORSE because the file is disorted?

Thank you. I wasn't trying to yield better sound. I just wanted to make sure that the conversion didn''t cause further degradation to the sound. As long as it stays the same, that is what I am looking for. Thanks again.

It will not make the sound worse, but as you yourself say, there will be no benefit to doing such a conversion.

My iPhone's "Other" capacity has suddenly jumped to 56G out of 64G. Yes, you read that right. Every time I try to sync to recalculate, it gets worse! Please help! Can't even restore from backup now, since my backup is all "other"!

I have fully up-to-date everything on my iPhone and computer and iTunes. I have an iPhone5 and MacBook Pro. I synced my iPhone this morning and it has 12 or so gigs of free space (even with my music and some photos on it). Then I deleted some voice memos in iTunes, and wanted to sync again to reclaim the space. When I tried, it said I had 29G of "other" data and that my phone was way over capacity and can't sync. I tried a few online solutions to force it to recalculate, but now it says it is about 90% "other"!! Only 8G of 64G free, and "other" is the ONLY thing in the summary bar.
I un-checked music for syncing, thinking that must be the problem. It did not help. Now there is nothing on my phone except "other", according to iTunes (not even photos).
I cannot restore from backup now, since the backup includes the giant "other". I don't want to delete my info on my phone knowing a corrupted backup is my only alternative.

Thanks so much Meg. Unfortunately, iTunes is the program I use to perform syncing. I don't really have other outside options. It is also the location of the backup I would use to restore my phone, and my only way to reclaim important data. I am concerned that, since the last backup occurred when the "other" bar was only moderately huge (around 29G I think), that a backup would replicate the problem back onto my phone.
My contacts, etc. are all in address book and the calendar app on my Mac. As far as I know, iTunes is the way to get them back, but iTunes is where the problem is.
Any thoughts on this?

"Upgrade" from 10.5.8 to 10.5.6 ... yes you read that correctly

I'm running 10.5.8 ... having updated after starting with testing a copy of Leopard. I've now bought my own new copy of Leopard ... the disc is 10.5.6
Is there anything special I need to do when doing a Clean Install ?
I'm backed up with Time Machine.

Do a search of these forums for 10.5.8 permissions and you'll find that the list you get at the end of the repair process is most likely spurious. It seems to me that something is wrong with either your hardware or with the disk you purchased . . . most likely with the disk. That's why I think you should let Apple know about it. You must have several Apple Stores in the LA area (we have two here) so I think you need to check with one of the Geniuses at the very least.
You mentioned that you wanted to try starting with the 10.4.x disk you have and reinstalling that, then upgrading from there with your new 10.5.6 disk but you weren't sure it would accept it since you are already up to 10.5.8. If that's the one that came with your MPB (the gray Restore disk) I don't know if it would work with an already upgraded system either since if it is a grey one it is not a regular retail upgrade. I've never tried doing that (never had to). But I don't see how you can do any harm by putting it in and seeing if you can restore to the original out-of-the-box configuration. Then you could, as you suggested, upgrade that with the new disk. If the new 10.5.6 disk wouldn't upgrade from that pristine state, then something is definitely wrong with it.

Wireless device disappeared (yes, you read it right)

I recently installed arch on my laptop, and today at some point my wireless network dropped. After failing to bring it back again, I just rebooted the computer. When it came back up, this time there was no wlan0 device, and it also didn't show up in lspci. I booted my Windows partition, and still no wireless, and the device doesn't even appear at the device manager.
After checking error.log , at the first time my wireless was failing I got a lot of errors like this:
Nov 16 17:48:40 localhost kernel: [45471.954015] phy0 -> rt2x00pci_regbusy_read: Error - Indirect register access failed: offset=0x00000500, value=0xffffffff
and after about a 1000 lines like this, finally:
Nov 16 17:50:30 localhost kernel: [45582.550355] phy0 -> rt2800_wait_csr_ready: Error - Unstable hardware.
I don't know if it's enough information to solve it, but someone can maybe at least point to what else should I check? google doesn't show up anything that looks relevant and I really have very little ideas where to go from here.

similiar thing happened to the onboard NIC on my mainboard. After a power outage it simply wasn't recognized anymore while the rest of the system still works fine.
Possibly if the OP reseats the wireless card in the laptop that may resolve it. (If it is a card that is). I seem to recall I've seen the cards accessible through a small removable cover on the underside of the laptop. I recall these cards are inexpensive also. You can always just use a USB wifi adaptor.

OK, dumb P6N question about Windows 98 - yes you heard that right :)

The above is a direct quote from the P6N Platinum's home page. Believe it or not, I would like to have a dual boot operation goin on for my kids box (haven't built it yet), involving 98 & XP. That's the currenbt setup on their ancient and slowly dying Dell. Does the above quote mean that you can't install/properly run 98 on a 650i board, or just that they don't "support" it, ala Microsoft? If its the latter, I'll just buy another MSI P6N SLI-FI for my kids box, and dual boot. If not, I'll be forced to back up a couple generations 'cause I want 2 native IDE ports, and no JMicron garbage (ala P965), probably a 945 chipset.

To allow Win98 to boot up normally I had to boot into Safe Mode and run msconfig. Clicked the Advanced button and checked to box to force compatibility mode for the hard drives. (There is probably a command line option for the setup program that will force this during install --- would make the install a lot smoother...) This allows Win98 to boot normally, but there are a lot of warnings for unsupported hardware in the Device Manager.
I think you could probably get a PCI video card to work, not sure about a PCI-E card. Not to mention the fact that you'd probably have to install a Win98 sound card and network card (if needed). It's running in standard VGA 640x480 16 color mode on my PCI-E NVidia 6800GS card. Trying to get the older hardware to work decently with XP could be problematic too.
For just running general Win98 apps it would probably work. Oh, and it shuts down so fast... I barely lifted my finger from clicking the mouse and the computer was off. If only Vista and XP would shut down that fast.
I have tried DOSBox and it seems to support most DOS games pretty well if you have a fairly fast system (2.0GHz+). If you have older Win98 DirectX games, those may or may not work correctly in XP.
If it were me, I'd try all the Win98 games in XP and see what works and what doesn't; use DOSBox for any DOS games. Another option, (if the new computer is fast enough, has enough memory and the games aren't too DirectX intensive) would be to install Win98 in a Virtual Machine (like Microsoft's free Virtual PC 2007) and trying them that way.

Thanks to Bobthefisherman & Turbostar. Turns out I've got a corrupted disk (which I found out via "verify disk" on Disk Utility First Aid. Previously, I never thought to verify disk -- only to repair permissions -- so I never knew my HD had been corrupted.
Wasn't able to do a clean install of OSX10.6 because my SuperDrive only sporadically will load discs, so I am taking it to the Apple Store to see if they can do a clean install, and depending upon costs, get the Superdrive replaced.
The HD wasn't partioned by the way. And I did have just over 40GB of contiguous space.

you will have the most up to date itunes available for your os 10.6.8. to get a newer version you will have to upgrade to a newer os.

iMovie 9.0.9 is the latest version you can run unless you upgrade to the Mavericks operating system (OS 10.9).
Your profile (at the bottom of your post) mentions OS 10.4.11 (Tiger) which is why I mentioned that.
The list of supported cameras is not comprehensive but articles such as:

do indicate that conversion is needed before import, at least for iMovie 9. Although it's a recent article it doesn't specifically mention iMovie 10.
iMovie 10 has a very much changed interface and a different folder structure so upgrading is not trivial so I would not advise rushing into upgrading.
Maybe someone with knowledge of this camera can help.

Converting to pdf and assigning reader rights

I am using the Assembler Integration Verification tools (LC EC Assembler) to test out assembly steps I need to make.
I have a simple DDX which converts a document from msword to pdf, and then tries to assign reader extension rights to it

if doc1 is mapped to a pdf file (no conversion, just document assembly) then this DDX script executes correctly and I get to see my pdf file as output
if i map doc1 to an MSWord file, thus triggering the pdf generator to convert it to pdf first, the Assembler page displays a popup saying "object Object [null]".
if i remove the <ReaderRights> segment, the pdf generator works ok, delivering my converted document in pdf form.
Does anyone know why the combination of document conversion AND reader rights is not working?

Try breaking the conversion and RE steps into two distinct parts. You can do this with one DDX by using the result of one step as the source for another:

to start the movie, l want to tell a story first ( 2 A4 of tekst) and it must be so that if you read a few line they slowly will go up so that you can read the rest.

The simplest option is to use the Rolling Credits title in iMovie. Rolling Credits has a left and right component (so you can do "Role" and "Played By")
So to tell a story, you would use the left boxes only.
You could also use the Far Far Away title for a Star Wars type effect, but with the Star Wars title it is dificult to read the whole thing as it travels off into space.
