is there a way or a 3rd party plug in that will let me convert the tv shows i've downloaded from itunes into a file that will play on my standard dvd player? i have quick time pro running on a macbook pro if that helps.

I'm know you all can help me with info about converting m4v files to something compatible with PCs. I use a Mac and create our home movies in m4v files to post on mobile me website but most of our family and friends are on PC and cannot view the videos.

Flip4Mac works fine with movies from iMovie 08 and 09. But you have to first create the m4v file as usual. Then you convert it to wmv using QuickTIme Pro or MPEG Streamclip (which is awesome and free).
Flip4mac is a component that must be installed on your system.

Converting .PES files for DVD burn.

I have been extracting .PES files from my personal video recorder.
I want to burn these files to DVD on my Mac (10.4) but I can't figure out how to do this. Quicktime won't let me view these files but I can view them files using VLC player but exporting to a format that my copy of Toast 8 recognizes is proving very tricky. Can anyone suggest a way or any software that will let me convert .pes files to something toast or quicktime will read?

Embroidery no, but I do sometimes think that it may be a more worthwhile skill to learn instead of messing about with my mac. .PES stands for Packetized elementary stream and you can read all about them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PacketizedElementaryStream
I have no idea on how to convert those files, but you could try (depending on the file sizes) dragging the files straight to Toast to see if it will burn it to a DVD.

Can not convert divx files to dvd

Every time I tried to convert a tv show saved as a Divx file, the application just closes after 10 or 15 minutes of converting (it does starts, but it crashesafter a few minutes and closes no mater what app I use, Quicktime, iDVD, iMovie).
I have already updated the OS, quicktime, Divx Universal.

I am sorry, I believe that I did not explained my self clear. Quick Time and the others iApps does starts the convertion, in fact, I just found that it does convert small files (5 or 10 minutes files, but not a 1 hour file), I do have the third party software that is the Divx codec for intel macs. But the system still not capable of converting a 1 hour divx movie. I already used ffmpegX, but it takes too long and the final render is not compatible with quicktime.

How to convert mkv files into dvd reader compatible format

Hi there! that's my first discussion ever in this community. Hope you can help me and I thank you by now for support.
My question is pretty simple.
How can I convert a full HD .mkv file into something compatible with DVD readers for home use ( mpeg, avi etc.. ), keeping full HD quality ?
Assuming that I'm a beginner in codec, video converting operations and all stuff like that....
1) I'm using OSX 10.8.5 Mountain Lion
2) I tried using VLC 2.1 but result was pretty bad ( blurry video quality and no sound at all... starting from a perfect mkv source )
3) I tried with Divx Plus Converter 10 having error 2
As I will be converting videos rarely I'm looking for a free solution... Any idea ??

It could be a 'difficult' form of Matroska file. FYI Matroska is just a container like MOV or AVI, and some mkv have the video encoded with Real Video Codec (RV9 RV10). Perian+QT can't decode this, but VLC will play .mkv files just fine on OS X, as long as they don't use H.264!
It's a bit of a lottery until Matroska decide to support the Apple platform. I have found this:

But there may be another workaround: 1. Get Info the mkv file
2. Change to extension to wmv. Save as wmv and that could work better.

Adobe Media Encoder CS4 freezes when trying to convert .m4v files to .mp4 files

I'm trying to convert some things I got on itunes in order to put them on my android phone. Media encoder freezes before I even start encoding though, any ideas? My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, if you need any more info I'd be happy to provide it.

I meant the File->Save option should not be gray if you "make a change" anywhere in the document. I only have access to an OSX Server remotely to illustrate this point so SimpleText should help you understand what I mean by a grayed out menu item:

You can get to the Save As dialog so clearly grayed out menu items wasn't the issue. Moving on..
Your screenshot buttons may be unresponsive but they also aren't "grayed out". Here's a Save dialog with a truely grayed out button:

Accurately describing your issue here will help quite a bit. The "save crash" issue has been so rampant it's the first suggestion I had so I offered it. Often repairing the FLA fixed the saving mechanism.
In your case I honestly haven't come across your issue so I have no more suggestions outside reinstall Flash completely. Good luck.

Converting M4V format to DVD format

I recently bought an iTunes video and I want to burn it to a DVD compatible format to be able play on a regular DVD player. Does anyone know of any tools to do this? Can this be done? If so, I would appreciate some direction. Thanks in advance.

Convert & burn .avi & .wmv files to DVD?

As a relative Mac newbie, I would like to know how to convert .avi & .wmv files that are on my hard drive to DVD-burnable format. I generally use Toast Titanium 6.0.7 for all disc burning. An acquaintance suggested that I use iMovie for this purpose, but -- excuse my ignorance -- how exactly and in a simple way do I do it (go from having .avi and/or .wmv files on my hard drive to being able to actually and successfully burn them to DVD)?
Trying to add the files to Toast's "DVD Video" pre-DVD-burn setting just brings up black screen stills to represent the file, leading me to believe there is a problem, because other video files I've burned in the past have loaded into Toast with a video still frame grab before burning.
Windows seems to be able to perform this function easily, but could anyone help with simple, direct info on how to do it with Mac Tiger?..
Is this all a codec issue? If so, why should it be (on an otherwise tech-savvy and adaptable Apple OS) and how do I rectify it in a straightforward and simple manner?
I should add that I can view .avi files on my Mac by using VLC Media Player, and the .wmv files by using Windows Media Player for Mac, but I want to be able to convert these files to DVD-burnable format, so I can view them on a television set-top DVD player...

Here's a couple more suggestions that I use .Not so elegent but they work.
1. I use a VGA to TV converter box which plugs in to the VGA connection on the computer & gives S video or composite out & then plugin to the dv in from the camera. Then import to imovie for any editing & then burn away !Quick & dirty & it works eveytime. Of course you must have a vga connection at the back of your computer.
2. On the PC side I use Cyberlink Power Director. This accepts .wmv files & will convert to other formats & also send to mini dv camera tape if I want to burn to standalone DVD burner.

Help with .mkv files to DVD

Can anyone please advise what's the best way to put/convert MKV files onto DVD disk while maintaining the highest playback quality possible?
As an absolute beginner to video recording, here's what I'm doing at the moment:
I'm opening the files with Quicktime Pro and the Perian extension. I then select 'Window>Show Movie Properties' and delete the unwanted Chinese voiceover and subtitle tracks. When I exit Quicktime it saves a copy of the file as a MOV, which at least seems a step in the right direction (and takes under 10 seconds). While it's pretty hard to judge by eye, the picture quality seems about the same to me, so I'm guessing there are no losses at this stage...
I then burn the new MOV files to DVD disk using Toast (which doesn't seem to recognise MKV files, and why I'm converting them to MOV in Quicktime in the first place).
However, the burn process takes an eternity... well... 12 hours for a two hour DVD anyway! Also, the image quality is disappointing to say the least. Kinda like what happens when we start enlarging a low-res JPEG image. I've partly put the image quality issue down to the fact that while it might look acceptable on a standard TV, it was never meant to be viewed on a large-screen TV when it was originally recorded 25 years ago.
So, am I incurring any unnecessary losses in my conversion method? Is there a better way to tackle this, or any special Toast burn settings to watch out for? Is there a faster way (though I'm prepared to wait as long as the burn process takes if I can maintain the best image quality)?

For all I knew, iMovie might have given me the option to say, import the file after having converted it to '.this' format in QT, and been able to re-export it within a few minutes as a '.that' file-type which might have accomplished exactly what I was trying to achieve. As you said yourself, you're the "experts" with iM and that's why I came here asking.
I'd have respected and thanked him for the remainder of his advice... had he simply left off the totally unwarranted first paragraph. A simple: "Sorry, but iMovie can't do what you want. I suggest you look in x for y" would have gone down a lot better.

Converting MTS file to m4v

I am editing a wedding dvd. My camera shoots AVCHD and I am editing it in FCE using eay set up AIC 1440 x 1080i50
I have some files from a friends camera that I need to edit in.. I have them on a USB stick in MTS format only. I have been able to convert them using handbrake to a m4v file. Should I use them as this or convert to .mov file using MPEG streamclip for FCE?
Any advice is much appreciated, I may be going the wrong way about this.

It will help a lot if you tell us the exact make/model camcorder your friend used.
Assuming it was originally AVCHD video, you will need to use ClipWrap to convert the MTS files to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec. As far as I know, MPEG Streamclip will not work with bare MTS files. (Bare = meaning just the MTS files, missing the AVCHD folder structure that needs to be present for most apps to recognize the video.)
Also, Handbrake is totally the wrong app to use in this situation. Ditto for converting the files to M4V or MP4. Ditto for doing multiple conversions. You want to convert directly from the MTS files to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec.

I have the same problem. I recently moved my music from a Vista PC to a new Laptop with an external CD drive. It will copy one song from the CD and it will show in the Music file and then I get the message ' Error importing a CD - Folder not found'. I must unplug the CD drive and plug it back in. I have seen no fix for this problem.

You'll have to rip the iDVD disk that you burned with HandBreak or similar app and then import the resulting movie file into iMovie.
