Converting *.mov and *.mpg formats to import in iMovie 08

I am not able to import .mov files created in iPhoto and *.mpg format. Can someone please tell me how to convert it to an importable format.

If you want to edit these clips, your best bet is to download MPEG Streamclip (free) and the Apple Quicktime MPEG2 Playback Component ($20). Open MPEG Streamclip and drag the .mpg files to the big open pane in MPEG Streamclip. Now you can export the clip into a format that can be edited by iMovie for editing. For example, convert to AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) in the same dimensions as the original.
If you want to go straight to DVD, you need a DVD authoring tool like Toast 10 (iDVD will not accept MPEG as a source). With Toast 10, you can open a DVD project and drag the .mpg file into it directly.
You still might need MPEG Streamclip if the .mpg file is too long to fit on a DVD, in which case you would use MPEG Streamclip to divide the .mpg file into two parts.

  • Using QT Pro convert MOV to MPG (Probably very basic question)

I purchased QT Pro with the hope of being able to convert a MOV to a MPG file. Is this possible?
Can you please explain if so or if some plug-in or something else must be purchased?
    Thank you for your help.

Sorry to keep you in suspense, but can't mention the name of the software except to say that it runs MPEG-2 and needs MPEG-2. Pretty much the main reason I'm trying to run down a software product to convert from WMV, MPEG-4, MOV, and other formats over to MPEG-2.
I appreciate all your help and look forward to any future insights you might be able to provide.
Thanks again for all you smart folks out there who have insight about such things. Going to email Roxio to ge more details about their tools and get their suggestion.

  • Converting .mov to mpg

I was waondering is there a way to convert .mov to .mpg using quicktime pro.

Not at all. Use Toast. If you want MPEG-2 use the DVD setting and rip the vob's after encoding - you can make a disk image to save a DVD blank. If you want MPEG-1 use the VCD setting, same thing, mount the image and what you are after is a file called AVSEQ01.DAT or similar - rename it to a better name and .mpg extension, it is a MPEG-1 file.
Why do you want to make MPEG clips and which MPEG? 1 or 2? If you want to make MPEG-2 you can use iDVD which you should already have, make the DVD as an image, mount it and extract the VOB files. VOB = MPEG-2 regardless how it got there.
Note Toast 8 just got announced and contains bupkus for most users, e.g. Blu-Ray recording and a few other things, so Toast 7 may beocme a bargain soon, try Roxio's site, it might be on sale now.

You can do this using Quicktime Pro 7:
Open MOV file in QT Pro (QT 7.6.6)
    Window -> Show Movie Properties
    select "Video Track"
select "Visual Settings" from lower window
    check "Preserve Aspect Ratio"
Click on appropriate rotation icon (MOV rotates!)
Click back on the open MOV in Player Window
    FILE -> Save
You can also do this using TransformMovie, available here:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/21859
Also, MPEG Streamclip can rotate video while maintaining the aspect ratio as well as the interlacing when converting to DV, which is what iMovie prefers as an input:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
There is also a plug-in for iMovie from GeeThree called rotate/scale that might do the job:

  • Movie files suddenly don't import into iMovie

I have been importing dozens of MVI_   .MOV files shot on a Canon 60D and store on my iMac into iMovie no problem. Now after two months when I choose import movie and select the same  files a box comes up saying the file (approx1 GB files)  is processing and it will take less than a minute but the box disappears after 10 secs or so and no file is imported into iMovie. How can I fix this problem that has developed. I've tried with several different files and restarted iMac.

  • Converting .mov to other formats like .mpeg2 etc.,

    Hi all
Please let me know what is the best way to convert my iMovie files or the resulting file which is .mov to other video formats still retaining best quality. How do I do that?
The next question is after make a iMovie project, without loosing quality how do I make a DVD? Do I export as high quality mov then import into iDVD and do the job as I imported the iMovie project directly into iDVD to produce DVD quality trying to avoid importing the .mov file fearing of any quality drop as it was 2 step process.
As expected there was no compromise in quality but the dvd did not have the audio track which the iMovie project had.
    Help please!

    Hi S
Not my way of doing it.
There is no true - Without theme option when using a movie from iMovie
but one can fake some of it.
First I drop my movie icon into the theme window BUT first I change it to
    a box-diagram (see under the theme window man - triangle - box-diagram)
now drop the icon into the upper left most box.
This will do the DVD movie self starting.
Now it is the finish. I select an as easy theme as possibly eg. bruched metalic.
Then drop a black photo into it. Now it looks like there is nothing there.
    No audio etc.
also note that You can select to let the movie loop - start again after end.
    or
You can Export back Your movie to a miniDV tape. Then use this and "OneStep DVD"
It will also produce a True no theme DVD.

  • Convert .mov and other files into imovie

Does anyone know of converter that I can use to import a .mov file into imovie? Called Apple today and apparently even though it is a .mov file there may be something in it that is not supported by Apple. They were not able to help me (advise me on specific converter programs) and I am not sure which one I need or will work. I hate to download things that I wouldn't use. Any suggestions? Also does quicktime Pro 7 convert files? My computer kept asking me to buy it when I was saving the files anyways, maybe there is something to that.

I am having the same problem with iMovie 08. I am trying to import a .mov file that imported just fine into iPhoto '08.
If you are trying to say that files that imported to iMovie '06 won't import to iMovie '08, then this is normal. iMovie '08 has a lower requirement for importation. Files must only be QT "conversion" compatible to be imported. I.e., iMovie '06 automatically converts incompatible files during import if it can. (Some files, like MPEG-1, will import the video but lose audio.) On the other hand, iMovie '08 does not convert files imported at the Finder level since it edits files in their "native" compression format. If the format you try to import is not "edit" compatible, then the file will be ignored.
Any file conversion application that will handle the format you are trying to convert can be used. For instance, I would use an MPEG-based, thrid-party program like iSquint (free) or MPEG Streamclip (free) to convert "muxed" (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, VOB, Flash, etc.) formats. QT "conversion" compatible can be converted by any application having access to the QT structure and for which you may have the proper components installed. This includes QT Pro, iTunes, GarageBand, previous versions of iMovie, or third-party applications like MPEG Streamclip (free), iSquint (free), FFmpegX (donation-ware), Visual Hub (pay-ware), etc.
All I really want to do is shrink the file down so I can email it without causing problems.
Since you did not specify requirements for your E-mail content... If you have QT Pro, you might try the "Share > EMail" option. If not, You can always open your file in garageBand and use the "Share > Export to Disk > EMail" option. This would still probably limit you to 6-7 minute clips for 10 MB ISPs. If you want to send long files or large formats, then it might be better to send reference or QTL files linked to files stored on a server, post them to a web site, or send them peer-to-peer via iChat.

    Hi There-
Thanks for the info. I am actually using the Squared5 mpeg decoder. I followed the directions for the fix, but it still gives my the mpeg-2 error. I have tried the freeware "Quicktime Alternative 181" from the apple website and with that, eitrher my itunes will work fully and the Squared5 will not, or if I un-install itunes, the Squared5 will work fully. It's like when one will, the other won't. I never had this problem before, did Apple change something that makes Squared-5 not compatible ???
I really do not want to sound cheap, times are tough for me and I am trying to do this fix as inexpensive as possible,
If I buy the 19.99 MPEG-2 playback component, I want to be sure that it is going to work, since you can't get refunds from Apple.
Since I am new to this, could you let me know what steps I need to do to do this in the right order????
Thanks for your time, I really do appriciate the time.
    Sincerely- Doug

  • Separation of RAW and jpeg formats during import?

    Hi everyone,
I'm new to Mac and more specifically iPhoto 11.......having fun though!!
Does anybody know whether iPhoto has the functionality to separate or create sub folders for both RAW and jpeg picture formats during importing?
This would save a fair bit of time manually moving photos between folders!!
I believe Aperture has the ability but I'm not ready to upgrade just yet.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
    Craig

    No it doesn't.
    Some possibilities:
    1. Use Smart Albums to separate them
    2. Remember that when you import a Raw to iPhoto it automatically creates a Jpeg preview. So, now you have two jpegs of the same Raw. Do you need to shoot both Raw and Jpeg?

  • Converting movies and moving to iPhone

    Hello,
I recently downloaded some free travel movies from iTunes. They were HD quality, but only less than 3 minutes long each.
Yesterday I selected 5 of them and, in iTunes, went to the menu > Advanced > Create iPod or iPhone Version. It took a long time, I let them convert overnight.
This morning, after they were finished, I tried dragging them onto my iPhone, but they wouldn't copy over. What am I doing wrong?
(Specifics: The original size of the movies as they appear in my Podcast list on my hard drive are 1280 x 720 and 89 mgs each. The new/converted movies that appear in my Movies list are 640 by 360 and 39.4 mg. I try dragging the new/converted movies onto my iPhone and they will not copy over.)
I am on an iMac with the latest OS, latest version of iTunes and latest software for my iPhone. Thank you.

Hi Ricciolo,  I MAY be able to help out here. I found a program "Any Video Converter" that I have been using since I got iPhone 3G. This link should take you to it http://www.any-video-converter.com/any-video-converter-free.exe
Yes this is a Free Version and works fine for me see no reason to pay for something here. Let me know if this one works for you or you found something better. I like free as I have been paying for decades. Buon Giorno

  • Converting Movie to Ipod format thru Quicktime Pro

I purchase the QuicktimePro Registration key for Windows(XP), to convert movies(mp4) format to Ipod(30gb).
QuicktimePro DOES NOT convert mpeg-4 to Ipod format, m4v or mov? I know Quicktime pro is only a few dollars, but I spent for something that I did not enjoy. A very useless feature.
Please correct me if I'm wrong. thank you.

Hello Sujay, are you a Quicktime Tech support? sorry it was too late when I found out that I posted my issue in the wrong Forum, this is my first time, I apologize.
Sorry too, that I did not explain in full detail. Yes, I followed the xact instruction in the manual, followed one of the QT-Tech Support, he even gave me a supporting/reading materials related to my inquiry, I have 2 co-workers behind my shoulders who tried to help but no luck.
My OS is XP, Quicktime plays all my movies(mp4)format without a problem, but when it comes to exporting, (Movie to iPod 320X240)the exported movie is successful but still in mp4 format, instead of m4v I believe.
Did you have a successful conversion? Can you tell me where my missing piece is, please? Thank you with your full attention.

  • Playing movies and changing format of DVD's with QT Pro

I bought QT Pro and I seem not to understand the instructions on how to open up DVD's and converting them for my iPod.

QuickTime Pro can't even play Hollywood (CSS protected) DVD's.
It also can't extract audio from muxed (MPEG 1 or 2 and Flash) formats.

  • What software do i need to convert AVCHD mts/mts2 files to import to iMovie

What software do i need to convert AVCHD mts/mts2 files to import to iMovie

As Kirk says, if you have your camera, you can attach it directly.
Further, if you preserved the entire file structure of your camera (not just the .mts files, but also the folders on the camera), then you can import from that via FILE/IMPORT FROM CAMERA ARCHIVE.
When you import from a camera, it is recommended that you keep a camera archive so you always have the originals available.
If you have the .mts files out of context, you will need a third party app to convert. Two that I know of are ClipWrap and Voltaic HD. You should convert the files to Apple Intermediate Codec. And then use FILE/IMPORT/MOVIE.
