Converting Movie for use on iPod

I bought a movie on iTunes the other day. The movie plays fine on my computer and on the AppleTV. But it will not sync to my iPod Touch or iPhone.
When I tried to convert the Movie by using File -> Create New Version -> Create iPod or iPhone Version. I only got an error message: Error occured while converting the file "<Movie Name>". an unknown error occurred (-4).
Any suggestion on the meaning of the error and how to correct it?

Try using MPEG Streamclip to convert the videos; more information on this issue is available in this article.

  • Converting movie for use in FCP - Cont.

Hi--Thanks for the answers yesterday, but now I have another, or two.
I used MPEG Streamclip choosing ProRes (LT) to convert an animation file that was 20fps. Opening the ProRes version in QT I see it is still 20fps. Ok, so I guess I should have chosen the frame rate in MPEG. But for reference I made another movie using HDV 720p30, but I see it is still 20fps. Why doesn't it change it to 30fps since it is HDV 720p30? I guess I always need to choose frame rate.
So using the ProRes (LT) I will choose frame rate 30 and assuming all ProRes codecs are progressive I will uncheck 'Interlace Scaling'.
Now, in FCP's sequence I will be using these ProRes files of the animation and some footage from my Canon HV20 which is 1080i60. I want to keep the animation at 100%. So is a sequence setting of DVCPRO HD 720p30 the best choice?
Sorry if this is a bit confusing, but then I am a bit confused.
Thanks, you all have been great!

    Hi again Elmer,
looks like that when I tune in you are around too:-)
yep I am slightly confused, however, try to convert everything into one editing format like ProRes including your HDV material, it appears that you can easily avoid using multiple formats in the timeline. A ProRes timeline should get you sorted.

  • Converting movie for use in FCP

    O Nobleissimos!
I exported some movies from TheMovies animation game and want to optimize their use in FCP. Tho I can open in QT, I can't in FCP. Using MPEG Streamclip I want to export to an appropriate format. What I wind up with from The Movies is:
    Format: H.264. 1280x720, Millions
    AAC, 2 Channels, 44100 kHz
    FPS: 20
I see my best options for exporting as Apple DVCPRO HD 720p60, Apple HDV 720p30 or Apple HDV 720p60; OR match my Canon HV20's HDV 1080i60, some footage of which I'll be using. Or maybe another codec?
By using the 720 format in my sequence the animation will be at 100% and I can actually zoom in a bit with my Canon footage creating some flexibility in editing.
Therefor, for video I think maybe I should use the HDV 720p30.
For 'sound' I would choose either Auto or 48kHz, probably 48kHz since auto might just keep the 44.1kHz.
Since the above is progressive I will uncheck 'Interlaced Scaling'.
If you have any tips, or see a better way, plese post.
    Thanks!

    Ha! That is funny!
MPEG was quick on that batch, too. (my first time.)
And smart move with those little cams, following guys with cams does sound dangerous. Reminds me whenever I see shows of guys struggling and whining as they climb Everest or whatever, I always think, "Yea, and what about the cameraman." Those guys must be supermen!
Top of the mornin' to yuh, bud!

  • Converting Videos for the Video Ipod?

ok i just bought the 60G Video IPOD, i downloaded a video from Itunes just to see if it works, i downloaded a video from Limewire, and when i went to add it to the ipod it says that it could not be added or using with the Ipod why? I need to converte it from the itunes Library? Ok once it gets downloaded into the limewire folder and i add it to itunes, what do i do next before adding it to the ipod, i am not spending 1.99 for each video that will be like 1,000 i spoend on videos..lol
Thank you so much for your help

I just got the Video iPod also. So far not too happy about the file type restrictions...after all I spent a year encoding MY entire DVD collectin and was thrilled not to have to take a laptop with me on travel.
    CONVERTING MOVIES for ViPOD.
You have to have the updated Quicktime 7.0.3.
AND then you have to open the file in QT.
    Go to EXPORT.
Select "Movie to iPod" which will convert the file to an .m4v
The movie will be saved in this mode as 320x240.
However, this process is incredibly slow. It's been trying to convert a movie in .mp4 to .m4v and it's been two hours now and it looks like it's only 15% done.
There has to be a faster conversion tool out there. For viewing a few flicks...I would have to spend days just to get 3 or 4 movies on my Video iPod.
MY SUGGESTION: DONT BUY the ViPod YET!!!! Wait till the holidays are over or give an Apple Gift Card.

  • Converting Movies for iPad2

I have successfully been able to convert movies from DVD to iPod, but when I try to convert for my new iPad, the file is too large to save on my PC. Is the file size really that much bigger or is there some other issue I'm missing?

You've probably got a setting wrong. Your original DVD shouldn't be more than 4-8ish gigs because that's all a disc can hold. Usually when I convert a movie to the mp4 or m4v format they're a few hundred megs to maybe 2 gigs.
You can try tweaking the quality settings on your program to dumb the quality down a bit to save on file size. Also if it's rendering it out full HD size, 1900+ pixels, you don't need it that big to view it on your iPad. Check out the manual for the iPad, see what it lists as an optiomal resolution and aim for that.

How do you mean? I wonder if the XP version is the same as the Mac version. I think as a default Handbrake will respect the aspect ratio. It's only the quality you need to decide on.

  • Can Indesign CS5 convert files for use on Kindle?

    Hello,
Have any of you converted books for use on Kindle, and if so, how did you do it, and did it go smoothly? Please explain in "dummies" terms, as I find this topic to be very confusing.
If I convert files to ePub format in Ind. CS5, is this all I need to do to convert it to a format that can be used on a Kindle reader? Would this work for graphics as well as text?
Internet searches about this gave info for an older version, CS4, and seemed to require using supplemental software to successfully convert to Kindle format.
    Thanks for any advice.
    L

Yes, going to EPUB and then Kindle seems to be the best route.
    A few suggestions.
    1.       Upgrade to CS6. EPUB capabilities have been dramatically improved.
    2.       Buy some good books EPUB. I suggest these two Liz Castro’s books for a start: http://amzn.to/LI9Q5b and  http://amzn.to/LIa38o
    3.       Visit Liz’s blog: http://www.pigsgourdsandwikis.com/
    4.       Check out Ann Marie Concepcion’s excellent Lynda.com titles. This link will get you a one week trial: http://bit.ly/fcGpiI
Finally, you need to get at least a beginner’s grasp of HTML and CSS. Without that, quite frankly, you’re screwed.

  • Will my daughter be charged for using her iPod in turkey?

We are travelling to turkey tomorrow, can my daughter use her iPod touch without being charged?

There is no charge for using an iPod touch anywhere. You may be charged for WiFi connection, though, depending on the WiFi access point you wish to use. That would be completely up to whoever provides that WiFi connection.

    Good evening.
This might not be the right place to post this, but here goes...
I have a 24" iMac and would like to convert videos for use on my Sidekick LX 2009. The info on the Sidekick says it will play 3GP or MP4 (simple profile). I been trying to convert using VisualHub and HandBrake but to no luck. Any suggestions on how I can do a conversion, or what settings I need in these programs, or some other program to use?
    Thanks for the help.

  • Converting Movie for iPod

So, I have an .MPG file that i want to work on an ipod... but when i do the whole Advanced > Convert Selection for iPod thing which turns it in to an .MP4 file... the sound of the movie goes away.
Is there a way to fix it so it doesnt... or is there another MPG > MP4 editor out there?

If you need help first you'll need to explain a few more things. What version of QuickTime do you have installed? QuickTime 7.0.3 (which adds export to iPod feature) or QuickTime 7.0.4?
I've heard some people had problems with upgrading to QuickTime 7.0.4 - namely they lose their Pro functionality. Also what version of Mac OS X are you running is it Panther (10.3.9) or 10.4 Tiger? How old is your Mac? Is it one of the Intel based Macs released at MacWorld '06 or an older PowerPC based one?
Also what version of iTunes are you running? (This is important) iTunes 6 and higher requires QT 7.0.3 for best video playback. Videos I convert to iPod format using QT's export movie to iPod feature end up in .m4v format (the format of videos sold in iTunes) but mine are unencrypted - no FairPlay DRM.
I am converting my own videos to the iPod's format. .mp4 is another format the iPod can use. If you have ffmpegX (Google it) can convert video to iPod video or iPod TV format.
My videos exported to iPod format in QT 7.0.3 were originally in .AVI format.
Export to iPod (320X240) format = .m4v (MPEG 4 Video)
They work just fine and I have a Mac PowerBook G4 from winter 2003 with OS X Panther (10.3.9) + QuickTime 7.0.3 + iTunes 6.0.2

  • Converted movie for ipod but no sound!!!

I’ve finally converted all my music videos to apples “.mov” format since they work great in itunes. However for some reason several videos will not transfer to the ipod as itunes says they will not play. The videos that seem to be working were converted to m4p before converted to .mov. I had no idea an apple file (.mov) wouldn’t work on an apple device (ipod), whatever. So I used the “Convert Selection for iPod” for a movie that wouldn’t work. After a freaking long time, 15-20min for a 4min video, it converted it but of course, there’s NO SOUND. Try and figure that one out. BTW, has anyone ever had their question answered on these forums?

  • How do I convert a production movie for use in iWeb

I had an ad agency create a tv commercial segment for me a few years ago. Now, I'd like to be able to show that ad as a movie in iWeb. Is there a way this can be done?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Chiman....
    here's how you do it.
Load the movie onto your mac. Either by bringing it in on a external hard disk, or a data dvd, or even a video dvd.
If it's the data dvd or the hard disk... open iMovie and drag the movie file into the CLIPS area. It looks like little boxes in the upper right of the iMovie window.
You can then place it on the time line. That's the three lines running horizontally below the big black area in the middle of the window. When you see the arrow turn to a green + sign then drop it there.
You can then export it using the SHARE menu in a ton of different formats. I suggest using the IPOD setting in the SHARE menu, as it's easier for others on the web to download.
If your movie from the add agency is on a VIDEO DVD, ie one that plays in a dvd player, or tries to play when you load it into your computer, you need to "rip" it off of that Video Dvd first, and then go through the process I've outlined above. Load the DVD into your computer, then quit DVD player when it opens. Leave the DVD in the computer.
You rip a file from a DVD by using HANDBRAKE. it's a piece of shareware you can download at this url
    http://handbrake.m0k.org/
once you have it downloaded, double click on the file, then double click on the disk image that is loaded onto your desktop. Inside you'll see a file that looks like a pineapple and a drink with a little umbrella. That's the software.
Double click on this artwork to open handbrake.
A window will open with a "select a DVD" and you can look at a volume or an image. set it to look at your DVD and click OPEN.
Select the file you want to load onto your computer by clicking on it once... then click RIP. The default settings of Handbrake will be fine for what you're doing.
When it's done loading it onto your computer, quit handbrake and open iMovie. Drag this file into the clips area and complete the steps above.
Remember to back up your work.
Good luck, I hope this helps.
    Jim
